The City of New Babel #2: Hashtag Choice!
In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 55):
Aiko focuses her energies and searches through the afterlife for a spirit to aid her. The area around her grows noticeably colder. Frost begins to grow over the grass, and the cold curls the leaves off the plants. Aiko feels a familiar presence touch her. The frost melts as the temperature returns to normal.

Appearing in front of Aiko is Toby! The little blue dog's stumpy tail wags excitingly. His tongue lolls out of his mouth, and his ears sway back and forth when he flies in circles around Aiko's feet.

Toby sets out towards the first campsite, then hovers over towards the second campsite. He flies between the trees, glowing blue and ghostly in the dark. After his reconnaissance, he returns to Aiko, his tail tucked between his legs and head shaking side to side. In his mouth he carries the shredded remains of camping tents and a hiking shoe, still warm and smelly. Toby begins to thurst his head side to side, indicating the two directions each group of campers went as they ran away from what ever destroyed their tents. Toby drops the bits of canvas and the shoe at Aiko's feet. His ears perk up, and his head bolts to one side. Toby grabs Aiko's wrist and begin to pull her towards one of the directions he indicated.

(Spirit Caller rolls a 12 to summon a ghost)

Wawa and Ruckus keep walking. They did not notice Aiko waiting behind. They still didn't notice when they reached the campsite. Wawa took off her backpack and Ruckus set down his things. They continue to talking about bear attacks with Wawa assuring Ruckus that there weren't any bears on the island, and hadn't been for nearly a hundred years.

(Spirit Caller rolls an 8 to be discrete)

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 57):

Aiko follows Toby to the first campsite where she stops to search the area. Toby flies around in circles, clearly distressed. Akio can feel the pressure of baying hounds somewhere in the distance. It makes her heart beat quicker.

It didn't look like it from the foot path, but the campsite has been ravaged. The tents are torn in half. Everything, from food to clothes, has been scattered around the site. The dirt has been churned up by a sudden rush of boots. Claw marks mar the trees. Many of the plants have been crushed. A strange heat presides over the area. It makes Aiko's blood rush through her body.

Then she notices in the distance, where Tody is pointing, Aiko can hear screaming! It's coming from deeper in the forest. Toby howls. Aiko can feel the hunt.

But, then comes another scream. It is much more familiar. It's Ruckas! His scream bounces from tree to tree. Something roars in the forest, shaking the leaves from their branches.

(Roll 2d6 to determine how quickly Aiko runs)

In reply to The Narrator (msg # 58):

Quickly trying to figure out what to do, Aiko tells Toby to head straight for Ruckus to figure out whats going on, and if need be, to become the most dangerous hound he can become to protect Ruckus and Wawa. In what feels like an instant in the dark forest, Aiko changes from her normal clothes into her superhero outfit, the Spirit Caller. She turns back to make sure that Toby is heading to Ruckus to make sure she's okay, but she's unable to let the scream of the other person subside from her consciousness.

As soon as she's done changing and giving Toby his orders, she begins to dash forward to the first scream. In a heartbeat she calls for Casper, shouting his name at the top of her lungs, "Casper!" Screams through the woods.

As her blood streams into her body, she quivers, but shakes her fear off as she continues to run towards the scream, letting nothing deter her from being a hero.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 59):

Hoooooooooowwl

Toby bursts through the woods at the speed of the wind, transforming into a monstrous beast as he flies. Spirit Caller can feel something surge inside her as the baying of hounds crescendos. As Toby disappears, the feeling grows feint and fades. Spirit Caller capitalizes on it as fast as she can, breaking into a sprint.

Spirit Caller runs through the forest, dodging the trees with the deftness of a hunting hound. Her cape flutters behind her like a beating wing. Her heart beats in her ears, drowning out all other sounds. The forest seems quiet. But she feels a familiar sense as Casper descends from the tree tops. He glides beside her, passing through branch and bole to catch up.

Spirit Caller follows a trail of odd items to a small clearing; it's recently made. The trees have been torn out from the roots. Claw marks have raked up the ground. The moon is high overhead. It is icy blue and casts a cold light around the clearing. Casper notices something, and he points Spirit Caller towards something reflecting the moonlight half-hidden under an overturned bush.

The sounds of battle are far off in the woods. Howling rings off the trees. Something roars ferociously far off. Screams answer the bestial sounds. It all sounds feint. But right here, Spirit Caller can hear someone sobbing.

Something drips onto Spirit Caller's cheek from above.

