The next day Sara found herself outside on the curb. Dad and Mom were inside discussing the recent results, or what they thought the results were, of Sara's recent meeting with the Doctor.

And so Sara was outside. It was chilly, and a plastic bag from someone else's lawn was blowing down the street. Behind it, was Jimmy. He was running down the road hair tucked under his hat flapping, partially from him running and partially from the whipping wind.




"Shenanigans!" he yelled with hyper glee as he ran towards her.

"What?" Sara asked, distracted. She was in a somewhat atypically thoughtful mood ever since that talk.

"You know, Shenanigans!" he yelled again, stopping in front of Sara and breathing heavily. "Don't tell me you don't know what Shenanigans are? You know, Causin' a Ruckus!?" Jimmy explained, as if saying the new words would shed light on what he was about

"Where?" Sara peered at him, leaning forward.

"Where?!" Jimmy asked, looking confused."Boy you aren't from around here." Jimmy said.

"All that means is like, breaking stuff. Like it's time to go cause trouble." he explained, somewhat annoyed with Sara's lack of the colloquial language in these parts.

"Yeah, I'm not from here," Sara replies, annoyed now. "Okay, let's go."

"You bet you're not from around here." Jimmy said, somewhat put off by the fact that his good news about Shenanigans was overlooked. He had the look of disappointment and annoyance that comes with someone who told a good joke that wasn't appreciated."

Shenanigans are doing things that adults don't want you to do. Or that other kids don't want you to do. It could be sneaking around or breaking stuff. Anything to 'Cause a Ruckuss." Jimmy explained as he led Sara through the bushes that divided her yard from the neighbors yard. A few moments later they were walking past some other neighbor's backyard and down a small path deeper into the interior of the neighborhood and among homes that Sara hadn't seen before.

Then Jimmy crouched down into a squatting position among the bushes, clearly trying to hide.

"Get down and I'll show you how to sneak about." he told Sara

Sara rolled her eyes. Like she needed lessons. Still, she did as told for now. "Who lives here?" she whispered.

"Look." Jimmy pointed upward and into the yard. It was a tree house carefully constructed in a tree up high. The boards to the tree house were pristine and painted with some kind of stain that made them shiny, though you could still see the wooden grain in each panel. A ladder from the trunk of the tree led up to the tree house and kids voices could be heard inside.

Sara listened in; did any of the voices sound familiar?

Sara listened to the voices. She didn't recognize any of them and none of them sounded familiar. Then again, the tree house was high above and the voices came out muffled. It sounded like a conversation, like a....




"A secret plan!" Jimmy said to Sara in a harsh whisper. "That's what they're doing up there, hehehehehehe. But my plan is to make another secret plan that they don't know about. Do you know what my plan is, hehehehehehe."

Jimmy sifted through the dirt with one dirty hand and picked up a rock. He gave Sara a toothy grin as if begging her to guess what his plan was.

In lieu of a response, Sara picked up another rock, aimed and threw it at the wall of the tree house, only then turning to acknowledge Jimmy. "Is that all?"

Sara threw the rock with arm that might have been a cannon. The rock shot threw the air and a loud 'CRACK!!!' could be heard, a single wooden plank on the side of the tree house falling off and landing onto the grass.

"HAHAAH!" Jimmy laughed "Look at that! Look at it! It broke right off! That was awesome! HAHAHAAH!"

Jimmy laughed so hard he dropped the rock he was holding into the bushes. Then he searched around for it, pulling up a few brown leaves and crunchy pieces of autumn grass and then clearing a small area before grabbing a hold of the rock and holding it up the sunlight.

"Yeah!" He shouted and then looking over at Sara. "FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!"

The meaning was clear: It was time to bombard the tree house with rocks.

Sara's snark gave way to a grin as she enjoyed the damage she inflicted. She quickly picked up another rock and threw it... past the tree house. Annoyed at the miss, she went for it again and one more time after that.

The rocks bounced off roof and sides of the structure, one sailing wide and missing its mark.

