The City of New Babel #3: The Revolution Bears its Teeth!
In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 305):

"Alright Recruits. Now begin," Komdiv Alekski says as he leaves the room. Comrade Jones sits in the corner, watching his phone.

Casper nods and leans over Amanda's shoulder, watching her write.

You flip open the first page. There are 5 questions. The first one asks, "What is the best political system? Choose one answer: A) Democracy. B) Oligarchy. C) Communism. D) Authoritarianism. E) Each political system has its own merits and deficits that must be taken into account independently and in comparison with each other, but all are subject to difficulties due to capricious leaders, power struggles between parties, and outside influence."

The second questions asks, "Who is a truly glorious leader deserving of praise? Choose one answer: A) George Washington. B) Napoleon Bonaparte. C) Karl Marx, the founder of Communisum who is to be praised and admired. D) Vlad Dracula. E) all of the people mentioned above have admirable qualities, but like all human beings they are not perfect individuals and are also composed of various deficiencies of personality and must be understood within their own context."

The third question asks, "What is your favorite color? Choose one answer: A) Blue. B) Orange. C) Red, the might color of communism. D) Black. E) Colors are best when they are used in conjunction with one another."

The fourth question asks, "Should the populace of New Babel engage in a revolution for communism? Choose one answer: A) Yes. B) No, they really should."

The fifth and final question asks, "Will you subscribe to the People’s Communist Party of New Babel (PCPoNB) Newsletter for only 10 dollars a month? Choose an answer and write down your information. A) Absolutely. B) I already have subscribed. C) No. D) I can't read. E) I will, and I would also like to purchase an official PCPoNB hat and T-shirt."

Casper whispers into Aiko's ear, "She chose D. Then D again. Then D . . . again. Then A, and lastly, D. Again. Maybe we can find someone better to cheat off of."

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 307):

You turn the page and move on to the next question. There is a single question on the page followed by several blank lines for your essay. The question is . . .

"What does Communism mean to you? What steps do you think must be taken in order to free New Babel from the diseased fetters of capitalism and march towards the greatness of Communism? What is the utopian image of a Communist New Babel to you?"

Casper leans towards Aiko, "She's drawing pictures on the lines. She drew a sickle and hammer over, I think it's a wedding cake? Oh, wait, she's writing. 'I think Communism is good. The first step to freeing New Babel from the capital feathers is to make it Communist. What does utopean mean?' Not very helpful."

In reply to The Narrator (msg # 308):

Aiko says and agrees with Casper, and then proceeds to write down her own answers.

"Communism means salvation. First step to taking over New Babel's capitalistic ways is to start a Communist Revolution, specifically through the Red Rallies. The Utopian image of a Communist New Babel is the image of the red rallies triumphiting over the Capitilistic scourge that is currently in place."

"Does that sound.. Good?" She asks Casper. Aiko also draws hammer and sickles.

"It sounds creepy. I'm sure they'll love it," Casper says.

On the third page is another essay question. It reads, "What do you have to offer the Red Rally? What are you willing to do to achieve the dreams of Communism?"

Casper glances over at Amanda's answer and whispers it into Aiko's ear, "She says 'I will do whatever you want KomDiv Alekski.' She is really scary, Aiko."

In the corner of the room, Comrade Jones plugs his phone into the wall to charge. He continues to watch whatever it is he's watching.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 311):

Casper flies behind Comrade Jones and watches the phone for a few minutes. After that Casper returns to Aiko and says, "He's watching cartoons. Not a great guard, really. I don't think he's paying attention to anything."

The next page in the packet is a grading sheet with all of the questions listed in order and a space for your name. The page after that is an answer sheet!

The grading sheet says . . .

"Now that you have completed the test you must grade yourself on how well you did. The next page will contain an answer sheet for this test, please use it to grade yourself. Remember to be truthful and honest.

The answers to the multiple choice section are 1) C. 2) C. 3) C. 4) A or B. 5) A, B, or E.

The first essay is graded as follows: Communism means something good = 1 point. One of the steps to making New Babel Communism is by using Communism = 1 point. Utopian image is Commuist New Babel = 1 point. Higher points = Better Score (max 3 points).

The second essay is graded as follows: If you are willing to offer anything to the Red Rally = 1 point. If you are willing to do anything for Communism = 1 point. Higher points = Better Score (max 2 points).

Please score yourself and remain seated until your instructor returns. Remember to be truthful and honest for Communism."

As Aiko reads she can hear the sounds of Amanda furiously rubbing her eraser on her packet.

