Version 1.8.53

Minor:
  • Removed Internet Explorer relying on 'quirks mode' for the fixed headers and footers.
  • Tweaked (improved?) font sizes, line height, and sub/superscript layout.
  • Changed the fixed footer and header scrolling mechanisms (via CSS) to a better format.
  • Changed rounded corners to non-javascript reliant versions with CSS3, and added more to the site due to the ease.  Older (non CSS3 aware) browsers will lose the rounded corners.
    • As a result; Column alignment in tables (mostly not working before) is now definitely broken (browsers don't support it anymore).  Don't use <alignment> in tables to align columns anymore, align the cells instead.
  • Added the ability to link to specific messages, though the fact they can move to different pages (due to the fact RPoL paginates from the most recent post, not the first) can make it unreliable.
  • Stopped the GM menu showing everyone as having no portraits when editing characters.
  • Fixed circumstances where "Delete rMail" wouldn't work for system generated messages.
  • Fixed some incorrect HTML.
  • Fixed the message number reference for replies being out by one (in private threads).
  • Fixed W-P not showing genre and system for the top thread on some (most) pages, as well as notices being incorrectly positioned in searches.
  • Truncated long game systems in W-P for better layout.  Hovering over shows the full system.
  • Fixed inconsistent and incorrect tag display issues for NPCs.
  • Stopped the autosuggest game system searches selecting a system comment if the user accidentally hovers over the comment and then presses enter.  Also disabled the ability for users to click on the comment.
  • Increased the die roller log from 50 (I thought it was 100!) to 200.
  • Added a link to character posts (for GMs and the player) to see the dice roller log, highlighting the rolls ±1 hour of the message.
  • Fixed where the GM "One Stop" player management page wouldn't let you rename a character.
  • Fixed a problem where once-per-day email notifications were not being sent.
  • Increased number of threads per page from 22 to 25, due to larger screen sizes and/or faster Internet speeds.  A small increment, but we'll monitor the impact and feedback.
  • Stopped the "multiple recipients" window locking up Chrome due to a closed dialogue box.
  • Unofficial lurkers (those not added to games as a lurker) now only get new message alerts if they can see the group.
  • Stopped moderators being added to the recipient list of a (single) rMail every time it was reported (they now are only added the first time).
  • Stopped the "Please do not try to imitate system messages" check being quite so aggressive.

Serifina:
The fixed headers broke (Chrome 19.0.1084.56, Win7).

Probably a caching issue, which can be fixed with a refresh.

I've renamed one of the CSS files in the hope that will assist (and avoid people having to force-refresh the site).

The header is not longer on top for me (firefox 13 on OS X.7.4) by about an inch.

Would that be linked to the header/footer scrolling changes?

Re: Version 1.8.53

I've noticed in the composition screen the "compose" button is floating out in nowhere land. It's aligned left/right where it's supposed to be, but it's underneath the text box, pushing the last 5 threads further down the page.

I'm using FireFox 13.0 with Windows Vista.

Also, I don't know if this is something I will get used to, or if it's just because I've been looking at D&D books all day, but I find the new font harder to read.

I'm getting the Compose button problem, but it moves to its correct spot when you click on it.

Character sheets have shrunk down to a very small font-size, making them hard to read.

(I'm using Firefox 13.0 as well.)

The compose tab is being strange like so, but it's always been odd for me.

In some of my gams it was INSIDE the text entry box, and in others, to its right... now it's way down below like so, even in this thread

Re: Version 1.8.53

I'm not sure it's a bug (the update mentioned font tweaks), but I can confirm it's also really small in FireFox. To the point that I almost can't read it.

I also just found a second issue while trying to confirm the first one: as a GM, when I'm on the Character Information screen, when I hover my mouse over the "view" button it moves from the side of the box to underneath the box, away from my mouse cursor. No matter what I do I can't click on it.

<edit>I think what is happening is that the button gets ever-so-slightly bigger, just enough that there's not enough room on the page and it wraps to the next line. This would be ok, but when I move the mouse to click on where it is, I'm no longer hovering, the button goes back to normal, and moves back to where my mouse used to be.

I've had some issues posting since the new build is in. The following issues were experienced in the Windows 7 operating environment, originally presenting in the Chrome browser though subsequently repeating themselves while using Internet Explorer.

1. Double Post, both posts having the same message number (where usually the message numbers are different).

2. Attempts to delete the latter post result in the following:

Sorry, but an error has occurred in deleting the message.
While trying to delete your message (number 118) the search for your message went astray and we didn't seek past 118

3. Attempts to edit the latter post result in an edit of the former post. Subsequent attempts to edit the now edited former post display the original text of the message.

OK The Entirety of RPOL has gone wide-screen for me the header is a clear inch below the top of the page and the same with the footer (Well an inch upwards) Which just looks wrong. Also when i view on my mobile this inch makes it conflict with the top line from the game forums.

I''m running firefox 13.0 n indows Vista and the Mobile issue is happening on Blackberry's browser which i don;t know the name of.

Edit: this problem only seems to occur with the Fixed header turned off. when it is on there is no issue. But i always prefer it off.