"Watch this!" Jimmy shouted and he began his own assault of the tree house, picking up as many rocks as possible and throwing them with savage glee.

Big rocks, small rocks and even a few jagged ones flew through the air. Some landed softly on the roof. Other landed with a hard 'thump!' sound as they peppered the sides of the tree house. A single plank of wood cracked down the side and on the corner of the tree house, a splintering of wood, a thrown rocking taking a nearby chunk of wood with it.


OOC: Sara Rolls Dexterity + Athletics is she decides to continue, for each rock she wishes to throw.

Of course Sara was not going to quit now, though getting fired up about it does not seem to help her aim much. She grunts, annoyed at being unable to replicate her earlier success. "Stupid..." Taking a deep breath, she locates a big rock that somehow escaped both of their attentions until now and scores a solid hit. "Ha!"

The rocks flew about in what was quickly becoming a bombardment.

Suddenly, a door or window from a nearby house opened. An adults voice could be heard shouting out in the direction of the tree house. Or was it at Jimmy or Sara.

"What's all that racket!!?" The adult, who seemed angry said.

"Run, before they catch us!" Jimmy shouted at Sara and he tried to pull her arm in the direction of escape, deeper into the bushes and back into the coverage of autumn trees, whose leaves were now red, gold and brown.

Sara followed along, but could not help but look back.

Sara looked back and saw movement inside the interior of the tree house. Muffled voices of shouting and panic. The treehouse swayed with the movements of the kids inside, leaves falling from up high down to the ground and settled alongside the others.

Up ahead, Sara saw Jimmy ducked under a branch, converse sneakers stomping on piles of sticks and raked leaves and kicking through them as he ran. A dog barked from the side, a ferocious, deep bark as it ran out from its dog house, snapping at Sara as she cut through the neighbors  back yard

Sara barked back, but kept running.

Jimmy ran for a bit, out of breath before he ended up stopping behind a neighbor's swing set.

"I....think...we...got..away...." he panted as he sucked wind deep into his lungs.

The smell of someone's chimney smoke filled the air.  All around there were fallen autumn leaves. It looked like the neighbor--whomever it was--had recently put up some Halloween decorations in the backyard. A little skeleton sign that read 'Happy Halloween' , with a cartoon character on it was next to a large pumpkin.

"Easy," Sara proclaimed smugly, though she was pretty winded herself. She listened in, just in case someone was still chasing them. Or maybe someone would notice them here...

Sara listened in for a good long while, but didn't hear anything.



Jimmy put his ear on the ground to listen.

"This is the way the Indians do it. You know, like Geranimo, or like one of those Indian chiefs." he explained to Sara.

"I don't hear anything, do you think we go away?"

"I guess we did," Sara nodded, moving on. She looked at the house. "Do you know who lives here?"

Jimmy looked at the house. It was a two story structure and white. There was a shed in the backyard.

"Probably some old man." Jimmy said.

"Do you feel bad about what we did?" Jimmy asked Sara

"Huh?" Sara peered at the boy, an eyebrow raised. What kind of question was that? Besides, it was his idea. "Why would I? And who was in there, anyway?"

Gave Sara a crooked smile that was a bit mischievous.


"The tree house? Heheheehe" Jimmy snickered.

"Those are the kids from Rodeo drive where I live." Jimmy said. "They are all kinds of having fun in that tree house. Just like kids like to do. Awww, I've seen it many, many times before. It's such a cool tree house and we have tons of fun in it. But, I though it'd be fun to also try to have a little bit of joke on them. Ha!"

For the first time, Sara looked almost impressed. "And you think they'll never know?"

"Naaaw, it’ll be alright" Jimmy assured Sara

"We were just having fun. Besides, I don’t think they saw us.”

"I'm not worried," Sara shrugged. "I thought you'd be worried. Since they know you."

"Hahahaha" Jimmy laughed.

"That was radical. Really far out. Did you hear that 'crack!' noise? It sounded like a big fart when the rock hit the tree house. It was like boing! boing! boing!! Hahahah!”

