Scene: Service Accessway, Zigursky Penitentiary

"Schrodinger's Penitentiary"

Service Tunnels (Elevator Shafts & Sewer Ducts) - Doom Pool: 0
Narrow & Winding Passages
Scorched Earth

Avoiding the potential hazards and lethal implementation currently being employed against literally every single living being in the Detainment Center, UV and Sister Moon manage to make their way through the yellowish haze to a service exit which they pass post haste. Still coughing and heaving from the fumes, despite trading breaths through the gas mask Sister Moon was able to acquire, UV can't help but marvel at the efficiency unto which a full blown riot was quelled...albeit via the use of extreme countermeasures. She is not certain any survived...including Aegis-Magus, Windwalker and Crimson Fury whom the security systems prevented her from reuniting with. She is likewise uncertain of her newfound ally whose methods skirt dangerously close to the life UV strove to leave behind. Still, any port in the storm...and in this particular instance, it's shelter well worth seeking if the Detainment Center was any clue as to how bad things had gotten. Whoever was causing this was playing for keeps...she lost track of the number of inmates and guards they past as they pressed towards the exit.

Sister Moon can't help but feel Iah's ire...an entity of vengeance, certainly, but what happened here was not done out of vengeance. In truth, Sister Moon could feel or tell any kind or sort of emotional drive at all regarding this...it was as if whoever, or whatever, was causing this had no really emotional involvement. While those who were incarcerated certainly deserved some sort of punishment...all were dealt with in the same fashion, and that's not how vengeance works. It wasn't vengeance she bore witness to...it was just plain unbridled manslaughter. Many escaped just punishment by being denied the punishment they deserved due to the senseless slaughter displayed before her. There'll be another time for the others, for now, whoever was behind the security systems was due a vistation of how vengeance is dealt. The service tunnels and ventilation ducts may provide a more safe, albeit convoluted, route around the existing security means and measures still highly active in their area. They needed to move, though...the 'hero' she ran into would have no time for rest - much more needed done before any rested this day.

Inside the service tunnels allowed for only a moment of respite, the whole area radiates a profoundly depressed state, encouraging thoughts of doubt and uncertainty. Were they heading the right way, were they lost, were they even making a difference...both Sister Moon and UV find themselves assailed with such thoughts as they cautiously moved forward. The deeper they went, the greater the melacholy set in...it was Iah that provided Sister Moon with an inkling of awareness - they were not alone in these debris strewn service accessways...someone, or something, that most assuredly deserved to have vengeance wrought upon them. The stench of death from many, many callous murders eminate from a source...very close by. Determined to determine the source's origin, Sister Moon leaves UV's side and into the shadows of the unknown...

"Sssooo much sssuffering...," echoes an obscure voice, "...exquisssite." A woman steps into view, seemingly out of the very air itself, her visage distorted and wavering...wispy and ghostlike. "...but...it'sss fading, dying..." She turn baleful eyes towards UV with an emotionless facade, "Misssery lovesss...company."

Evelyne DaVore's mutant gene kicked off at an early start when her parents committed suicide leaving her to an orphanage, which eventually burned down, to a string of foster homes, which frequently ended up as home violence dispute case numbers. It took profound effort to her to not display the pleasure she felt when miserable things occured and frequently questioned her sanity. It wasn't until she encountered Dominae that she discovered the lengths of her capabilities; she was an empath of devastating capacity - she constantly generates an aura of raw depression that afflicts literally anything known living. Wherever she walked, a wave of despair followed...and what was worse, she literally thrived in the face of suffering she caused - she grew addicted.

She was finally caught and sentenced to life in prison, she didn't mind, the smart ones gave her room...and The Zig was a carte blanche of misery. Once the alarms tripped, and the cell doors and inhibitor collars disengaged...she was able to tap into such emotional stress that her first victim (a guard), suffered a stroke-induced brain aneurysm. Anyone who saught to restrain her felt so miserable that some simply decided to take their own lives just for thinking about it. Even the passive standing too close were caught up in her wave of despair and left with crippling psychoses. Now the numbers were thinning, and misery loves company...but Morose's company always suffer - she strives to assure this by assailing UV and Sister Moon with a crippling wave of emotional despair.

