Court of Akodo Mei, 7th day of the month of the Hare
The court chancellor, Hosokawa Buge, lazily finished reciting the two hundred and thirty seven matsu who had perished during the recent assault on Omeki-Mura, a scorpion holding which now belonged to the lion. "-and as you can see my lord, we've more than made up our losses in the rice we've seized, which at my count should provide the remaining troops, all six hundred and seventy three of them, with plenty to eat for the rest of the campaign. Not to mention the enormous blow struck against the scorpion." Akodo Mei simply nodded, and continued to study the samurai in front of her. To Ikoma Daichi the air seemed unusually still, the usually crowded courtroom now consisted only of himself, a rather ravishing looking Akodo Mei, a bored chancellor, and a few other lion samurai. He felt a cough brewing in his chest, which he quickly suppressed lest he betray his ON. It would not do to lose face in front of a blood relative of his champion, especially after the Ikoma Daimyo personally recommended him as the troops Omoidasu. After many more minutes of silence Akodo Mei spoke. "You will all be making the journey to Mura Sabishi Toshi. There is currently a kobune full of mantis making the journey there to meet you with a crate. You are to make sure it reaches a merchant by the name of Sai, unopened. He will be somewhere in the city, protected by a ronin we have payed to watch him. The mantis will assist you in the city. It is imperative that the crate be unopened. To disregard this would bring much shame upon yourselves, and if the mantis could feel shame, them aswell." Mei stopped, and glanced at the chancellor, who continued for her. "The poor harvest is being felt throughout lion lands, especially now that the unicorn are threatening to withdraw their trade with us due to our war with the scorpion. It would be very beneficial for us if the Crane could promise support, and as such you will be working to that end as much as possible, without jeopardizing your primary concern. Your words will have the weight of our lords seal upon them, as you act in her name. You are authorized to make agreements on Akodo Mei-sama's behalf, and i needn't warn you of the consequences should this privilege be abused. Now, questions?"

Ikoma Daichi looks around, then bows deeply. "For my part, esteemed Chancellor-sama, I have no questions. The command issued by the honored Akodo-sama is clear and concise...of course." He straightens, places his hands on his hips and speaks so that his voice rings out through the court chamber.

"For the glory and honor of the Lion and the Empire, we go forth as we are commanded, righteous in our cause! And may the Fortunes see fit to smile upon us, the glorious light of the Celestial Heavens guiding our way!"

A look of smug satisfaction on his face, Daichi bows once more, then steps back...

...but not before casting a brief, but appreciative glance at Akodo Mei.

Benten's Smile, but she's a damned fine looking woman. Damned fine.

Akodo Mei nods, as though the Ikoma's statement was obvious. "And the rest of you," she gestured to the others gathered, "you also understand what is to be done, and how?"

Matsu wasn't sure why she was there or why such an important task was among others left for someone like her, moreover she wasn't really sure about the how and to some extent the what, but then again that wasn't all that odd for her. Yuuko made a slight nod and bowed in acknowledgement to their orders, she would figure things out over time, as she always did, or so she hoped...

Ikoma Ekei stood in the room as straight as an arrow watching and listing. The talk of war make his sword hand itch and for a brief moment he imagined himself on the battlefield fighting the scorpion. They were not an honorable foe, but that did make the victory that much sweeter.

Ekei did have questions but he waited for those with greater honor to speak first. When he felt it waited long enough, he spoke with in a clear an forceful tone.

"What is the name of the kobune or our mantis contact we must meet?"

After hearing the answer he had another question.

"If we come across scorpion in our travels, do we have standing orders?"

Hosokawa Buge glanced at the lion general, and when she nodded, he spoke; "We are at war with the scorpion, but they are still descendant from a Kami. Afford them the courtesy as so deserves an enemy. You have standing permission to duel to the death with any scorpion as you see fit."

Daichi looks at Ekei as he speaks, listens to the answers he's given, then turns his attention back to the Akodo general...making sure his on is properly composed into one of nothing but respect.