"They must've been very scared," Sara grinned. "So, what next?"

Sara and Jimmy could hear a sudden voice shout out.

'Who's there!!' It was coming from the area of the tree house or at least its direction since they were far away now





"Hahahaha. That's Pesky. He sounds all mad from us throwing rocks. " Jimmy laughed.

"Next. I dunno. Want to go off and smoke a cigarette?”

"Ew," Sara cringes, that thought holding no appeal. Her face smoothens out immediately though. "Who's Pesky?"

"Hahahaha." Jimmy forced a laugh, enjoying Sara's disgust at the idea of smoking.

"Pesky?  Oh he's just one of the Rodeo kid drive kids. He's part of the club they have in that tree house. I'm one of them too. But sometimes I get bored doing all of they're investigations. Edith is the leader of the Club. It doesn't have a name. They're trying to investigate all of those kids that disappeared on Main Street. ”

"Say, aren't you from Main Street. Yeah, you live there. Don't you?"

"Mhm," Sara nods. "Sure I do. Some cop was investigating it too I guess." She pauses, frowning. "Is Edith a blonde?" There was some blonde girl acting all suspicious, before... though her memory was a little hazy now.

"Blonde? Ha! No. She's a ginger? You know what that means?" asked.

"It means she has red hair?" Sara kept frowning.

"That's right!" asked. Jimmy affirmed. "And that means that, even though she's smart, we can still make fun of her!" He proclaimed, clearly happy to find a weakness worth pointing out.

"Ehh, we'll probably end up hanging out with them soon anyway." He admitted. "There's not much to do on the block and most kids at school are losers, always following the boring rules. That was fun though, huh?"

He asked, referring to the rock throwing

"Sure," Sara nodded, her frown clearing. Jimmy wasn't completely worthless. Speaking of... "Hey, do you know a kid named Shawn?"

"Never met 'em, but I heard of him." Jimmy affirmed. "He lives on your side of the street, like on Main Street. Why you asking me?  You should know him. I'm mostly with the kids on Rodeo drive. The ones we threw rocks at! Hahehehe." He laughed.

"I don't know him. I heard he was some kind of movie star. Like trying to be one of the kids in Goonies. Probably more like a L-O-S-E-R star! Hahehehehehe."

So like what mom possibly wanted her to be? Even more reason not to do it... "That's what he is, for sure," Sara nodded again, smirking. "Loser star."

"Loser Star! Loser Star! Loser, Loser, Loser Star!!!" Jimmy shouted. "Come on, Come on! Say it with me! Say it with me! Hahaah!" Jimmy encouraged Sara to join in, jumping around and shouting 'Loser Star' with him.

"Shawn is a loser star!"

"Loser Star! Loser Star! Loser, Loser, Loser Star!!!" Jimmy shouted again, this time laughing.

"Oh hey, you know what I heard? I heard that he's really into like dolls. Isn't that weird? I heard he has like a favorite doll or something that he plays with. No really, it's true. I know because one day I was walking by his house and I heard him and his Dad fighting. It's weird. You know no one knows where his Mom went either. If you look at his house you'll never see her around."

"Hey, are you going Trick or Treating on Rodeo Drive, Main Street or all over?"

"I'll go all over," Sara grinned. A doll, huh? Something to look out for, she guessed.

"Dang it, Jimmy!"

Pesky bends over panting, hands on his knees.

"What are you doing?"

Kevin comes running around the corner just a couple of seconds after Pesky, just as out of breath but grinning. "Your tracks… were really easy to follow," he says as he tries to catch his breath.

Pesky's tone of voice, however, reminds him why they were tracking down the other kids in the first place, and he quickly grows more serious again as he starts to regain a more normal rate of breathing.

"Hey guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuyyyzzz!!!" Jimmy greeted Kevin and Pesky with drawn out tittering.

"Wasn't that fun! And cool! Hah! We got you! We got you so bad! We were throwing rocks too! Awesome and radical. Totally...what's that word that Bart uses? Tubular!!! Totally tubular!!!"

