CHAPTER ONE - THE LAPTOP HEIST
Chapter 1 - The Laptop Heist

Mission Briefing
Your team has been hired through a middleman (Rudek) to recover a laptop in the possession of Brigadier-General Lennart (Canadian) who is stationed for the next week at Camp Butmir, which hosts NATO HQ in Sarajevo. Youíre told that Lennart isnít tech savvy, so likely hasnít transferred any files off his computer, and has been taking his laptop off-base. (He isnít supposed to. But heís high up in the ranks, so no one has noticed/stopped him.)

Your client believes (or knows?) that he has something very important on that laptop and they want it or donít want it to get out. If the laptop disappears, thereís not much Lennart can do as heíll have to explain the security lapse. They donít want Lennart harmed (if itís avoidable), as they donít want attention drawn to why someone would want his laptop so badly.

Lennart drives to and from his town house to work, which is about 4 km away.

Present time...
You and your team are in strategic positions and the laptop heist is underway. Where are you and what are you doing? How are you attempting to get the laptop? This will take some discussion as a group.

Decisions to make:

-Where and when do you hit him?
-Whatís the plan?
-Rudek has given you each a weapon ďon the house.Ē What did he give you?
-What other gear do you want/need (Rudek has arranged for people to get you this)?

What Rudek has given you:
-2 Jeeps
-a weapon each
-Base plans
-Lennartís home address
-Other gear you want/need

Additional info:
One or more of you knows Rudek and trusts him. Heís a well known fixer (he set up jobs).

[[As we have lots of new blood to NBA (which is awesome!), Iím going to give example skills and how they could be used. Once we get in a groove, Iíll do this less often, as youíll know how the skills are used and can begin to improvise.

Also, keep in mind, that you all are bad-ass spies. So you can narrate what youíd like to do and I can give you the skill youíd use and how to resolve the action mechanically. So donít worry about that! Think first: what do I want to know? Or what do I want to do? Remember, these are our two skill groupsó-investigative (know) and general(do).

You can, but donít have to, attempt any of these:
-Steal or switch laptop at night (Surveillance, Infiltration, Filch)
-Steal/switch at office (Infiltration, Filch, Military Science, Disguise or Cover)
-Hitting car (Driving, Hand-to-Hand, Disguise, Shooting, Explosive Devices)]]

In NBA, you also have a preparation skill, which lets you basically create a situation you want by writing it in retroactively. ďI knew that I would need this laser cutteró-thatís why I brought it along with me [1-pt Prep spend].Ē Network works "backwards" like this also. "I need to know a person who..." "OK, how many Network points do you want to spend on them?" "4." "Ok! They exist!" I'll cover more of this in rules and when it comes up.<---- I'm going to double check this tonight; I don't think Preparedness is quite so broad unless at 8 or higher. Will update.]]

So bad-ass spies: WHAT ARE WE DOING? :)

(I'll try to respond to info questions when I can, but will not move things forward greatly until at least this time tomorrow so everyone has 24-hours to respond).

CHAPTER ONE - THE LAPTOP HEIST
Given the non-violent intent of the mission, Erik takes a taser as his weapon of choice. When they've been given the general briefing, he looks to the others.

"I really don't recommend hitting him on base," Erik says. "Easiest way would be to give him a flat on his way home. Then two of us can arrive moments later appearing as NATO personnel and offer to help him.

"With his guard down, we knock him out and take the laptop. Make sure we take his wallet and make it look like a robbery."

CHAPTER ONE - THE LAPTOP HEIST
Hung-He nodded thoughtfully after hearing Erik's suggestion. It made sense, he thought, and the less military personnel they had to deal with to secure the objective, the better.

"Four kilometers isn't a huge distance," He comments, not bothering to look up from the 9mm pistol he was currently disassembling. Lee, as he liked to be called, was the type of man who always wanted to know how things worked. Almost methodically he released the slide, cleared the chamber, and replaced the magazine before returning his attention to the others of the group. His weapon choice was deliberate; he was well known to be the techie of the group, he just wanted to make sure that they all knew he was good for more than just being behind a computer.

"But that leaves plenty of room for something to go wrong during his commute. If we could isolate him it would be best. Might have to play with traffic a bit."

