Our Heros
Feel free to post here guys, talk amongst yourselves and decide what you want to play, relationships, etc. There will be a mix of court and war, so no character concept is useless. All of the Clans are available (Including the minor Clans) with the exception of the spider, who are beyond the wall right now. We have a player who is new to L5R, so expect lots of questions (and free to ask as many as you want.) Try to decide on a Clan to play, its okay if theres more than 1, but no more than 3 if possibly (unless you'd like to play a hostage, traitor, etc) Ronin are available. For character creation all 4th edition books are open, although i will be banning the "sage" advantage, i find it to be rather annoying flavor wise.
Base creation rules, plus 50 EXP. If you have anything special you want to do, run it past me, im pretty flexible.

Howdy folks!  I'm fairly open, it really depends on what everyone else is interested in, and what kind of stories we want to tell.  So what's everyone looking at in terms of concepts?  I'd love to build mine around other players, as I think it adds a bit of realism, other than us simply trusting one another due to "that PC glow".

Hiyas all :)

Any strong thoughts on Clans (for or against)?

My only other L5R character was a Lion Bushi, so, it'd be nice to try something different this time around.

Some initial thoughts for me:

1.) A Tsuruchi Shugenja. the idea of a Bounty-Hunter/Priest sort is rather fun. I'm not even sure what, if any, precedent or Schools would favor such a thing... but the idea sounds fun!

2.) A Crane or Scorpion Shugenja/Courtier sort perhaps. A lot like Petyr Baelish from Game of Thrones (the show, I've yet to delve the novels). Could just as easily take a Minor Clan for added flavor.

3.) A Tsuruchi Bounty Hunter -- The Classic broke-my-sword and embraced the bow type.

Just some INITIAL off the cuff of my sleeve ideas. I'm willing to bend and fill niches, and even go back to a classic Bushi if that's what we need/want!

I am very open to clan also.

I tend to play bushi most often, but I would be willing Shugenja or Courtier to try out something new.

I have always wanted to play a army commander type character and it seems like it would fit this game well. So Crab Kaiu or Lion Ikoma bushi is my starting point but I could end up with something much different.

Hi. I'm the total newb referred to above. I've played before, just not this system. :)

In discussion with the GM it looks like my character tastes and experience run to Courtiers. I'll read the wiki to see which Clan is most suitable, but my Courtier will operate mostly through building alliances and reinforcing the efforts of others.

If you like the "building alliances and friends" aspect the crane are a good choice to look at, or the unicorn ide

As for bushi vs courtier, there will be opportunities for both, so feel free to have a mix in the group. (Conversley, if every one ends up wanting one path or another, I can taylor the game to that)

So let's take this in order:

@Deacon
I'm a huge fan of the Tsuruchi personally, so I like your train of thought!  The Wasp Code serves as a great foil to Bushido, so it's always fun to play them.  That said, Tsuruchi don't really have much of a shugenja presence at all.  Those absolute few who do display the ability to commune with the Kami are no doubt trained in one of the three(!) schools that the Mantis have.

The Yoritomo have a school, the Moshi have one, and the Kitsune have one as well.  That said, none of them lend themselves *super* well to the idea of a bounty hunter, except perhaps Kitsune?  Being able to talk with animals/their skills with tracking could actually be quite handy.  So perhaps some intermarriage with your character's parents there to explain it?

A 'basic' archer would also be quite fun!  So really, entirely your call there mate!

@Mysterious
An army commander type samurai really does, as you say, mean Crab or Lion, generally speaking.  Now you could always play something different to surprise everyone, but yes, those are the big two that come to mind anytime I think mass battles.  Personally I prefer Crab, but that's just me.  On a slightly related note... Kaiu = <3 they're just so much fun!

@Mickey
Every clan has courtiers, and they all do a great job, albeit in their own way.  Don't be fooled into thinking that only the Scorpion/Crane do courtiers well.  My personal favorite are from the Crab.  Read up on the Yasuki, they're just far too fun!

----

As I see it, we potentially have a Crab or Lion and a Mantis.  At first glance Crab/Mantis seems like an easy pairing as the two clans stem from the same place and have always been extremely close.

Now, fair warning, having Crab in the mix means that we can expect the Shadowlands to be a part of whatever story we eventually end up telling.  Not that they'd dominate it, but it will no doubt come up.  Personally I'm quite alright with it, it's not L5R if the Shadowlands doesn't pop up everyone now and again, but I wanted to make sure everyone realized the potential implications is all.

