In reply to The Narrator (msg # 130):

Spirit Caller tries to escape the hug from Ruckus, and gives him a small one before quickly walking over to the carpet. "It's good to meet you too, Ruckus. I don't know who that lady was, but I want to catch her badly now. She's definitely up to no good."

She then addresses the carpet, "Hello, do you understand me? I'm sorry I hurt you, but I thought you were going to help that nasty woman escape." She looks at Miss and then at the carpet, "Miss, do you know how to heal carpets? Or is that just a job for a carpet-maker?"

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 131):

Miss looks at the carpet and rubs her chin, "Maybe, I can try."

Her hands glow with golden energy as she places them on the carpet's frosty wound. The ice melts away and the wound begins to stitch back together. It looks a little thinner than the rest of the carpet, but it seems fine.

As soon as the warm light fades, the carpet touches the patch Miss put on him. It feels its body is whole again. Then it leaps into the air, and flies into the sky, heading away from the city and towards the ocean.

"I guess I can heal carpets," Miss says as she watches it fly away.

The campers have all gathered round. They seem to be starring intently at Spirit Caller. Ruckus is behind Spirit Caller, with Wawa. He is speaking into his phone.

"And then, like, this big, ghost bear, charged out of the woods and attacked me. But, like, this dog, ghost dog, jumped out and turned into a demon. Oh, oh, behind me is Spirit Caller. She's New Babel's most mysterious new superhero, and she can kick Corpse Kid's butt any day of the week! Oh, and, like, then the bear attacked me and the dog attacked the bear . . ."

"Gee.. I hope the carpet isn't going back to Magicana Jane." She says as she rubs her chin. "Just in case, Casper, please follow that Carpet as far as you can! I trust in you!" Spirit Caller decides.

She then turns to Ruckus for a brief moment, "The bears name is Tutonok, Ruckus, he is this mountain's spiritual protector. He isn't exactly updated on the current status of the world though, he mistook the campers as old warriors called Braves. He's a good guy." Then she starts to think, and sits down on the ground. "Mr. Knight, Miss, what do you guys think we should do now? We don't have any leads, other than that Carpet now."

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 133):

Casper flies off in chase. He eventually returns and says, "It flew across the ocean. I think it's going to America, or beyond. It wasn't going back to the city though, that's for sure."

Ruckus holds the phone up to Spirit Caller as she corrects him. When Spirit Caller is finished, Ruckus turns the phone back to himself and says, "Like, right from the superhero's mouth. Sick! Spirit bear's name is Tutonok. #Tutonok. Let's get it trending!"

The Soldier drives his sword into ground, and he takes a seat.

Miss kneels down as well. All the campers follow her lead and take a seat beside or behind her. Miss taps her chin, before she smiles and says, "I think you should go home and take a well deserved rest. Everyone here must feel rather exhausted. I certainly do. But everyone did a very good job, so everyone deserves a rest."

Many of the campers echo her sentiments. A few prepare to leave, lead by the redheaded forest ranger without shoes.

In reply to The Narrator (msg # 134):

"Ya, I guess you're right Miss." She waves goodbye the already leaving campers and shouts, "good night! I'm sorry the night was ruined by an evil sorceress! Rest well!" She smiles. "Good job, Casper, I guess we'll have to figure out where that carpet, and where Jane, went some other way."

Spirit Caller then takes one final look at Miss and the Knight, memorizing their looks to draw and write about in her book of spirits later when she returns home. "Okay, Miss, and Knight, you guys were awesome, and I thank you for your help. You two can rest now, thanks again!" She waves the spirits off as she severs their current connection.

"Those people were cool, Casper. We should definitely try resummoning them some day."

Spirit Caller takes a final look around the area, seeing if she can find anything at the last minute before leaving that can help her figure out where Jane has escaped to.

Spirit Caller then looks around for Wawa and Ruckus, if they've already left with the other campers she'll be relieved and will easily be able to return with the rest of the campers as Aiko. If they're still around she'll want to escort them back to safety and then disappear, and then reappear somewhere and pretend to have been worried about when they would return.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 135):

Miss waves goodbye as she is enveloped by two great wings of light and disappears. The Soldier stands, sheaths his sword, and then bows his head to Spirit Caller before his armor cracks and crumbles into dust.

Most of the campers have left, following the forest ranger back to the campsites and the trail. Only Ruckus and Wawa are left.

Ruckus looks sheepishly at Spirit Caller.

"Excuse me, thank you for, like, saving me and all. That was sick, but we are still missing someone. My friend Aiko is gone. I didn't see her anywhere. Would you help us look for her? She's this little Asian girl. She thinks your sick, too."