"Akodo-sama," he says, "if I may ask...your edicts have been clear regarding the Mantis, the esteemed Crane and the honored Scorpion. Of course, Mura Sabishii Toshi is a crossroads, a hub for much trade and commerce. There are likely to be samurai from at least some of the other clans there...the Crab and Phoenix in particular. We shall, of course, treat members of these Great Clans with the respect they are due. Is that sufficient, or should we seek opportunities to gain closer relations with them, as well?" He pauses, then adds, "Understanding, of course, that our primary duty remains the delivery to the merchant."

Akodo Jubei kept his visage stoic during the briefing, only nodding once when Akodo Mei asked if they understood their mission.

Under his facade of calm though, his heart was soaring.
Pursuing a mission of diplomacy with the crane clan was a most noble assignment, securing relations with them would be a step to resolving this civil war swiftly and ensure that the suffering people are shielded from the worst of the ravages of war.

Though this was stated to be but their secondary mission and Jubei would certainly not forget that, in his mind this secondary assignment was of equal importance and he would treat it as such. He silently vowed to do all in his power to see it through, for the good of the Lion Clan and Rokugan itself.

A stack of scrolls was distributed, one to each soul present. "travelling papers," explained the chancellor, "enough to get you to Mura Sabishi Toshi and back without any trouble. you will gather your things and inform your families tonight. Tomorrow, an hour after noon, you will set out together. A pony will be provided to carry anything you may need. Is there anything else you require from us, my honoured charges? It is my duty to see to it that you are supplied adequately." As the chancellor listed off the mundane supplies provided, Akodo Mei left without a word, her footsteps silent in the large room.

Daichi nods. Clearly, their diplomatic efforts are to be focused on the Crane. Not an easy task...the Children of Doji were subtle and insidious, wrapping their political opponents in webs of honeyed words, offering favors that seemed advantageous when accepted, but inevitably ended up with the recipient somehow owing more than they were given. The Crab were so much easier to deal with.

Still...the omoidasu bows as he accepts the scrolls, then straightens and proclaims, "We shall not tire or fail in this task!" Gesturing at the other Lion who he'll accompany, he says, "My cousins all carry the glorious lineage of their esteemed ancestors, who will guide us with the wisdom gained through their years of life, and their many more years of honored death! Would that we should die with as much honor, and be judged worthy to join them in the blessed afterlife of Yomi!"

With another flourish and a deep bow, he steps back and prepares to depart.

Two obvious options remained for their course; the fastest course was to pass into the imperial provinces, rather closely, and head straight to "Edge -water Village", a small imperial holding where they could charter a ship to their destination. However, since the death of the imperial family, the imperial provinces were in turmoil, with no clan willing to weaken themselves to police them. The area was rife with bandits, and rumors of white clad warriors wielding pole arms. On the other hand, they could travel through crane lands, passing Kyuden Kakita and into Kyuden Doji to charter a ship. It would be slower, but much safer with the protection of the crane.

Once the group was excused from the courtroom and the group of lions were left to themselves so as to discuss how they would travel, Jubei mused over a map and gave his thoughts.

"Though the road would be longer, I feel it would be best to go through the crane lands. We would progress at a steady pace and hopefully lay the groundwork for our second assignment.
Furthermore I fear we might be set by troubles and unexpected delays if we try to go through the imperial provinces."

He frowned.

"I've heard nothing but bad news from these areas and though i'd welcome the opportunity to restore some order, that is not the purpose of our mission alas."

This only highlighted the necessity of ending the war as quickly as possible, it was disturbing to think how big portions of the country have fallen into chaos, if this war kept dragging on there won't be any Rokugan left to fight over.

Ikoma Daichi looks at the map, listens to Jubei, then nods enthusiastically. "I agree entirely, Akodo-san. Traveling through the Crane lands is the best. Our mission is to deal with the crate being delivered by the Mantis. As much as I would see the exploits of the esteemed samurai gathered here glorified in song and saga, our need is to ensure we meet with the Mantis."

Daichi raises his head and looks at the Lion around them. "Do not worry, my friends. Our time for glorious battle and honored death will come. Such poems will be written about it...both men and women will weep when they are read, so moved will they be!"