OOC: Well, this scene starts with a cliff-hanger of sorts as Sister Moon walks into the shadows and out of the scene. So it's just UV (consequently, UV can still use the D6 Gas Mask resource, no plot point expenditure needed). Since everyone involved has equal senses/reflexes, I'll go ahead and spend a Doom Die in order to interrupt the action sequence (Doom Pool is now 2D8) allowing Morose to go first. She does so by creating a Scene Distinction - Region of Despair, causing the whole area to become awash with a sense of utter misery which she'll most certainly use to her advantage and harass UV in the process. UV, you get to act. Due to the lack of time available to recover, UV will still be suffering from the gas in the previous scene and starts out with D6 Physical Stress. :/

UV shook her head, trying to clear herself of not only the gas trying to choke her, but the distinct presence of Morose as well. The villain before her, a creature vile enough that other supervillains stayed clear, was likely going to be needing a beat down to be solved. For a few seconds, UV thought about how she might be facing down a would-be hero if she was attempting an escape from the facility. Pushing the thoughts away, she focused on Morose. UV began to burn with a bright aura in an attempt to flood the space with enough light and heat to dislodge Morose and counter the mutant’s abilities. “I’d know that hiss anywhere. Fitting I’d have to crawl into a sewer to find you, Morose. Don't think I won’t hesitate to burn you out like a cancer. Out of my way!”, she said in her best menacing tones as she sent a warning shot towards the Mistress of Misery. This battle was going to be a match of wills, but sending a ball of fire at near plasma temperatures should get the message across that UV was in no mood to play around.

The blast of plasma sears past Morose as she raised her hands to shield her face from the scorching thermal emission... before fading from view with a harrowing screech as if she were made of smoke. A panicked, nervous laughter can be heard shortly thereafter...

Drawing upon the misery already permeating the area, Morose defends herself by attempting to misdirect UV and erode her confidence to eliminate the effectiveness of her intimidation attempt.

OOC: She fails and I have to expend a Doom Die just to provide her with some sense of personal resolve as she is certainly shaken by UV's display. Morose is 'Intimidated' with a D10 Effect (would've been D12 without the Doom Die. It's clear Morose is taking her encounter with UV, also known as Corona, seriously. Nonetheless...spurned on by her own brush with suffering, she presses on!

"YOU want ME to suffer, Corona?" Morose's voice quavers in response, "I suppose it's true...leopards and their spots. Let's talk about what makes you suffer, instead. It'll make me feel better..."

On her action, Morose delivers a psychic assault as she callously strives to tear into UV's mind and cause her to relive her least favored memory in the form of an Emotional Complication - 'Horrors Of The Past'.

While not exactly Mind Control (UV doesn't lose connection with player agency), it will manifest as gut-wrenching regret as despair settles in making it difficult to concentrate on anything else except for what UV associates her most despairing moment with.

UV shook her head as she felt the increasing pressure of the psychic assault. She could tell that the woman was on edge and that UV had gotten to her. Feeling that she couldn't give up the initiative, UV tried to counter the attack with one of her own. The former villain sent a series of bright beams towards where she thought the other woman was, trying to disorient or even temporarily blind Morose. As she did, she used her own knowledge of covert tactics to narrow down where the villain was hiding and countered Morose's banter with some of her own. "Morose, your mind is in such a cold, dark place. Let's brighten it and turn on the heat!"

Eep! A couple of things need to be pointed out. In a reaction roll, you won't be able to use your Burnout SFX (requires an action roll, not reaction). Second, in a reaction roll against a Psychic Attack - Psychic Resistance, some Character Distinction that implies strength of will (i.e. - Stubborn), and/or the Psych specialty are pretty much the options available (yes, psychic characters are dangerous). Menace specialty could be used in this particular instance since Morose is using a form of emotional attack, and UV isn't so easily influenced by emotional impulses. I'm going to go ahead and spend the other Doom Die in order to eliminate Morose's Emotional Stress (Intimidation) via her SFX - Nothing But Despair, as she's not one to experience anything relatively emotional overlong as she has a tendency to be nothing more than an emotional void/sponge. Since it seems you're also away at the current time and moment - I'll go ahead and take over temporary character agency and roll for you.