Wawa puts a hand on Ruckus' shoulder. She smiles a little.

"I'm sure Spirit Caller will help us. She is a superhero after all, right? So, like, why don't we check over that way where all the other campers are going, and, like, Spirit Caller can check over that way, behind those trees, where nobody can see her, or something. Actually, like, I think I can hear Aiko now. She's calling us, Ruckus. This way."

Wawa begins to pull Ruckus towards the group of campers, but he won't leave until he hears what Spirit Caller has to say.

Wawa just facepalms.

Ruckus is about to go charging into the forest in search of Spirit Caller.

The group of campers are disappearing into the night. None of them are aware of Aiko's return (or that she was ever missing).

"Hmm. Alright, I guess," Ruckus stares off into the forest longingly, but follows Wawa and Aiko as they catch up with the rest of the campers and head out of the campground. He seems to be engrossed in his phone on the walk, but every so often looks up at Aiko and scowls.

As the group is leaving the forest, Wawa pulls back a little as Ruckus heads to the front to speak with the other teenagers about being ghosts.

Everyone steps off the beaten forest trail and onto the concrete of the sidewalk. Streetlamps line the empty road, saluting the return of the forlorn campers. On the other side of the street are rows of houses, the suburb, civilization. The city of New Babel towers over the island in the distance, glowing like a light display in the night. It is a wonder you can't see any lights through the thick branches of the forest. A lone bus stop hangs at the trail end with a bench and a glass canopy. A display screen shows the estimated arrival time of the next bus (10 minutes) and a map of the bus routes leading around the suburbs and into the city. The group head towards the bus stop, leaving behind a mountain of forest and stone for one of steel and concrete.

Still standing away from the group, Wawa looks at Aiko inquisitively. She crosses her arms and asks, "Aiko, are we, like, friends? Like, good friends, you know? I mean, we've known each other for a pretty good time, but I'm never sure if we're, like, tell each other deep secrets kind of friends, you know?"

But, like, if you don't want to tell me, that's cool too, you know. I don't really want to be a sidekick or anything. I think that's what Ruckus would want."

Wawa taps her finger on her chin thinking about Spirit Caller. She is standing next to the forest trail, behind the bus stop where everyone else is waiting for the bus to the city (8 minutes). When she stops talking she looks at Aiko expectantly.

I can keep a secret, so, like ,don't worry about that, or anything. But, maybe you wanna come up with a better alibi though, just in case you get caught out again."

Wawa's phone jingles and lights up. She checks it, then passes it to Aiko. On the phone are videos of Spirit Caller fighting Magicanna Jane. Their faces are obscured by masks, hats, and the night. The likes count is rising, and the comment section is filled with people cheering on Spirit Caller, theorizing about her abilities, and comparing her to other heroes in the city.

"Looks like Spirit Caller is trending again. That's pretty cool. If you keep up like this, you might, like, get an offer from the Superhero's Association to join their hero academy and become all official and shit. Like, that'd be sick," Wawa says before she checks the bus stop again (4 minutes).

As she finishes, Ruckus comes over. He is waving his phone in the air and smiling.

"Did you see how big Spirit Caller is trending, Wawa? At this rate she'll get a sponsorship in no time. I hope it's a big company, like Steelson's, who picks her up so she can get action figures made of her. Maybe even a TV show. That's gonna be so sick, right! Also are we going back to Aiko's house, now, or not, or I don't know?" Ruckus says.

Ruckus thinks for a moment, "Nah, anyone would take the chance to be a big star. You get all sorts of perks, like, action figures, posters, comic books, movies, TV shows, oh, and money too, like, that too, but really, action figures. She could have her own action figures. That is so sick! Oh, bus is here."

bing

A white bus and blue bus with a soaring eagle logo pulls up to the stop and flips open its doors. Immediately a horde of people charge out of the vehicle, cameras flashing and recording, reporters shouting into microphones, bloggers and hero enthusiasts talking into to their live streams broadcasting from their phones. All the campers waiting by the bus stop get trampled under the horde as it races towards the forest. A few stragglers stop the campers and begin asking questions and filming the "survivors" of the latest super incident.

!Who was! !What did! !See the other! !A menace to society! !Rising star!

The brave campers begin wading through the crowd onto the bus. Wawa leads the way as she drags Ruckus and Aiko through the crowd after the campers. They manage to get on the bus as the reporters and enthusiasts shout their questions. A few grab hold of the bus and shove their arms, holding phones and mics, through the windows.

"Excuse me, little girl," A strong jawed man in a business suit thrusts his microphone into Aiko's cheek, "What did you see? Was it the same hero who was at the scene of the data library fire in Tiny Tokyo? Considering her track record, do you think she's a promising young hero for New Babel, or another hobby hero who'll be gone (or dead) by next week?"