"Tracks?" Jimmy picked up his foot and examined the bottom of his red, converse sneaker. "Oh, man!!" He lamented.

Though miffed at Jimmy letting them get followed... Sara thought about it for a moment and decided she didn't care. She faced the boys nonchallantly. "Got you good! I bet you were scared."

Kevin rolls his eyes, and says, "Yeah, of course we were, you were throwing rocks at us! If all you wanted to do was scare us there is way more funny ways of doing that without trying to hurt us."

That was probably all he had initially intended to say, but instantly it's like he needs to fill in an example, "Like, last Halloween one guy pretended to be a Halloween decoration but then jumped up right as we got close. That was scary and funny, and didn't hurt anybody! Well, except my big brother scraped his hand when he jumped back and fell on the sidewalk, but… I guess it doesn't matter right now," he concludes kind of sheepishly, as he seems to once again realize he's being a motormouth.

Ignoring Jimmy, Pesky turns to the girl with him.

"I've seen you around.  I'm Peter - friends call me Pesky."

"You should be careful who you hang around," he said, turning to Jimmy.  "Some people just like to get into trouble for no reason."

Sara watched him, unimpressed, but perhaps a bit confused. Was he warning Jimmy about her, or her about Jimmy...? Either way, she didn't care for it. "I'm Sara," she introduced herself. "I don't remember you, though. Why do they call you pesky?" She'd have to remember that one.

Pesky glared at Jimmy for another moment before turning back to Sara, his glare softening.

"Peter Eskind.  Just got shortened to Pesky 'cause there's another kid named Peter in my class."

That seems to remind Kevin, and he looks back to Sara to introduce himself as well, "And I'm Kevin. I just moved here a few days ago."

"Eh.." Jimmy said, jumping a bit as if he couldn't sit still. "Great. Everyone knows everyone now, hehehe." He jibed.

"So, now that we're all familiar with each...." Then Jimmy stopped. He tilted his head. He was looking at Kevin.

"Waaaaait a second.  I know you." Jimmy said. "Aren't you that famous chess kid?"

Kevin looks surprised for just moment as he's recognized, but then nods quickly. "Yeah. Does that mean you play chess too?" he asks hopefully.

"Or was it one of those news stories where a reporter wanted to know if I was the next Bobby Fischer? All of those are kind of the same. Wish they'd talk about the games I played, or even asked me something different sometime," he adds this last statement as the thought occurs to him.

"Whatever..." Sara rolled her eyes exaggeratedly. She could care less about chess and the kids that play it. "So what were you doing up there when we scared you?"

"Wait!" Jimmy said to Sara, wanting to say something first. Jimmy looked around to see if anyone else knew what he and Kevin were talking about.


"I don't remember." Jimmy answered Kevin

"It could have been one of those things. Maybe an article or something. Maybe the Bobby article." Jimmy said.

"We can talk about the opening move you like to play. I know something about chess, heheheh" Jimmy said.

"But first I want to do this" Jimmy extended his hand to Sara, Kevin and Pesky. And then, extended the index finger of his hand.

"Pull my finger." He said.

"Jesus, Jimmy, grow up.  This is serious," he says, ignoring Jimmy's finger.

He turns to address Sara.  "We were talking about our investigation."  He looks around, lowering his voice slightly.  "We're trying to find out what's going on around here - why kids keep going missing."

Kevin grins to Jimmy, either happy that he's found someone who knows a bit about chess or maybe sharing his sense of humour, but nods in agreement with Pesky. To Sara, he adds, "We think we have a suspect, too."

Just then Gary came walking up, panting like he'd been running for a while and with a concerned look on his face.



"Guys....*pant*...where'd you....*breath*...go? I was looking for...*pant*....you all." He said to Kevin and Pesky.

And then to Sara. "I'm...*breath*....Gary." He hunched over both knees, breathing heavily.

"Your friend?" Sara asked no one in particular as Gary came up. Not waiting for the answer, she turned towards Kevin. "So who's the suspect?" the girl asked, lowering her voice conspiratorily.

