The City of New Babel #2: Hashtag Choice!
In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 155):

"True that," Wawa says with a nod of the head.

"Yo, you guys coming?" Ruckus calls out from the door. Wawa jumps up the stoop and goes through the door joining Frank and Vlad inside. Ruckus holds it open until Aiko goes in as well. Everyone clambers up the stairs and into Ruckus' apartment, then everyone piles into Ruckus' room as quietly as possible. As soon as everyone is in and the door closes behind, Ruckus screams.

"Oh no!," he dives into his backpack and pulls out his ouija board, "I forgot to get her to sign it. Agh, the spirits told me to bring it. I thought they just wanted to do, like, ghost stuff in the forest. Ugh, that's so sterile," Ruckus smacks his head with the board.

"That's okay, Ruckus. I'm sure you'll have another chance. How about we sit down and watch a musical?" Vlad says patting Ruckus on the back as the opening sequence to Blabla Land begins to play. Everyone settles in for a song-filed movie night.

City lights blink through the windows of a high rise loft. They bathe the room in purple and blue, highlighting the fine threads of the burgundy couch and the supple fabrics of the fine silk curtains. A plethora of strange items are arrayed throughout the room: antique helmets with glowing eyes and flaming runes sit on pedestals, ancient weapons with auras of swirling power hide inside glass cases, and magic jewelry from eyeball necklaces to golden power bracelets are scattered over the tops of cabinets and side tables, intermingled with pants, shirts, shoes, and capes.

The lights flick on, and the entrance door swings open. Magicana Jane struts in, finishes drinking a bottle of bubbly water, and discards the empty bottle on the ground before lying down on the sofa in a tired heap. She kicks off her boots and stretches her legs into the air.

“Bring me a warm blanket for my hands! I think I might have gotten frost burn. Doesn’t matter though, I got my scepter. Now all I have to do is track down the last piece so I can finish my collection,” Magicana Jane says as she waves the glowing scepter through the air, making whishing and wubbing noises as it passes over her head.

“You received two calls, ma’am. One from your parents, they wish to know how you fare, and one other from the People’s Communist Party of New Babel,” A stern voice like rumbling stones informed Magicana Jane as it handed her a heated towel.

“I’ll ring mum and dad later. Play the other,” Magicana Jane says while warming her fingers.

Static fills the room’s sound system for a split second before a heavy voice, thick with accent booms out of the speakers.

“Comrades of New Babel, the time is now for communism to strike. We have gathered, we have armed, and we have prepared to attack at— phfftzzzzzzzzztttt”

The message cuts off as soon as Magicana Jane flicks her hand through the air. She waves away the stern-voiced servant and stares out the window. Beneath her the city glows, its brazen lights accost her windowsill, throwing themselves at her feet as soon as they enter her room. They hide something from her, a missing piece, a final component to a finished masterpiece that might very well put the world in danger. In her hand, wet and cold, is the key to finding it, a scepter imbued with the spiritual powers of a mountain. She can see the rising slopes of Mt. Bering from the couch. She can look down on the mountain. It seems dull and faded against the black sky. Upon the mountain, a spirit sleeps restlessly. She doesn’t care. Her attentions are welded to the scepter in her clammy hands. Soon, soon she would search for her missing piece and complete the ancient set. Now she just needed a way to keep those meddling superheroes off her back.

The forest that surrounds the mountain is quiet. The campfires have all been put out, any remaining reporters and bloggers have found their way out of the woods and uploaded their pieces. #SpiritCaller is trending across the web along with a pair of pictures and a cellphone video. But in the forest, there are no sounds except crickets. There are not lights. Even the moon seems dim. The entire mountain feels cold and nearly lifeless, and it smells magical.

