404 message

do we have an update thing going on?... Friday night around midnight my time, I was  locked out..404 message?.. I checked the link that say " is  RPOL DOWN "..it say …" no its you"

It happened last week? not sure if it was same day or not?

if its  a Maintenance thing?  we should have  an announcement on the board saying   what time?

I've had it happen twice, too.  I'm friends with a few fellow rpol-ers on social media sites, and they were locked out at the same time.  The main page was still visible and accessible (probably why rpol didn't come up as being down for donsr's verification site), but every forum and game gave the 404 error.  The first time it was only an issue for about 15 minutes or so.  This time, it was about an hour.

These outages are not the result of scheduled maintenance (which is always announced).

Instead they are more likely to be temporary server issues, which can not be predicted, and which are always fixed ASAP.

Re: 404 message

Server ran out of disk space, sorry about that!  It's actually all the log files causing issue so I'll look at a long-term solution.

Failing that we'll get more disk space, but to be honest the log files are a waste of space once they're a few days old so if I can just get them removed automatically then we won't have to worry about spending any extra on the server.

Do you need/would you consider taking someone on as an assistant?

I know server access is a big deal, but if you can't automated everyhing, maybe have someone with limited rights who can try and resolve issues like this when you aren't available.

there is a  thing on   the search engine "  is  RPOL down for everyone , But  just me ?"

It told me it was just me!...a couple other players in my best game talked about it on FB, so I knew it wasn't just me!

The main page kept working the whole time, so all of those "up or down/just me" sites could only see the site as functional. You just couldnt get anywhere but the landing page, with your games list.

Indeed!... I was on a post board years ago..great game ( there were others, but   I hated the site)… we would  crash  a few times a month and be  down for days at a time.

I  tried to get the DMs  there to move here.. but  he went to another site, and restarted  , his portion of the game. I go there  just to check posts.. the  Dice  roller is connected  to the posts..so...everyone sees the Dice   rolls  in yuou post, unless you poot in a thread made for dice  rolls?..  The site is slow when   getting there  and changing pages.. I love the game..hate the site, turned  down 4 offers  to join other  games, because  I  have flash backs of the old site there.

I have mentioned  before, in all my many, many years of gaming, this is the best site I have been  a Member of.

The Admins  here  keep   the  goofballs from ruining the site, JAse  and whomever  else helps  keep this place running  does a great job, which is why I don't  mine tossing a few  dollars into the  pot now  and then!

Really?

That's a little odd and separate from what I and my various RPOL folks got. I suppose the gribbly particulars might have led to it, and if your session expired, then you wouldn't have been able to log back in.

In case we got switched up, I didn't mean that I was able to log in once the problems started, I meant that I was already logged in and it just continued showing me my games list whenever I reloaded the main page. Clicking anything on the page gave me a 404 except for like a 120-second span in the middle of the night.

Yeah, it was just showing a snapshot of the main page and couldn't actually change anything else, so it preserved the state it was in when the logs started screwing everything up, I guess.

The 404 message still usually happens to me at least once per day. I've always assumed it was just a maintenance window or something. It used to be at like 1615 EST pretty reliably, but has become much more irregular since the server changeover.

Re: 404 message

It's odd that I haven't had any trouble hitting the main page.  I only have been getting the error when I try to dive into a game or forum.  It makes me think that it is an authentication issue, because I think that the main page can be painted (even with highlighting games' post count in red, I bet, since that's done on the browser from cookies) without actually checking authentication.  Hmmm.  Except that it does need to access your list of games you participate in; I can't believe that's kept in cookies.

Well, it was a thought.  It is definitely consistent, though.  I've even tried a shift-refresh on the main page, and it works fine, but then trying to open a forum or a game gives me the 404.

Re: 404 message

It has been happening for a couple days several times each day for stretches. Last time it happened this bad was disk space chewed up by log files, per message #14 in this thread but dunno if it's the same thing now. Same set up though, getting to the front page but not being able to reach the games themselves.

Re: 404 message

I noticed that, during last few weeks, various websites have similar issues that were really uncommon before, so I guess this depends on the much higher people working from home during last few weeks or months of quarantine restrictions, that are increasing a lot the traffic on the web.

Adding my name to the list of people with this issue. However I was chalking it up to the increase in people working from home or using the internet.

worst site in the world..takes  forever  for  screens to pop up..CS  are worthless caus eveeryone can see them( i just send  the DM  updated sheets in PMs   and keep it as my CS)

and? to find the game ...good luck... I have a link in my Favs  that takes me to the  game, or else it would takes  forver to find it again... now?  the DM and some other s love it...i assume, that once you get used to searching you butt off, you can find  what you want?...

bottom line..this is the place to be... so i hope they can  patch it up!

Re: 404 message

The easiest would be to get on Discord.

It seems to be a server problem though, to quote, "unreliable and convoluted".

Re: 404 message

Might I suggest that it be posted on Discord and the FB page.  I have a theory about it and that is just that a theory but with so many people staying at home over the world it would mean that more people are on the internet and more are logging into RPol.  Just more of a power surge that the servers, etc aren't used to.  Just a guess.... and I am getting the 404 too but never heard of the 504 until now.

Re: 404 message

Please do not send rMails.  We are aware of this problem, which affects everybody on the site, including us.

It may be server related, and therefore beyond our control, which means we have to wait for somebody to take a look at it.

Many websites are suffering similar issues, but a lot of hosting companies are currently running with skeleton staff only.

Re: 404 message

Server staff are fully aware of this issue and have been contacted. They're doing everything they can. There's a limit to what can be done and how fast it can get done, though, TL;DR.

It sucks, but hang in there.  It'll get fixed :)

Re: 404 message

Today I haven't been getting any 404s but I did get 502s on 2 or 3 separate logins. Idk what "502 Bad Gateway" means, it it sounds a little more ominous than "404 Page Not Found".

In reply to Ev-erron (msg # 94):

A 502 Bad Gateway Error is a general indicator that there's something wrong with a website's server communication.  Since it's just a generic error, it doesn't actually tell you the website's exact issue, just that there is "something wrong".

Re: 404 message

Small update on this;

I noticed some pages taking 8-10 seconds to load yesterday which in this instance was more helpful than pure error messages.  I believe I've tracked it down to SQL performance issues as everything came good after I restarted the database server.  I'll continue to keep an eye on it in the hope I can see the bottleneck starting to reduce performance again.  Unfortunately after the restart everything came good so I currently can't track down where the bottleneck was.

I did change a few performance settings, one was to change the database wait time from 28800 seconds (8 hours!) to 30 seconds.  That might lead to a slightly more helpful error message if the issue rears its ugly head again.

Re: 404 message

I get this sometimes via my VPN in California, US, too. I try again 30 seconds later and it works just fine. 404 can be a lot of things, and the error is not specific. To people that don't understand how inadequate server error messaging is, I would urge you to chill out and refresh the page.