Visceri22 - Have you also done a force refresh?  If it still happens, do you have another browser?  I'd be interested to know where Safari has issues on a page such as http://www.wickham43.net/horizontalrule.html.

PushBarToOpen - Fixed footer and header?  And have you done a force refresh (control F5).  Also, are you zooming or increasing the font size?

On the mobile are you using m.rpol.net?

Re: Version 1.8.53

The page count at the bottom of games isn't displaying properly for me.

On the first page, it claims there are but two pages.  On page two, it acknowledges the existence of page three, and on page three, it acknowledges pages 1-4, and so one and so forth.  Really freaked me out when I clicked on a game that I knew had four pages before the update and it claimed there were only the first two.

I checked multiple games, so it isn't just one.  Did that to see if it was repeatable before reporting it here.

They should be right aligned underneath the rest of the post information, just like always (except with the extra link now), so not sure what you mean about the alignment.

I have to reduce my window size to around 920 pixels wide before the links start to affect the width of the column (and the site's designed for 1024 (or greater)).

Another player in a game I play in is saying that language groups that are posted by other players which they are not privy to are not showing any garbled text at all, just a blank dialogue box where those who know the language can see the text fine. I don't know what browser she's running it on or anything though. Just thought I'd bring it to your attention. I'll tell her to force refresh and see if it fixes it.

I'm using Firefox 13.0 with Windows Vista (in case it's relevant, I'm running at 1440x900 resolution). I've also noticed that the "Preview" and "Post Message" buttons seem to get bigger when I hover them, but they don't move to another line (they just shift the rest of the page down a couple of pixels).

The "compose" button seems to be back where it's supposed to be, so thanks for that!

Re: Version 1.8.53

Using Win Vista Ultimate SP2/IE 9.0.8 here.  Really digging the new font layouts.  Don't like all the icons and +/- boxes having moved... would love to shove them to the right and out of the way again.

  • Problem posts can force the screen wide -- see message 4, this thread.  When that happens, I have a vertical scrollbar in both the browser and the web page, but no horizontal scroll bar in either, so a lot of the text is hidden/inaccessable.  http://arcadia.net/Cruinne/RPoL/images/rpolscroll.png
    • Update to add: if I disable fixed headers/footers (that is, Disable fixed header: ON), I can get an in-page horizontal scroll bar, if I scroll all the way to the end of the page, but it's not very useful since it's not actually available while I'm reading anything but the last post or two.
    • This happens too in certain moderator pages  so I can't view the right-hand side of those.

  • Focus after load has been lost.  Example, when the Main Menu is loaded, the focus is not in the area between the header and footer and when a thread loads it is not in the area of the post.  This means spacebar/page-up/page-down/home/end/arrow keys no longer work for navigation once a page loads, and you must click on the scrollbar to navigate.
    • This is true even with fixed headers disabled -- cannot navigate the page using the keyboard (or my mouse buttons mapped to page-up/page-down).

Still getting used to the font myself.  Apparently it's better for reading...

What icons and ± boxes have moved?  None should have.

Horizontal scrolling - I get a scrollbar at the appropriate time on the same version of IE9 (though on Win 7).

Focus should always been on the scrollable area now (whereas previously I had to use some javascript trickery to focus on the area).  Page down, etc, should always work, I use it a lot.

All those problems sound a bit weird, possibly one of the CCS files hasn't been refreshed..?

I renamed a few more CSS files so that they old ones couldn't be used from cache anymore, that might have been what fixed it.

I don't know if it's by design or not, but the Preview and Post Message buttons (and similar buttons), kind of 'enlarge' when I mouse over them... it wouldn't bother me if it didn't slightly widen the box between my text entry and the formatting commands, and generally make the bottom half of my screen jumpy when going to click on them. I'd lov eit if we could get our old buttons back.. I like the rounded ones, to be sure, but I don't like their little dynamic resizing...

That's the EXACT problem I just had, that is fixed. Try forcing a refresh (likely CTRL+F5, but it varies). I noticed on the "character details" screen there's an extra horizontal line in the new version, so you can instantly tell if it works.

And thanks again, jase!

All those problems sound a bit weird, possibly one of the CCS files hasn't been refreshed..?

No change for me, still no default scroll. I use ie7 (not by choice! I do most of my browsing during lunch break at work.) I haven't had a chance yet to test with any boxes at home, but I'll report if I'm having trouble with those too.

What icons and ± boxes have moved?  None should have.

Jase, the - icons (for remove from sticky list) as well as the "closed" and "notice" icons used to be right-aligned in the row with the thread or forum link.  Now they're left aligned, in front of the text in IE9 on Win Vista:

jase:
Horizontal scrolling - I get a scrollbar at the appropriate time on the same version of IE9 (though on Win 7).

I don't in Vista, as in the screenshot I attached; it's still a problem today.  Clicking "all" on this thread causes it.   If it happens in rMail, I get a scrollbar.  I don't know what's different between rMail display vs. thread and moderator page displays.

jase:
Focus should always been on the scrollable area now (whereas previously I had to use some javascript trickery to focus on the area).  Page down, etc, should always work, I use it a lot.