"I'd suggest a day or two surveillance 'fore we lay any definite plan," Oliver drawls with his charming brogue, "I mean, t'start, this's a general officer we're dealing wit' not some chartered accountant. He's hardly likely t'be drivin' his own car, is he? Pro'ly got a so'jer behind his wheel an' maybe a security detail as well.

CHAPTER ONE - THE LAPTOP HEIST
Felix was in the process of intently examining both of his hands before he raised his head and spoke with a noticeably thick french accent. "I think you are onto something Monsieur Quinn. Why is it we cannot simply wait until he is home and asleep, especially if we spend time on surveillance as well as get to know the man's schedule? If we are especially neat and tidy then he will have never known anyone entered the house until he discovers the missing laptop. No faces, no bodies, no identifying marks, and no possible evidence that we will miss. Plus if things go wrong there are plenty of ways a man can die in his home of natural causes." The man finished the sentence seemingly uninterested as he went back to his hands while continuing to listen to the conversation.

CHAPTER ONE - THE LAPTOP HEIST
Gabbie looked over at the others, she knew some of them even worked with them so she was a little more relaxed at present. She felt the weight of the tranq gun she'd asked for non lethal, quiet but effective, sitting comfortably in its shoulder holster.

" i see a few options...the road side is a good one if we can isolate the target ....even better if we could get one of us in as his driver for the day....then there's the house secure and quiet though almost certain to be alarmed and he might even have a panic button to the base...lastly on base in his office...could be done but time is of the essence...." She gave them all a smile

" i would suggest the road but also recmend a house search while it happens...Intel suggests he hasn't downloaded anything but better to be safe than sorry i always say "

CHAPTER ONE - THE LAPTOP HEIST
[[Ok, all, let me know if I missed anything major that you need to know. Otherwise, take this info, make a few rolls, describe what you do, and Iíll describe the results.]]

The Route
Persephone, you pull up the route on your phone. You see that driving from Lennartís house to the base only takes 10 minutes (4 km ~2 miles) on residential-type roads crossing rolling hill-type terrain. The roads are two-laned. The base isnít too far from the Sarajevo airport, so thereís probably regular car traffic.

Surveillance (home, route, schedule, base(?))
Quinn, if you want to surveil Lennart for two days, I can provide more info. (Anyone can roll; Quinn just mentioned it). Also, remember thereís the Surveillance General Ability (to follow and watch without being noticed) and then the Investigative Ability Electronic Surveillance, which Gabriella, Lee, and Persephone have. So you could set something up to watch from afar.

Actually, it might make sense for everyone to do a little research/surveillanceó-divide and conquer. Up to you guys.

To accomplish this, you would decide if you want to spend any points (from Surveillance in this case). Each point you spend adds 1 to your d6 roll. You decide and spend points before you roll. Some general ability points (3 of them, I believe) refresh fully when you have some down time. Donít worry too much about running out of points now. I want you guys to get in the habit of spending, and Iíll post more details about how they refresh.

Let me know if you are looking for particular things. Also let me know if you have any investigative abilities you want to use to flavor how you go about surveilling.

Mechanics-wise, I will set a target number/difficulty for the info you describe wanting. If you hit the target number (TN), you successfully surveilled. The target number for a task of average difficulty for a Jason Bourne is set at 4. So youíd roll d6 aiming to equal or exceed the TN.

Without spending any points you have a 50/50 shot at success. 1-point? 66%. 2-points? 5 out of 6ó-only miss on a 1 (if the TN is 4). 3-points? With a TN 4 youíre guaranteed success.

House Burgle
Quinn mentioned this. Felix expanded. Someone could case the house, see if you can answer some of those questions about alarms and such. Many of you have Infiltration. But MAN does is Gabriella good at it! For casing the place, itíd be an investigative use of Infiltration (unless you actually want to break in and take an early look around). To do this, tell me if you want to spend points to add to your d6 and how many. Roll, then add.

Playing with traffic
Lee, you mentioned playing with traffic. If you all go this route, give me an idea of how youíre planning on doing this.

Plan option: Impersonating Nato officers
Erik, you know that to pull this off youíd need either good cover or good disguises. You and Felix (military science) know enough about Camp Butmir that 10-12 nations have NATO staff there, so Lennart probably doesnít know everyone personally. (Military Science can also help you with presenting yourself and personnel. Iíll have to check, but I donít think it even requires a point spend.)