Spirit Caller looks around the area, upon feeling the wet liquid drip onto her head she starts to look around for a monster of some kind that could have done that. Furthermore she begins to search for the source of the crying.

While Aiko looks for anything, she also gets Casper to do the same thing. While the two do this, she also steels herself, putting herself on the edge and readying herself for any danger that could spring out at her.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 61):

Spirit Caller puts on her most menacing face. All of her muscle clench as she adopts a combat stance, ready to pounce on anything that moves. She walks softly over the ground. Not even the leaves make a sound. She looks very intimidating and prepared.

(Spirit Caller rolls a 9 to prepare herself)

Spirit Caller scans the area, searching for clues or creatures. The abundance of claw marks indicate some kind of animal or beast. By the size of the trees pulled up and out of the ground like weeds, it was a big creature. But, what kind of creature could create clear liquids, Spirit Caller wondered as she wiped away the clear liquid from her cheek. It made her think of Toby's slathering jaws. Was it drool?

(Spirit Caller rolls a 5 to search the area)

As Spirit Caller searches the floor, Casper ascends into the trees where he though he could hear the crying. Casper phases through the tree branch and discovers a man, thin and haggard.

The man's plaid shirt is torn and hanging to his shoulder by a thread. Mud is slathered across his jeans as well as blood from his tears and scrapes. He is missing one boot. Twigs and leaves are stuck in his hair and beard. His hands are cut and scratched. His bare foot bleeds from were he had stepped on a sharp rock. He sobs uncontrollably, pulling his hair as his tear drops fall to the ground below.

(Casper rolls a 9 to search the area)

Casper flies down before the man can see him. He goes to Spirit Caller.

"Spirit Caller, I found someone. He doesn't look good though. He's up there. You can see him if you stand here. What should we do?"

In the distance, the sounds of battle are growing quieter.

In reply to The Narrator (msg # 62):

Spirit Caller nods to Casper and asks him to go on and scout ahead, to see if there is anything that needs her immediate attention. If there is such a situation, she would like Casper to call on her just as she called on him, and she'll go dashing to their aid. Before doing this, while she knows Casper is already in a more heroic state than usual, she decides to give him a small pep talk about being great, and the necessity of what they do (rolled a 3 oops).

Then she stands where Casper told her to, and she calls up to the man. "Hey, are you alright? Can you climb down, do you need a medic? It's the Spirit Caller, and I want to help!" She calls out, hoping to get the man to come down. "If you're hurt I can help, but if you don't want to come down, that's fine, I'll call the proper authorities to help you down, but I need to know what happened to protect others!"

Before finishing, she decides to check up on Toby, using her temporary spiritual bond to try and figure out if everything is alright with her spiritual pup friend.

She also begins to call for another spiritual friend to come to her aid, she's hoping for a nurse or medic to help, preferably one with a modern understanding of how to treat people, but at this point, with the state the man is in, she's really hoping for someone who can simply help her patch him up. "I'm going to get someone else that can help me help you too, don't worry! You can trust me." She says the last line with a lot of, knowing all too well what feeling terrified is like.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 63):

Casper nods as Spirit Caller tries to inspire him. He feels no different, but floats off to explore the area around them anyway.

(Spirit Caller rolls a 3 to inspire Casper)

Spirit Caller tries to reconnect with Toby. She gets vague feelings of anxiety and fear. Her pulse quickens. She can hear hounds baying in her ears again, but they are far, far away.

(Spirit Caller rolls a 5 to connect with Toby)

Casper wonders why he is helping Aiko. What does he really get out of this? How did it end up like this? He could have just stayed in Frank's body and finished watching that movie with Vlad, but he didn't. He came here. To help.

A glint of light cuts off his train of thought. Casper remembers the thing shinning under the bush. He goes to investigate and discovers a phone. He tries to pick it up, but something is holding onto it. It's a body! A woman with blonde hair, looking much like the Frightened Camper, in ripped clothes is clenching the phone.

Casper flies back to tell Spirit Caller about the body.

(Casper rolled a 10 to scout ahead)

The Frightened Camper listens to Spirit Caller.

"Hero," He manages to say through his sobs.

Slowly he releases his grip on the tree trunk. His head darts around, searching for any danger. Then he climbs down. The entire time, he has continued to sob and cry. He wraps his arms around himself and slinks along the ground towards Spirit Caller.

