As Niall moved past Malus, the magic-user moved as close to the wall as he could to give him easier egress. He then turned to look back the way they’d come to keep a watch in case anything, or anyone, tried to approach from their rear.

Max cleaves one of the fat rats and it's blood sprays on the dank wall.

Clay and Niall, go ahead and make your attack rolls. To facilitate speed, the rats have an AC of 7 (With a THAC0 of 19 you hit them on a roll of 12 or higher) and 2hp. If you kill them go ahead and describe how.

Enigma, are you doing anything?

Enigma waves her staff ineffectively but Niall and Clay kills a rat each. The remaining rat before Max is frenzied and doesn't notice it's now alone. It jumps up at Max, biting hard into his leg (2 damage and roll 1d20 to see if there's a chance to contract disease).

To facilitate speed I think we'll dispense with declarations for movement and spells. Go ahead and act, round 3! One more person can stand on the walkway beside Max and another one in the water.

The silence after the short battle is soon broken by the quiet gurgle from the canal and your short breathing. To the south the walkway ends in a wall and water disappears into the mouth of an underground tunnel. In the tunnel to the east you can see it continue as far as you can see by the flickering torchlight and 20' ahead there's also an opening to the south. Max remembers that for the briefest of moments he saw another flickering light disappearing by the far end of the eastern tunnel, but it is now dark an silent.

First combat done! That'll net you a total of 20 experience points to divide between the five of you. You can keep track of your own points if you wish but I'm going to keep track of experience in the journal thread as well.

Malus stepped forward, pulling out his waterskin and ran some of the clean water over the wound to flush it out. He had read a treatise on infection written by a scholar from Waterdeep in the library. “You need to head back, Max? Everyone, what do you think? We could see to the wound, perhaps hire some additional help. This seems like it goes beyond the small remittance for killing a few rats- though we have done that we could truthfully say. Rats dead, cellar clear. If further investigation is required, that’d be a separate contract, no?

It should be, yes, we don't know what risks this other matter entails, and we should get a separate contract to account for that he said. It's the right thing to do. We also need to find a priest to join us.

Another turn passes as you huddle around Max by the tunnel entrance to the east to talk about how to move forward. When you turn around looking at the passage you came through from the cellar you notice a faint flickering light from the watery tunnel to the east.

I'll put the timekeeping table here at the bottom instead.

A shape carrying a torch rounds the corner and steps up from the shallow water on to the walkway. It is a dirty, lanky man with a scraggly beard and obviously horrible hygiene. He calls back to someone. "Well well Shank, you were right. They're mostly all here, ripe for the plucking. Looks like it's only the cleric and the elf missing." He turns towards you, blocking the plank bridge to the passageway where you came from. "Now, if you don't mind, stand still cause I've a blade with your name on it." He walks towards you, short sword raised and another figure, apparantly Shank, shorter but equally dirty rounds the corner after him, carrying a short sword.

Roll for initiative, they weren't surprised. I rolled a 2. If you beat that go ahead and act. They have an AC of 6, meaning a hit on 13 or higher with THAC0 19.

Malus moves to keep the armored form of Niall between him and the thugs, and as he does so he begins to speak low in the language of Auld Wyrmish. The words form the basis for an incantation, drawn from the teachings of the ancient Fae. As he finishes, arcane energy suffuses the air around the two criminals, creating a somnolent effect.

Enigma gasps audibly, her cool all but vanishing.  After taking very quick and decisive stock of the situation, the Magess invokes a word of power at the two buffoons.

Not sure if Game Master, or Player, is asked to roll for success in this case, as Mage abilities function like Thief Skills.

What's your target? One of the men or the more general 2d8 HD option? Range is 240' so you'll target pretty much everyone in the sewer with the second option.

Your chance of success is 20% on a d100 if I read the table correct so go ahead and roll.