"Miss, miss, please answer my question," A razor thin woman with almond shape eyes and straight black hair squeezes her microphone into the window. She pushes her hand down on the man's face to get a better angle and asks, "Do you think anyone will be interested in sponsoring Spirit Caller? The Superhero Association seems apathetic towards her, and we haven't heard any interest from any Corporations or Hero Gangs. Do you think she's worth it?"

"Out of the way!" A teenage boy with greasy back hair hanging over one eye and wearing a shirt of White Snake (A most beloved, poster heroine for the Superhero Association, and one of the "Big Three" of New Babel) with a black skull sprayed over her face jumps on top of the reporters. He holds his phone towards Aiko, "Hey you, what was Magicana Jane like? Cool? I bet she was cool. She was awesome when she robbed that bank in Old Town and turned everyone into rabbits and shit, so tell me about how she handed that sideprick, wannabe Spirit Clobbered her ghosty butt, ha haha."

"No! Over here," A large woman with frizzy hair squeezes underneath everyone else and holds her phone up against the windowpane. She spits as she speaks, sprinkling it across the window, "Having seen the Spirit Caller in action, what would you say her breast size is? For the fan art."

The bus driver kicks the horde off the bus and pulls the doors shut as soon as all the campers are on board. He rearranges his hat and sits down in a huff. He begins to pull the bus out onto the road and towards the city.

Wawa is shoving hands back through the windows. She slams a few windows shut, crushing more than a couple fingers. <Crack> <Crunch> <Crackle> Ruckus is engrossed with his phone, sitting in a seat, ignoring all the people trying to question him.

The bus ride is uneventful and peaceful. It picks up only a few more passengers, but they come and go regularly. The campers leave one bus stop at a time until Aiko, Wawa, and Ruckus (and Casper) are the only ones left on the bus as it hurtles towards Wasabiland.

Wawa sits by a window seat and watches the buildings fly by. She picks up her phone and dials a number. Aiko can hear half of the conversation from her seat.

<Sup Vald, so, like, camping was a bust . . . Yeah, it got real sterile after we got attacked by a glowing bear . . . Thanks. We good though . . . Yeah, at Ruckus' house for more movies . . . Sure, I promise, no horror movies. But I ain't watching a romcom . . . Okay, musical is fine I guess . . . Sick, see you there> Beep!

She rings someone else and puts the phone to her ear.

<Hey Frank, it's me . . . It's Wawa . . . Wawa, like Wanda. From school . . . We hung out, like, a few hours ago . . . Whatever alright, we're hanging at Ruckus' place if you want to come for a movie, musical . . . You do know how to get there. You were there today . . . Come or don't . . . Yes, you do know who's going to be there . . . Goodbye, Frank. Bye bye!> Beep!

Wawa groans in frustration. Then she turns to Aiko and says, "Vlad's gonna be there. I'm not sure about Frank. He's, like, doing his thing where all of a sudden he doesn't know who I am, and he doesn't know where Ruckus' house is, and he can't remember what he's been doing for the past week. Ugh! Sometimes I wonder why we hang out with him."

Casper catches Aiko's eye with a glance as if he's asking for permission for something. His hands are clasped together and making a motion as if he's begging.

Ruckus spends the trip rotating between playing a game on his phone (Tigerman's Zoo of Villainy: a match-3 puzzle game where you play as the superhero Tigerman trying to recapture supervillains for your Zoo of Villainy) and checking the forums and live streams for news on Spirit Caller (She remains elusive, but many still question her legitimacy as a superhero and the certainty of her legacy). He appears to get especially upset whenever someone questions Spirit Caller's worthiness as a superhero, his typing increasing furiously. Other than these sudden triads, he rides out the travel time undisturbed, but open to conversation at any time.

The bus pulls down into Wasabiland, taking one of the oversized elevators down into the sinkhole. The air becomes visibly denser. The sounds of the city above grow dull. People walk around in rubber boots, girls dress in oversized plastic ponchos that cut short just below the waist, and boys stare at them through their loose-fitting goggles as they brush off the moisture from their reflective green jackets. A strange, but not overly unpleasant, odor wafts through the windows, like the smell of hotdog water, cleaning supplies, and wasabi. Home is only a few blocks away, what does Aiko do to pass the time?

She starts digging through her bags, trying to avoid the revealing the blue gem she had kept with her for the duration of the trip from being seen, and getting out her trusty spray can. "Well, while we're headed for Ruckus' you want to mess things up and get in trouble with the law?"