Kevin looks back to Gary, and reaches out a hand for his shoulder in case he needs support, and says, "Sorry, I thought you'd see the tracks too!"

He looks back to Sara then, and says, "What do you know about Ralph's 'mom'?" The quotation marks are practically in his tone of voice, and he wrinkles his nose just a tiny bit even mentioning her.

Who? Did she even know a Ralph? But rather than expose her ignorance, Sara parried with a question: "She's really a monster, isn't she?"

Kevin gives a serious nod, not even seeming to realize he's been deflected, "I think so. Ralph says he used to have a different mom, and I think this new one's doing something to mess with his memories. And she didn't talk like a human. She said things that didn't make any sense at all, not even grown-up-sense. And Ralph warned us not to eat any of her food, and told us to get out of there as soon as we started talking about the missing kids in front of her."

After giving this evidence, he concludes, "I think she's an alien. Aliens can mess with people's memories and they abduct people all the time! But she might just be some crazy lady, or we might be wrong about her at all, so we gotta get proof."

OOC: Sorry about the long delay there, RL hit me hard this week.

"Wait, what did she say?" Sara asked, suddenly genuinely curious.

Kevin wrinkles his nose, and says, "She didn't even know the difference between chocolate milk and hot chocolate, saying it was her old-person memory when she mixed it up, and she thought that kids get more homework if there weren't as many kids in class. We didn't talk to her much longer than that, because as soon as we started talking about the missing kids, Ralph started doing that thing you see kidnap victims do in the movies behind their kidnappers' back."

Then he imitates, mouthing 'Get out of here!'

"Then we all left, so we don't really know what's going on yet. But I still think she's an alien, and I promised to help Ralph find his real mom. So, anything you know about her or Ralph would be a big help."

"An alien" Gary repeated, saying the word out loud that everyone was probably thinking.

"We've got an alien neighbor. A neighbor, who is probably an alien, old-woman. That's..." He ran his hand through his hair, taking in Kevin's report and more than anything else, his conclusion.

"..unbelievable." Gary finished. "And to think, we've been living here this whole time. Who knew that was going on over there on Main Street."

"I just know there are monsters here," Sara shrugged. "Hey, she doesn't have tattoos, does she?" Probably not, the tattooed lady didn't look old...

She then looked at Gary. "Are you from Main Street?"

Kevin thinks, and then shakes his head quickly, "No, no tattoos, but she did have really big glasses!" Then, he seems to catch up with what she said before the question, looking to Sara with wide eyes, "Wait, other monsters? What other monsters?"

"Oh, you know, like the wolf man?" Sara said, as casually as she could. "I also heard about a monster clown." Saying that, she glanced at Jimmy, searching for any sign of recognition.

"Main Street!?" Gary said as if that were a shocking question. "No way! I heard that Main Street is really where the bad stuff is going on. There's no way my Mom would let me be on Main Street."


"Monsters...." Gary said, reflecting on what Sara and Kevin were saying.

Kevin's eyes widen a bit again, "A werewolf? Penelope told us about the evil clown, but she didn't say anything about a werewolf! Do you know who it is?"

"Not a werewolf, a wolf man," Sara clarified with a frown. "He was called Griffix."

Kevin looks a bit puzzled for a moment, "Oh, I thought they were the same thing. But I never saw Wolf Man, just Teen Wolf."

He reaches back for his notepad, before remembering that Edith still has it. "Does Griffix live on Main Street?"

"Wolf man!" Jimmy echoed. "That's my costume for Halloween tomorrow! Hehehe!"

"But seriously, you're joking" Jimmy said, looking at Sara and then back to Kevin to make sure what they were talking about was real

Uh, did he live on Main Street...? "He showed up there, anyway. Pretty sure he lived... somewhere else," she added in a spooky voice.

