OOC Discussion (2017)
Ok guys, after tomorrow, 25 June, 2017 in real life time (IRLT), the party will be officially done with chapter 3, and will be between chapters while I spend the next 1-2 weeks IRL moving my family to Texas, closing out the campaign journal for the f2f sessions so that there is something to reference, and making the 3 in-game newspapers for the 1st of Winter, 500 AOV.  During this time, here's what we can do:

1.  Upload your character's portrait, keeping in mind the file size limitations and available default pictures on this site.  If you want to submit an original image for your character portrait (as opposed to using a default one already on this site) it has to go through an approval process with the admins as laid out in the help section.  Let me know if you want to go that route, and I'll assist you in finding the guidance if you need it.

2.  Fill in your character description for your character profiles.  This should be a description of the character's physical outward appearance and nothing more.  As the game progresses, if the character's appearance changes, update the description of what he looks like.

3.  Fill in your character Bio (keeping in mind what you want to share with the other players) and your online character sheets.

4.  Begin interacting in-character at the Thinking Man's Tavern.  This is a low threat opportunity to get used to how pbp role playing works, and a chance to test out the dice rolling tool by interacting with the environment.  It's also a good time for the character's to reflect and chat amongst themselves about the story thus far.  I'll still be available to play NPCs and the environment during this transition phase.

5.  Start the game wiki.  If anyone is motivated enough to volunteer, it would be a big help if someone could repackage all of the campaign journal information into our game's wiki.  This can be a collaborative effort since anyone can edit it, and could be a great way to keep track of the NPCs and plot.  The wiki for our game is located here:  http://wiki.rpol.net/69817

Let me know if you are having any technical challenges by communicating with me and each other OOC here.

Do we have a color code established for ease of reading? e.g.
General action is in black.
"Conversation is in dark blue."
Thoughts are in blue italics.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
Rolls are in spoilers

Action consequences are in bold red.
Private messages prefaced with 'PM' or written in purple.

Thoughts?

if you feel like dice rolls in the open break immersion, then I suggest always using "insert a private line" to the DM, cause I'm the only one who needs to see those anyway.  Then spoilers can be reserved for information that is only seen if someone chooses to inspect something like an item.

I second all. Will have to practice with the colors to memorize.  I like the PM for rolls and spoilers used to even say:

DC 20 perception

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
You see the man tailing you through the crowd of people.

Then if we pass the check we get to see.  Just for when the GM is laying out several if then actions.

yeah, I like the idea of me posting the DC/AC with the result in spoilers.  that minimizes back and forth.  If there are no successes, I can go back and delete the spoiler text after the player(s) roll, and if everyone doesn't succeed, I can convert it to a private line or message if needed.

Ok, I'll let you guys decide what to post in non-private forums for your own character and their contacts, just be aware that not everyone will read it if it's not IC knowledge.  Also be aware that some players will still choose to keep secrets using PMs and special groups.  As the DM, everything I post for the NPCs and environment will be IC knowledge only.  so if you read it from me in an IC forum, then your character knows it.

I am pleased to announce that all previous game journals are updated on the wiki page.  We just entered into the 4th chapter as published by the GM (and publishers).  Chapters 1-3 and side quests (list numbers 1-6) are updated on the main wiki page.

Still working on updating individual NPCs and other data but look for the to annotate that an article is complete.  Read through the previous chapter journals to get up to speed on the recent game history. Post any questions in this thread or PM the GM (The Watcher).

These forums have a neat feature that Mourn and I have been playing with: language groups.  You have seen a couple of posts that look like gibberish since you are not in the group.  Are there any objections to the way we are doing it?  Send your character language proficiency list to the GM so he can create/add you to the language groups.

Greetings most honored and respected constables, [Language unknown:  Hisfi pene, Iopain, Tedverlin, has Ulhaelou Ut re lianwh na wh ha me llpl'rimo resameastourven men.]

In order to maintain the thematic flair of the accents we will post a few words of greeting or common parlance in the clear to help let your character identify the language spoken.  The software is pretty sophisticated and seemed to recognize and not scramble character names.

Primordial (Risurian): English
Danorian: French
Drakrian: Russian
Crisillyrian: Italian
Berian: Spanish
Common: Latin

Voice your ascent or dissent and we can discuss.

Note, if you want to have some individual words or phrases stand out as not jumbled, you can use {} to have the text be unscrambled.  Why would you do this?  Proper names, cognates, or if you are feeling bold and want to use Google translate to copy paste in some commonly known phrases of the correlating real word language for flavor reasons.

Everyone, take note on how Griff posted the entire week.  That's the gold standard to get through the next 6 montage rounds.  If you need to do a bunch of rolls or aren't sure, send me a private message about what you are generally planning to attempt with your preemptive rolls, and I'll tell you what succeeds, and what doesn't, and let you narrate.  My goal is to post a wrap up post each day as a catch all, and maybe throw a curve ball for the next week, not enter into significant dialogue that take multiple back and forth posts to resolve.  IRL, I want to to get this montage done in only 7 rounds of posting, that's how it is designed, and what Griff wrote is the maximum level of detail for each week.  Not every day of the week is crucial, just the highlights.