He gets out one more word before he is reduced to blubbering.

sob "Bear. Bear. Bear, bear, bear." sob

(Spirit Caller rolls a 9 to talk with the Frightened Camper)

As the Frightened Camper descends, Spirit Caller sends out a request for aid from the other side.

It is answered by Miss, an enormously tall woman wearing a white dress that cuts off at her knees. The woman towers over Spirit Caller; if Spirit Caller stood on her own shoulders she wouldn't have been able to look this woman in the eye. Miss is barefoot, but doesn't appear to touch the floor. She has white gloves over her delicate hands. Her soft skin glows golden in the night. Feathers grow in ruffles and locks from her scalp, flowing down to her ankles in two tails; their colors fade from rich, warm brown to pure white as they reach their end. Golden light spills from her eye sockets. Her colorless lips are as thin as twine, nose barely a button. She moves with an elfin grace unbeknownst to the living world, curtsying to Spirit Caller like snake bowing from the waist. Her small shoulder cape catches the breeze and flutters around her, singing a doleful song of birds until the wind lies down at her feet.

Miss stares at Spirit Caller, waiting for her orders.

(Spirit Caller rolls a 10 to summon a spirit)

Spirit Caller stares up in amazement and then nods. "Right, I need you to help fix this man up, he's been badly injured, and I'm afraid that if I try to do any medical stuff on my own, I'll simply make it worse. Can you help patch him up in any way? Anything would be helpful, and I'd appreciate it very much." She curtsies back to the tall nurse and thanks her.

When Spirit Caller realizes that Casper has come back, she thanks him a ton for the information, however, she decides she needs to check up on Toby, Wawa, and Ruckus first before going to retrieve the phone. She tells Miss to keep watch over the camper, make sure he heals up well, and to keep him talking, if he says anything else other than Bear Aiko would very much like to hear about it.

With that she goes dashing off to Ruckus.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 65):

Miss nods and bends over the Frightened Camper. He seems too lost in his distress to notice her, but as a golden light crosses his face he seems to relax. The soothing radiance begins to pulse steadily.

But Spirit Caller does not have time to watch. Calling Casper to her side, she bursts off through the forest. While running, she notes the abundance of claw and scorch marks on the tree bark.

She arrives at the campsite to see it in dismay. The ground is torn up. Ruckus' books are scattered around the logs and branches. Pages are caught up in the trees. Wawa's equipment has been busted and destroyed. The tents are shredded. Neither them, nor Toby, can be seen. Nothing but the chirping of crickets and the rustling of leaves can be heard. The blue moons rises overhead.

The pages and books seem to lead off in one direction. In the opposite direction are more claw marks and uprooted trees and bushes.

Spirit Caller tries to recall Toby, but nothing happens. He feels distant, the connection tenuous. All Spirit Caller gets are vague feelings of anger and anxiety, as well as an ache in her jaw. Something feels off about the mountain, restless and vindictive. The blue moon looms overhead. The forest is silent.

The paper trail leads Spirit Caller through the forest. Everything is still and silent. The shadows seem to creep along the floor and reach out to grab at Spirit Caller. Books are discarded and dropped on tree roots. Casper floats close by. He is agitated and scared. Especially because he can hear someone muttering in the bushes in the next clearing. The moonlight is especially bright here and the all the leaves are tinted blue.

Whatever is muttering, it hasn't noticed Spirit Caller yet. The bush is rustling ever so slightly, but in the unnatural silence it might as well be shaking like a thunderstorm.

"You! I thought you sounded like, never mind. Why, like, no offense, but where are the real heroes? You know, the top level ones, like the trinity, cause we really need one of them to handle this. My friends are missing. Aiko is missing, and Ruckus ran away. We need to call a hero."

We were attacked by this dog monster, and a bear, a bear attacked us. They started fighting, but it chased Ruckus, and the dog went after it. Where's Aiko? I want to see her. I'll call the police, I'll try."

She pulls out her phone and begins to dial the 911. Her face is gaunt and pale under the harsh light of her phone.

Aiko then looks at the different books and frowns, "Don't tell Ruckus but those books aren't real, they're fake and rip-offs. He has a real grimoire but he's been ignoring it, and that's good, because those spells involve selling your soul. And Aiko is safe, she fled the forest and called for help as well but the more calls the place gets the better. She's down at the edge, by the suburbs."

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 73):

Casper, still invisible, hovers off in search of Toby.

Spirit Caller reaches out to Toby, trying to reconnect with him. She does, but the connection is still feint. Once again a sense of anxiety and fear falls over her, but now there are also feelings of anger, and pride, and exhaustion. Her jaw especially begins to ache with a dull pain, as if it's been clenched for too long.

