George steps up next to Doctor Saroch and tries to look intimidating.  If this chap won’t listen to reason, maybe he’d respond to good thrashing... or such is the implication.

The caretaker is silent as he hears Dr Saroch out and then tuts to himself before responding, "Pook eh, flat 6." He doesn't exactly look devastated at news of the young man's passing.

"He owed back rent, can't let you in unless that's paid - them's the rules," he looks Dr Saroch over again, "Five pounds gets you in. If you give it to me I'll make sure it gets to the landlord safely."

Saroch lets a disdainful look flicker across his countenance before he reaches out his billfold and extracts a five-pound note.

"There's for the landlord," he says, taking out a one-pound note as well, "And this is for you, IF we are allowed to remove any of Pook's property we deem necessary to send to his next of kin."

“And you might want to keep quiet about this,” George says as he cracks the knuckles of his strong hands, while gazing at the addressee’s skinny, easily broken legs.

The man nods slowly as he pockets Dr Saroch's money and comes the closest to breaking into a smile that you have seen from him yet in your brief acquaintance. He disappears for a brief moment and then comes back into view with a bunch of keys and beckons you to follow him.

Entering the main building through the front door he leads you upstairs to the top floor to a door with a rusty metal '6' nailed onto it. After rummaging through the keys for a moment the caretaker selects one and slots it into the lock - opening the door with a theatrical 'click'. He turns the handle and pushes the door open as he steps to one side to let you past, "Take what you want guv, if he's dead it's probably all just heading for the bone-grubbers anyway". As you enter he pulls the door to as he turns and walks back down the stairs, the keys clattering as he goes.

Inside is pretty much you would expect from a student lodging. A small, sparsely furnished single room with a small bed and a grubby window which lets in only a murky light. Almost every available surface (though those are fairly few and far between) is covered in books and papers, some with plates and cups still standing on them bearing the detritus of previous meals.

George starts removing the dirty plates and piling them up in one place (preferably a spot on the floor), so that the others can more easily access the books and papers.  He offers to do any heavy lifting that may need to get done.

His reasons are mixed: he does want to be helpful, but he also needs the physical labor as a distraction.  Something about this place makes him nervous.  He’s also not too crazy about the smell.

Saroch is brisk in his assignments.

"Thank you, George, for clearing those things. Next, please open that window and dispel some of these bad odors. Then, remove the mattress from the bed; you may put it in the corridor if you like.

"Miss Meadowcroft, will you be so kind as to go through the wardrobe and any drawers you find? We will want any letters from his family that we might notify them of their loss.

"I will sort through these books and papers. Keep a watch, also for any sort of carpetbag or satchel we might put things in."

He begins his task immediately, glancing at the book titles and quickly scanning the papers.

First, George gladly rips the window open.  If that goes as swimmingly as he expects, next he’ll toss that mattress out in the hall... but first, he’ll examine it carefully.  Also, he’ll make sure that nothing goes flying out from under the mattress when he lifts it (literally or figuratively).

It doesn't take too long to identify a series of letters to and from Matthew Pooks' parents which clearly set out their contact details. Beyond that there isn't a huge amount of interest within the small flat - the clothes and other papers are exactly what you would expect to find in a student's flat with nothing out of the ordinary.

The big find comes when the mattress is removed. Tucked under one corner of the bedframe is a small wooden box, about the size of a large book, firmly clasped shut with a padlock. The contents must be interesting for it to be hidden and secured in such a fashion.

OOC: With rolls I'm happy either for you to roll your own or leaving it to me. I'll roll something up in the event that it hasn't been done at the point I get to post.

"Ah!" says Saroch when he sees the wooden box, "We'll take that with us. These books and papers are no more than his studies, it seems.

"Miss Meadowcroft, did you see anything like a satchel?"

I have some skill as a locksmith.  Should I try to jimmy open that padlock?  Not sure I can do it here without access to better tools, but I’d be happy to try.”  George rubs his hands together eagerly.

“As you wish.”  George looks somewhat disappointed.  He obviously was looking forward to breaking something open.

The box lifts easily from the floor and feels like it has one large item inside though, without opening, it is impossible to tell what it might contain.

Amelia seems distracted and, when you follow her gaze, you can see that she is watching someone outside. Standing on the street and smoking is a short, fat man wearing a cheap suit and a pork pie hat. He would be fairly unremarkable but for the fact he seems to be staring up intently at the window of the room you're in...