A creature like a bipedal tiger huffs in the air. He can smell the magic, like a sweet burning smell that lingers along the throat. He draws it all in, the empty sound, the lifeless feel, the chilling sensations that creep down his spine from head to tail. He feels drawn to the empty cave where all the scents seem to converge. Three are particularly interesting, one of high-end perfume and magic, another of cold, wasabi, and magic, and the third almost exactly like the scent of the forest, but bestial and ancient. He stands at the entrance of the cave. A bestial instinct warns him from trespassing. The wind blows through his fur, urging him to leave. Tigerman picks something off his belt, which holds his loincloth securely in place. It is a little scanner. It beeps and beeps which only angers Tigerman. He squeezes his claws tightly and crushes the scanner, its remains fall into the grass. He rearranges the "Tigerman" buckle on his belt and pushes up his many armbands, each adorned with the logo of a different company, all sponsors of Tigerman. He raises his head to the air and draws deep the scents of his prey. His eyes glimmer with predatory hunger as he finds the scent. A low growl thunders in his throat, and he dashes off, sprinting through the cold forest of Mt. Bering towards the rising mountain of civilization, New Babel.

Who, or what, is the unfortunate prey Tigerman is tracking? When will Magicana Jane continue her quest? Does Tutonok, the Spirit Bear, have what is takes to perform on Dancing with the Spirits? What is Spirit Caller's breast size?

All of these will be answered in the next episode of . . .

The City of New Babel #3: The Revolution Bears its Teeth!
In reply to The Narrator (msg # 156):

The City of New Babel #3: The Revolution Bears its Teeth!

It’s another wet and wacky day underneath the city of New Babel. The rats are chirping and the massive fluorescent lights overhead are shining on the stinking sinkhole that is Wasabiland. Another day of school has just finished at Satchmo High and the leaving student body intermingles with the delinquents at the gates.

Everyone has things to do today. Wawa has a handball team meeting. The big game is soon, there are only a few more scrimmages before the Satchmo Bronze goes up against their arch-rivals from Fang Island High, the Wolves. They haven’t left yet; if there anywhere it’s probably the gym. Aiko can hear the sound of balls whacking off the walls and thumping across the courts.

"Alright ladies, keep up the hustle. Nice form Sam, keep the ball high. Bend at the knees Ivy, at the knees, you gotta get low and hit the ball. No, Wawa, no. What are you doing? What's been going on with you?" The booming voice of Coach Emilio echoes around the gym and into the hallways. His next words are quieter, almost as if he wants to whisper, but just isn't capable, "Wawa, I told you you've been slipping. You can't keep hanging out with those friends of yours, you're missing practice hours. I'm just trying to look out for you."

Ruckus is working on a school project in the library. He has cordoned off the entire horror section and taken most of the books about ghosts from the non-fiction section as well. You can almost hear him battling with Mrs. Slugworth and her band of trainee-librarians. The library seems quiet as usual, but suddenly a crash comes from behind the doors. The muffled voice of Mrs. Slugworth roars through the walls .

"You little brat! I am going to throw you out of here! Trainees! Get him! Don't let him get away!" Her hoarse voice peels the glue off the walls sending a sheaf of posters flying as another set of crashes come raining down inside the library.

Frank is having another session with the school counselor. They have already called you into the office three times this week to discuss Franks, ahem, tendencies. His obsession with you seems harmless, but who knows, and his memory-loss is most disconcerting, but the counselor seems sure this might be a real case of multiple personality disorder. She can’t stop talking about it, and the awards someone in her position could win.

"Oh yes," Ms. Sakura chats to the school's front desk woman as they walks back to their office, "He is just amazing. Can't remember a single thing one moment, entirely different person the next. At the moment he just keeps asking to see his friend Aiko. I'm not bringing her in again though, besides it might be good to get a little separation between them."