Mender Phantasm, on behalf of UV, rolled 4,7 using d10,d8.
Solo: D10
Menace Expert: D8
Total: 11
Effect: Default D4

UV feels a slight twinge as if some needle-like sensation was creeping all over her skin. Uncertain of what the sensation implied, or even where Morose actually lied, she considers her options as she inquires, "Morose, this is stupid. Take a look around you, the Zig's run amok! We should be working together and try to put a stop to this!"

UV actually manages to withstand the psychic assault and she strives to remain rooted in her core values, refusing to be swayed into despair from her past actions that threaten to resurface once more! Since that was the end of that action round, and since UV's player is MIA...the ball is handed back to Morose, who emboldened by her recovery from UV's attempt to undermine her emotionally - cuts loose with another brutal Psychic assault determined to draw forward the sense of suffering she senses buried deep within UV's psyche.

Since UV doesn't have a good idea where Morose is, other than within the general area, I'll go ahead and have UV have Morose go first. While certainly a most dangerous form of cat and mouse, she hopes that Morose may reveal herself.

Lingering just outside UV's perspective, Morose strives to dig her psychic hooks in...relying upon her capacity to keep UV clueless to her whereabouts, she strive to turn her awareness of UV's location via her psychic senses into a targeting means to drive her psychic assault home.

UV strives to resist once more, having little else to rely on but her will to succeed and her knowledge how emotions can be used to manipulate others.

...and fails as she finds herself unable to keep the horrors of the past at bay, her mind now becomes awash with the memories of the things she'd rather forget. The slam of the gavel, the jury's unanimous decree - murderer. The scent of burning flesh, the screams of a child. The death of an innocent, and she was the cause...

"NOOO!" UV screams as she clutches the side of her head as if she could physically force the horrors from her mind. Gone are the considerations of being polite and congeal, restraint is no longer a question she considers viable...or optional. UV cuts loose in frantic determination, even though by doing so...she only reinforces the horrible visions of what caused her to be labelled a murderer in the first place. She had to take Morose out...before she drove UV insane!

During UV's time to act, and while UV doesn't have an area effect ability, I'll have UV spend a Plot Point in order to simulate the effect by trying to hit Morose, as well as the entire scene, with an effect die. She will also use her Burnout SFX, stepping up her Solar Blast from D10 to D12, but will be using her Reformed Villain at a hinderance because she's remembering the horrible things she did and it's interfering with her ability to function. She gains a plot point for this so she experiences no net change in Plot Points. I'm also going to break down her Combat Expert from D8 to 2D6 to represent her difficulty in focus. I get the feeling Morose won't survive this...

Solo: D10
Reformed Villain: D4

I'm going to opt to do something interesting and use the two highest die as the effect die to represent UV's unfocused, but certainly cataclysmic blast. Since there's no Doom Pool, she can essentially just set up a scenic distinction without any kind or sort of real resistance. We'll call this scenic distinction 'Scorched Earth' and have it replace the existing scenic distinction, Lingering Fumes & Residual Debris, representing that practically nothing remains within the narrow and winding hallways. Morose now needs to survive D12 Physical Stress.

Solo: D8
Narrow & Winding Passages: D8
Psychic Misdirection: D8
Covert Expert: D8
UV's Emotional Stress: D8
Mender Phantasm, for the NPC Morose, rolled 4,1,6,1,2 using 5d8.
Total: 10
Effect: D8
Opps: 2

While still striving to tear into UV's minds, Morose's subtle misdirections and overall mental assault impair UV's ability to direct her Solar Blast effectively. Scouring the entire area with a blast of near indescribable heat, residual debris and lingering fumes are literally scorched out of existence. If it weren't for the winding hallways, Morose would most likely have suffered the same fate...