Plan: Be his driver for a day
This would require different things depending on how you handled it. Let me know how you might go about this (and how you might handle his ACTUAL driver) if youíre interested in pursuing this route.

The Timeline
You all got the job last Saturday from Rudek. Itís Sunday and youíre in your airport hotel room discussing your plans. Lennart is flying home next Sunday. If Quinn/group gathers info for 2-days, youíre looking at a Wednesday op earliest.

Another Nightís Black Agent option: Network
You guys have network points, which lets you create people to help you out. Maybe you want THEM to do some surveillance for you. Maybe you want to know a girl on base who can get you some of the info. Network points donít refresh, though, the way other points do. You can only use XP points to boost them (which we can talk more about later).

Network example: Letís say you wanted a girl on baseó-a civilian contracted office worker. You decide how many points to put in her. Letís say you put 3 from network. Then youíd use HER points for any General Ability rolls. Want her to break into an office for you? How many of her points do you want to spend? Roll your d6 and add those. Be careful though. If a network contact gets down to zero points, they can become vampire chow.

So, master spies, what do you do?

CHAPTER ONE - THE LAPTOP HEIST
Quinn will be waiting down the street from the General's residence early the next morning to tail his vehicle to the base.
Objectives: identify vehicle; determine whether there is a driver, military or civilian; determine whether there is a bodyguard/security; determine route and time.

Quinn will return to surveil the house.
Objectives: determine what he can about the neighbors and the nature of the neighborhood.

Quinn will approach the house to deliver a courier envelope to "Erasmus Zollern, Ph.D."
Objectives: determine whether anyone else is in the house during the day, such as a servant or secretary.
[Note: if anyone is there, Quinn will note that the delivery is wrongly addressed and depart.]

Quinn will wait near the gate (in a different vehicle than in the morning) to tail the General home.
Objectives: determine route and time; determine whether any driver or bodyguard are the same personnel.

How many rolls are needed?

In the first few days leading up to the heist, Hung-He will put his skills to use to do a little surveillance and information digging of his own. Through some cyber investigative work he will try to discover which, if any, personal security company is contracted by Lennart.

If those initial search results prove positive he would likely intrude on the company's servers/databases to mine as much information about the security system in place at the General's residence.

And finally, armed with that knowledge, he would attempt to talk Gabriella into posing as employees of the company with him, to case the house and sabotage the security, under the guise of standard system maintenance or repairs.

CHAPTER ONE - THE LAPTOP HEIST
Gabbie will look at plans of the area around the house looking for the least overlooked and secluded approach to the property.
This will entail finding OS maps of the area and plans of the house he lives in.

Gabbie will prepare for a break in if Hung's plan doesn't work

She will spend 2 points of preparedness to have the appropriate tools to break into a house including security system jammers.
She will also take with her an external network access device so she can set up a back door for Hung to access the targets computer system remotely.
She will also have small cameras and listeners to dot round the house.

Gabbie will break into the house
On the morning of the second day once the target has left and Quinn has provided confirmation that there is only the target living there. and Hung's plan has already been tried

This would be a Disguise roll (if someone is there). But note, Quinn, that you don't have that skill. So, if someone is there and you do this, you're likely to look suspicious with whatever consequence that entails. Having no skill in an area means you're very average at it.

Quinn:
Quinn will wait near the gate (in a different vehicle than in the morning) to tail the General home.

Surveillance Roll.

Quinn:
How many rolls are needed?

4 rolls (surveil AM; surveil house; Disguise; surveil PM). It looks like you only have 2(!) points of Surveillance. So you may decide to only do one of these. You could also create (ďrememberĒ) a network contact to do it for you or ask another member of the team who has more points to take care of a few of them. Also consider if there might be any Investigative skills that might help you gather info for free or color your methods of accomplishing your tasks.

Re: CHAPTER ONE - THE LAPTOP HEIST
Hung He:
In the first few days leading up to the heist, Hung-He will put his skills to use to do a little surveillance and information digging of his own.

The investigative skill "Electronic Surveillance" makes you good at using sound and video equipment to gather intel. Is this what you mean by surveillance? If it's cyber, then we're talking digital intrusion. See below.