Casper smiles wide. He pistons his arms giddily and flies out through the roof of the bus.

Ruckus' eyes light up when he sees the spray cans in Aiko's bag. He turns off his phone and nods his head.

"Sick, I brought my sprays too," he pulls out a spray can of orange paint and another one of green from his bag, "I was gonna tag a wall on the way back. Someone wrote some weird stuff, like, a full paragraph, and put up some old guy's face. It's the wall behind the Cornermart. I know exactly what I wanna put up there instead," Ruckus says as he shakes his spray can deviously.

Wawa rolls her eyes, and smirks.

The bus screeches to a stop and the doors flip open. Ruckus leads the way through the backstreets and over to the Cornermart near his building. He ducks behind it into an alley where the backdoor of the Cornermart lets out.

An old man in a beaten up hazmat suit lounges on a cardboard mat beside a dumpster. His ginger afro is covered with bits of trash, but he seems tranquil. He munches down on a few sandwiches given to him by the store cashier. The cashier sits on the steps of the backdoor, taking a drag from her e-cigarette. The mint smoke mixes with the smell of trash and paint. A strange glowing liquid drips into the gutters and a few rats skitter along the drainpipes.

"This is the wall. See, what a sterile tag, right?" Ruckus pulls out his spray paints and begins to doodle.

The wall is a covered with the face of Karl Marx shaded in brown and highlighted in orange. He is stern and solemn looking, disgusted perhaps at being put on the back of a Cornermart. Snarling bears emerge from the edges of his beard. They claw at towers and buildings that have the brands of several corporations and the symbols of many superheros painted on them. Among the corporations is Steelson's and Cornermart's logos. Among the superheros symbols are those of White Snake (a coiled white snake), Lady Justice (a balanced scale sitting on a sword), Avatar (a large, black 'A' with a yellow light in the center), and Tigerman (a roaring tiger face). The buildings corresponding to White Snake, Lady Justice, and Avatar are particularly ruined. Above each of them stands a bear wearing an ushanka and snapping off the chains around its wrists. Across Karl Marx's forehead is the paragraph Let the ruling classes tremble at a communist revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Workingmen of all countries, unite! #Communism #RevolutionNewBabel #ComradeCodiak #KillCorporate #ThreeSuperGraves #PCPoNB

Ruckus quickly gets to work, spreading his doodle over the left side of Karl's face, covering everything in neon orange and green. The homeless man and the cashier lady watch him work. They are mildly interested, but silent, eating and smoking respectively. Ruckus leaves the right side of Karl's face to Aiko's imagination.

Wawa hangs back, leaning against the wall. Her lips are pursed and she shakes her head as she watches Ruckus tag the wall. She pays more attention to her phone than anything else.

Before starting up her own spray, Aiko takes a photo of the paragraph and as much of the picture as she can, worried that someone may be attempting to actually try and topple the superhero buildings and the lives of many people.

Not wanting to ruin Ruckus' fun though, she throws her paint can in the air and catches it after it flips around a few times, and gets to work. She paints the large knight and Miss that she summoned, knowing what they looked like since she most likely drew them on the bus in her book of spirits. She spray paints them in perfect detail.

Then after painting those two, she begins to pain Tutonok at their side, doing his dance that they did together. On tutonok's side Aiko paints Spirit Caller and Casper. So all in all, the picture is painted almost fully in purple, with Miss and the Knight towering over in the back, Tutonok dancing in the front, Spirit caller leaning on Tutonok, and Casper floating beside them with a smile.

With one last glance at the picture, she stares at Wawa and Ruckus, remembering how she felt when she though they were hurt in the camping sight. She takes out her brightest purple can and thinks about what to write. Unable to figure out what she wants to write though, she turns to Wawa and Ruckus, "Hey guys. This isn't finished yet. It needs to say something. What should it be?"

Ruckus looks over at Aiko's spray and his jaw drops.

"Aw man, you did the same thing I did!" Ruckus folds his arms, sleeves covered in paint, and smirks, "but, like, I did it better, I think."

Ruckus steps back from his side of the wall and reveals his painting of Spirit Caller. It is a full body piece of Spirit Caller, looking a lot like a body builder with buldging muscles, massive biceps, and six pack abs, holding the city of New Babel over her head. Halloween ghosts and several horror movie monsters fly around her raised arms. They battle against several infamous supervillains, (including Mr. Roboto and Magicana Jane) keeping them from reaching the city. At Spirit Caller's feet are several fallen superheros, raising up their arms towards Spirit Caller as if begging for help. The drawing is conceptually good, but Ruckus isn't a great artist; his passion shines through though. He has tagged the spray #SpiritCaller #Horrorheroes #Wasabiland.