Morose got lucky...that roll nearly got her wiped. UV gains two Plot Points, but opts to only gain one in order to prevent her Solar Blast from Shutting Down, thanks to the Opps Morose rolled, and now it's Morose's turn to act.

"How are you going to fight despair, my dear Corona - the murderess, child-killer? It made you who you are today, so if you really want to kill the past...you're going to have to kill yourself..." Morose's oily voice echoes throughout the winding hallways as she reasserts her emotional barrage on an already beleaguered heroine.

While parting would probably have been wiser, considering the sheer amount of damage UV caused when she cut loose, Morose's insatiable desire to cause suffering definitely comes into play as a negative, the Doom Pool gains a D6. Alas, like before, UV has precious little to pull from by way of resisting...having nothing more than her certainty of individual potential and her awareness of how aggressive manipulations work.

...and she experiences a whooping D12 Emotional Stress (D8 stepped up two times due to the exceptional success Morose attained). The Doom Pool gains another D6 from the opportunity UV rolled. UV also gains a Plot Point, but since she's still relatively unclear where Morose actually is, plus her rather astounding degree of emotional torment she's now experiencing, I'm going to say she's going to try her best just to get away!

Screaming in utter despair and panic, UV lights up and rockets off...where she cannot seem to tell or even remotely concerned how! Ricocheting off walls and through doorways as the insistent sound of a gavel can be heard pounding over and over in her mind as the sounds of a wailing child can be heard in an ever increasing screech! She had to get away...far away, as fast as she could possibly muster!

UV's going to try and create an Asset for herself - GETTING OUTTA HERE! The passages won't work in her favor, so she gets a Plot Point for that, and since she's really not too concerned exactly how she escapes - she starts using her criminal expertise to take the shortest route possible, if that means breaking and entering to destruction of property, at this point - she's all game for that!

Wow, not bad...she just might make it with just one roll. Morose doesn't exactly try to impede her, just keep a bead on her...and since UV is experiencing D12 Emotional Stress, to Morose (with her Psychic Senses)...she's like a literal beacon. Distance isn't exactly too much a factor unless UV leaves the scene entirely.

Interesting...she almost made it, even though Morose's effect die was initially greater. UV's effect die steps up twice due to the exceptional success to D12, and hence isn't reduced one step by Morose's initially superior effect die. UV has almost gotten away! She now has an Asset - GETTING OUTTA HERE! at a D12 rating.

It'll probably be a waste, but I'll go ahead and blow the 2D6 the Doom Pool gained in order to make this situation a real cliff hanger. That'll bring Morose's total up to 15. Does UV hold out and escape?

It's not enough, even though she does spend a  Plot Point in order to add all three die preventing Morose's Effect Die from stepping up. Along with UV's superior effect die, Morose only manages to afflict D6 Emotional Stress. Unfortunately, UV succumbs to the psychic assault, experiencing beyond D12 Emotional Stress. As per Morose's SFX (Self-Destructive Tendencies), not only does she experience Emotional Trauma...she experiences Physical Trauma.

Unable to escape the images that torment her heart and mind, UV steadily loses all sense of hope and focus. Determined to put a stop to it, she plows directly into the nearest wall with enough force that even her famed durability fails to compensate for. Morose merely approaches slowly and casually, looking upon the splayed body of the enigmatic villain-turned-hero as a trickle of blood escapes her nose and mouth. "Such sweet suffering," coos Morose as she gently strokes UV's comatose face before slowly striding off in what looks to be a drug-induced haze...

This ends the Action Scene, UV is left with D6 Physical and Emotional Trauma while Morose wanders off to find another to provide the "fix" she craves...the Region of Despair Morose created fades along with her...

Meanwhile...

Inside the Armory, a Zigursky Penitentiary Guard kneels on the ground wrapped in barbed chains as dozens of other guards, and inmates, stand around him watching as an ornate collar clasps around his neck. He twitches spasmadically, causing the chains to rattle...and tighten...before he finally slumps his head forward, his breathing leveling and deepening.

"Do you feel better, pet?" croons a sultry voice.