Kevin looks to Jimmy, and says, "No, I'm not joking. I mean, it might just be someone really hairy, or in a costume like on Scooby Doo, but you always got to check things like that out. My dad's first newspaper article was about an old woman who thought she was haunted. The police just laughed at her but my dad figured out it was a homeless guy living in her attic."

"And anyway, it could be real. You know how grownups are, they could look right at a real monster and refuse to believe it! My teacher last year said that scientists refused to believe that the duckbill platypus was real for a really long time, just like they do now with Bigfoot. I bet there are lots of things out there they say are fake and aren't!"

He says all this very fast, excited by the topic, but this time he doesn't seem to realize he's getting carried away.

"Ha! You're Dad is like, the editor or something? Like J. Jonah Jameson in Spiderman! Or like Clark Kent before he becomes Superman. That's pretty cool." Jimmy said, getting a little lost in the beginning of Kevin's statement about his Dad.

Jimmy listened to the rest of what Kevin said.

"Big foot probably exists. And also don't forget about that guy who was from like, England. My Mom told me that he was a famous singer, like with a few other guys from England, or maybe one was with us, you know, Americans. Anyway, my Mom said that this English guy who played the guitar I think. Yeah, the guitar. He's actually a clone. And the real guy, I think his name is 'Paul' is dead. So if you play one of the records backwards, it says 'Paul is dead.' But like, all the adults believe that 'Paul' is alive. But its all a lie, and the real 'Paul' guy from England that plays the guitar is dead. So its true." Jimmy reasoned, looking confident in his assessment that things weren't what people said that they were or how they appeared.

Kevin grins to Jimmy, and says, "Yeah, more like Clark Kent. He's an investigative reporter."

Then, after the story Jimmy tells, he says, "Wow, I haven't heard that one! But yeah, just like that! Grown-ups won't believe anything that isn't normal. Most of them won't even look into it! So, it's up to us!"

He's smiling, happy and energetic in this discussion.

OOC: Sorry for the delay! Been a bad week for my voice.

"Soooo..." Gary starting, indicating he was going to ask a question. "What are we gonna do now?" Gary asked, differing to everyone else.

"Aw, I dunno." Jimmy said, kicking a bit of dust up, and leaves with one of his Converse sneakers.

"This is pretty gay though. You know? I'm kind of getting bored." He admitted. Then he looked around at both Sara and Kevin.

"What?" He asked. "You don't know what that means?" Then, as if remembering that Kevin and Sara weren't from the area, at least not originally, he said.

"It means stupid. You know, gay. Like, this is really gay that we're standing out here in the cold and he we don't know what to do about all of this."

Kevin frowns to Jimmy, and says, "I don't think that's what gay means. Haven't you ever watched Three's Company?"

Shrugging, he looks thoughtful for a second and then says, "Well, we don't know where the Wolfman lives, so I think we should still check out Ralph's mom first. We still need to spy on her house, like we were talking about before someone started throwing rocks at us, to try to get evidence and to talk to Ralph when his mom's not around."

Jimmy gave a little mischievous laugh when Kevin mentioned the word 'gay' and when Kevin mentioned that rocks had been thrown.



"That's a good idea." Gary said to Kevin.

"Well, maybe we should think about doing that as soon as possible." Gary added.

Then he looked at Jimmy for about three seconds. Then he looked at Sara. And then he looked at Kevin.

The group fell silent. Gary started up his looking again, as if he was hoping someone might plan what the group would do next.

Catching Gary's look, Sara looked at Kevin in turn. "Well, what are we waiting for? Where does she live?"

Kevin nods quickly, and says, "She lives on Main Street." He gives the address, and then adds, "Yeah, let's go! We can pretend to be playing if anybody asks us," he adds.

"Football! Football BLAhhhhhhH!!" Jimmy said, jumping in the air with delight

"Alright, Alright." Gary said, agreeing to go, but really sounded more like a complaint about how Jimmy was jumping around frenetically.

"Let's follow Kevin!" Gary suggested. "He knows the way!"

Kevin nods quickly and starts to lead the way. He acts confident in his ability to lead the way, even though he went via the streets on his bike last time.
