The City of New Babel #3: The Revolution Bears its Teeth!
In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 205):

The door immediately opens. Frank stands in the doorway. He has a black eye and cut across his face, but he smiles anyway.

Inside the room has been trashed. Lamps and books have been thrown over the floor. The desk has been flipped, and so have the chairs. There are cracks in the window where something had hit it.

"Aiko, Aiko, I learned how to do a back flip in Frank's body, watch." Frank says.

He stands in the center of the room, which he has cleared of debris, and bends over. Both of his hands lay flat on the ground. Frank heaves himself up and for a second preforms a handstand. A second later he falls on his face, rolls across the ground, and slams in wall creating a familiar Thump!

"Ow," Frank says, before smiling up at Aiko, "It was good right?"

In reply to The Narrator (msg # 206):

"Wow, Frank!" Aiko shouts. "That's amazing! But maybe you should have done it, I don't know, in a safe area. I mean, if you just told Ms. Sakura you wanted to learn to do a handstand, she would have taken you to the gym, and gotten mats out. I mean the gym is a mess, but we have an aux gym." She leans in and lowers her voice, hoping no one else hears her. "Besides, Casper, you can't just beat up Frank's body, otherwise you might kill him, which doesn't seem too big a deal for you but like, killing him isn't cool you know."

Then she leans out and looks around and shrugs. "Think we can find Ruckus?"

"I was luring Frank to the gym for that reason, but then she came and started talking to him about memory-blackouts and keeping a journal, or something. But, yeah, we can go find Ruckus. That sounds like fun. I can show him my handstand," Casper says through Frank's mouth. A trickle of blood flows down Frank's forehead.

Casper ignores it and leaves the guidance office, entering the room that leads to the hallway. He holds the door to the hallway open for Aiko. All of the staff are staring. They say nothing.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 209):

You walk towards the library but find something strange. It is entirely quiet.

The hallway all along the library is lined with windows looking in. A few of the windows have been stolen and boarded up with wood, but they are mostly all there. The posters encouraging reading have all been written over and gratified by various students throughout the years. The double doors are bright orange and stand before you, slightly bent.

Frank (Casper) hangs behind you.

A harsh voice like the dragging of stones across pavement answers you from behind the double doors, "You're looking for Ruckus, dear? And who would you be?"

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 213):

Aiko has heard many rumors about Mrs. Slugworth. Most of all, she has heard of the crabby librarians "gang" of Lil' Librarians. Rumors say they are blackmailed, forced to protect the books by Mrs. Slugworth and led by some of the most studious, and insidious, students in the school who heard them like zombies. Mrs. Slugworth has a reputation for being spiteful and cruel. You have heard more than a few stories of students held back for years by a sudden unpaid library due for a missing book; said book is always found the following year. There are even rumors of a student who has been under her thumb for nearly 6 years. When asked about it, he can only shake his head. Ruckus once said a demon possessed her dead body and forced the boy to cut his tongue out. Mrs. Slugworth is known to refuse students access to books, and hide study material and crucial textbooks to keep the kids from ruining them. Some also say that underneath her wig is a usb port connecting to her brain where she keeps the flash drive with all the dirty sexts and emails students send to each other so she can black mail them into servitude. Maybe she does this to the teacher too. She hasn't been fired after all.

"I have seen him. He's in here, actually. In one of the back rooms. Why don't you come in, and  get him. He's been far too much trouble, already," Mrs. Slugworth says in her husky voice.

There is a soft whispering and a moment later the sound of heavy bookcases being dragged across the tile floor. The double doors peek open and a kid looks out. She has coal black skin and curly hair. Massive glasses are tied with colored rope around her head.

"Who wanna come in and get him? He's ruining all the books," The girl says angrily.

Aiko looks at the girl as blankly as she can. "That's me. I'll come get him. You know if you let him look at the books properly he'd take exceptionally good care of the, he has his own library at home that's very well kept. Better than I keep books but I guess I'm not much of a reader."