Hey guys,

Still in the newer side of L5R, I will likely try to play a character involved with the less savory aspects of warfare, potentially somebody involved with Ninja if permitted.

Precedent exists! I'm really liking this idea, provided it's not a conflict for anyone else?

Surely you kid my friend, or perhaps you've had too much sake?  Everyone knows there's no such thing as Ninja!  As an aside, if you're trying to play a 'ninja', then that means you're a Scorpion, period.  As long as you're prepared to have literally nobody else trust you, and are ok with that, then more power to you!

However if you're looking to deal with criminals and the underbelly of Rokugan, that's another story entirely!  Take a look at the Tortoise clan if that's the case, they're another clan that's just absolutely amazing.

If you're interested in hit and run guerrilla warfare type stuff, then take a look at the Daidoji, that's very much their shtick.  That and they'd fit in nicely with the Crab/Mantis thing we've got going on.  They're literally the only Crane that the Crab respect, and the family/clan have become very close over the years.

@Deacon
Well, yes... and no.  Thankfully I have my copy of the book (Magic of Rokugan is for an older edition), so let me tell you what it says!  "This is less a style of magic than an application of it.... This scruffy ronin and his two students passed on a style of investigation that relied heavily upon the kami, allowing the Wasp to track their prey with great speed and accuracy."

So it's more how the magic is used, as opposed to them doing something entirely new (like the Agasha for example).  My advice would be then to take one of the Mantis schools as a base and go from there, simply focusing your attention of investigation magic.  Again, I think the Kitsune might be a good fit.  Earth has some cool tracking magic, and then it's fairly easy to branch out into some water/air magic to help out as well.  And since they're a part of the Mantis, you could easily be trained in their school, just employing the magic in a very Tsuruchi manner.

Oh and a caveat, just remember, whatever the kami say won't hold up in court.  But Rokugani court is a travesty of justice to begin with, so eh?

If you want to play a shinobi you aren't only limited to the scorpion. They certainly do it best, but almost all clans have a spy network of some kind, but it is a grave insult to mention it in public.

Sweet, saved me some time ;-)

That makes things even easier, no need to research any off-the wall Schools. Straight up MANTIS training. I definitely looked at the Kitsune school on the wiki earlier (surfing from my phone), and that does sound like an interesting angle! IIRC the other schools were more weather/thunder based... so, I think it may be the winner.

I figure all clans have army commanders. It's just the Lion and Crab have the most famous ones. I am totally fine with playing a commander from a different clan.

@Ninja stuffs
Every clan has a spy network, certainly.  Shoot, you could argue that most courtier classes can and do fulfill the role.  But if he's looking for something with actual mechanics for a sneaky-stabby types, it's hands down the Scorpion.  I mean the Scorpion literally cultivated the myth of the ninja (go read up on them, it's hillarious, they're not what you think) and actively train the closest thing to ninja as we think of them (Shosuro Infiltrators and Soshi Shugenja).  But again, there are ways to do a 'sneaky' character, albeit with other clans.  Again, the Tortoise clan and the Daidoji family come to mind as prime examples.

@Deacon
Glad to be of service sir!  Been playing L5R for a long time, it's hands down one of my favorite systems/settings, so I'm just glad to pass a little bit of that on!

@Mysterious
Oh I absolutely agree!  They're the ones who actively train the most/see the most conflict (Crab, hands down), so it only makes sense!  It honestly depends on what you want to do mate/what you have envisioned for your character.  However it seems like we have a Mantis, so a Crab would fit nicely, but you by no means must play one.  Again, I'm just partial to the Kaiu, because they're bloody awesome.

Heya all, new arrival here.

Regarding characters..

@More ninja stuff
Another example for a 'ninja' style character would be the Hiruma scouts.  So really mate, it all depends on the flavor you're looking for, and of course, what fits in best with the group.

@Brother
A soft-hearted Lion bushi?  O.o;;  Sounds like a very interesting character mate!

So it sounds like we're all over the place in terms of clans here folks.  Correct me if I'm wrong, we need to narrow it down to 3 at most, yes?  We also need to make sure that they all fit together relatively well/are all on the same side(ish), because correct me if I'm wrong, there's some Clan War style conflict brewing.  So if we've got 6 samurai all from different clan, then that'll get messy quick.
