but, admitted, Marcus and The Marshall haven't logged in since before that.   I'm

That might be RPOL mucking you up because I saw Gordon's first post in that thread so I've definitely logged in after that. Was trying to consider apt intro. As far as presence/absences I tend to dip out over weekends, some weekends more than others.

I keep trying to read the Stories We Share thread, but it's way too meta for me. I can't comprehend it. I've never tried to workshop a story via text before.

Re: Private threads?
Try treating it as a normal IC thread then with comments on what you THINK should happen.

That part was here In reply to Agnes (msg # 31) in that thread.

Everything afterwords is people hammering stuff out game wise....i.e. who is Doug?

Then some adds how they want to enter/respond to the scene and we continue the process.

It's just like sitting at the table and the GM asking the players, "So... how do you all know each other?"

We're just making up the story about how you all came to meet.

Thanks for posting Luke in the Moonrise Cafe.  Does he know anybody there?  Does he interact with anybody?

Finally, I have a move date.   Movers pick up my stuff on Monday.   I clean the rest of the night and start driving for my new home on Tuesday...  I expect to be installed and going by the 3rd or 4th...

Re: Private threads?
Removing a battery does not stop things getting damaged around magic Agnes, you're thinking of Ben Aaronotich's works (another good series). Dresden Files it fries things like credit cards too and it's noted practicioners do not carry mobiles, rather than carry them with the battery out. If you want to shield something from getting magically messed up I believe that Dresden put one inside a ritual circle before doing magic in one of the later books. Cold Days possibly. Either way though advising someone to take the battery out won't make a difference.

Re: Private threads?
Early novels had Murphy turning off her PC when expecting Dresden...  It seemed to be enough.

Interestingly, DFA doesn't mention hexing at all.  There is only one obscure reference that I could find (in an admittedly brief skimming search) that referred to a "murphyonic field".  Otherwise... it seems DFA ignores hexing as an ongoing annoyance.

Being a fate game, unintentional hexing will certainly take place when we decide upon it...  because I don't want to do away with it outright if it can help provide some color and generate the occasional fate point.   But such precautions on the part of PCs & NPCs will definitely provide some safeguards.

I recall an interesting discussion, possibly in the Paranet Papers, about why Dresden has so much trouble with that, while many other senior members of the Council (and thus, presumably, powerful Wizards) didn't have similar problems.  Injun Joe even attends Medical School every decade or so...  presumably without fear of frying machines at the hospitals.

Didn't she shut it off so her work was saved? She specifically referenced losing work as a result of him being there in the past. That said given all tech seems to be less likely to malfunction, as in reality, when it's switched off than on so it helps. The popping the battery though is verbatim from the Ben Aaronovitch stuff, never seen a reference to it in Dresden since if that solved the problem every wizard would do it. Hence why I queried it as a counter measure since it does not do anything more than shutting down the phone might.

The dropping of any specifics about it hexing down equipment as a side effect is good. That should always really be a GM-yay or nay thing, as well as a way to shut down particularly useful tech or give a science subject challenge like Macrone's vault and drop a fate on someone if needed.

Does that mean the deliberate option has gone too?

And yet they seem to have problems because the further up the White Council the more there are those technically out of touch even if some of them study . The medical studies is one of the especially egregiously weird ones. It's possible IJ did his studies in predominately theoretical medical studies, can't recall it ever being mentioned if he has qualifications. Do the book work and drop out before they dump him in anywhere where things can go wrong.

Re: Private threads?
Dresden lacks subtlty...

Elaine had a cell phone and he admits she is as powerful as he is.  There are ways around it.  Distance, insulation (magic or otherwise), self-control, etc.... I think it follows the adage that a wizard can do anything...if he is prepared.  Harry didn't care about that stuff.  Agnes does and Gordon definitely does since he has his own business and works in clinics all the time.  So, we have probably figured out ways to make technical things a little safer around us.

Ack... RPOL is giving me problems.  I post then it says the server has issues.  So, I have to come back.  It works then it doesn't.  So, if I am less timely today that is why.

RPOL has ongoing issues with their server.  Typically it goes down around 20:00 GMT, for about 5-10 minutes.  They apparently share server space or some other resource that is hogging  processing attention and forcing the site to reboot.

Re: Private threads?

Some asshole stole my truck from my work parking-lot last night.  Five minutes after I pulled in, no less. I happened to be in Surveillance when it was taken.  So I watched him driving off (which at least means that I have great footage of the theft).