While walking up to the double doors, Aiko will try to use her frosty aura to inconspicuously ruin some of the close by books. She'll also ask Casper if he has any abilities to make books fly of the shelf for fun while still staying in Frank's body. And to conclude it all, just to make sure she is able to get Ruckus out of Librarian prison, she'll summon a spirit like she did in the gym. This could be considered an act of heroism after all, and she wants a spirit that can help her retrieve Ruckus without being seen by everyone and without raising suspicion to Aiko's abilities. She's hoping for Wood Cat to be honest.

"Hey Ruckus!" She shouts, "Yo I'm coming to get you, let's head back to my house, or actually, we could get to Wawa's game, cheer her on. You can even bring one of your whack books about demon summoning or something."

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 215):

The girl opens the door, and Aiko sends out a small wave of ice. The girls shivers and hugs herself, but there are no actual books within range of the wave.

(Aiko rolled a 5 on her icy aura)

Casper tries something similar, trying to lash out around him. Instead of using his ghostly form however, he just flails a little with Frank's body. His wrist bangs into the door knob. It leaves a nasty bruise, but Casper is unaffected; Frank will feel it in the morning.

(Casper rolled a 3 to attack some books)

When Aiko enters she walks through a corridor made of empty bookshelves. Standing on top of them are a gang of about five kids. Four of them look rough, dressed in reflective, green jackets that are marked with spray paint symbols. One of them looks similar to the girl who answered the door. His hair is slicked back. His face is covered in pimples, and he wears a suit. The girl is in a plaid skirt and dress shirt. She shuts the door behind Aiko. Two of the gang kids push a set of bookcases against the door. Their wooden legs screech on the tile floor.

At the end of the corridor is Mrs. Slugworth herself, a bulbous, fat figure on stumpy legs in a blank skirt and sweater with a whispy tuft of hair on her head. Her face is wrinkled and ugly, but she smiles at Aiko.

Her voice is raspy, and she smells of smoke, "Let's go find him, Aiko. Come on, he's in the back. You here that Ruckus!? Aiko is with me. She came looking for you. She brought another friend too. Library is closed young man, it's time to get the hell out!"

She shouts in the maze of bookcases. The lights in the library are dim and barely working. Clouds of dust drift between the shelves, obscuring sight beyond a few feet. Figures seem to move in the dust, lost souls, lamenting over lost books and library fees. Everything is overwhelmed with the smell of dust and old paper, but there is no sound except Mrs. Slugworth's own voice echoing throughout the shelves like a banshee shriek.

Mrs. Slugworth takes up a flashlight hanging from her lanyard and flicks it on. The cone of light barely penetrates the rolling dust clouds. It illuminates the shelves, showing the spines of a few books that have never been touched by children's hands.

"Come on, Henrietta, were going in. Bring Butch and Cassy. Eugene! Watch the doors. He doesn't leave until he checks that book," Mrs. Slugworth says.

The girl who let Aiko in snaps her fingers and pulls out her flashlight. She checks her skirt for something before falling in behind Mrs. Slugworth. Two of the kids, a tall guy with a bushy beard who looks to be in his twenties and constantly stares at his twiddling fingers, and a girl with a shaved head, chewing on a wad bubble gum with a no-care attitude, hop off the shelf and follow Henrietta to Mrs. Slugworth's side. Neither seem particularly excited to go in. Henrietta on the other hand, seems giddy, jumping up and down as a grin covers her face. She plucks a bicycle helmet off the ground and straps it on. One hand holds the flashlight, the other grips something tucked into her skirt.

"After you dear," Mrs. Slugworth waves Aiko onward, "Just walk straight and keep going."

Seeing this, Aiko calls for Wood Cat as Mrs. Slugworth's smile grows in size, showing rows of yellowy teeth. Immediately filling Aiko's mind is an image of a meatball with Mrs. Slugworth's face on it. Wood Cat is here, but invisible, even to Aiko though she can absolutely feel his presence; it is brimming with anticipation.