He raises his head with vacant stare and replies in a hollow voice, "Yes Dominae."

The chains fall from around his body though he makes no attempt to rise. "Good, now go join the others..."

Silently he stands and joins the rest as they disperse about the area, collared like the rest of them.

A haughty voice can be heard as a female inmate approaches, holding an inhibitor collar in her grasp, "Collars, seriously? You're still relying on them? I thought this little incident bore proof that collars break..." As if to emphasize her point, she discards the inhibitor collar with a look of abject disdain as it clatters on the floor.

The other woman, similarly garbed in an inmate uniform, festooned with a barbed chain harness simply smiles and says, "Oh Twilight, I'm well aware of the potential of my little collars. I thought you understood the concept: strength in numbers." Scores of eyes turn to look at the woman called Twilight who merely sneers in response before saying, "Then we're a member short, did Morose not survive?"

The woman called Dominae merely laughs and strokes one of the chains as it twines about her like a living snake before replying, "Morose? Perish here? In this den designed for suffering? No, I have no doubt she's alive and well...let her have her fun, she'll be along soon enough..."

Transition Scene - In The Wake Of Sadness

Crimson Fury, Windwalker and the Warden wind their way to the nearest doorway leading to the Access Hallways that interconnect the majority of this level aboard the crimson construct the crimson crusader created. The most notable thing that draws their attention is the astounding degree of heat that can be felt prior to entry...and upon entry (with difficulty as the doorway seems literally fused to the frame), a literal depiction of what the military concept of 'Scorched Earth' looks like. Everything is blackened and burnt beyond description...

"What in blazes happened?..." is all the Warden can utter as he gapes at the wholesale destruction displayed before them.

A tell-tail trail of destruction following the apparent thermal blast leads in the direction CF can ascertain as the direction UV had went. A series of walls show profound impact as if a massive weight collided with them, cratering walls and knocking security doors off their tracks...which finally ends, where UV lies. The wall before her looks to have been impacted with incredible force while UV looks to have recieved a life threatening concussion - her breathing is shallow, she's bleeding, and it looks as if her shoulder has been dislocated. It's as if she were spiked headlong into the wall with extreme force!

What do Tenzing and Crimson Fury do?

He remembered from the war the rebels would some times bobby trap a wounded solider in order to kill anyone coming to rescue them. He moved over, trusting his own field to protect him from said traps if they where there.

Once he has checked its safe, he will try to coat UV in a aura of his red energy. He could let her float on the aura that surrounded her-thus letting Windwalker do his healing work.

Windwalker lets Crimson Fury look UV over then he moves in to help.
If you had know anything of old Chinese art of healing you would be scratching your head.  Like wise if you where a modern surgeon with great technology of Paragon City you to would be scratching your head.  For now Windwalkers skills incorporate both technick.  Routed in old art of the monks.  Knowing pressure points and skills at dressing wounds.  However his understanding of body that old monks never new added new dimension to his work.  Soon he had UV physically fix.  Her mind however would be another issue.

OOC:
Use 1 PP to us SXF heal UV D6 physical damage.
3 exp for healing UV first time.

With what care is provided, UV's bleeding is staunched and her injuries treated with Windwalker's profound sense of knowing how to bring balance and stability to the grievously injured. Alas, even with Tenzing's knowledge  and skill...she seems to be suffering from more than just a traumatic head injury. Even as she's slowly roused to consciousness, she mutters over and over subconsciously about something not being her fault...

Tenzing is able to recover UV's Physical Trauma, he pops her shoulder back in place, applies a sufficient bandage to help deal with the concussion she received, but her Emotional Trauma (D6) still lingers afflicting her with a lingering sense of despair and doubt...which reminds me, once UV is brought back to some sense of consciousness - how does she respond to her being awakened? She no longer has Physical or Emotional Stress, just the Emotional Trauma so she can act.

OOC:
What would I be rolling against if Windwalker tries to deal with Emotional Trauma?
What would he need to take effect.  My dice would be D10, D6, 2D8.

