I. In the Hold

Most of you remember it this way: You were walking in the countryside near your homes, strolling home from the tavern after a night's drinking, walking down to the river to fetch some water, or gone to visit some lass or lad in neighboring village.  And, suddenly, you heard a thrashing in the underbrush around you, and before you could turn you felt a whale of a blow to the back of your head, and everything went black.

When you awoke, you were in the dark, tiny, stinking hold of the pirate galley, shackled by your wrists to the sturdy beams of the slave bunks, bunks stacked like cordwood. There were about 40 other captured folk of the archipelago there. You were sick from the blow to your head and from the tossing of the ship, from the revolting gruel the slaver pirates occasionally fed you, and from the knowledge that you were bound for one of the western slave ports, never again to see your own home. Mockingly, the keys to your shackles were hung from a hook right by the hatch to the deck, only 5 or 6 feet from the lot of you. They might as well be miles away.

(This is your chance to RP and get to know each other.  Yes, this means you.)

I. In the Hold

In the corner a nauseated and shackled half elf was sitting, obviously angry at what had happened.
He cursed the pirates and said to the others in the stinking hold:
This is what you get with pirates. They've got no respect for decent people. Here I am, visiting my neighboring farmers, walking home, and wham, they hit me and treat me like an animal. And they treat animals very badly. Now I know how to treat an animal, I'm very good at it, I say. But these pirates, they're monsters. They're so mean and evil. They're worse than animals. My name is Jory Longarm, by the way.

I. In the Hold

It's the voice cutting through the creaking of the ship and the soft sound of waves battering against the ship that woke the young man. He had been in and out of consciousness thus far and no one was able to get much out of him save for a few grunts and groans. Dried blood from a nasty gash on his head that is already starting to heal has masked a good bit of his facial features. Instinctively he tries to reach for the wound to comfort his pain and is met by the immediate resistance of the shackles about his wrists. Dumbfounded, the young man tries again before his eyes find their way to the rusty shackles, " What? Ugh ... " Seeing as how he can't bring his hands to his head he brings his head to his hands.

Eventually he takes his head from his hands. Looking around for what appears to be the first time his eyes widen as he slowly takes in his predicament. Seeing the source of the voice that woke him he turns his attention to the man, " Ugh ... Jory? Pirates? We've been taken by pirates? " He grimaces and rests his head upon his arm, obviously still in pain from the blow he took about his head. He is young, perhaps sixteen or so. By the looks of him he has seen some heavy labor during those few years, possibly as a farmer but more likely as a porter of some sort as his build looks to have been formed by the constant weight of lifting heavy objects.

Lying nearby Tath slowly stirred as he heard voices. Keeping his eyes closed and attempting to not move his head to much, as even the slightest movement brought a throbbing pain to his skull. He slowly eased himself into a seated position, head hanging between his knees. "Aaagh, filthy pirates."

Pulling on the heavy chains, and slowly looking about "Names Tath Sua, looks like we are in quite a pickle friends."

In the intro to this thread, it says: "... from the revolting gruel the slaver pirates occasionally fed you.." So I guess we've been on this ship for at least a day and that we know that we've been taken by pirates who want to sell us as slaves.

Jory wondered whether the young man, who hadn't said his name so far, was seriously wounded. He seemed to be on the verge of unconsciousness all the time. I think you need medical attention, young man. You're not well, everyone can see that. Apparently they hit you very hard on the head, as you've been unconscious most of the time. Perhaps we should call the pirates and say that one of their valuable trade assets is about to loose its value.

I. In the Hold

Another youth nearby stirs groggily, the lack of food and comfortable sleep telling that his story is the same as theirs.  When he looks up, his auburn hair, hazel eyes, and fair-skinned and freckled face are those of the tavern owner's son, Daniv Jensen.  Most times, he is seen only as he brings food from the kitchen to the bar for the servers to deliver to the tables.
As he looks about, there is a bruise and a small gash just above his left eye, and another thin cut running from the corner of that eye, to the corner of his lip that is encrusted in blood.
I would consider being angry with you lot for waking me up, if my dreams were not as bad as this filthy sty, he says with a yawn.  He looks about the hold, the bunks, the other prisoners.  Anyone have any ideas on how we can get out of here?

And yet, another damned soul on this ferry on the Styx, made a groaning noise. A man many with flaxen hair began to sir on the top shelf of the cord wood. He had a rather nasty bump on his head, as blue eyes fluttered open. “ What…… what in the name of the Gods happened.. and what is that smell?” croaked his voice.