Ok, I've talked to most of you OOC, and I've been thinking the same thing: the 1-week montage rounds don't work nearly as well in pbp as they do in person.  The sheer amount of back and forth necessary to keep everyone on the same sheet of music is more effort than it is worth.  So here's what we are going to do, today, decide as a group what ship you want to take out, and at the end of the day, I'll summarize the resolution of the next 5 weeks and Time Warp the narrative to the first day of the mission.

In theory montage plans can work, but generally as part of a fully separate thread in which no dialog is posted.  They become non RP reports of activity as a sort of summery of activity, RP and rolls done in other threads that may or may not be PMs. Trying to get more than one montage post per week in pbp however is unlikely at best.

That said the time warp narrative is almost always faster and likely just about as effective given any amount of communication in advance.  Worst case you can usually edit up the important glitches with a few PMs that need not be overly worried about the rush as retroactive details like that are highly unlikely to alter the general narrative.

Great points Cinnabar.  I can see how taking a week per montage would be helpful.  The montage is tough because of the behind the scenes messaging it takes to see if my rolls succeed and if I get the info I want.

So, the ship.  What ship do we take? There are 5 listed in the players guide for the RHC requisition.  We were told two were too conspicuous.  I think the GM needs us to have a chartered crew instead of commercial passage so we can have it move ahead and pick us up at the end.  (at least that's what it sounded like Delft wanted to happen).

Pros and cons to taking a RHC ship that is "less conspicuous"?

GM can we hire a non-RHC ship?  Pros and cons?  Could we even afford it?

Fire as she Bears had rules for additional ship building and stock prices.  Can anyone provide some insight on costs?  GM?

Griff would certainly use his old captain friend to work the wharfs looking for a vessel that would slip in under the cover and provide us quick extraction.  He would make whatever checks are necessary.

As a modus operandi, Griff treats all people he meets as potential assets.  He is evaluating them from the start.  Schmoozing them up to try and befriend them in the best possible way.  (Diplomacy check to influence their attitude). He is actually a pleasant person and enjoys making conversation.  He is also always trying to see what people might be hiding (Sense Motive check).  He will use bluff (Bluff Check) to keep from giving away secrets but usually is not in the business of straight out subversion and misinformation.  The best lie is a partial truth. He uses his extensive knowledge of the local area and nobility (Know Local & Know Nobility) to influence his decisions and help gain him access to where he wants to be.

With that in mind feel free to take liberties.

Good questions.

You can charter a civilian 10 gun mercinary ship for 2,000 GP for the just the ship, but you have to pay standard pay for the captain, officers, and crew.  And you can't give commands or perform the roles of the crew.

Additionally, you could buy a one way steerage passenger ticket for 50 GP a head and take your chances doing the same for the return trip.

If Griff can roll a DC 25, he can convince his friend to loan him a schooner without a crew.  A DC 30, a 10 gun ship.

DC 20, your friend will rent you a ship at half market prices.

If you check the logs from the Macbannin Murder case, the captain of the Silvo is a smuggler who owes the RHC his loyalty as part of a plea bargain.  He is obligated to take you in the Silvo for free, but you can't be sure that you can trust him and his crew.

Then there are the remaining RHC ships.

Hopefully that helps.

Great info. Team?  Thoughts?

Failed the check to get the boat from my friend.  Maybe I got him too hurt in the bar when he caught on fire.  I'd better go smooth over that relationship so it doesn't worsen.

So we are left with the other options.

Checking in on the conversation.  Come on guys, help me with the plans.  How would your cover identities want to travel?  in style on a passenger cruise liner or by a hired ship of your own commission?  Other ideas?

Sorry for the delay in posting. My Windows 10 decided to do a significant update last night and I hate trying to post by phone/tablet.

I say we ride there on a passenger ship each of us in appropriate lodging for our covers. For our trip home though, we commission the RHC cutter Audacious to meet us at our departure port. This ensures we travel there as anonymously as possible but have a reliable ride home.

The RHC Audacious does not come with a crew.  So we would some how need to raise a crew (I don't remember reading rules for that).  I think the Audacious is a low level ship meant for us (PCs) to crew but this mission won't allow.  We want the ship to sail while we aren't on it.  So we are left with the steamship of the RHC- "The Khalundurrin" (slow moving at a speed of 6 per the players guide)

That's compared to a:
  • Row boat: speed 0-3
  • Steamship cutter: 4
  • Cutter: 6
  • Steamship: 6
  • Schooner: 8
  • Frigate: 14
  • Impossible: 22

It's our best best.  Do we have Favor 3+modifiers to call it in?  We have plenty of time but need it for a long duration.  If we do as Mourn recommended and take private transportation over to Beaumont to maintain our cover then we could lessen the duration to only a few days and keep the favor to a minimum.

I recommend that course of action: Take private transportation via passenger ship to Beaumont (wait the 10 days there-magic dead zone) and then the six days by rail to Vendricce.  Have the ship there the morning of the train's arrival (16 Winter) and ready to bail us out if necessary (make a quick departure).

This plan does mean we have no ability to signal the ship from the train.  Much of the rail line is along the water and if we had a chartered ship, which looks less likely now, that would have been handy.

I second Mourn's plan with the change in ship, "The Khalundurrin".

No, you're right.  The timeline has us arriving in Beaumont by 1 Winter and then the train departs 11 Winter.  So we should all be on the same train since that is what the intel suggests but how we get to Beaumont is flexible.
