Character creation

Complete the “Creating A Character: Advanced Method” section of Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy Player’s Tome by Necrotic Gnome with game-specific details as noted below.

Step 1: Roll ability scores
Roll 3d6 down the line using the Rpol dice roller. You may reroll if you have an 8 or below in every score or if you have no ability of 14 or higher.

Step 2: Choose a race from the following:
  • Dwarf
  • Elf
  • Gnome
  • Half-elf
  • Half-orc
  • Halfling
  • Human. Humans use the optional Racial abilities (+1 to CHA and CON, roll hit points twice and take the best roll, win tied initiatives and get a +1 bonus to loyalty/morale

Step 3: Choose a class
Any class from Classic, Advanced or the Carcass Crawler zines are available

Step 4: Adjust ability scores

Step 5: Note ability score modifiers

Step 6: Note attack values

Step 7: Note saving throws and class/race abilities

Step 8: Roll hit points
Roll hit points using the Rpol dice roller, rerolling 1's

Step 9: Choose alignment
Choose an alignment, if you want to. It will not feature a lot in the game.

Step 10: Note known languages
There are no alignment languages or secret class languages. Everyone knows Common and their racial language if applicable. Thieves also know Thieves Cant. Available languages are:
  • Alzhedo
  • Dethek (dwarvish)
  • Espruar (elvish)
  • Undercommon
  • Chondathan
  • Illuskan
  • Auld Wyrmish (draconic)
  • Darakthan (orcish)
  • Gnim (gnomish)
  • Sylvan (fey)
  • Yipyak (kobolds)

Step 11: Buy equipment

Step 12: Note armor class

Step 13: Note level 1 and XP 0

Step 14: Roll for Secondary skill

Optional character rules

The following optional rules from the Advanced Tome are used.

Combat
  • Arcane casters can use staffs
  • Attacking with two weapons
  • Charging into melee
  • Parrying

Magic
  • Spell books: Number of spells determined by INT. Player chooses spells.
  • Spell books: No limit number of spells in spellbook, chance to copy depend on INT, cannot copy spells of higher level

Weapon Proficiency
  • Initial weapon proficiencies: 4 for martial classes, 3 for semi-martial and 1 for non-martial
  • Every time a characters THAC0 improves they gain a new weapon proficiency
  • Non-proficient attacks
  • Weapon Specialization
