The City of New Babel #3: The Revolution Bears its Teeth!
In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 255):

The bus pulls in to the familiar bus stop outside of the forest. The smell of fresh air and pine trees wafts in through the open doors. Birds sing in the treetops. With the sun overhead, the forest looks inviting and peaceful.

Beside the bus stop, a hiking trail leads in to the forest. It is commonly used, and goes to the campsites. A little beyond that is the cave where Tutonok, the Spirit Bear, lives.

Only a few people get off at this stop. They are dressed in shorts and hiking boots and carrying large backpacks and sleeping bags on them. They hop off the bus and head up the trail, walking sticks striking the ground as they go. The two teenagers sit across from Aiko, waiting patiently for her to leave so they can finish gluing papers on the window. The bus driver checks his phone for the time, wondering if he is on schedule or behind.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 257):

After a nice walk through the woods you make it to the cave of the Spirit Bear. It is similar to when you left it except for a few bits of trampled grass and some new blooms on the bushes and trees. There are a few bits of trash, a banana peel, an apple core, and a biodegradable water bottle, but no signs of people currently around.

The area swells with spiritual energy. It is very familiar to Aiko because it is imbued with her own power. Inside the swell are fluctuations of Aiko's spirit energy merged with the original energy that sustained Tutonok. Aiko can tap into the energies easily if she wants.

Inside the cave is dark. The only thing coming out is the sound of water dripping from the ceiling.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 259):

The air in the cave begins to swirl around her as Aiko is transported into the spiritual plane of the world. The air grows thicker and thicker until it is clearly visible, flowing blue clouds rolling along the ground and ceiling of the cave. Little pools of water hover in the air like strings of flattened beads, dripping wet down to the cave floor. Outside a cool wind blows in stray shafts of sunshine and pine scent. A feint, inviting smell of blood, like a good meal, circles Aiko.

Just in front of her, bowing low in greeting, is Tutonok, the Spirit Bear. He looks strong and powerful, and stands regally before her.

"Hello again, and welcome back to my home," He says.

Aiko bows. "Hello Tutonok! I have a very important question about Casper before I have to head out again to this revolution meeting that might stir trouble. Recently Casper got stuck in Frank's body, as in, he wasn't able to leave. Do you know why that is?"

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 261):

"Hmmm," Tutonok ponders the questions. He rolls his great neck, shaking the shaggy brown fur. The blue air swirls around him and through his nose and mouth. It comes flowing out like smoke from a chimney as he speaks, "That is curious. I have heard of ghosts who have not yet learned the act of possession, but never any who have forgotten. Could it be he perhaps forgot how to perform a possession and got stuck? Otherwise, I have heard tale of braves so strong in spiritual energies that they could trap ghosts and spirits within them like prisons. The evil among them would even practice this dark art on souls of powerful warriors, chiefs, elders, and shamans such as yourself, but mostly it was used to seal away evil spirits until they begged to leave. Does this Frank possess powers to suppress Casper within him?"

Tutonok continues to think, scratching his head in thought as the mists swirl around the cave.

Tutonok nods gravely, "Then it may be as I feared. If Casper relies on your spiritual powers, he may be weaker so long as you sustain this realm here. Much of the residual spiritual energy is still abundant," Tutonok draws his paw through the ghostly fog, "so it should not weaken you significantly, but Casper may feels its effects before you do. You said you were going to some meeting? Does it have to do with the scepter?"

It's just that, according to this girl, Mary, the group is getting really rowdy lately. I'm afraid they'll end up causing a lot of damage to a lot of innocent people."

Let them give you no trouble, AikoIzumi now known SpiritCaller. And let none know your weakness," Tutonok rumbles as the mist quakes around him.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 267):

You return to the bus stop with no problems. The smell of pine trees and running water still clings to your clothes as you leave the natural world and rejoin the concrete suburbs of New Babel. The bus stop waits patiently by the road. The screen on its canopy reads one minute until the bus into New Babel arrives.

There are also two guys waiting at the bus stop, heavy backpacks laid on the floor. Sweat stains cover this armpits, chests, and backs. Hiking boots are swung over their shoulders as they tap the floor with their slippers. One of the men has a large red beard which he scratches often, and the other is completely bald, no hair, no beard, no mustache, not even eyebrows.

