Re: Book 2: Raiders of the Fever Sea
The concentrated effort of the party finishes off the remnants of the town guard, and all that is left is one remaining dog that runs, whimpering, down the dock towards town, though after a few yards, it accidentally strays of the side of the dock and into the water.

The fisherman repairing their nets and tending to their boats, who barely had time to pack away their gear during the quick melee.

Now, the men stand stunned, and a silence falls over the fishing village as they look towards the pirates that have entered their little hamlet.

Finally, one of the elderly fishermen makes his way to the end of the dock, leaning on a stout wooden staff.  "Well, that's it then, lads.  What do you propose?  The usual plunder?  Pirates have come here in the past, we're no strangers to it.  You've killed enough of us, and we won't resist, unless you're going to strip us of the means to survive.  Then we'll fight to the last man!"

Re: Book 2: Raiders of the Fever Sea
Tiberious flicks his scarf back around his neck, expertly avoiding cutting his own throat from a lifetime of practice.

"We're pirates, not monsters. I wish you had just surrendered quietly but we will make sure to pass along the story of how fearsomly you defended yourself. The usual plunder will suffice."

His voice rose louder so that the villagers hiding in fear could hear him as well.

"And if anyone wishes to live a life of adventure, taking from the weak and sailing the high seas they are welcome to come aboard. Any lad or lass who has seen at least a dozen years can join the Black Death for a life that will quickly amount to more then fishing in the same waters year after year."

OOC: Lol and NOW I get a high roll... 26 on diplomacy to recruit more crew.

20:17, Today: Tiberious Black rolled 26 using 1d20+8.  diplomacy check.

Re: Book 2: Raiders of the Fever Sea
The villagers seem swayed by Tiberious's words.  Enough of them join the crew to fill out the ranks, and the crew is able to loot 2 points of plunder from the village as well.

Once the ship is loaded, Sandara briefly conferences with the Captain and the rest of the leaders.  "So, what's it going to be now.  That was a successful trip!  Should we go after some more fishing villages, or prey on the shipping lanes again?"

Re: Book 2: Raiders of the Fever Sea
Patrolling for heavily laden merchant ships, life is going well aboard The Black Death.  Although not tremendously successful in terms of actual piracy (yet), the ship is well-manned, and the skills of the captain and the officers are resulting in steady work for their crew.

A few hours before sunset on their second day out at sea, the lookout shouts down.  "Smoke, two points off to the east!"

Sure enough, against the darkening horizon, a column of smoke winds its way into the air.  Sandara squints.  "No land out there on our charts, probably a ship, maybe already burned, maybe in distress."

Tiberious grins and points from Dehemma to steer the ship in that direction.

"Ho ho! Adventure and bounty await! Let us sail forth!"

He tried to sound like a pirate of legend even though they were hardly one yet. Even still the thrill of mystery and adventure had him by the hooks and he was hardly going to let his curiosity slide on by.

Re: Book 2: Raiders of the Fever Sea
A few tense minutes of sail later, and two ships are revealed: one is a single-masted ship Chelaxian by design, grappled to a pirate brig that Sandara identifies as the brig Vorsfang, home to a crew of moderate reputation.  You can barely make out Chelaxian marines escorting bound pirates below decks as they set fires around the Vorsfang and prepare to set their own ship free.

Sandara offers her advice again: "Well, we can ignore 'em, leave the men of the Vorsfang to their fate for running afoul of a Chelaxian cutter.  Or we could take advantage of the confusion, come in from the sun, and they won't see us before we're upon them.  Take on both, take whatever's left."

Tiberious gives Sandara a fearsome grin.

"Fortune favors the bold and I'm tired of our name not being passed around. Let's take both ships!"

The crew made ready as they headed straight for the Chelaxian pirate hunter.

OOC: Let me know when the ships are approximately 1 minute apart if we aren't going to have to do ship-to-ship combat. Eveeda and Dehemma will begin spell buffing before Nogos flies his way up to the crow's nest for another aerial assault.

Re: Book 2: Raiders of the Fever Sea
The crew nods, and The Black Death approaches from the west, hidden against the setting sun until it is almost too late for the Chelaxian ship, busy as it is with the Vorsfang to notice.

The last of the pirate crew appear to be heading below decks, kicking and screaming while being forced at sword-point by the Chelaxian boarding party, and the fire on the Vorsfang has spread, lighting up most of the masts.  The crew of the Chelaxian ship (which you can now see is called Famished Mane stands ready to push off and avoid a fiery fate themselves.

You have your one minute of prep and then a surprise round.   There are approximately a dozen sailors and marines on Famished Mane, plus the Captain, who is easily visible in his uniform.  A boarding party aboard the Vorsfang consists of 20 marines plus an officer, and only a half-dozen of Vorsfang's crew are still visible above decks.

The Famished Mane is unable to avoid the attack of the new pirate ship, but the crew spots it coming and tries to prepare.  As The Black Death approaches, the Marines sound the alarm, and two crews run to man the ship's ballista.  The first ballista suffers a catastrophic misfiring, destroying the weapon and stunning the crew, while the second manages to avoid destruction, but unable to hit the ship.  Meanwhile, the rest of the marines pepper the crew of The Black Death with bolts, though the crew escapes mostly unharmed, with the exception of Tiberious, who suffers a grazing hit from one of the bolts.

Okay, now it's time for combat.  Roll Initiative.  If you beat a 14, you can act before the Chelish Marines and crew.