Jory realized belatedly that he knew the youth, it was Daniv from the tavern!
Hey Daniv, you here too? I hadn't recognized you before, man, you look bad, all bruised and a bit bloody. And no, I don't have the faintest idea about how to get these shackles off. If you've got muscles of steel, then go ahead and try. But I think these shackles were craft to restrain an ox or a horse! There's no alternative but to wait and hope we'll get a master who deals with his slaves in a human way, rather than this bestial cruelty we're in now.

Daniv turns as best he can to face Jory, though, from his position, it isn't very well.  He notices others from the tavern are imprisoned with the two youths.
Well, if you hadn't been making googly eyes at Elsbeth Dunnhill instead at home,  you might not be here, he says with a chuckle.  I told you that girl was going to be nothing but trouble for you.  Then again, she have been trouble for all of us.
He tests the strength of the manacles.  When that yeilds nothing of use, he begins looking around.  I, for one, have no intention letting myself be sold into slavery.  Even were it to the richest, kindest, and most beautiful of mistresses.  He is hoping to find a loose, thick sliver of wood, or loose nail, anything he might be able to use to try to pick the lock of the manacles.

No thank you,
Deniv responds as he finally finds a sliver of wood he can pry free.  It looks thick enough to hold up to the job, but he cannot be sure until he tries.  Reaching the locking mechanism is difficult, but he finally manages it.  Atnthe angle he has to work, he knows that success is a long shot.  But, he tries anyway.
By the Nine Hells, he mutters as the sliver breaks in the lock.  Now, he has to work to get it back out.....

Now though his strength had mostly returned, though he does t move in any fashion to let anyone know he was awake. Not that sal had ever been in a cargo bay as the cargo before, but something told him to gauge his fellow slaves- no, prisoners, he corrected himself- for the ones who seem tough butewl before the Masters. So he spent some time observing. He had the one named  Daniv to his right, and Rebecca was to his left and up a row, by his feet. Now he stirred, daniv seemed like an all right fellow. He nudged Rebecca with his foot- or at least, he was going to ask her to retrieve something from his shoe- but he didn't even have shoes, anymore. So instead, he smiled kindly at the girl and nudged her with his foot anyways.  listen- its scary here, and i imagine it must be doubly so for a lady. i just wanted to let you know that, so far as im able i wont let anyone prisoner or otherwise, take advantage of you. he supposed his directness might come off suspiciously, but he really was being g honest.

Edward, who had been a healer in his village, was shocked and disgusted to find himself a prisoner on a pirate ship. Though he could tend to the wounds of his fellow villagers, he found himself unable to tend to his own bruises and cuts as his hands were shackled. All he could do is wait in solemn silence as the other prisoners spoke to one and other. Though he may look serious and dignified, in truth he was doing his best to keep the disgusting food (if it could even be called food) in his stomach.

In an attempt to keep the other prisoners' spirits up Edward finally speaks, "If this is to be our fate, let us go in dignity." Admittedly this did not sound very inspiring once it was out.

Ha!  Deniv was looking at the healer.  There have not been many, but there have been merchants with slaves come to the tavern.  My father took their coin without any thought to it.
He looks over at the girl, then at each of the other prisoners in turn.  Most were treated badly.  Forced to do things at night in their masters' room.  Made to eat from the floor.  To sleep with the horses and cattle.  Some were treated well enough, but still as property.  There is no dignity in this... life.  His voice is not loud, almost a whisper in volume.  But it carries a vehemence of one who has experienced degradation.
The peoples of Highport abhor slavery.  But, in the port cities and their surrounding lands, it is... tolerated for the sake of increased trade.
He stands as best he can in the cramped confines of the hold.  He puts his feet against the wall and he begins to tug as hard as he can manage.

Sal nodded to the healer, agreeing tacitly, but when Daniv spoke he felt compelled to speak. Ah, rather, brother? There is no dignity in the life that they assign us to, no. But we are not only what they make of us. I am Sal Warth, degenerate lowlife with a heart o' gold I sold a long time ago to pay for my gambling habits. he grinned at himself and tipped a nonexistent hat.  he gestured around him to the chains, and above to the pirates. I am not defined by these chains, by their rules. Neither are you, Daniv. So why not play the same game you always have? don't be rash, be smart- comply as much as you need to, not an ounce more, and when there's  a chance of a solid out, then take it. What should you accomplish, by breaking free of those chains, now? gonna hop overboard? take on the whole crew? he then grimaced, saying I hope you'll forgive the sarcasm I used to crudely illustrate. I digressed a bit there, but the point is this: dignity is what you make for yourself, it is independence, and culture that is not defined by these pirates or whoever they sell us to. He spoke in a quiet voice that nevertheless carried to each that were clear eyed, punctuated by bits of passion he restrained quickly.