Vlad seems to be alone. You can see him waiting by a bus stop, looking at his phone. Aiko can remember him talking, very excitedly, about an internship he managed to secure in one of the Steelson’s factories in The Blocks (a section of the New Babel’s ground floor dedicated to industry, factories, etc.). Perhaps that was today. He had just finished putting up a set of posters on the bus stop (Help #FindScreamingGirl) and the glue is still stuck to his hands. He is shaking his hands vigorously while he bounces his phone between them. He picks up a red flyer from the floor and wipes his hands on it.

"Hey! What the heck? You can't just use my flyers to wipe your hands, man. That's not cool," says the scrawny teenage girl handing out flyers at the school gate. She snatches the flyer out of Vlad's hands and stuffs it into her pocket, "I'll take an apology thank you."

Any of them might be available if you want to check in, but you can't see them all at once, and they might not all be available for long.

The events of the other night still emerge from the depths of the internet. More and more people have been talking about Spirit Caller. The video taken by a camper showing the mysterious golden woman of incredible height and Spirit Caller battling with the self-proclaimed Magicana Jane has continued to gather views. Pictures and posts about Spirit Caller have gone viral. I few crackpots have even been posting conspiracy theories that Spirit Caller is the #ScreamingGirl, but they’re crazy. Ruckus has had his hands full moderating the Spirit Caller forums.

Aiko can even feel Tutonok, the Spirit Bear’s, presence lingering on the mountain. It is feint, but steady. Every so often she can smell the forest trees, and hear the gurgling of mountain creaks. I few times already, Tutonok has contacted Aiko, mostly through her dreams, but a few times while she has been awake to speak about Magicana Jane and ask if there was anything Aiko wanted to know about her powers, the spirit world, or the magic surrounding Fang Island.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 158):

"Hiya Aiko," Vlad waves over to you, but the girl standing in front of him grabs his shirt and wrenches him back towards her.

As you get closer you can make out more details of the girl. She has a thin, very red face and black hair tied up in a ponytail. She has tucked her khaki trousers into her red rubber boots and wears a short trench coat with a blue striped shirt underneath. She is seems taller than average , but is mostly just skinny and straggly. She drives one finger into Vlad's chest and grips his shirt collar with the other hand.

"You were talking to me. I think you were just about to give me an apology, right?" She pulls a flier out of her pocket and smacks Vlad's cheek with the red paper, "You ruined one of my flyers, right? You gotta apologize for that, or do you think it's okay to just step on people like that?"

Vlad smiles awkwardly and shakes his head. He tries to wave her off, leaning away from her and the red flier in her hand, but with no success. Vlad's mouth moves as if to speak, but only stutters and spit come out. That really makes the girl angry. Every time a bit of spit hits her face, her brow furrows a little deeper and her face becomes redder. Aiko can almost hear the girl's teeth grinding.

"I'm just trying to get an apology is all," The girls says as she folds her arms.

"Hi Aiko," Vlad says. He seems stunned by the encounter.

You hold the flyer in your hand. It is made of thick, red paper. On the front is a picture of a crossed hammer and sickle with the letters PCPoNB across the top. Inside are short paragraphs explaining the wonders of communism and the evils of the political and wealthy 2nd and 3rd level of New Babel. Giving it a quick skim, you can catch passages urging people to revolt, to demand communism and equality for all, and to dismantle multiple companies and government institutions. It ends with an invitation to call a phone number and receive instructions on what to do next and where to attend the next meeting. #PCPoNB #Communism

"So? My apology. Now, please," The girl taps her foot on the sidewalk.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 165):

Aiko walks through the empty hallways until she reaches a set of orange double doors and enters the gym from the far side. The gym is like a large rectangle with one set of double doors on its short side, two doors on either long side, and two doors leading to the boy's and girl's locker rooms on the opposite end. Folded bleachers line the two long sides of the gym in three separate groups with the exits into the hallway between them. Basketball courts are painted onto the laminated wood flooring, but it is scuffed and beaten.