Well, you could spend 2 Plot Points and eliminate her Physical Trauma, but she would still have D6 Emotional Trauma. In order to recover that, she'd have to willingly comply...and that ultimately depends on her. I'll wait for her response regarding this, but if there's no response, I'm going to go ahead and go along with the idea that she refuses to be psych evaluated by someone she hardly even knows. She'll keep insisting that she's 'fine', but it's clear she's experienced some severe emotionally shock...she's pale, her skin's clammy, and she can occasionally be heard berating herself saying things like 'It wasn't my fault'...but that's about it.

"What's wrong with her?" inquires the Pilot as he keeps watch along the blasted winding hallways as Tenzing finishes treating UV to the best of his abilities.

The Warden merely winces as he leans against the wall, likewise keeping watch though glances at UV as she mutters to herself and frowns, "Remember the service technician, Caleb?"

The Pilot replies, "Yeah, he was testing the functionality of an inhibitor collar, put a drill to his...waitaminute...you mean Evelyne?...MOROSE?!?"

The Warden merely nods grimly as the Pilot can be heard saying over and over, "Oh shit, we're fucked, man...we're totally screwed..."

The Warden merely mutters, "Of all the ones I hoped didn't survive...guess today is the day for bad luck..."

UV suddenly snapped back to reality as the Pilot shouted the name of UV's nemesis. "The woman is evil," she said, as she got up slowly. Still shaky, UV seemed distant as she spoke. "I've done things. Hurt people. I didn't mean to. It wasn't my fault, but it still happened." she said with a deep breath, "Things that I'll live with for the rest of my life. She saw to that. She thrives on suffering. She has to be put down," UV states with a menacing tone.

Turning to Windwalker, UV nods. "Thank you. I really appreciate the help. I'm not really used to help."

OOC: UV is going to spend a PP to convert the Emotional Trauma from Depression to Vengeance. Basically she keeps it, but can now focus it against Morose. Is that okay?

I couldn't imagine it any other way...I'm certain UV would love nothing more than to rip Morose a new one. The Plot Point expenditure and change in how the Emotional Trauma is represented is more than understandable. Good work on coming up with a comprehensive explanation why this occurred. :D

The Warden only looks momentarily at UV with a sidelong glance. She can tell by his dubious look that he recalls her from the time before she became an acting member of Hero Corps before saying, "Well, if we're all done licking our wounds...we got a Penitentiary to secure."

The Warden suggests continuing through the Service Access Hallways, down through the levels to the Armory, though is willing to consider alternatives if any are presented in regarding how the team gets there.

Mark nodded at UV, his gaze distant and then he snaps back to the present. "Yeah. Yeah...I know what you mean." He set his jaw and his eyes glowed red. "We will get her. I will help you. I promise."

He then turns to the warden when he asks about getting things secure. "Right, right. We need to secure the armory first. There are still decent people trapped here, and that's the key to keep the prisoners inside these walls. Let's go." He once again scoops up the pilot and the warden in his glowing red sphere, and flys towards the armory with his passengers in tow. He trusts UV and Windwalker to follow under their own power.

Re: Scene: Service Accessway, Zigursky Penitentiary

Book of Wisdom Volume I. Giving and receiving are different sides of the same coin.  A coin has no real use unless it changes hands over and over again

(Pupil): Master the old woman was poor yet you eat her food.
(The Temple Master): And in return by eating it I gave her a blessing and lifted her soul.  She will sleep at peace tonight.  We both gave to receive.  that is how it should be.

Windwalker looks carefully into UV eyes.  Then over to Crimson Fury.
Well girly.  The monk says.
You are in good company.
All three of has blood on our hands that result of others playing nasty games.
We could play the game how many body bags have you got.
Only problem is it take me to much time to remember them all.
It is good to help others girly.  It is also good to let others help you.  Balance in all things.

If she looks into the monks eyes she will sense a man who seems to have more year than even his middle age frame should suggest he should have seen.  Many spend alone.
He gets up.
Few people are really evil, but if she is and she thrives on suffering.  I may be one thing she will hate.  But I know telling you two to leaver her to me will not work.

The monk smile his normal kind warm smile.
