In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 281):

Ms. Sakura finishes listing off all of the internships, "And that's all I can think of off the top of my head. It'll be easier when I have all the files in front of me. But, make sure you bring my phone back tomorrow. And we can talk about it more then. Thank you, bye,"

The bus rolls on past identical apartment blocks and grey jump suits with strips of color into The Blocks.

Much like Blockhouse, The Blocks are a set of near-identical buildings, but unlike the shops and apartments of Blockhouse, each of these buildings is a massive factory, pumping out fumes of black smoke and leading caravans of trucks and cargo trains through its stone slab structures like great steel arteries and veins. This is the hypertense heart of New Babel, bringing in resources from the Western lands of Asia and Europe as well as the Eastern twin Americas, and the Southern island nations of Indonesia, Polynesia, Melanesia , and Micronesia, and Oceania, assembling them with haste and pushing out finished products over night to be shipped and flown back to the world around New Babel.

The bus stops outside of a Steelson's Compound, the very same one Vlad talked about interning at. Across the street, however, are a few warehouses and offices where some shifty-looking gangs of people wearing red scarves seem to be hanging around. That area is the same location listed on the poster Aiko kept: the location of the so-called Red Rally.

Aiko steps off the bus and thanks the bus driver. Then she'll walk up to the rally and find someone who seems hearty enough to talk to her. She'll ask whoever she can what the red rally is all about and, and, among other things, what it is someone can do to help the cause (because she wants to see what their answers are).

((Also I've been thinking about a foil for Aiko and think it'd be a good idea for Frank to become Aiko's foil, the Ironman to Captain America, the Batman to Superman, the Bakugo to Midoriya))

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 283):

The bus rounds the corner as Aiko steps across the street.

Before Aiko are two large concrete buildings. On Aiko's left, the building's grey, featureless walls are dotted with evenly spaced windows, blinds drawn, restraining the blue light of florescent bulbs from leaking into the streets. Dingy white blinds and blue light are a sure sign of an office block. Inside are likely dozens of workers tapping away in front of their computer screens, red eyes sagging, cloistered into little cubbies and starved for excitement. To her right, the building is nothing but flat walls, roughly textured yet adorned with posters for all sorts of this. At the moment, it is covered in red spray paint and paper. A sign hangs above the sidewalk that states clearly, "Warehouse 18-48," in thick, bold letters. Between the two blocks is a small alleyway, dark and secluded, blocked off by a chain link fence. A gang of three guys dressed in steel grey military fatigues with red ribbons tied around their arms squat along the curbside by the fence. They talk quietly to each other, mouthing words as their lips deftly grip their e-cigs, the smell of alcohol in the smoke, but they keep their eyes on the bus stop. Their glassy stares follow anyone holding red pamphlets like wolves eyeing rabbits in the snow.

As Aiko approaches, they drop their eyes onto the curb, their steel-toed boots, the bottles of cheap vodka arranged in neat rows, anywhere but her face.

"Hello, citizen-girl, you are looking for Red Rally? Why you want do that? Little girl like you, maybe not get involved in that stuff. Might be too tough, for you," One of the men laughs, eliciting a chuckle from the other two. He wears three red ribbons along his arms; the other two on have one ribbon on either arms each.

Two other people have shown up, both holding red pamphlets as well. One is an older asian man with thick-rimmed glasses and a balding head, dressed in a suit. The other is a girl in a beanie and plaid shirt. They stand behind Aiko, looking anxious and worried.

Aiko tries to convince the man. She puts on her sternest look and looks the man with the three red ribbons on his arm in his eyes. "I grew up in Wasabiland!" She says loud and proud, "I can handle a punch, and if someone is planning on changing the government then I want in, I'm not going to be some dumb bystander! No way!"

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 285):

The man smiles and it pulls wrinkles down from the rolls of fat around his bald head into the corners of his mouth. He stands to his full height (average size for a guy) pulls out a small pen knife from his pocket. He twirls the knife between his fingers, flipping it like a miniature baton and rolling it like a coin across his knuckles. The display finishes with a flurry as the knife flips in the air and lands solidly in his palm, blade facing inward, handle facing towards Aiko.