You come into the gym and discover a scene of carnage! Clothes and school uniforms have been thrown across the floor. People are screaming and yelling. You can see Wawa among one group of girls throwing balls at another group of kids. The other group is dressed in blue full-body spandex suits. A few of them have rubber or plastic wolf masks as well as Wolf jerseys.

The blue group is pelting Wawa and her team with slime-filled balloons that they have carried to the school in several trash bags. Wawa is fighting back, taking cover behind a cart filled with basketballs in the middle of the gym and ordering her team to return fire with whatever they have. Balls, clothes, hair ties, sweatbands, even shoes go flying across the gym passing the slime balloons in the air.

The blue group seem to be huddled around at the entrance to the locker room, keeping Wawa and her team out. There are no teachers to be seen, and nothing said in the gym can be heard from the hallways.

The City of New Babel #3: The Revolution Bears its Teeth!
In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 167):

Aiko reaches into the cold Otherworld and feels something tug at her call. It flies out from the void into existence and dances on Aiko's head.

It is a little impish creature with large hands and large feet about the size of a house cat. Its big, almond eyes peer at the world without pupils. Instead, within the eye, Aiko can see visions and images of laughing faces, green slime, burning bodies, and hands clasped around each other. The scrawny body is covered in silk hair from head to toe, and a series of curling tails (about 5), all connected at the base, seems to float in the air and follow after the creature. It grins, showing its rows of needle like teeth. Its large, bat-like ears turn and curl with interest. It rubs the tips of its ears and stares at the trash bags and the slime balloons. Suddenly the little spirit’s eyes grow wide.

A flash of images spin through Aiko’s mind: Green slime, trash bags, explosions, screaming faces, and a toothy smile.

Before Aiko can react the creature has disappeared. Then Aiko can see it, high above the trash bags filled with balloons. The creature stares directly at the target and leaps. It screams wildly, somersaulting through the air. Everyone in the gym looks up at the falling, screaming thing just before it slams into the bag.

The balloons explode!

Ka-Booosh! Splat! Splat!

Everything, from the locker wall of the gym to the half way line, is covered in green slime. There is more slime than any trash bag could have held, but it is all there, sticky and stinking of rotten eggs and farts. All the kids begin to gag. A few start heaving. Wawa looks like she is going to be sick. Her tongue is hanging out of her mouth, and she is on her hands and knees, clutching her stomach.

Aiko was, thankfully, out of range, but even she can smell the foul odor. Another set of images flow through her mind: A grinning face, rotten eggs, green goo, and feet slashing in a rain puddle. Aiko looks over to the trash bag and can see the little creature dancing in the green slime. It smiles back at Aiko. It’s ears are vibrating happily.

Nobody else has noticed it yet, but there are cries of “What was that?” “How much slime was that?” “Dead cat? Raccoon?” “I’m gonna hurl,” filling up the gym.

At the moment everyone has stopped moving or fighting, but Aiko can still hear something coming from the locker rooms.

(Wood Cat rolled a 4 (2+2) to stop the madness)

In reply to The Narrator (msg # 168):

Aiko screams internally and stares at the spirit angirly. She tries to establish a connection with the spirit.

Her internal screaming eventually turns into real screaming however and she shouts, "What the hell! Why did you go and do that? Look at this mess!" Her shouting should echo throughout the confused gym, but specifically, she is shouting and staring at the spirit that hopefully only she should be able to see. She hopes it feels sorry for what it did, and for taking the prank too far.

She then demands  that the spirit cleans the mess up normally, without ruining the gym anymore. But again, she shouts that out, hoping its in a way where no one suspects her of talking to any one person in particular.

Aiko tries to connect with the little impish spirit, but only receives images of smiling people and green goo. Constantly. She tries to drop the connection, but she keeps seeing those images. All sorts of smiling, happy people, and gooey, green goo. Everything Aiko thinks about eventually becomes covered in goo or smiling people. Both feel creepy.