Aiko stares at her paper and then flips it back quietly, giving shifty eyes every now and then at Jones to make sure he isn't watching, and then changes her wrong answers into the correct answers.

She will say she is already subscribed to the newsletter, and then she will say that she would offer her full support to both the Red Rallies and to Communism.

Then she'll wait for KomDiv Aleski to come back, and asks Casper to continue watching the cartoons and telling her all about it.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 313):

Comrade Jones is completely invested in his phone. He doesn't notice anything. Casper tells Aiko all about the cartoons which involve a cat and a mouse fighting a dog who has a chainsaw for hands.

The final page of the packet is a certificate of membership. It is a red sheet of paper, adorned with roaring bears, hammers, and sickles. In the center is an emblem of a group of flags hovering over an outline of New Babel City. It reads . . .

"This certificate certifies _________ as a fully approved member of the Red Rally."

You can see Recruit Amanda filling her name out on the certificate.

Comrade Jones is not paying any attention to anything except his phone. But from the other side of the door leading into the next room, Aiko can hear the sounds of foots steps and KomDiv Aleksi's muffled voice.

The City of New Babel #3: The Revolution Bears its Teeth!
In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 319):

As Aiko finishes tying the bands to her arms, the spirit bird ascends through the floor, seemingly invisible to everyone except Aiko and Casper. The bird perches on Aiko's shoulder and curls its tail around her arm. The barbed tail snakes up Aiko's shoulder and jabs into the nape of her neck. The single massive eye on the bird's shoulders begins to rotate as it drains its memories into Aiko's mind.

Aiko is suddenly swooping above the rows of cubicles in the office room above. Tired workers type at their desks, the sounds of keyboards and mumbling fills her ears. She flys through the ceiling and unto floors and floors of cubicle bound workers and managers caged in glass offices at the corners of the building. You fly out through the ceiling and into the open air. It is thick and heavy, tasting of smoke, but you only have a moment before you dive into the warehouse. It is packed full of crates and boxes, manufacturing materials, tools, vehicles, and other industrial supplies. You fall through the floor and into the basement where the smell of oil and gunpowder assaults your nose. You can hear the click of weapons as you appear in a tunnel underneath the warehouse basement. Rows of men and women dressed in heavy brown uniforms wearing patches on their shoulders of roaring bears seem to be ambling around, checking the plethora of weapons (pistols, grenades, and rifles kept in wooden creates with the words Warehouse 38 stamped across them) they have, and generally waiting for something. You fly through the tunnel, seeing upwards of two dozen uniformed men and women until you fly through a door and into another room. It is a small room with a few computers set up. Only a couple people are here, but the one who catches your eye is a large, massive man dressed in heavy furs and covered in red ribbons wrapped around his arms, legs, and chest. His face is thick and round, but leathery and scarred. He smiles at something on the computer before you fly through the door and into a massive underground bunker. Dozens of people are laughing and talking all at once, clinking mugs of beer. They all have various numbers of red ribbons tied around their arms. Then, Aiko turns up, soars through the ceiling and into her own eyes.

The spirit bird stops rotating its eye. It squawks, and Aiko is returned to her normal state.

KomDiv Alekski holds open the door, and Comrade Amanda is entering it. They both look back at Aiko, expecting her to follow.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 321):

Aiko enters onto a staircase and a massive room filled with fellow comrades, dancing, drinking, and talking. Music plays from loud speakers up above and a DJ dances on a small, make-shift stage at the end of the basement room. Several fold-out tables were set up with plastic chairs around them. Coolers were laid out with drinks, sandwiches, and snacks; people were picking from them freely. At the far end, behind the stage, you can just make out a pair of doors.

KomDiv Alekski leads you and Comrade Amanda to a table where a bunch of other people are sitting. Most of them are wearing single red bands, but a few of them have two red bands. KomDiv sits you both in front of a skinny looking man with an amiable smile. He appears to be sweating profusely and playing with the two red bands on his arms.

"KomBat Bob, these are your new charges, Comrades Amanda and Aiko. Comrades, this is your KomBat. He will be your leader and answer your questions during our rally. Make sure you listen to him and stay with him during the protest. I must gonow, my place is torecruit new comrades for the Rally. Good bye," KomDiv Alekski nods to you and leaves.