Ruckus take a picture of his masterpiece and begins uploading it all over the internet. Wawa actually does the same, using the same hashtags to spread the photo. It seems to be catching on.

"Has she ever said anything? Like a catchphrase or quote, like when White Snake says 'We are each a muscle, and to move anywhere we must move together' or some zen shit like that? That would be sick," Wawa says as she looks at Aiko's work, "or maybe, like, 'this painting is better than that one' and have an arrow pointed at Ruckus," She smirks.

"Man, like, my spray is good. You don't even do it, you can't say nothing," Ruckus packs his spray paints back into his bag, "Put 'Best Superhero of New Babel Ever' underneath it. I think she'll like that,"

The homeless man chuckles. He wipse a few crumbs out of the beard that warps around his chin and over his lips. It is well cut, despite his poverty. A streak of powdery white runs down the center of the otherwise red beard. As he stands his afro bounces. It clatters with the sound of bottle caps and soda tabs like some strange urban wind chimes.

"Well I think you both did just perfect," He says in a light, breathy voice as a smile crosses his face. His warm eyes lighten up as he admires the paint, "If you want a quote, I would choose something that makes people happy, like "we don't need heroes, just friends willing to help," written right across the top were everyone can see it. Yessir, I think that would be perfect, but you know what it could use? Some happy little clouds. Nobody down here remembers those fluffy little guys. Can't really see 'em anymore is why," the homeless man points forlornly at the sky which is covered by the metal floor of New Babel's first level. Red and blue lights twinkle like stars and corporate logos and advertisements scroll along the metal sky.

The cashier takes another long drag of her e-cig, totally oblivious to the conversation. She does snap a pic of Ruckus work with her phone, however.

Aiko looks at the man, and then back at her own work and Ruckus'. "Hey. I think I like that idea you know." She starts to spray on the clouds and puts cute smiley faces over them over both of their sprays, and then underneath it she begins to write in a quote.

'NEW BABEL'S NEWEST FRIEND' is written in full bold letters over her own spray, and then on the side, she tags the same things as Ruckus, not knowing whether it was what she was supposed to do.

"I hope one day we get to the see the sky again you know. My friends and I got to see it tonight in the woods, outside of Wasabiland. It was wonderful, stars and everything, you know, until Magicana Jane came and disrupted everything."

She takes a moment to look at her work and then takes out her phone and takes a few picture of both hers and Ruckus' stuff.

"Anyway guys, you ready to head off? We got some movies to watch and I think Frank and Vlad are going to be at Ruckus' before we are now."

The City of New Babel #2: Hashtag Choice!
In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 153):

"Yeah, I'm ready to go," Wawa says, throwing her bags over her shoulder.

"Okay. Remember to be quiet going in," Ruckus follows Wawa out of the alleyway back onto the main street.

The walk to Ruckus' house is fraught with strange smells coming from the gutters and open pipes in the walls. The constant drip-drop of the water falling off the city buildings mingles with the group's footfalls. Neon lights flash overhead, and advertisements play across the sky offering cleaning products, new monthly subscription boxes, and the Best Financial Advice EverTM from Lo Taipez (that pretentious bastard). Odd people walk about the streets dressed in raincoats and coveralls. A few turn into the alleyways, or head down into the open manholes, going deeper into the bowels of New Babel, into the fabled Undercity. A quick detour takes the group into a store for a few bags of chips and some bottles of soda, but before long you return to Ruckus' apartment building.

Waiting outside the ratty building, is Frank and Vlad. They had crouched up on the stoop and were talking about romance, comedy, and the importance of musicals in culture when Aiko, Ruckus, and Wawa turn the corner. Ruckus opens the door to the building and lets Frank and Vlad in.

Wawa stops you, pulling you to the side of the stoop where nobody can hear. She flashes a smile and says, "So, is there anything you want to tell me? Not pushing, just want to be sure we got it all out. This is, like, our last chance to speak without everyone in the building eavesdropping. So, is there anything I should know if we're going to keep this secret? Like, do your parents know? If you go missing, can I tell them? If you make it big are you gonna cut Wawa in on the cash?" She juggles her hands and gives you an inquiring look.

Aiko stares at her and then nods and smiles. "My parents know I can call ghosts and spirits, they don't know I'm trying to become a super hero but I'm sure they can put two and two together, and if I ever make it big, I plan to use all the cash to refurbish our home, Wawa, so I guess you do kind of get to be cut in with some cash! After all, all the big super heroes are from the top levels, majorly uncool. None of them care about Wasabiland, they think we're all crooks and rats, which is even more uncool."