I'd been trying to sell the truck for the past three weeks.  I don't really need the money;  I just need to not take it with me.  But this really isn't how I wanted to get rid of it.

I'm just so done with this city.

Re: Private threads?
Dawson Creek. British Columbia.  The RCMP found my truck about four hours East of Dawson Creek, in another province.  They say that the ignition is the only thing damaged, but my insurance company will make the call as to whether it's worth it to bring it back or just pay me out.

I've arrived in Victoria, BC.  My stuff hasn't.   I'm sleeping on a camping mattress  :)

I did, however, just set the computer up and it appears to have made it through the trip unscathed.

So... since we didn't actually get very far on the Moonrise cafe scene, perhaps we should use that to jumpstart into the game.  I mean, we've conveniently got all the characters together in one spot...

My access will be a little spotty, but I am around!  And back in civilization!

Re: Private threads?
Agnes:
OOC:  Well, if that's how you want to interpret "confirm or deny", feel free. It's completely wrong--and I have no interest in engaging in your bait club.   But if you want to play with yourself in the corner of it, obviously Agnes is not going to correct or stop you.

I'm pleased that you don't feel it appropriate to have Agnes correct another character's thoughts.  But Bait club??  Please, people.  Play nice together.

Marcus' thought-process might be completely wrong.  Similarly, it is possible that Agnes doesn't know the entire history of White Council dealings with other species.  Other wars have been mentioned; there's the Oblivion war, the Sidhe wars.  We don't know the White Council's involvement in either of those, let alone other possible conflicts over the centuries.

I feel that everyone should feel free to express their character's thoughts. I think it helps to justify character actions down the road, and it allows everyone to see via metagame knowledge, that something might be at play.  That gives us a great pretext to discuss it in the OOC threads to see what kind of drama we can work out Together.

Gordon's character, for instance, has a focus on psychomancy.  Luke's character is a white-court virgin.  The game must, by it's nature, involve some elements that require mental-magics and emotional-manipulations to have some level of dramatic focus.   If we, the players, don't get to see what baseline looks like, we, the players, won't necessarily know that thoughts and/or emotions have changed.

It is definitely frustrating when someone posts thoughts that may be incendiary and you are constrained from addressing them.  But let's keep this constructive.  A character thinking something does not mean that a player is necessarily trying to trigger a reaction.  If you feel this is the case, bring it up in the OOC thread and discuss it.  Or bring it to me and I'll create a private thread for the three of us to discuss.

Re: Private threads?
Yeah apologies about that Agnes. I'd mostly been indulging Marcus' Tilting At Windmills trouble. I also brought up the wars bit IC since I thought that might have been whatever went down with the council and the Black Court that ended in Stokers work.

Re: Private threads?
I get that Agnes is a fun straight person.  She's honorable and mature.  You can poke her with your drama stick and get an awesome reaction.

The problem with Marcus' Tilting at Windmills trouble is it creates messes that I'm not interested in cleaning up (as a player).  If Marcus decides to 'interpret' something that Agnes says and then she has to deal with political ramifications that may be fun for you.

Are they fun for me?  You have no idea because you didn't ask.  Did you suggest how it could lead to playing up one of Agnes' aspects in return?  Not cool to have a one-sided thing.

When you want to bring in vampire war stuff, or Warden stuff without my active collaboration--you're being really rude to me as a player.  I'd love to have more Warden stuff in the game, but I don't want to be stuck as reacting to what other people decide.

I actually appreciate Marcus apologizing and stepping back.   That was cool of him to be okay when I said no.

But clear the Agnes poking with her player first, okay?!

Re: Private threads?
I contend that Marcus didn't poke Agnes.  His player outlined some of Marcus' thoughts. Thoughts that Agnes wasn't aware of.  I am well aware that OOC text, such as character thoughts and outright orange-labeled OOC Text, can be used to push bottons and "bait" others.  I didn't see that happening.

I do not wish us to get to the point where we have to police each others' characters' thoughts.  I do not wish to have to ask permission of The Marshall if it's okay for Willa to think ill of the Wyld Fae.  I'd find that level of policy and control to be stifling.

Sorry if I disrupt the flow of the conversation here....

Fair warning.

My daughter graduates this weekend.  So, I may be a little spotty this week.

Thanks ahead of time for your understanding.