Hefting the carpetbag with the wooden box and other items, Saroch looks out the window.

"I am going to start off to my lodgings at 15 Black Friars Lane. I think it likely that fellow will follow me. I would be obliged Mr Banks, if you would accompany me. After a few minutes, Miss Meadowcroft, you would oblige me by following that individual."

He smiles and nods to his companions and goes down to the street, striking off for Black Friars.

George agrees to the good doctor’s plan, and accompanies him.  He does have some misgivings about the lady being on her own, but he keeps then to himself.  He doesn’t fancy himself the brains of this outfit.

George and Dr Saroch leave the property and Amelia hangs back for a minute or two before following. Against expectations the man watching the window has not followed the gentleman and instead remains lurking on the street outside.

He watches with thinly veiled interest as Amelia leaves though does not approach her or even move to follow. Amelia doubles back after she has moved out of sight to find the little man now moved up to the doorway of the lodgings. He fiddles with the lock for a few moments before furtively opening the door and entering. He remains inside for some fifteen minutes before leaving and walking at quite some pace away. Amelia follows him until he catches a cab on the main street and then he is lost to the London traffic.

For their part George and Dr Saroch reach the doctor's rooms without incident and Amelia joins them a short while later, similarly unmolested, to explain what she just witnessed.

"Aha!" Saroch exclaims upon hearing Amelia's account, "It appears, my friends, we were in the niche of time, had we not been prompt, other forces would have forestalled us and this treasure" --he produces the box from the bag-- "would have been lost to us.

"George, Miss Meadowcroft, will you endeavour to open the box while I pen a note of condolence for the parents."

It is not the first such letter he has written in his profession and the formalities are quickly concluded, expressing regrets to the Pook family, making clear that he was not the attending physician but had been summoned when the patient was in extremis. He assures the family that all possible measures were taken to preserve life, but that the end was mercifully quick. He does not include his address, nor does he suggest who the family might contact to recover the remains. Best to let the authorities consign the poor wretch to the ground quickly and anonymously.

George gets to work on the box, using his knife if he finds it necessary.  From time to time, he gives the good doctor an unpleasant look.  He still doesn’t appreciate that Amelia waa placed in harm’s way.  He vows to himself that he’ll speak up next time, if such a thing is suggested again.  What a terribly unfair position to put a woman in!  What if she’d been attacked?  George still felt like a coward for allowing her to go unprotected.

George is something of a professional when it comes to getting through locks and the quality of padlock which a student can afford is limited - it doesn't take him very long at all to get through. Inside the box is a large, smartly bound book and nothing else.

A cursory glance at the initial pages indicate the book you now hold is Mr Pook's journal. While it commences in an extremely neat and orderly fashion the final few entries are a little more haphazard and are not clearly dated - this seems more to be down to excitement and a sense of urgency than anything else.

The only entries of any specific interest are the final four:

"-Menkaph has a powerful influence on the gullible. He carries the Blood Red Fez that Professor Demir described in a nondescript hat box of dirty brown. Neither he nor his minions seems willing to touch it.

-My researches at the British Museum Library have called me away from time to time but my regular checks on Menkaph suggest that things are unchanged. They are staking out a house at Blithering Lane in Rotherhithe. I have asked around and I have discovered a fez collector lives there! Professor Demir urges caution but I easily outwitted the clods Menkaph had watching the place.

-Menkaph plans to depart London on the Orient Express back to Constantinople. I saw him purchase tickets though I could not get close enough to see when he is travelling. There seems to be something else he wants to do while he is in London though it could not be the Fez as he has that in his possession.

-I have decided to steal the Fez from Menkaph. While he is busy in Rotherhithe I shall break into his room and steal the Blood Red Fez itself! With it as my prize I shall then speed back to Constantinople and present it to Professor Demir. I can only imagine the look on his face!"

"Youth," Saroch intones, shaking his head sorrowfully, "So impetuous. A tragic waste of young promise."

With a sigh, he begins preparing to go to the Oriental Club to meet Worth and discover what that worthy academic has learned.

With a sigh, George readies himself for another visit to the Oriental Club.  It’s not his favorite place, but he tries to keep a stiff upper lip about it.

In spite of what I’ve seen, I can’t help but wonder if this is some kind of elaborate hoaxed perpetrated by some sick individuals.” He makes these remarks on the way.