Let me know if you want to set up some electronic surveillance, what it might look like, and how you'd go about doing that. I can let you know if/what roll might be involved.

Hung He:
Through some cyber investigative work he will try to discover which, if any, personal security company is contracted by Lennart. If those initial search results prove positive he would likely intrude on the company's servers/databases to mine as much information about the security system in place at the General's residence.

Let's lump these together into one Digital Intrusion roll. So d6 + whatever points you want to spend.

Hung He:
And finally, armed with that knowledge, he would attempt to talk Gabriella into posing as employees of the company with him, to case the house and sabotage the security, under the guise of standard system maintenance or repairs.

To disguise yourselves, you can "piggyback." One of you will spend points and roll, and the other will pay a point to go along with it. This would be like one of you getting uniforms and such and then sharing. This would be a Disguise test. (d6 + points spent)

Gabriella would have to agree.

Sabotage would be a Mechanics roll, probably at a +1 if you get good intel on the nature of the security system from successful hacking. With a really good result on Digital Intrusion, it may even be possible to electronically disability/disconnect any existing security. Who knows? :)

(Mace Hunter)

Any casualties were too many in Maces's mind he had to know if the house was a viable option, the plan was for no one to get hurt but guns were going to be involved and maybe a car wreck or a break in so anything could happen.

Mace will dedicate time to eyeing the house to see whatever he can learn about it.

OOC: as far as the weapon whatever is popular with local criminals. If he has to use the gun or even just from the gun being seen Mace wants it to look like it was locals. my guess is that's some kind of 9mm but I've never been to the area so.

Gabriella:

Gabbie doesn't appear to be the best at research. But let's call this an investigative use of Infiltration. (She should be good at casing places, right?!) In this case, she can spend a point of Infiltration to learn what she wants about the property from maps. I'm going to assume you spend the point:

You find that the two-story town house backs up to a wooded area. There are about 10 feet of grass between the woods and back porch and sliding door of the house to.

The town home is attached to one other unit. The other units are about 20 feet away on either side. Each town home has two individual spots to park cars---in other words, you park on the opposite side of the townhouse from your attached unit.

You could definitely find out more by going to the property, but this is what you get from the maps.

Gabriella:
Gabbie will prepare for a break in if Hung's plan doesn't work

She will spend 2 points of preparedness to have the appropriate tools to break into a house including security system jammers.

Ok. Let's say you have all the gear you need because you asked Rudek's lackeys to provide it. Preparedness is usually used in the thick of things/heat of the moment, when something would prove really useful. Also, it looks like you only have 1 point you could spend.

Gabriella:
She will also take with her an external network access device so she can set up a back door for Hung to access the targets computer system remotely.

This would be a Mechanics test, which you have no skill in, so likely you would not succeed---not your wheelhouse. However, if Lee is with you, he could tackle this no problem.

If Lee's not with you, he could talk you through the process on the comm. Mechanically, he would spend points on the Mechanics test. All the points he spends MINUS ONE would boost your die roll. The one point is the cost of Cooperation. Also, because you're doing something you don't normally do, the target difficulty would be a little higher.

In NBA, usually the Director doesn't share what the target number is, so you're never be quite sure how difficult a task is. That said, if the normal TN for this is 4, I'd say it's a 5 for Gabbie. (so a +1 to TN for the difficulty).

Gabriella:
She will also have small cameras and listeners to dot round the house.

You have Electronic surveillance, so you can set this up, no problem. The problem would be if someone (neighbor?) sees you doing this. If you guys are disguised as repair people, it probably wouldn't be suspicious. Unless, for example, there was an old nosy neighbor who notices uniformed people about and confronts you or tells Lennart about it.

To avoid this, you could plant the stuff sneakily... this would be an Infiltration test.
d6 + points you want to spend. This could be a piggybacked roll if Lee is helping you. (You spend for the roll, Lee spends one to be a part of the action.)

Gabriella:
Gabbie will break into the house
On the morning of the second day once the target has left and Quinn has provided confirmation that there is only the target living there. and Hung's plan has already been tried

Breaking in is an Infiltration test. I think we might have a few things to resolve before we roll for this, but I could be wrong. :)
