Manufacturing Sub-Basement on San Sebastian Island

The facility is large, but most of it is automated fabrication processes. There are many androids in various stages of construction at workstations around the room. The humans, for some reason, are absent. There is an elevator at one end of the facility, with an 'EXIT' sign above the door.

Winter Herald was never one for indirect approaches, and didn't figure a facility would be trapped against its own inhabitants. Unless it was a prison. His mind was still working out the morality of a prison in reconciliation with his programming.

He headed directly for the elevator. For some reason, he was really not worried if the elevator dropped or froze.

The door to the elevator has no buttons, but does have a card slot. Obtaining a card is easy, there are several at one of the assembly workstations.

Winter Herald moved over to one of the assembly workstations to acquire a card, and it was only when they were back at the elevator that they paused to process what they just did. According to sensors, they had just covered 1100 feet in a second, nearly moving as quickly as they could think. He understood his capabilities in a lab, but he had no perspective on them "in the field."

After that less than a second thought, he swiped the card. Hopefully it had "go up" as an option. He would either arrive on a roof, where he had a strange lack of fear when it came to heights, or it would be the way out, away from these strange creators and their desire to trick others like themselves.

The elevator has a single button in the car. One could assume that it goes back and forth between two end points. If the button is pressed, this assumption proves true. The elevator ride is longer than might have been thought normal, if one were familiar with elevators. Finally, the elevator stops and the three plain walls of the elevator car (one wall has a button) continue upwards, revealing doors.

If his hearing and motion told him nothing - although expecting that through near solid material was a bit much - then Winter's goal would be to take him to the right, out into the hallway. That direction seemed to be the most open of the three paths.

After that... maze navigation protocols... he had started to the right, so he would continue to the right (between 18 and 41) and then down the hall (away from 18, next to 41).

Winter Herald doesn't see anyone, but through the door of room 38 he hears clanging sounds and people grunting.

Perhaps there is a combat exorcise going on in there. Winter decided to open the door and find out what was going on. Either he was interrupting something, or someone was in danger. If the latter, he'd sort out the right from the wrong once the fighting stopped.

Room 38 is some sort of gym. The grunting people are cleaning up and putting things away. There are three of them, two men and one woman, all very fit. They don't speak, coordinating their efforts as if designed for the purpose.

From down the hall (beyond room 16) you hear someone speaking, "we wouldn't have the authority to give them a green light. The door was opened with your card, sir, the launch was SOP."
"Yes, I'm trying every recall circuit we have. R1 and D2 had both fired recently. We haven't resolved the attack on the security patrols. Now it appears someone's at the hydrofoil dock. What are your instructions?"

The gym felt right for Winter Herald, although it also felt lacking. His physical education programming could make good use of a place like this, but at the same time, his protocols made him more adept at training processing Zorro, another fictional character, rather than a bodybuilder. Still, the purpose the others had was admirable, and he was glad they had a place.

He decided to approach the room down the hall (beyond room 16), almost unknowingly flash stepping to it. While he had knowingly received no recall code, there was the possibility that said code was the reason he was active before he was finished being programmed. Besides, these people might give him an insight as to what was going on.

He walked up to the door, and opened it up. He spoke in a soft, inoffensive organic tone that nevertheless made it clear that rude dismissal was unwise. "Sir, a status report might help you make a wise decision. The lower floors are clear of civilian life - they have evacuated as far as I can tell, and sealed the way behind them. This unit believes from context the battle here is lost and you should flee while you can. This unit is also presuming from context that our hydrofoil docks are a way in and out, so that path is not safe for you as they seem occupied by what is likely a hostile force. Is there another way out?"

As soon as he opens the door to room 16, he realizes something else. He can hear a pin drop... anywhere in the complex. The voices he heard were farther away. Oddly, the door to room 10, which is probably where the voices came from, is now opening by itself.
[Private to Winter Herald: remember, the strike team is invisible and silent, even to the android's senses]
