Shawn: The Middle of the Night

Shawn woke up on the coach to the faint sound of tapping. It was coming from the basement window, somewhere outside. He took a second to gather his bearings. Tyrone and Chris were still sleeping soundly on the coach. The television screen was no longer playing Transformers, but was filled with pixelated salt and pepper dots and static sound. That was the only sound, save for the tapping. The party upstairs, it seemed, had finished.

Shawn: The Middle of the Night

Shawn groggily looked around, wondering if he was dreaming at first. But as he managed to place himself in time and space, it became clear that the tapping was real and still happening. As quietly as possible, he tried to slip off of the couch and move towards the basement window to see what was going on.

Shawn: The Middle of the Night

The tapping became irregular, intermediate. Shawn could see through the half window it was a kid's shoe, toe point tapping the window gently amid the darkness as if trying to get someone's attention. Suddenly, the shoe disappeared, and seconds later a shuffling sound was heard.

Leonard's face appeared. He was outside.

"I thought you might be in the basement."
Leonard spoke through the half basement window with a muffled voice.

"Wow. What a party you must have had last night."
He said, this time whispering. "I snuck out to tell you something." As if realizing he was doing something he shouldn't be, he followed up with.

"Don't tell anyone I snuck out."

He seemed better after last night's adventure. Cleaner, a change of clothing. No vomit. Even though he was in the darkness, his face wasn't as pale as when Shawn last saw him.

Shawn: The Middle of the Night

Shawn felt relieved to see a friendly face at the window - of all the possible things that could be tapping at the basement window in the middle of the night, Leonard was one of the best. "Don't worry, I'll keep it a secret." He whispered as well, not wanting to wake anyone else up. "What did you need to tell me?"