(Spirit Caller rolled a 7 to reconnect with Toby)

Next Spirit Caller searches for Miss, but this time the connection is almost impossible to find. It is like searching for oil in a pool of water, while blindfolded. Spirit Caller can only just feel Miss' presence, she is safe, but she cannot connect to the spirit beyond giving it power to manifest. Instead a wave of anger and wrath seems to radiate around her like heatwaves coming off the mountain.

(Spirit Caller rolled a 6 to reconnect with Miss)

Wawa brakes Spirit Caller out of the trance. She drops all the books and picks up her big stick. She shows Spirit Caller her phone; strange chants and ritual songs are being emitted from the phone's speakers.

"I can't call the police. Just these creepy guys droning on. What do we do, Spirit Caller? I don't want to die. I don't want to be alone."

Just then Casper come barreling through the trees. He is fully formed and visibly terrified. Wawa screams as she sees Casper fly towards her. She swings the stick, but it goes right through Casper. Whhiifff! Casper dosn't pay Wawa any attention and turns right to Spirit Caller.

"I found Toby, and the bear, and Ruckus, and . . . something else. They were dolls. The porcelain kind. Just sitting there--menacingly!"

(Casper rolled an 11 to search for Toby or the bear)

Wawa continues striking at Casper, swinging her big stick through him as she screams. Casper looks around nervously, but his eyes seemed drawn to the moon, which has grown even deeper in color. Behind her, Spirit Caller can still make out the flickering of firelight and the pulsing golden glow.

Casper chaffs his hands together as he hovers back and forth. He takes a few breathes before he continues on speaking.

"I saw Toby. He was biting the bear, they fighting. Maybe that's why your jaw aches? And I saw Ruckus. He was blue too. Not ghost blue, just like frostbite, hypothermia blue. And his clothes were all ripped, too. I can take you, but , uh, what do we do about the, uh, live-e girl-e?"

Wawa bites her cheek and rolls her eyes.

"Fine. I'll follow the ghost." Wawa says.

(Spirit Caller rolled an 8 to convince Wawa to go; Casper will return in 2 rounds)

Casper takes Wawa and they begin to trek through the forest, towards the golden glow. Every now and then, Wawa looks back at Spirit Caller with a raised eyebrow.

"We're going to be the best of friends, I can already tell. You like rom-com?" Casper says.

As they get about a dozen feet away from Spirit Caller, their voices disappear. She can still see them speaking, but Spirit Caller cannot hear a word they are saying. Everything is deathly silent again. Eventually, they disappear into the darkness.

Spirit Caller takes off, dashing through the soundless woods in the direction of Toby.

As she runs, Spirit Caller notices two porcelain dolls. The dolls are sat together on a stone cleared of moss and debris. One of the dolls holds its hands to its ears. It is smiling. The other one has its hands against its mouth. They wear Victorian dresses. The laps of the dolls are smothered in a strange glowing substance.

Spirit Caller passes by them quickly and arrives at the mouth of a cave. Their is a small clearing around the entrance. Bushes and trees provide cover around the boundary. A large tree has partially fallen over the cave entrance, it looks reasonably stable, but could be dislodged with enough force. The clearing itself is bare of any brush, just grass and dirt, much of which has been torn up and seems to be leaking red mist. Above the cave, the mountain rises steeply, almost to a sheer cliff. At the top of the rock wall is a little ledge just large enough to stand on. The wall seems sturdy, but has no natural handholds except for a few scrawny roots and dangling rocks.

Entering the cave is a giant ghostly bear. It's fur drifts and swirls like mist. Burning red scars mar the bear's hide. Strange symbols warp across its body, like cave paintings moving  through its fur. It tears at the ground with its claws, leaving gashes smoking with bloody spiritual energy.

Clinging to the bear's side, is Toby, reverted to his normal form! He has latched onto a fold of the bear's skin and hangs a few feet off the ground. He appears to be growling, but Spirit Caller cannot hear him. When Toby see Spirit Caller, his stubby tail begins to wag happily.

Ruckus is in the bears mouth. It seems to be dragging him by the arm into the cave, ignoring Toby entirely. Ruckus' skin has turned the same shade of blue as the moon overhead. His clothes are shredded and torn. He bleeds from a scrape on his wrists and a cut over his eye. He isn't breathing, but their do not appear to be any claw marks, despite the rips in his clothing.