"You talk very good, citizen, very good. I see fire in you. And Wasabiland, ah? Many of the best recruits come from Wasabiland. But you can't just speak big, you must walk big too," the man looks at the other two recruits, addressing them as well as Aiko when he says, "Changing government is like moving mountain, you must be willing to dig a little and get dirt on hands," He shows the palm of his free hand, black and smothered in some kid of grease, "Jerome, come prove your mettle to these citizens as we test them," The man motions for his ally to stand. One of them does, the other remains squatting.

A large, chubby man with dark skin in a poofy windbreaker that scrapes when he moves stands up from the curb, "Ah-yep boss," He waddles over towards Aiko and the boss and suddenly stamps his feet, claps his heels together and salutes. His windbreaker screeches and scratches with his sudden movement, "Equality, Utopia, Communism, yo," the man says.

The boss smiles as he pushes the handle of the pen knife towards Aiko, "Walk the walk," He says through his smile as he gestures towards the stomach.

The two recruits stare at the knife and then at Aiko and lastly at the man, Jerome, who is statue still in salute. The business man breaks out in a sweat that fogs his glasses while the girl grows a little paler and covers her mouth with her raven black hair. The man squatting by the curb takes a swig from one of the vodka bottles and smiles.

Grabs the knife and then turns to Jerome. "What? Mm'I supposed to stab you or somethin' like that? Ain't that hinderin' the cause?" She tries to say as coolly as possible.

She'll quickly go over the ideas in her head but, not really know what to do, she'll shrug and aim for Jerome's gut, hoping she won't cause any damage that will seriously injury Jerome, but is still convincing enough to freak out the people behind her to leave, and for her to be accepted into the rally.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 287):

-l=SLIT==>

You give a quick thrust into the man's gut. As soon as the blade disappears into his jacket he coughs. A trickle of blood flows down his lip. He lurches forward and grabs his abdomen. Red liquid spreads across his jacket. The man steps back, but his trembling knees fail and he topples onto his back, sputtering, hands covering the wound.

The guy still squatting by the curb, bursts into laughter, spraying vodka into the air. Everything here seems to stink of alcohol, alcohol and smoke.

"She really went in. I think I see his guts, KomDiv Aleksei?" The guy giggles as he splashes the fallen man with vodka.

"This is good. Wasabiland is a horrible place and that is why it breeds the hardest people. That is why they walk the best. I am proud to walk with such comrades," KomDiv Aleksei says before taking a long drag of his e-cig, "How are you comrade Jerome? Soft? Have you learned lesson?"

Jerome groans, "Yes, KomDiv, I get it. Don't be soft, I get it. Yo, I'm like, I'm really bleeding, KomDiv, sir, can I go?"

"Niet. You ask to leave. That is soft, comrade. You embarrass our recruits," KomDiv Aleksei smiles again, pulling all the skin taut over his bald head so that the light reflects off it like a helmet. He turns to Aiko and the two other recruits as the third man continues to splash vodka on Jerome, aiming for his wound, "Comrade Jerome refused to help us remove a spy within our ranks. She was trying to weaken us, make us look soft to the public. When Comrade Jerome refused to remove her from group, she showed public that we had weakness. That we were soft. Recruit Aiko, you have taken first step in walk. But to lead New Babel into bright, red future of Communism, you must not walk alone. No. Must walk with comrades. Must teach them to step with you. Hand knife to next recruit. Show them, Comrade Aiko, how to stab into soft stomach like someone from Wasabiland,"

The two "recruits" behind you both whimper. The man gulps audibly and adjusts his glasses with a hand that could pulverize a mountain it was shaking so fast. He locks his eyes on Aiko and begins to huff. The girl, no older than Aiko herself, can just stare. Not at Aiko, or the man before her in a grey uniform with three red ribbons tied around his arms, but at the hole and the blood pooling around it. For a moment it seems as if she's stopped breathing, but then she takes a sudden deep breath to prove she's still alive.

"Give it to the girl. Something about girls doing the stabbing makes me real happy," The guy on the curb says as he swigs the vodka.

"Do not speak, Comrade Miguel. It is Recruit Aiko's decision. She must choose alone who goes next," KomDiv Aleksei silences the man.

Jerome groans quietly and rolls around on the dirty concrete sidewalk.