It is in Win 7 IE9, but not under Windows Vista, IE9.  That's the only difference I can find between my laptop, where it works, and my desktop, where it doesn't when I use IE.  (Deep refreshing doesn't change it.)

I am beginning to think that the issue here is IE on non-Windows 7 installs.  Thank-you oh-so-much, MS!

I hate to do this to you, but yes.  I did all my testing of the beta site on my laptop, figuring Win Vista and Win 7 would not make any real difference to web page display if I was using the same version of IE on both.

Turns out, it makes a difference :-(   I'm very sorry about that.

Re: Version 1.8.53

I'm using Windows 7, 1920x1080 resolution, tried both Mozilla 8 and IE 9. Forced refreshed.

My only real concern right now is that on the Player's Wanted forum, when I zoom in (either text only or normal zoom), the Topic column that holds the game's/ad's name does not seem to expand quite like the others, and instead the letters get bigger and just start wrapping (more than expected) breaking the name into several lines. This is contrary to the other columns, which all appear to expand horizontally fine.

So, the other columns appear to expand their widths proportionately to their original un-zoomed state, while the Topic column shrinks in proportional width, kind of getting "shoved to the side."

I don't know whether it's the code or just my machine. But I would prefer if the Topic column holds more "weight" when zooming the page, so that it will expand proportionately or even more than other columns. The name is probably the most important part of that page, at least to me.

Someone please just let me know if I'm just being stupid though :p

EDIT: This happens for other pages with Topic too, but it is less noticeable to me on those, probably shorter Topic names.

Only IE users will really notice a difference in the font as the change from quirks to non-quirks mode made IE change the font (well, the font didn't change, the rendering of it did) rendering to "sub-pixel positioned ClearType to render text by using DirectWrite".  Or something like that.

All browsers should see a slight increase in the line height.

Yeah, unfortunately IE7 (released in 2006, superseded by IE8 in 2009) is very far out of date, and doesn't support modern HTML or CSS.

And even more unfortunately, a lot of businesses refuse to budge from it, leaving about 4% of the users out there a little fruited.

I noticed that even one site was implementing a 6.8% tax on users who insist on IE7 because, "This is necessary due to the amount of time required to make web pages appear correctly in IE7."  http://www.redorbit.com/news/t...b-of-ie7-with-a-tax/

Things may not lay out or position properly on the page.  See posts above regarding keyboard navigation (#55) and formatting links (#65) for some of the potential problems of using IE in compatibility mode.

Using it that way is your choice, of course, but I doubt jase would recommend it and if you have trouble with site functionality, the first step to solving it will be turning off compatibility mode.

Dolphin Browser HD 7.4.0

I've realized that what's happening is that "Mark all as read" is being crushed onto multiple lines due to lack of screen space. The header is also truncated to fit the original screen size, but horizontal scrolling is required to actually see some of the nav bar items.

Since Opera 11.62 (released at the end of March this year) you can use Control+F5 or Shift+F5 to force a refresh.

Make sure you're on a recent version of Opera (as mentioned, they were incredibly slow at supporting this) and then try one of the above tricks.

Changelog for Opera can be found here; http://www.opera.com/docs/changelogs/windows/1162/.  The above feature is listed there.

Re: Version 1.8.53

I'm pretty sure we've always had word wrap, unless you're editing a character sheet with fixed width on.  So no change there as far as I'm aware (though I know sometimes editing a post with a lot of long lines in it would stretch out the compose area, though it never should have (and I don't know if it still does)).

As for C+P losing the line breaks... I can replicae it here so I'll have to look into that one.  You can C+P into wordpad, then C+P from that into notepad, that seems to work ok for now as a workaround.  (Or use an alternate text editor, generally one that can handle files with just LF, rather than requiring CR+LF.)

I never doubted that it did!  What IE (or any browser) decides to do when ignoring/changing the original layout is completely up to them.  It's entirely possible to have a horizontal scrollbar in a textarea field - edit a character sheet with fixed width on and you'll see, but you'll also see how dang annoying it is when typing out normal messages like this.  Who wants a paragraph of text scrolling off into the distance on one line?  Not I!

Just figured this out myself, take the url of the page you want to link to, and add # followed by the message number you want to link to.  So if you wanted to link to message 12 the url you link to will look something like /message.cgi?ABunchOfStuff#12

The reason this is listed as unreliable is that if msg #12 moves to the next page, then msg #12 no longer exists on the page you're linking to, and so the link no longer goes to the message you specified.

The link to individual posts is only unreliable when new posts are added to the thread, and then only if enough posts are added to change the page number for that particular post.  If you link to a post in, say, a closed thread (as in, reference to a past IC event) or a Notice thread (assuming the GM isn't adding any further information to the notice), then there should be no problems with it.

That is, if I'm understanding how the whole thing is supposed to work.

It only works in threads of less than 1000 posts.  It can take longer to load for those on slow connections.  If only one person has inserted unbroken text or a huge image in only one post in the whole thread, the "All" display will be stretched crazy wide and make you scroll left and right to read.
