Ooo, thanks! On the one hand, that's a really cool AW hack. On the other hand, it's a lot more complicated than what I really want, though the benefits of having such a rigid structure does mean the game's less likely to go off the rails if someone hasn't read Shadowrun before. A lot to weigh there.

You could always hack Dresden Accelerated. =P I made a Blades in the Dark hack a while back for my face-to-face group.

I could, but I already hacked Leverage (by simply renaming Plot Points to Edge and being done). Also I still find Dresden Accelerated difficult to wrap my head around completely. Like I said, I'm not searching for a system, I'm searching for a GM for it.

EDIT: Also, if you need me to roll a thing to get stuff movin', boss, I am down with that. Or if you want to do a Challenge, or just a declare that we accomplish things to be where you need us, just let us know what do. I'm ready for anything. :D

Oh! That's fair.
What are you having trouble with about Fate? I'm a big fan of Fate and a frequent GM so maybe I can help.

Hm. Well, I've read basically everything GMs have written about FATE and Fate over the last ten years or so, so I've got all the theory in my head. DFA in particular just feels like it's missing some things, like how to structure a Dresdenverse story. Although that's in the DFRPG books, which I find incredibly exhausting to read except for the margin notes. And inventing mantles is tougher than I expected, as I found in the GM's other game. Still trying to figure out how much is too much and how little is too little, in terms of relative power of characters. But mainly all the little fiddly bits regarding wizardry that I find equally hard to actually sit and keep my eyes on make understanding what wizards are mechanically capable of very daunting to me. The biggest problem seems to be how hard it is to keep my attention on the book. I've managed it for Mona, for the most part, so that's good.

One thing that took me a long time to get about Fate is the more crunch you try to apply, the less it works. DFA pares Evocation down to its absolute simplest; Approach +1 for scale. Thaumaturgy is...a bit more complicated, but yeah, it's fiddly and weird because it's so different from how Fate is supposed to work. =P But essentially, wizards are capable of anynthing. But there's a cost.

Also I think DFA literally says "f*** balance go with what feels right" somewhere.

And yes, the margin notes are THE BEST THING.

I often find that I pull ideas and approaches from other games, to find that they're already there in a different form, in Fate, Dresden Files, DFA, etc.  Your post in response to my flashback bit showed me just that, again.

A RPOL game carries a whole bunch of medium-specific difficulties.  Because the table doesn't really talk about the meta-game back-story that much.  And when they do, it's two or three weeks out of the in-character game. The trick is to find some way to have the metagame discussion with minimal interruption of the IC flow.   I'm still working on that, obviously.

Ultimately,  the Dresden Files novels works with a first-person narrator.  The books and short-stories are about specific individuals.  But the roleplaying game isn't about one person.  So, somehow, we've got to expand things to be about the group-identity rather than any one individual.  And each of you have your own story within.

Add on top of that the fact that investigation games are insanely easy to derail.  It's a huge balancing act.  The players have to feel like they're uncovering clues without feeling like they're being railroaded.

As a side note... another problem, for me is plausible believability:
Luke & Mona met with Sebastian Strauss, the scholar at University of Washington.   He's got a personal problem and it's spiralling out of control.  But he just met Luke & Mona.   He's not going to ask total strangers to help in his personal or professional life.  Because, howsoever he might seem he's not a crackpot.  So...  I need to find a vector to allow them to offer help or get him to ask for help.   Any suggestions?

Oh, and the create-your-own mantle thing...   Mona's mantle-creation guy was a cluster-fuck from day-one.  He was so intent on a specific theme and power-set that he tried desperately to kludge it into a game that wouldn't really support it.   I think she (or you, me, any one of us) could create a much better-balanced mantle.  That player was a primadonna nightmare, and it nearly soured me on the game right from the get-go.

All I need to kick off the City Sweats thread is the day of the week, time-of day, and how you're getting in.

I'll build off of that.

Someone, please, make a decision!

Oh, the pirate guy who just wanted to... not adventure at all but do some normal job? I totally didn't mean him, that was pretty ridiculous. I just meant that I still don't feel like I got George quite right.

Hm. Well, whatever day of the week it happened to be sounds good, and way after closing but not quite the next morning, so maybe 11 pm? As for point of entry, a back door slings good, long as we can cut power to the building to bypass security cameras. If we can bring a mini generator, we could still boot up computers to get what we need.

Ah crud, I was gonna do a thing but got distracted by the other game. Also was gonna suggest waiting for James to be able to join us, maybe see if he links in with any of us background-wise or such, but probably best to just keep moving and let things fall where they will. Saw what happened in the other game with too much of that.

Yup.  I'm afraid Luke just hasn't been here.   I'd given him lots of space, but he hasn't even logged in since April 1st.  If he wants to come back no problem, I'd gladly take him back.   But I'm not gonna force things.

I may try posting for more folks again.  But I am real tired.  I am only keeping on because of your enthusiasm.  I don't mind a slow pace.  I'm not sure how I feel about dealing with more people who get all excited then disappear.

Hellooooo Nathan! Welcome to Seattle. This is James, he has feels. This is Marcus, he's homeless and super dignified about it. And I'm Mona, I have the magic power to get naked really fast.

Sadly that was my best attempt at describing our characters badly. But welcome anyway!

Fear not for I,Nathan Drake's Player, am here. Feel free to hire my private detective and add him to your bonds map. Because that is just how Fate roles.

Hi! Well my guy is a private eye that can 'ghost' aka walk through walls. His mantle is focused practitioner. I am open to anyone having him as a past contact and they just call him up for this job.

With Nathan and Jennifer coming on-board, I am a lot more... hopeful? for the game's long-term prospects.  Thank-you guys for sticking with it as long as you have.

Nathan has three Aspects defined.  He is also a member of the Paranet.  Jennifer, I'm sure will follow suit shortly.

We'll craft a back-story to bring them into the fold and get them aligned and united with you guys.  Some sort of conflict with the Black Cod Enterprises People, probably.

Taking Zero
Adam:
OOC, Rules Clarification: on non-critical rolls, do you permit 'taking zero'?

Hah.  I hadn't actually heard that term before.  Taking Zero.  Or I've long since forgotten it.   But it sounds like Taking 10 from Mutants and Masterminds, assuming that a a Mediocre(+0) threshold event could be succeeded without rolling.  It wouldn't be a Success with Style, but would still be a success.

If that's how you're envisioning it then, hell yes!