Aiko flips the knife in her hand and stares at the two others. "With all due respect, sir, they don't seem cut out to fight. I also don't think it's weakness not to fight though." She'll kneel down by Jerome's side and place the knife in her pocket. Once she's knelt down, she'll place take out a piece of cloth or whatever from her bag and press it against Jerome's wound, applying pressure until he does so himself.

"I also think it's stupid to laugh at your comrades, and to get your comrades to fight against each other." Aiko gives Miguel a mean glare.

"I also think it's stupid to lay on the floor while your hurt, rather than getting up and going somewhere for help."

KomDiv Alekski smiles. He wags his finger in the air as he lectures, "Ah, the ones from Wasabiland are always tough, but they are not usually so smart. You could be a strong leader, but before you learn to lead the march you must learn to step in key. Many hard decisions must be made, and they cannot all be avoided. Sometimes you must break the bottle to get to the drink so to say, and when you do that, sometimes you get a few shards of glass in your drink," Alekski puts a hand into his jacket pocket and wraps his fist around something, "I give you another chance. Choose recruit to give knife to, or I choose next recruit."

You press down on Comrade Jerome's wound. No more blood comes out. He feels thick and cushion-like under your hands. Immediately after you touch him, Jerome shoves your hands away from him. He presses the cloth against his stomach, but keeps swatting away your hands.

Comrade Miguel smiles. The two recruits stand still, holding their red pamphlets in their hands.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 291):

The older man speaks up first. He wipes his brow with the poster and then begins dabbing it along his liverspotted neck very anxiously. As if going to an interview, he is dressed in a well-pressed, tie, and leather shoes. His brief case hangs loosely from his sweaty palms along with a little canvas bag holding when smells to be some kind of bento box lunch, still hot, homemade, his name written in red ink along the top in a woman's hand writing. You can see him gulp before he begins speaking.

"I am Ono Haru," he stutters and readjusts his glasses, "I came because I wanted to help bring equality to New Babel. I want to make sure nobody dies when we can save them again."

The girl continues to stare at the wound in Jerome's stomach. Her hands are adorned with plastic rings and cheap, costume store bracelets, and she plays with them relentlessly, scoring rings of red rashes along her wrists and fingers. Stylishly ripped jeans, torn at the knee, new leather boots that have been weathered to the perfect look, and her two inch gauges all match the color of her raven hair and blue, black plaid shirt. She pulls off her beanie, scratches her head, and begins to speak.

"I came because it sounded really cool," she notices Alekski's eyebrow raise and says, "It still sounds really cool, and, like, I'm from Mountain Side. My friends said you wouldn't let me join because I'm too young, but I want to. If that's okay, sir, commander, komdave,"

Komdiv Alekski looks them over with a cold stare. Then he turns to Aiko, waves his hands towards the two, and raises his chin, ordering her to choose.

Casper whispers into Aiko's ear, "I guess you could just choose someone, like get it over with quickly. Maybe if we hurry we can treat him quickly and save him. If we can leave, we could always try and come back in like a disguise. They can't kill someone for every test. Right? Or maybe we could sneak into their hideout. It's got to be in one of these buildings if they're using this alley. But, if we leave, this guy's a goner for sure. But, if we leave, we can go get tamales. I love tamales. We can even start a tamale revolution if you want to join one that much."

In reply to The Narrator (msg # 292):

Aiko rubs her cheeks and nods. "Good idea. Good idea." She says while looking at Casper. "Guess I'll just have to rush through a decision. I hope I choose the right thing to do."

She flips a coin and sighs. "If it lands heads, I lose, if it lands tails, you win." She says, sort of talking to Komdave but not exactly as she's still looking at Casper.

(The actual coin I flipped landed on tails which means Ono is spared)

Aiko turns to Ono Haru and looks him straight in the eyes. "Honored elder! Your desire for equality is duly noted, and respected beyond a doubt. However, as much as I love your desire for equality, I do not think you should bloody your hands. There are bound to be better ways for you to do this, Haru-Sama. That bento box is home made I imagine, probably made by your wife, you probably have children too. Maybe even grand children, they wouldn't want to see you get hurt, I don't want to see you get hurt either. It's not that you're frail, though, it's just that you have already fought wars in life, Haru-Sama, maybe not all of them physical but mental, most likely. You should rest, you should be with your family, you should be reflecting and writing, your influence as an honored elder can shake the seas, I presume so anyhow. However, if you would, please put your contact information in this phone, I would be most grateful, we could talk over ideologies, and even have dinner together. My parents are wonderful cooks and I'm sure they would love to meet you!" Aiko hands Ono Haru the phone gently and smiles at him as brightly as she can, staring up at him with stern but sweet eyes.