The creature looks at Aiko and shrugs its shoulders. It flashes an image of a frowning child, then flips the image upside down and has it splash through a puddle. Then it returns to jumping on the goo covered trash bag.

Some of the students are now coming to. A few of them start squinting at the squashed trash bag. They can hear sounds of something shifting on the plastic and see the green goo splashing about. A few of them point, saying, "Is that a monkey?" But most of the kids just look confused and sick. Some of the kids in blue are scrambling towards the exits.

Wawa is the only one who looks at Aiko after hearing her shout. She looks confused and still very green, but glad to see you more or less. She tries to stand, steadying herself with the basketball cart located in the center of the goo covered gym.

Then the door to the locker room slams open and a kid covered in blue paint jumps out and slips on the goo. He flips in the air and lands on his face.

Woop Splat!

The kid groans. Just behind him, another three kids dressed in blue, one wearing a wolf mask, another with shorts tied to his head, and the leader in sunglasses, step out of the locker room. In their hands are several trophies belonging to the school. Their heads dart around until they find the exit they are looking for. They try to ignore the broken trash bags in front of them (seemingly unable to see the spirit) as they begin to head towards the door closest to the the locker wall on the side of the gym (Aiko's left side if she is facing the locker wall/their right side).

(The connection to the spirit is still open and covered in goo)

Aiko dashes across the gym, heading directly for the Fang Island High kids. But as soon as she crosses the threshold from laminated basketball court to goo covered floor Aiko slips. She skids across the gym, past Wawa, past all the girls, and collides right into the kid wearing a wolf mask. You and the kid both go sprawling across the gym, sliding around in the goo. It stinks of rotten eggs, feels sticky, and tastes horrible. Trophies go flying across the room. The kid lands on his back with Aiko next to him. Seeing a chance, Wawa tells her team to jump on him, and they pile onto the guy.

(Aiko rolled a 7 to tackle a kid)

The spirit hears the command and sends a flash of images into Aiko's mind. First he sends images of trees and cats, then he sends images of people hitting their heads, and laughing faces. Tree Cat (as he has named himself) wrings his ears, stomps his feet, and disappears. He reappears with a large plastic trash bag in the trophy cup of the kid wearing shorts on his head.

The kid's eyes balloon when he sees Tree Cat wink at him. The kid screams, but its cut short as the spirit pulls the trash bag over the kid's head, smothering him in goo. The kid screams and runs into the door, slamming his head with a resounding THONK! before he falls unconscious with a splash. The spirit chuckles and fades away. Aiko can still feel Wood Cat's presence, but she cannot see him. A few more students point at the kid, "I swear there was a monkey-thing there. I'm, like, sure man. Something freaky is happening."

(Wood Cat rolled a 9 to trip a kid)

The final kid, seeing his posse defeated and the exit blocked by his fallen friend, decides to climb the bleachers. He drops most of the trophies except one, the largest, most impressive trophy that Satchmo High has ever won, the pride and joy of Satchmo Sports Teams throughout the years. He climbs to the top and holds the trophy over his head.

"None of you drips move! I swear, like, I will throw it!" The kid shouts, waving the trophy over his head, "Won't be so funny to throw big rats at us then!"

"Yeah, that's why I stole it," The kid in sunglasses says to Aiko, "and if you drips don't back up, I will smash it."

Behind the kid, Aiko can see Wood Cat creeping along the walls. He is crawling closer and closer to the kid. Everyone is watching the kid, but nobody seems to have noticed Wood Cat.

"Yo, get down before you crack your head open! Just put the trophy down and you can drag your friends out of here," Wawa shouts up a the kid.

"Ha! I'm not leaving until you return our mascot! You stole our Wolfy, so you gotta pay!" The kid holds the trophy over his head as he yells.

