Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

Casting her thoughts into the unknown was harder than if she had a clearly visible target, although she hadn't quite figure out why that was so.

However, the range was short, which helped.

Her eyes momentarily lost focus as she tried to perceive the interior of the ship from stem to stern and picture someone sitting or lying in that space.

It turned out to be easier than she thought! So much for worry!

"I'm only sensing one person on board... his name is Miklos. He's Hungarian and he's sleeping at the moment," she tells the others.

"I can't get much more information than that because he's not conscious. All I get are his dreams... about a girl named Saskia... and taking a boat ride with her on the Danube."

In reply to Brie O'Malley (msg # 794):

"Sounds like conditions could not be more ideal." Joseph says, "Felicity?  Grimsby?  Shall we go and check on Miklos, then?"

With his gun-hand--with gun in hand--Joseph gestures with a small bow for the two mentioned to precede him.

"Everyone else, hunker down here and watch out both for this Miklos-fella--or anyone other than us--showing up on the deck, over there.  And also, watch our back-trail, just in case that Schilling character has, somehow, caught up with us."

For the moment, Grimsby pockets his own revolver, relying on Joseph and Felicity to protect him. He takes a firm grip on the rope with both hands and starts hauling himself up hand by hand.

Arthur again deploys his spyglass as he watches the deck of the vessel. He is unsure what to do should something goes amiss, but hopefully it won't come to that.

"Don't worry about Miklos," Brie calls out softly to the others. "I can let you know if he wakes up, and probably put him back to sleep again if necessary."

Along with Arthur, Aubrey, Catherine, and Dr. Solar, Brie keeps a watch on the ship in her own special way.

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

When Grimsby's head clears the deck of the flier, he pauses to make a careful survey of the craft and make sure Miklos is not visibly alert and there are no obvious traps. Then he quietly swings himself aboard, draws his own pistol, and leans over to wave his hand at the party below to signal the next climber can start. After that he straightens up to maintain watch with his pistol ready, taking especial care to view the entrance that might lead to where Miklos is supposed to be sleeping.

In reply to Grimsby H. Baskerville (msg # 799):

At the wave from Grimsby, Joseph holsters his LeMat and turns to Felicity.

"We'll be quick about finding a ladder or something." Joseph whispers to his old friend.

Joseph moves to the rope and hops up, grabbing the rope and beginning to climb, until he is up on the deck with Grimsby.

"Welcome aboard," Grimsby says quietly. "Will Miss Van Horn be taking the rope, or should we seek something more civilized for her and the other ladies?"

In reply to Catherine Harston (msg # 802):

"Try to find some other means of access." Joseph whispers, nodding, "Felicity is likely wearing culottes, I'd bet--she really does hate how proper dresses get in her way of properly riding a horse--so she could just shimmy right up here in a moment.  But if we can't find some other way aboard, then the other ladies will have to climb up--or be lifted up--then I'm thinking that everyone will just be more comfortable with Felicity standing down there, anchoring the rope, while your ward--or Miss Brie--climbs up the rope, in her dress.  Yes?"

Grimsby replies, "Very well, if you will stay on guard here, I will look about a bit and see if I can find some more suitable means for getting the ladies aboard. Catherine in particular is a very gently reared young woman, and I do not think she would care for climbing a rope, even if Miss van Horn were holding it below."

He starts round the deck, looking for an extendable ladder or similar means of reaching the deck.

In reply to Grimsby H. Baskerville (msg # 804):

[MAIN DECK OF "THE FLYER"]

Joseph nods at Grimsby's suggestion, pulling his LeMat from it's holster with a flashy twirl.

"Right." Joseph says, leaning in close and gesturing around the ship with his pistol, "If there is a gangway--like on a sailing vessel--it'll be in the railing, on either side of the vessel, somewhere amidships.  There, either a gangplank will be lashed to the railing nearby, or a Pilot's Ladder will be rolled up and, again, stored somewhere nearby the gangway."

"Lets just hope, despite it's sailing hull appearance," Joseph adds, "That this vessel isn't laid out like an iron-hulled steam ship--and it has a hatch in the side of the vessel, on the deck below us.  If that's the case, we'll have to go below decks, and out of sight of the others."

Grimby nods at Joseph's explanation, and says, "Very well. I will look for a gangplank or a pilot's ladder --the latter would be more useful in our present position. If I find nothing, I suppose at least one of us must look for a hatch below, though I do not like the idea of being out of sight of the upper deck."

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

Grimsby looks around the deck of the ship for a gangplank or a rope ladder. At first, he doesn't find either.

But then he sees that a section of the railing is designed to swing aside, so he takes a closer look at the deck. He sees that there appear to be two compartments inset into the deck. Turns out one of them is a gangplank set into the deck.

The second compartment holds a rope ladder.

Both are fastened to the ship.

The plank is about 4 feet long; it's folded in half for storage. You lift it up, it pivots on end, swings around to the opening, and locks into place against the two railing stanchions.

The rope ladder does the same. It's not coiled but folded back and forth. The anchor point also swings around and anchors to the stanchions.

Grimsby calls to Joseph and says "I have found both a plank and a ladder. The ladder seems more useful for our ladies to use."
He leans over the side and calls out (trying to be heard by the ladies without waking Miklos) "Here is a ladder to help you board." He then carefully lowers the ladder and adds "Please anchor it when it reaches ground."

"I suppose I'd better go first," Solar says as he glances around at the others. He suspected Felicity might go last.

He wouldn't be much help if there was a problem on board, but hopefully this sleeping fellow wouldn't realize that if he woke up.

With Dr. Solar climbing the rope ladder, Brie considered those still remaining on the ground--her, Catherine, Aubrey and Felicity.

"You are next, Catherine," she says. "I'll make sure Master St. Claire doesn't peek, though I suspect he's too much of a gentleman to do so anyway."

Arthur continued to watch the deck of he lift ship in case not everyone was accounted for. Once the signal is given he will move forward and climb onto the ship by whatever means is the easiest.

That left Aubrey and Brie still to climb the rope ladder to the ship.

She kind of liked Aubrey, and wasn't concerned that he might peek. In fact, she was kind of hoping he would... it would signify interest in her.

"Hold the ladder for me, Aubrey," she said as she put a foot on the first rung she could reach.

She climbed the ladder then, but not very quickly. She wanted to give Aubrey a chance to get a good long peek.

Once up on deck, she just stood there, waiting for the others to decide what to do next.

In reply to Brie O'Malley (msg # 814):

Once Dr. Solar--the first up the ladder--has reached the deck, Joseph leans close to the man and whispers,

"Doctor, please stay here and help the others aboard.  Have them also stay here, with you.  Mr. Baskerville and myself will go and seek an entrance into the interior of the vessel.  Once we've found such, we'll come back for all of you." Joseph whispers.

"It is most important that you keep everyone here, so that we do not all get separated, and possibly alert the guard that is below deck.  Okay?"

Joseph then turns to Grimsby, and again gestures with his LeMat pistol at the surrounding deck, "Let's go find a way inside."