(Aiko rolled a 13 to summon Wood Cat)

Aiko looks at the librarian. "Oh, I don't need you, just Frank. He can do back flips you know, I think that's a bit more useful in this situation than you."

She also asks Wood Cat to destroy the library except for anything that Ruckus might like, which is anything on the occult, she also asks Wood Cat to find Ruckus and bring him to her safely. She also smiles at Wood Cat devilishly to give Wood Cat the A-okay on destroying the library.

She'll also ask Wood Cat to save anything that could be incriminating to the librarian, in order to kick her out of the school.

Anything that could ruin the librarian's life at the school she'll want him to do, as long as it doesn't harm her, Frank, or Ruckus, or kill anyone or maim anyone indefinitely. She tells that to Wood Cat.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 217):

Before anyone can speak, Aiko gets a flash of rain and falling dominoes.

Suddenly, the shelves of the library begin to tip with a loud groan that echoes off the walls.  One by one, they slam into each other as they begin to fall like the dominoes in Aiko's mind. Books go flying through the dust storms. Everyone breathes in sharply. Mrs. Slugworth's eyes go mad! The shelves tip and turn. One of them gets stuck, caught underneath another shelf. It bends like a wicker rod, pressure building, until it snaps. Half of the shelf flies through the air and explodes on the opposite side. Pages float down from the dust filled sky like snowflakes in a storm. They slowly settle upon the ruins of the library. Overturned shelves transform the carpeted floor into a rocky, craggy realm of splinters and nails where uneasy piles of books go landsliding over the desks and library carts, burying them under encyclopedias, dictionaries, and textbooks.

Mrs. Slugworth could only shake with fury and despair. Her mouth falls agape. Her two helpers began to cry, tears roiling over their cheeks as they surveyed the carnage. They sniffle and snort and stain the sleeves of their well-pressed clothes. The delinquent crew of the Lil' Librarians try to stifle their laughter, but eventually three of them burst into cackles and hollers of "damn!" and "sick!" Only the large, older kid seems to stay quiet, staring blankly at the scene.

But that was not all. Like the tears that fell from the eyes of the Lil' Librarian Leaders came the tears of the school. Water poured out of the ceiling, fired out of the building's sprinkler system. In the blink of an eye the the flaky, white snowscape become an inky, thick quagmire. Paper began to melt and turn to sludge. Ink pooled like puddles on the floor. Everything was covered in soaping wet books and stained with the black ichor of knowledge.

Aiko gets an image of people splashing in the rain. She can see Wood Cat beside her, splashing in a puddle, getting ink on Mrs. Slugworth's dress.

(Wood Cat rolled a 12 to pull off his prank)

But something moves in the wreckage, shrugging off paper and books. It stands up and looks over at Aiko. It's Ruckus. He seems to be clinging to something in his jacket. He looks terrified and covered in ink and wet paper. Without thinking, he bolts towards the nearest window, hoping to jump through the get into the hallway where he will escape to the safety of the outside world.

(Ruckus will get to the window in 2 turns)

"Get him now!" Mrs. Slugworth screams with all her might, "Bar the doors! Don't let him out!"

None of the delinquent kids move, except for the older one. He springs into action, bolting over the fallen shelves towards Ruckus. Instead of waiting for the others, the two Leaders of the Lil' Librarians try to push the heavy shelves back against the door. The other kids cheer Ruckus on as the sprinklers continue to rain.

(The Older Kid will reach Ruckus next turn, but it will take them 3 turns to bar the door)

Aiko thanks Wood Cat mentally, but decides it's not time to celebrate yet. Instantly she asks Wood Cat to protect Ruckus from the older kid. She'll also ask Casper to stop the lil' librarians from barring up the door.

