Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

In reply to Grimsby H. Baskerville (msg # 743):

"Then, if that is the course we are going to pursue, might I suggest either fleeing back to Gibraltar or even straight to England--but in either locale, might we call upon your influence with British Officialdom, Mister Baskerville?" Joseph suggests, "Actually, on second thought, perhaps it would be best to go straight to England.  While I'm sure the officials in Gibraltar would likely help us, they would not appreciate the headache we would provide in their relations with Spain.  Yes, England will be best, I think."

"Therefore, let us quickly load Doctor Solar's equipment onto his wagon and hitch up the horses, then we can swing by our hotel to check out and get our gear, then go and find this ship.  Tell me, Doctor, did Shilling, here, ever mention where he was meeting with his 'ship' within your hearing?"

"It's one thing to have opportunity drop into your lap," Brie suggested. "It's a whole 'nother issue to chase after someone across an entire country."

"If we do, indeed, abscond with their airship, they won't have any idea where we went. Pretty much the whole world would be open to us. We could go to India! We could go to Greece... or South Africa... or Sweden... or Brazil... or the United States."

"They would have to have significant world contacts to find where we went. And how, then, would they follow?"

"Only the airship would give them a means to follow us. And finding us is still not as assured a thing as you think, Joseph. We could lay low somewhere until they gave up looking for us. We could always go in the direction they're least likely to expect us to go."

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

Grimsby remarked, "I believe that if we went to Britain, I could indeed ensure that we received welcome and support from Her majesty's government. However, if these fellows or their allies realize that a largely British, or at least Anglo-American, party had taken their airship, they would be likely to look for it en route to Britain. Since we did talk to folk in the town, I expect anyone inquiring about strangers in the area would be told there were English speakers about."

"Does anyone know where the airship is ? As for a destination I have an estate in Scotland that no prying eyes would see the airship should we make for it or an alternative in Bedfordshire that would be harder to approach without being seen. Either way I think we should probably get moving....."

"I have no idea where the ship of theirs is," Solar responds, "though it does seem as if we are trying to convince ourselves that it is, indeed, an airship."

"If so, it must be hidden in a valley or ravine somewhere nearby. I met them in Andorra, originally. Well, Helmuth and Enrico. I hadn't yet worked out all the details of my invention. I was planning on heading to Gibraltar because I wanted to visit Algiers."

"They said they'd meet me here in Sedonia."

"You know the rest."

"Oh wow, an airship!" Catherine exclaimed excitedly. "How exciting!"

"Thinking about it..." Catherine said. "If we didn't want these fellows to follow us right away, we could freeze them. It's safe, isn't it, Doctor?"

"Of course, that's only if we feel that the proper authorities wouldn't be willing to take these fellows in to custody, and I'm sure they would. After all, we've done nothing wrong, and the word of Gentlemen and Ladies surely counts for more than the word of men such as these kidnappers."

In reply to Grimsby H. Baskerville (msg # 750):

"I wish I could be as confident of that as you are, my dear Grimsby." Joseph says, frowning down at the recumbent Mr. Shilling, "But history has shown, and not too long ago, that money and special interests can and do often prevail over the rule of law."

"Not that I doubt the veracity of the good Doctor, here, mind you, but look at our situation from an outside, objective viewpoint--we have only Doctor Solar's statement that he was placed under duress by these gentlemen.  He, himself, has said that they corresponded with him in efforts to become investors in his device--that means there is some documentation that might support any story Shilling and his cronies might say against us.  The Doctor was not bound or held prisoner in a room--he has been seen travelling around the town.  And, Miss Brie, in that--vision, or whatever--you got from the man who was frozen, did you not say you only saw Doctor Solar in it?  Can you say if anyone else was in that vision?"

"You see the problem, my friends?  As I said, I do believe the tale told by Doctor Solar, it has something of the ring of truth to it--though what that is, I cannot put my finger upon just at this moment.  But my gut says he's telling the truth, and my gut's gotten me out of a lot of trouble in the past, so I'll listen to it now."

Grimsby replied, "As I explained earlier, the present Spanish royal family has reasons to be favorably inclined to Britain, and while of course one cannot expect the local authorities to be unduly influenced by that fact, I should think it might be of some use."

In reply to Grimsby H. Baskerville (msg # 752):

Joseph rests his hand on the butt of his over-sized and holstered pistol, tapping a finger on the wooden grip as he stares down at the dirt--occasionally over to Shilling--and ponders several things.  After a few minutes he looks up and speaks.

"Miss Brie, I do not claim to understand how it is you do what you do with these abilities that you claim.  However I cannot deny the evidence of my very own eyes, that they do indeed work.  However, even having said that, I am still in a state of profound ignorance as to what all else you might be able to do."

"An idea has just now come upon me, and in order to pursue it I must ask of you a question, or two, pursuant to these...mystic...abilities of yours.  And as I must ask them from a foundation of complete and total ignorance, I beg that you take no offense, should I inadvertently insult you."

"It's just that, I recalled, at the hospital, how you managed to...see...for yourself, an image that was in the head of the man, there.  I began to wonder--though that man was awake and aware, thus able to follow your guidance in calling up the imagery in his head, have you ever...what I mean to ask, is..."

Joseph shifts his gaze down to the recumbent form of Shilling, lying on the ground, soundly unconscious.

"Have you ever tried to do what you did at the hospital on a sleeping person?  Perhaps, we might be able to discern if Shilling actually has an airship, and if he does, maybe where it is located...?"