"The sidekicks coming out of the Superhero Association Academy are gearing up to be something great. I'm particularly looking at Corpse Kid and the Wily Tiger. I love her little costume with the tail, and when she spins, it's adorable, like a little striped tornado of terror," the bearded man says.

"Yeah, but you know where the real heroes are made? On the streets. Some of the Neighborhood sidekicks have been pulling in some headlines. Like the kid with the finger lasers, Digitize. Also I hear we got an alien in Solstice, but who knows," the bald guy says.

"I never understood why you like those Neighborhood Watch hero types. They just seem troublesome. No insurance, no guarantees. I just can't get behind that kind of vigilantism," the bearded guy says as he scratches his beard.

"It's about being independent. Avatar, Lady Justice, White Snake, they were all independents until they formed the Superhero Association, and even then it didn't become like a government thing until a few years ago. Maybe it's the conspiracy theorist in me, but I don't like my heroes being to tied up with government can-dos and can't-dos. It reminds me too much of a corporate hero," the bald man makes a face at them mention of "corporate heroes" and sticks out his tongue.

"Oh yeah, I can get that. I trust them to keep the Association clean though. They saved the city how many times? Gotta give 'em some credit," the bearded guy wags his finger as he speaks, "Also heard about a new one, Spirit Caller, they say she has an interesting power, saved a few people too. I think it was these woods actually."

"Yeah, I'm sure she'll get a call from one of those groups. Here's to hoping she don't go corporate. The day Tigerman signed on with Steelson's ripped my heart out," the bald guy pulls out two pouches of juice and hands one to his friend. They pokes holes into the pouches with their straws and drink.

A minute later the bus pulls up to the stop. The doors open to reveal a large, frizzy haired woman at the wheel. She hurries the two guys into the bus. They take the nearest seats in the otherwise empty bus and sit with a crinkle. All of the bus seats are plastered with posters and leaflets advertising the Red Rally happening soon in The Blocks.

The bus driver looks at Aiko, waiting for her to board the bus.

Aiko gets on and sits wherever an empty seat is. She won't bother trying to look out the window since it's most likely plastered on. She'll just wait for the bus to stop closest to the Red Rally.

Actually, that's something else she'll do too, she'll look for anyone who seems to be advocating for the Red Rally.

Aiko has the pick of the seats. Unfortunately, or perhaps thankfully, there is no one else on the bus except for the bus driver with the frizzy hair and the two men who got on with Aiko. The driver seems entirely focused on driving, and the two men are caught up in their conversation about superheroes. They seem to be ignoring the plethora of posters.

As the bus drives on your phone begins to ring. It appears to be the school calling according to the caller I.D.

"Oh, are you looking for an internship? I hear there are dozens of companies searching for aspiring workers in The Blocks. I think I have tons of files about that very subject in my office. You should come back and we can talk about it. Off the top of my head I remember Steelson's is searching for students interested in chemistry, engineering, and mechanics. And Ateck has openings for some office positions. Not very exciting, but good work experience . . ." Ms. Sakura continues to drone on about different companies and their internship opportunities.

The bus trundles on through the suburbs around New Babel until the quaint two story homes and grassy lawns transform into concrete lots and multi-story tenant buildings of Blockhouse. All of the buildings are the exact same, laid out like dominoes with exact precision along a perfect grid. The prefabricated blocks are separated by color and number. You pass a Yellow 43, Yellow 44, Yellow 45, on your way into the Green territory starting with then numbers 76 and 77. Nothing decorates the streets except painted markings and odd stains. There is no graffiti, no colorful shopfronts, just concrete slabs and color-coded numbers. Even the people are dressed the same, in the same grey jumpsuits with the only difference being a few colored tags assigning them a block. But something lurks under the tranquil seal of conformity, breaching the air-tight lid in the glares and flash of knife blades and gun barrels exchanged between gangs.

The bus continues on as normal, picking up passengers in normal-grey jumpsuits, teenagers and gangs with electrical tape bracelets and headbands spinning hammers and crowbars, schoolchildren in matching uniforms, and dropping them off along the route. The bus will pass by a junction to Wasabi Land. If Aiko wants to return, she should get off now, otherwise the bus will continue into The Blocks.
