I would like to just point out that the basic operation of a semi auto rifle, bolt action rifle and sub machine gun are all the same.

Thus there’s no real reason for a separate WP for semi automatic rifles and Sub machine guns other then the fact that the writes of the RPG book never handled said weapons.

Case in point as a trained basic rifleman in the USMC (I wasn’t a grunt, but close to it) it took all of 5 minutes to explain to me how an Uzi works and fires from an open bolt as opposed to a closed bolt on an M-16 or M-4. After shooting some paper targets we cleared a shitty half burned down mansion the Tanzanian army used for CQB training with live ammo and using Uzi’s instead of M-4’s, and Remington 870 shotguns.

Years later my uncle handed me a German Mauser from WWII and it took about five minutes to figure out out that weapon worked.

So I think Winter Hereald will be just fine using an Uzi.

Senor Garcia does have two auto rifles tho. One for CQB, and the other while meant as a sniper rifle could be used as a battle rifle as well. Old geezer can’t/won’t carry both of them and he won’t mind sharing.

To be honest, the weapon proficiencies appear to be a kludge. Look at ancient ranged weapons across the books and you'll find version 1 had one WP for any ancient ranged weapon (W.P. Targeting).
Version 2 has W.P. Archery and Targeting, W.P. Throwing Weapons (small), and W.P. Targeting (Throwing/Missile Weapons).

I can understand why the 1st Edition versions of the WPs could be wonky. But you would think that for a 2nd Edition (that’s 1998 for Hero’s Unlimited) maybe more research could have been done because by that time we had the internet.

Honestly, I'm fine with the weirdness. If you want to give it to me for free, or houserule that WP away in place of Automatic Rifle, you can do that. If you want to change nothing, that's cool. Changes mean I alter my text, which can be done quickly, and no change means I don't.

To be honest, I've noticed the various Archery and Targeting skills. Some of them stack, which I didn't feel was an accident. Knife and (in a moment of oddly having done research) Sword both also play nice with one of those Weapon Proficiencies.

Targeting is one WP that does/should add to the throwing strike of other WP’s provided the weapon is MEANT to be thrown.

For example if you have WP Knife and Targeting then targeting bonuses adds to your thrown knife strike.

Spear is an example where it depends on the weapon if targeting should be factored in. If you have a javelin which is meant to be thrown the answer is yes. If you have a rifle with a bayonet attached (yes it’s a spear!) then the answer is no because that kind of spear is not meant to be thrown, as it is not aerodynamic.

Not sure where I have it (maybe in my dead N&SS game here on RPOL) but I even have all the WP’s you should have to use the ninja specific weapons (of which there is not a WP listed in the book). Basically I researched how each weapon was used and went “Ok you need WP Chain, and WP Axe for that”. This meant a full blown ninja had just about every ancient WP.

Hi, super busy today and not feeling great. Killer sinus headache. Yah burn pits.

I think the root problem here is applying logic to Palladium. It can't be done with any consistency. The fundamentals of Marksmanship are the same, ad Garcia pointed out. There is no difference between aiming and firing a bolt action rifle or a semi-auto rifle: sight alignment, sight picture, breath control, trigger control. Stance if applicable.

This ties into the general mess Palladium has made of its skill system. For myself, there are just way too damn many skills. If I had it my way, the skill categories would be the skills.

In this instance, it would be Ranged Weapon as the base skill, then Firearm ad the next level specialty before finally reaching the top tier specialty of Uzi. Base skill gives X% to all Ranged Weapons, Firearms adds Y% to the base, Uzi adds a final bonus.

This applies to all skills.

I did come up with a homebrew system for dealing with skill bloat, but that was mostly because some skills are - put simply - more useful than others. That said, it's homebrew, and would honestly be a pain to implement mid-game.

It did occur to me that I'd be surprised if Runa might not be as reserved as Lilibeth is on Winter Herald's viewpoint. Then again, her reaction to the idea that Winter Herald thinks she might be someone else's alternative personality would probably go over like a lead balloon. Winter Herald is materialistic to a fault, although he would certainly be open to concepts like "extraterrestrial" or "alternative dimension."

Also, "thousand post limit" and all that jazz.

Yeah but IIRC it doesn’t really say what ninja weapon applies to which WP or it’s the fact those WPs are not listed. I’d have to crack open the book and find the notes I did up because I was going to have Juicer Ninja’s attack the players at some point in my N&SS game.

I've always found the whole "weapon kata" aspect of N&SS to be fascinating, especially where ninjas are concerned. They get eleven weapon proficiencies* to begin with, but are allowed no more than three weapon katas (the third coming at level eleven).

I would love to see Palladium update the game more in line with Rifts.  It think 8f a Martial Art teaches a weapon proficiency, it should be considered a kata; why teach it as part of the fighting style if you can't use it with the fighting style?