Grimsby remarks, "I am equally ignorant of the full extent of Miss O"Malley's abilities, but if she could indeed read the mind of a sleeping man, she might provide us with very valuable informal. We cannot spent too much time seeking a possible airship when we do not know where it is or even whether it truly exists."

"That, of course, was my issue with using the ray on a real live person," Solar responds. "I, at least, wished to remain behind and observe the thawing process. These investors--and I use the term very loosely--didn't care one iota about the victim. They were only concerned that the weapon worked."

"And that's another thing! They kept calling it a weapon! That was not what I invented it for. I suppose, though, that any decent tool can be used as a weapon. I guess I was being naive to not consider that."

"The others went out among the townsfolk to gather news of the Frozen Man. I don't think they bothered with much detail. He thawed out without any harmful effects, I'm happy to say."

"So, would it be safe to freeze these men? Probably. If not, then it is no more than they deserve!"

"We could certainly freeze them, then stand them up in a corner here, surrounded by bales of straw. That might even keep them frozen longer."

"A woman should never give away all her secrets," Brie responded a bit coyly to Joseph and Grimsby.

"I will say that you know most of them. And while I am not at all sure, I believe it is possible for me to learn more at some point, though I have no idea how to do so at this time."

"As for reading the mind of an unconscious person, yet, it is something I can do. It is even easier than if he's awake. But, as you pointed out, Joseph, it is much harder to direct the thoughts of a sleeping man."

"Alas, I cannot put thoughts into his head--yet--but if you wish me to do this, you could probably help me by saying something... like, tell him the ship is on fire. It has been demonstrated on numerous occasions that the sleeping consciousness is partially aware of what goes on around the person while he's asleep. It's the main reason a loud noise will wake someone up."

"Any suggestion as to which one's mind I should attempt to read?"

In reply to Brie O'Malley (msg # 756):

"Oh, Shilling, here, I should think.  Yes?" Joseph turns to look for agreement from Grimsby, then Dr. Solar, "It was Shilling you said was giving the orders, was it not, Doctor?"

Joseph thought for a moment, then said to Brie, "What if Grimsby and I stood close by--in case Shilling awoke, for some reason--while you...do what you do--I don't think I even have the words, here..."

Joseph grins, then gestures between himself and Grimsby, "But while you do that, Grimsby and I will both say things like 'Get Solar to The Ship' and 'To The Ship' and 'Quickest Way to The Ship' and other things like that, in quiet voices.  We just keep saying those things, over and over--maybe it will...filter in? for lack of a better term...and make his unconscious mind think not only about the ship, itself, but maybe how he planned to get to it."

"After all, we're still not sure that the ship mentioned may not be a steamer docked at Cadiz."

"Oh!  Say, Grimsby!  We should have Miss Catherine do this with us--you know how the sound of a gentle, woman's voice can draw a man's attention!  It may do so now, even with slime like Shilling, yes?"

Grimsby replied, "I will certainly cooperate with your plan, and I trust that Catherine will do the same; she does have a sweet voice which might well move a man --conscious or not --and as long as he is unconscious, he should do her no harm --though you and I will need to be alert, just in case the words awaken him and he attempts to spring into action."

Brie goes about doing her thing. While she's attempting to read the mind of Schilling, Grimsby, Catherine and Joseph begin to say things. Grimsby and Joseph just speak normally while Catherine whispers in his ear.

After only about a minute, Brie is able to report that the airship is in a ravine on the south side of town.

"Well, to be honest," Brie explains, "I think it's an airship. It's floating off the ground... as near as I can tell, but it looks more like an ocean-going ship rather than one of those German zeppelins."

"Sometimes, of course, it's a rather skewed view of what the person was seeing. I didn't get a glimpse of any crew on the ship, for instance, so it just may be that Herr Schilling didn't consider them important enough to think of."

"Probably for the best." Joseph says, "From what I've heard down in German East Africa, operation of the Liftwood vessels is more similar to ocean-going vessels than is operation of the German Zeppelins--thus, with only some difficulty, I should be able to fly it.  Fingers crossed--heh-heh."

"Alright, then--Felicity, if you and the other ladies, here, would be so kind as to keep an eye on our slumbering guests, we gentlemen shall assist Doctor Solar in packing up everything here that he needs to take.  Doctor Solar, would you be morally opposed to freezing these gentlemen, given the dual facts that your device has been proven to be non-lethal and that these so-called gentlemen held you against your will?"

"If not, we can just freeze them and go, otherwise we shall have to bind them when we leave and hope that they stay unconscious long enough for us to get a good head start before they start screaming, for we cannot gag them--they might then never get loose or get freed, and could then die.  We don't want that."

"Time is of the essence, even should these men be frozen, so from here we should go and settle our business with the hotel, then head straight out to the airship--agreed, everyone?  When--and if--we have secured that means of travel, we can then decide where, exactly we should next go, in order to resolve this issue with the Doctor."

"For if we do not resolve it, we could end up being labeled as criminals, ourselves, wanted internationally for kidnapping the Doctor and stealing the airship."

"Are we in agreement, then?  Ladies, please watch the prisoners.  Gentlemen, let us ready the wagon and Doctor Solar's amazing device.  Slap leather, boys!"

"My concern is for my horses. I'd hate to lose them, but if we can find a good home for them locally, I wouldn't be too unhappy."

"On the other hand, we can probably load the wagon onto this ship, but wherever we wind up going, I'd have to get more horses to pull the wagon."

Felicity has been keeping an eye on the unconscious men, holding her revolver in her hand. If one of them appeared to be waking up, she could always hit him with the gun, either the butt or the side.

"So, Brie... can you put them to sleep again if they should start to wake up?" she asked the Irish lass.