When Ono Haru has put in his information, which he will do because she will not let him leave without it, she'll take her phone back.

Then she looks over at blue haired girl. "Those gauges must have hurt when you got them. A lot of people in Wasabiland have them too, but none of them are as pretty as those. Well, I mean, all we have are rats and roaches, and mutants, and probably some aliens somewhere. Strange things lurk in Wasabiland, but we always hear stories about pretty women and men from Mountain Side. Mostly from the idiots who think they're going to score one of them." Aiko is talking as sweetly as she can while still being as firm as possible. She stares the girl in the eyes like she did with Ono Haru, and she carefully tries to remove the bracelets from her wrists. "Unfortunately, even the pretty have to get dirty when we're young. That's what my parents taught me. Fight a good fight though, fight for a good cause." She'll give the blue hair girl the knife from her pocket. "Don't stab Jerome, don't go for Ono Haru either, if anything, stab comrade Miguel. He's asking for it anyway." Aiko shrugs and changes her tone of voice. "Or don't. You could probably go back to Mountain Side too, you know, with your strange friends trying to cover up blemishes and getting changed while trying to impress boys with your body. Really though, why undo your trousers for a boy when you could just simply stab one? Like Miguel!" Aiko smiles, sort of crookedly, trying to play a part.

KomDiv Alekski points at Jerome, "Only stab Jerome, Recruit. That was my order. You must follow, or I will retaliate."

You see him shuffle the object in his pocket. Comrade Miguel bursts into laughter and begins to make stabbing motions at the two recruits.

Ono Haru looks very distressed and glances back at the bus stop, but there is no bus and nobody on the street to call for help.

The girl looks up at KomDiv Alekski, and then at Comrade Miguel, and finally at Comrade Jerome. She stares at the wound in his stomach and smiles. In a flash she jumps on Jerome's chest and begins plunging the knife into his stomach. No more blood spills onto his clothes, but he does make a series of guttural groans.

"Yes, thank you Comrade Aiko for the chance to prove myself worthy to the cause," the girl says, pulling the knife free from Jerome's body, "KomDiv Alekski, you can call me Recruit Amanda Bridge."

Comrade Miguel beats his chest and howls with fury. Ono Haru seeing this savage display, launches himself down the sidewalk and disappears around the corner. He throws Aiko's phone on the floor. It is not broken. It is scratches, quite badly, and the stain in the corner? That's ketchup. And the smell is rubbing alcohol. RUBBING.

KomDiv Alekski takes Recruit Amanda's wrist and lifts her up. He pulls the knife out of her hand and smiles. His smile grows in size until it stretches over his face like a mask.

Comrade Miguel can't stop laughing, but between his chortles and giggles he manages to say, "Did you see that? Ha ha. He took off so quickly. Oh, man, that's great. I love recruit duty, KomDiv."

"Yes. It is best time," KomDiv Alekski says, "Alright, Comrade Jerome, you can get up now."

Comrade Jerome starts to giggle and picks himself up off the floor.

"Yo, KomDiv, that was great. I love these girls, but damn that hurt. I could feel it even through the stab proof vest. I definitely think thy'll be good for the Rally," Comrade Jerome says.

KomDiv Alekski brushes Comrade Jerome down. He looks to Aiko and the other girl, Amanda, and begins to speak, "I understand you may think it harsh, but we must ensure our Recruits are of the greatest conviction. It is the recruits and comrades of the Red Ralley who keep it strong, unlike New Babel's Communist Party. They are weak, fractured and fighting among themselves for scraps and ideology. We are strong and united under ideology and leader. We fight for equality and each other. Jerome was not in danger with his vest, and the knife was blunt. The blood was fake and we covered the smell with alcohol. Comrade Miguel has been splashing it around so you did not notice no blood smell. It is good, no?"