"Ruckus! Wherever you are let's meet up in our special hide-away!" She says hoping he understands what she means.

She'll also use her icy aura again, trying specifically to slow down the person going after Ruckus and the two kids barring the door. She'll also continue to put the blame on Ruckus' dealings in the occult rather than on her own abilities.

"Ruckus, by the way, I don't know what you did, but whatever ritual you did must have really worked this time!" She'll shout.

And then she'll try to persuade Mrs. Slugworth to just let them go with Ruckus and leave the library peacefully, she'll try act innocent though, and pretend that she had no idea what happened to the books other than it being part of Ruckus' occult dealings.

The older kid chasing Ruckus suddenly trips. He rolls down a set of books and slams into a shelf. There is a sickening crack. The kid begins to yell.

(Wood Cat rolled a 7 to protect Ruckus)

Casper, in Frank's body, runs to the door. He stands in front of the heavy shelf and opens the door. He quickly shoves a book against the leg of the shelf, preventing it from moving. Then Casper leans out and smiles, saying "Sorry guys, just want to get out first before you catch him. Seems it's stuck, oh well,"

The kids keep pushing, but make no headway.

(Casper rolled an 11 to hold the door)

Aiko sends out a blast of icy wind that flies down upon the kid who was chasing Ruckus. His yells slowly subside into silence.

(Aiko rolled a 10 for her ice aura)

Mrs. Slugworth has fallen to her knees. She stares out across the library in silent disbelief. She doesn't respond to Aiko or anything around her. Aiko is free to leave and Casper, in Frank's body, is holding the door.

(Aiko rolled an 8 to persuade Mrs. Slugworth of her innocence)

Ruckus sprints for the window. The three gang kids cheer him on, and with nobody to stop him, Ruckus will absolutely make it free. If he heard Aiko, he doesn't show it.

(Ruckus rolled a 5 to hear Aiko)

Behind you, the three delinquents stroll out of the library, laughing their heads off. They turn down the hallway and head for the main exit. The library door slams shut, and after a while, you can hear something heavy slide against it. Then there is only silence.

All of the students have left the school now, except those three delinquents. The only people left roaming the halls are janitors and school staff.

Before Aiko can leave the school she is confronted by Ms. Sakura! She stands before the metal detectors leading to the main entrance of the school with her hands against her hips and feet planted shoulder length apart. Her hair is disheveled and her makeup seems to have been running down her face, but she has wiped most it away with her sleeves. Her sleeves still have the pink and black stains of her lipstick and mascara, and the knees of her stockings have torn. She is also missing her shoes.

The main office staff glance out of their windows. A few of them pull snacks from their desks and begin to eat. The office ladies watch with interest, but say nothing.

"Hello, Frank. It seems you have calmed down a bit more since seeing your friend, Aiko. Just like I thought you would. I am glad you took up my advice and found a friend to help you deal with your problems, but now that you're calm and not angry or yelling anymore, we should try to talk about some of those behavioral issues. So, if you could just step back into my office, and no more trying to flip over the table, please." Ms. Sakura says holding her hand out towards the ruined office.

All of the furniture, except two plastic chairs, has been removed. There are a few soggy paper towels left on the carpet by the smeared blood stains, and a chemical smell flows from the room.

All of the staff disappear. They hide behind computer screens, disguise themselves with potted ferns and  trashy romance novels, and fall into conversations belying their desire to snoop and peek. Still, from the corners of their eyes and the tips of their ears, they nose their way into the conflict happening in the hallway.

Ms. Sakura frowns. Her lip quivers, but she takes a deep breath and stands firm, "No, I think this is something we should discuss today, Frank. So, please, go to my office. The chairs aren't as uncomfortable as they look. I think."

"No. I don't think so. I'm just gonna leave. We can talk later. Tomorrow maybe, or, no, I want to use him tomorrow for eating chocolates. The day after though, for sure, Ms. Name-I-forgot," Frank (Casper) smiles.