Just then Wood Cat strikes. He leaps from his perch on the wall and grabs the crotch of the kid's pants. They fall down around his ankles revealing his blue boxers. The kid throws the trophy in the air as everyone gasps. He bends down to pull up his pants, but Wood Cat grabs his waistband and yanks him backwards off the bleachers. He screams. His boxers snag on the corner of the bleachers and he gets a massive wedgie! Wood Cat chuckles. The trophy falls out of the sky and lands right in Aiko's arms. The kid's underwear tears and he falls onto the ground with a thump. All he can do is groan.

"Good job Aiko," Says one of the girls. "I can't believe you caught it. I was too busy laughing at his wedgie," Says another. "Yeah, serves him right! You need a change of clothes Aiko? I have some spare in my locker," Offers another girl.

Wawa gives Aiko a thumbs up, "Thanks for tackling that guy. I still feel like puking. Way sterile."

Wood Cat is hiding in the bleachers, invisible to everyone else. He is giggling and snickering at the kid's torn boxers.

(Wood Cat rolled a 12 to sack the kid)

The City of New Babel #3: The Revolution Bears its Teeth!
In reply to The Narrator (msg # 174):

Aiko looks around and starts laughing, trying not to smell. "That was amazing." She silently thanks Wood Cat and releases him happily having the trophies back in her school's possession. Then she turns to Wawa. "What happened here, seriously, are these guys really from our rival? Also is your coach going to be okay with this?"

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 175):

Wood Cat bows and an image of a people hugging appears in Aiko's mind. When you look back, Wood Cat is gone.

"Yeah, we're from Fang Island! And we just got the sickest revenge on you guys! Ahwoooooo!" The kid in the mask howls. He struggles under the weight of the girls. The kid with shorts around his head is still unconscious, and the kid in sunglasses is just groaning and rubbing his butt.

All of the girls gather around. Their uniforms are stained, and goo has gotten all over their hair and bodies. A few of them have to empty the green stuff from their shoes and socks. Wawa seems to have composed herself and is no longer looking sick, but she does pinch her nose to avoid the smell.

"They sound sterile enough to be the drips from Fang Island, yeah. Last time I saw Couch though he was in the locker room," Wawa says to Aiko, "but I don't wanna be here when he sees this. I really don't wanna get stuck cleaning it."

"I wouldn't go in there if I was you. It ain't pretty," the kid says with a smirk, nodding to the locker room.

The locker room door is slightly ajar, a trail of goo leads out of it. Inside you can hear someone mumbling and groaning.

Aiko turns to the kid and sticks her tongue. "Look whose talking, loser! You're all hurt and injured."

Aiko then turns to Wawa and smiles. "I'll go find your coach and explain what happened. I heard she doesn't like me that much so if possible, I'll take the brunt of it for you guys!" Aiko turns and starts walking to locker room. Steadily making sure she isn't going to do anything that makes her seem stupid. She summons another spirit to help her.

The kid rolls his eyes and laughs, "Yeah, but it was worth it. So sick! Ahwooooooo!"

The girls jump on him until he shuts up, eventually squeezing the air out of his lungs until he begged them to let up.

While everyone is distracted, Aiko sends another call into the spirit world. Out of the cold realm returns Toby! He materializes into the world, floating above Aiko's head. He take a big sniff of the air and wags his tail happily. When he sees Aiko, Toby's tail goes into hyper drive. It propels him forward to Aiko's side where he flips onto his back and begs for belly rubs.

Strangely however, Toby stares at the door. He looks at the top of the door in particular and growls.

A few of the girls turn their heads and cup their ears. They screw up their faces as they try to concentrate on the strange sound.

(Aiko rolled an 11 to call a spirit)

Aiko smiles at Toby and then looks up at the door. Trying to see what he sees, before going into the locker room.

Looking through the crack of the door, Aiko can just manage to see the bottom of a bucket, no doubt filled with more slime and goo. It is perched on the very edge of the door, leaning against the wall so that it will tip and fall onto the head of the next person to walk through the door.

Toby flies up to the door and growls at the bucket.
