The City of New Babel #1: The First Night
The City of New Babel #1: The First Night

Shivers race down your spine as the time approaches. Your costume feels tight on your chest and you can barely breathe. The first night on patrol! The first night of real crime fighting. The first night to put your powers to the test. The first night as a new hero in !The City of New Babel!

All the chores are done. Family and friends have been warded off; you have plans, it's not a good night, just feeling too tired, headache, hemorrhoids, 24-hour virtual reality gaming sesh. What did you tell them? Who did you tell? Because what ever you told them, it worked, and tonight you are alone. Alone, except for siren call of New Babel's emergency services.

The blue crystal shimmers in your belonging, powerful and mysterious. What have you done with it? What do you plan to do with it? Regardless, you clear your mind. Lounging in your room, or brooding on a rooftop, where ever you like best, you are tuned into the New Babel Police Scanner when you hear three emergency calls, code 938-V (Super-villainy), blare across the radio in quick secession.

You have enough time to respond to one call, which will you choose?

The first call came in frantically amid the sounds of a shootout and, oddly enough, canned audience applause. "The bank is being robbed," the husky voice of a police sergeant blares across the scanner as gunshots begin to fly, "We got a code 938-V at the Old Town First Bank. Requesting immediate assistance. Reports of floating money bags, colorful explosions, and magic wands! What the? Wait, No!" His voice disappears in an explosion. Screams echo across the open channel. A voice returns, but the sergeant has been replaced by a quaking sound and a sadistic giggle.

The second call was from a worried voice, barely capable of getting out the words, the police officer stutters, "Requesting backup. Code 938-V. Location East Docks, Carnegie avenue, warehouse 38--" It stops. All you can hear is heavy breathing and the distant sound of muffled voices. As the voices fade, the officer returns more frightened than ever. "Weapon shipment. They are trying to rob the weapon shipment. I'll delay as long as possible. Send reinforcements soon. Officer Quincy out." You hear him gulp. The call ends.

The third call was quick, yet odd. "This is security chief Norman from the Long Fang Security House reporting in about a sensor trip at a data library in Tiny Tokyo, Myamoto  Street, 4450. Seems the sensor has gone haywire. Maintenance Issues. Do not send aid." The security chief issued his cancel code, but continued to muse on the subject, "I don't know why they're going off, they were just replaced yesterday after the failed break-in. Oh, well. As I said, do not send aid." The call ends in static, but the words buzz through your mind like a fly that just won't go away.

A bank robbery, a warehouse invasion, or a strange call about broken sensors at a data-library, which call will you answer tonight, and which two will you risk letting go?

In reply to The Narrator (msg # 1):

Aiko sits atop her apartment buildings, letting the illusion of being higher than anyone else sink into her body, it was her favorite place to perch and pretend to brood, although really, in her ears, was just the music of contemporary American rap artists, her did not nod, but her soul definitely was. Before listening to the rap music, she would have never thought to lie to her parents, but Tupac's bad influence on children was taking a strange hold on Aiko as well, and she had succeeded in getting out of social contact by telling her parents that she was going to go on a twenty-four seven study trip, but she was in fact strapping on her tight purple outfit and climbing to the top of the apartment building.

She listened to her rap music with one headphone in, like a chain and ball, and with the other ear listening to the radio when the three different messages came up. She and Casper couldn't decide on which route to take, and so they played rock, paper, scissors. Casper won, so the dynamic duo rushed to the bank robbery DATA LIBRARY, Aiko draped in her dark violet cloak and cape.

Also it was really only Aiko who rushed over, Casper just floated by aimlessly and irritated.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 2):

The data-library is a large metal warehouse secured behind a high fence topped with barbed wire. A sign (Protected by Long Fang Security) is attached to the fence by zip tie. Large tinted windows dot the building, and, though they block out most light, one can see small red flashes going off every other second. The shrill sound of a siren can also be heard from out on the street. Behind the fence is an empty parking lot and a few streetlamps. The front entrance is a set of double doors (likely locked). Two clear windows are on either side of the doors (they are the only clear windows on the front of the building). The roof of the data-library is flat. A small ledge goes around its edge. The peaks of glass skylights can just be seen rising above the ledge. Small lights line the ledge, blinking red. The few people who walk the streets ignore the alarm, or give it only a passing glance.

No police or security are present, just as the police scanner advised.

Spirit Caller arrives on the scene with Casper floating beside her. What does she do?

In reply to The Narrator (msg # 3):

Spirit Caller goes up to the front doors, and pushes them, hoping for a very easy break-in.

She also tells Casper to go check out the rest of the building while she finds a way inside.

In reply to Spirit Caller (msg # 4):

Spirit Caller tries to push on the doors. They do not budge.

Casper flies off through the building, disappearing through the concrete walls. Soon after he returns, flustered and worried.

"I went through everything. Nothing's been moved except in the third floor. Someone is trying to download some files off one of the data-shelves. But, but, I saw, a dark spirit! It was dark and shadowy. It spun around and I think it saw me!"