"The best is, I don't even drink. I filled one of the bottles with water. Comrade Jerome and I went to an acting college on the first tier, but I just couldn't stop laughing," Comrade Miguel says as he walks towards the alley way.

"Nah, I really thought the laughing sold your character, yo," Comrade Jerome says. He pulls off his jacket, roughing up the sleeves as he struggles to pull it over the vest. Next he pulls off the stab proof vest and slides an empty blood pouch out. He walks over to Comrade Miguel and they continue to talk about the performance as they head towards a cellar door.

"Now I take you into hideout," KomDiv Alekski says, but before he can move Casper phases into his body. KomDiv Alekski is under Casper's control for now.

Recruit Amanda nods enthusiastically and follows the KomDiv down the alleyway towards a cellar door. Comrades Miguel and Jerome have both disappeared, presumably into that cellar door.

Aiko can feel something grab hold of her call for aid and pull itself into the living world. It is an avian spirit with long flowing feathers and obsidian talons that grip Aiko's shoulder. Instead of a head it has a single massive eyeball that constantly moves taking in the details of the buildings, the pavement, and the clothes everyone is wearing. Its tail, long, flexible, and tipped with an obsidian bard, wrap around Aiko's arm. The Spirit Bird looks at Aiko with its cyclopian eye and awaits for orders.

The bird nods its eye and sets soaring off through the buildings, using its ghostly form to fly through the walls as it investigates the area for potential danger.

As Aiko catches up to KomDiv Alekski and Recruit Amanda they are opening up the door to the basement under the office. A man dressed in a grey uniform with a red band on either arm answers the door. He leans in as KomDiv Alekski whispers something in his ear. They nod to each other and the man steps aside letting you, the KomdDiv, and Amanda inside.

You enter a small, grey room with a single table, a few scattered chairs, a red sheet draped along one wall adorned with a sickle and hammer, and a door on the other end just as three other people are leaving. One of them, like KomDiv Alekski, has three red ribbons on her arms. The other two, following her, have a single red ribbon each. One of them looks particularly pillowy. They all nod to Alekski as they climb the stairs into the alleyway and disappear from sight. From behind the door you can hear the sounds of many people talking, chatting, chanting, and generally making merry. Music can be heard faintly through the walls. The doorman locks the door leading to the alleyway and picks a seat where he puts his earbuds in and watches something on his phone.

KomDiv Alekski picks up a clipboard and a pen off the table and hands it to Amanda. He then pulls a crate out from underneath the table and pulls out two packets of paper. He holds them close to his breast while he addresses you two.

"Now you have entered Red Rally Base. This is only first room where we test new recruits. When you finish test you become full comrades and earn your ribbons," He pulls out two shinny, red ribbons from his pocket and waves them in front of you. Recruit Amanda's eyes sparkle, "First step in becoming comrade and joining march to lead New Babel into bright, red future of utopian equality is to sign name on registry. Put Last name, first name, e-mail, phone number, best time to contact, address, and if you want sign up for People’s Communist Party of New Babel (PCPoNB) Newsletter. Is pretty good newsletter, very informative. This month had article about importance of women's role in revolution, and fun cut-out Stalin mustache and eyebrows set."

Amanda quickly fills in her information and hands the clipboard and pen to Aiko.

KomDiv Alekski collects the forms and holds them under his arm. Next he pulls up two chairs and gestures Aiko and Amanda to sit. He places the two packets of paper on the table. The packets are labeled "Red Rally Recruit Entrance Test," and they appear to have about six pages each.

"Thank you for filling out forms, I will deposit them while you finish test. Now, this test is extremely difficult. Though you may have conviction to join Red Rally, you must have intelligence as well. When I tell you go, you will begin test. You will finish when I return in thirty minutes. While I am gone, Comrade Jones will watch you," The doorman lifts his head for a moment, waves his hand, and then returns to whatever he is watching on his phone.

"Are you both ready?" KomDiv Alekski asks as he hovers near the door into the next room.

The City of New Babel #3: The Revolution Bears its Teeth!
In reply to The Narrator (msg # 304):

Aiko shrugs and then prepares herself for the test. Asking Casper to make sure she can get all the answers correctly, asking Casper to help her cheat essentially.
