Just reading about how people actually stored flails on their body because it seems impractical, only to find that historians actually doubt they were ever used beyond peasant revolts, improvised from a tool used to thresh grain.

It all depends on the type of flail. Those with spikes were effective against armored soldiers as the spikes could penetrate the armor. Plus the length of chain or leather allowed the peasant to generate more force in an attack.

If you were wearing armor, hanging the chain off a hook at the waist was a reasonable way to carry it. Plus, you could always make a leather holder for it. Swords without scabbards are awkward, too.

Sorry for my absence. It's been a rough 2 weeks for posting, and then I had company last week which further cut into my time. Barring problems from Hurricane Isaias, I expect to get back on track by Saturday.

When I posted my previous post yesterday, I had every expectation of posting today... may still get to it, but here's an example of what's been happening.

Yesterday, we broke the electric range. First, we broke the glass cook top (it came with the house when we bought it in 2008). When we tried to find the model number so we could order a replacement part, we tried looking under the control panel... and shorted out the controls! So today, we had to deal with that. Got a new/used electric range that'll get delivered tomorrow.

As near as I can tell, this has nothing to do with the above problem, but I only got 4 hours sleep last night. Woke up way too early, couldn't go back to sleep, and my brain's been numb all day, which is why this isn't a Post post.

As the song goes, some days are diamonds, some days are crap/rust/toast.