"Well hello. My name is KomBat Qui, uh, Bob. Hello. What questions do you have for me," He asks as he loosens his collar and smiles weakly, "Oh, wait, we can get food and stuff, uh, sodas, and, uh, snacks. Chips! Help yourself,"

Amanda grabs some stuff and takes a seat. She pulls out a seat for you and offers you a bag of chips and a soda can.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 323):

"No, no, I'm not scared. I am a brave communist man who likes the color red, and I will be your leader during this attack. But, can I ask why you two joined? This seems a little dangerous for you girls, maybe you should go home," KomBat Bob says with a warm smile. Every now and then he turns around and glances at the stage, moving his head as if he was looking for something.

The DJ pumps his fist in the air as he plays quotes from the Communist Manifesto to a dubstep beat. A group of comrades are getting rowdy around the stage, jumping and dancing around, spilling sodas and chips across the floor. Others are leaned over their tables, talking and chatting about all sorts of things. One boy seems to mimic KomBat Bob's actions, peering over towards the stage, then to Bob, then back to his drink and the people around him. As he glances at Bob, the boy also takes a moment to pass his eyes over Aiko and Amanda. From what Aiko can catch, they seemed cold and emotionless against his sallow skin. The boy, about Aiko's age or older, rejoins the conversation at his table, but after a few minutes he turns back to the stage again, and continues this through the conversation.

Comrade Amanda just shrugs at KomBat Bob's question and sips her soda.

Casper looks the guy over before he whispers back, "He is kind of shaking a bit, and he keeps tapping his foot, and he keeps looking over at stage for some reasons, but I like his ideas. Let's go home now, so we don't get hurt, please."

Out of the spirit world, answering Aiko's call, is a small floating wisp. It hovers around her shoulder like a mote of dust. No discernible features cover its face. It does not talk or give any indication of sentience, but it waits patiently, never directly in Aiko's line of sight. It hugs her peripheral vision, almost as if it cannot enter her direct field of view.

IBird looks over the new spirit and flaps its wings, causing a strange draft to whisk over the table and scatter a few napkins and empty chip packets onto the floor. KomBat Bob bends over, picking up the litter and throwing it in the trashbag at the end of the table.

IBird and Wisp disappear through the floorboards into the basement below.

Casper disappears as he searches the room for information.

KomBat Bob continues speaking, "You know, if you girls want to leave before this whole thing starts, you are free to. Don't feel pressured to stay or anything. Protests can be dangerous after all, and we can never be sure what the police or security guards might do, but you have to remember not to react. If we do anything it will break the non-violent protest," He finishes and glances back at the stage, waiting for something to happen.

The strange boy continues to survey the room and wait for something to come to the stage.

All around the room, people are talking, dancing, eating, and playing with their phones. The phone Aiko beeps and buzzes with alerts and news stories about a Communist protest in the works. A large number of people have suddenly switched their profile picture to one with a red overlay. Over in one corner of the room, Aiko can see people taking pictures next to a red flag adorned with an outline of New Babel with a hammer and sickle above it.

But, the picture, well they definitely encourage you to show your communist pride, but you don't have to if you don't want. I think we're all supposed to switch our profile pictures about now actually," Bob pulls out his phone.

Just as he does, a person steps onto the stage and announces, "Hello everyone, we're almost ready to begin the protest. We're going to have a speech from our leader and chief organizer, Comrade Kodiak, and then will begin. We'd like to remind everyone to switch over your profile pictures and post about the Red Rally now, if you haven't already done so. We'd also like to give a special thank you to Comrades Jim, Kenji, and Sarah for providing us with these wonderful refreshments. Thank you," the announcer finishes and steps off the stage.

The music dies down as the DJ prepares a microphone. Everyone clears the dance floor and returns to their seats, except Comrade Amanda who hurries over to take a selfie with the flag.  Bob holds his phone out towards the stage, taking video of the area.

Over in a corner, Aiko can see Casper. He is hiding along the ceiling and seems to be listening in on a few conversations below him.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 329):

As you connect with the wisp's mind you catch a glimpse of the tunnel you saw before, boxes piled against the wall and lights flickering overhead, but before Aiko can see anything more she feels a sudden heat and a flash of light brakes her from the wisp's mind. It feels like it has gone from this world. Connecting with IBird confirms this as the wisp is no longer in sight. IBird sees the tunnel, looking through the dark, and it has been destroyed. All of the boxes are in pieces and the walls are black with soot. A rush of footsteps and flashlight rays fills the tunnel as IBird watches on.

Back in the room, a large man dressed in a massive bear fur has taken the stage. He smiles at everyone and shouts through the microphone, "Hello comrades! We will now begin the protest! If anyone has any questions ask them now before I start giving orders!"

You can see Bob has taken out his phone, like many others, and begun recording the man on the stage.