Everyone seemed so chatty and in a general decent mood. It was hard for the boy to wrap his mind around. Even Daniv, who was younger than he, seemed to be dealing with being taken captive rather well. He knew that if he spoke he would probably loose whatever grip he had on himself. Just watching everyone talk amongst themselves was hard on him. He did manage to follow along with the conversation and was ready for whatever plan the others decided on. Even if it was to just sit and await their fate. For the time being his head swam and his ears were ringing. As such he was content to sit and watch.

But not in this hold, with these other prisoners.  He falls thoughtfully silent, his fingers finding one of the fastenings of the manacles, trying to work it out though he knows he probably will be unable to get it free.

I. In the Hold

A few days after you woke up, the ship was hit by a squall, which turned, after half a day of tossing and rolling, into a full-fledged storm which blasted spray and curses into the hold every time the hatch above was opened. Your jailer, a man named Hafkris, maybe a half-orc, it was hard to tell under all that grime and walrus ugliness, brought about half the shackled slaves abovedecks to man the oars vacated by sailors washed overboard The storm continued on another day, and Hafkris took another one-fourth of the slave cargo abovedecks He looked worried.

That was yesterday. You haven't seen any of the pirates or the slaves since then, and you haven't been fed. Early today, the shouting and cracking whips indicating that rowers were being kept in line finally faded away to nothing.

Right now, as you're waiting for some sign of life from abovedecks, there's an enormous crash, a grating, grinding noise and horrible shuddering of the ship around you as it runs aground. Abovedecks, there’s the sound of snapping spars and a great crash on the deck which you know must be the mast coming down.  You're all thrown toward the bow, but are still held fast by your shackles and suffer more bruises to your wrists.

The bow of the galley is shattered by the impact, and as the galley grinds to a halt, the bow is torn away entirely, letting in a ferocious blast of numbingly-cold air and ram; the port side of the galley is laid open by a huge boulder that the galley has ground against.

A moment later, there's once again only the sound of wind and pounding surf. Out the open bow, you can see a section of rain-pounded beach; you seem to have run aground where a cliff face meets a cove beach.

Jory had been shaken during the storm, but he had survived, so he rejoiced inwardly and said:
"I'm alive"
His wrists were still in the strong manacles, but at least he could stand up and wriggle a bit with the chains.
So he stood up and started pulling hither and tither on the chains, with all his strength and using his weight to the best advantage.
He was trying to get free.

Can we bend down to the floor and pick something up? What is the anchor to which my chains are fastened, a pole or a board or something else?

The ordeal was horrendous and Einlian was thrilled to be alive. His whole life he had wanted to join up with a crew and sail out of his home port. Now he was just happy to see land. The half elven farmer had been lucky enough to have been freed by the crash. Looking at his shackles he was not so fortunate. Forgetting Jory for the time being he looked around to the others near him to see if anyone was hurt badly and if possibly any more had been freed in the crash, " Anyone hurt? " He yanked on his chains to try and at least free them from their mounting as the others were gathering themselves after the crash.

Ok I'm assuming here that I was not freed of anything as it did not directly say so. If I am wrong I will edit my post.

Bruised, battered, and soon to be aching, Deniv pulls himself from under another, unmoving prisoner.  He reaches dow to check the older man's breathing, and finds a a large splinter of wood protruding from his chest.  He staggers back, crab-walking slightly into the gunwale.  Ugh!
Leaning down, he inspects the chain and manacles.  The manacles are attached to a welded chain.  Following that to the gunwale, the chain is affixed to what appears to be a half-ring that goes into a plate bolted to the wall.  Picking up a piece of wood with an end broken close to a point, he shoves. As much of that end as he can into the half-ring.  When he can't push it in any further by hand, he grabs anothe rpiece of wood to hammer it.  Being barefoot at this time, having lost his sandals at some point, he decides he does not want to injure his feet by kicking it.
After about thirteen hits, he shatters his wooden hammer and has to find another to begin again.  However, two more hits pop the ring from the plate, at least freeing him from the wall.  He sits on the deck, tired and breathing heavily.  After a minute or three, he picks up the wood pieces he had used and tosses them to Jory.
Try this.  It worked for me.
I can at least move around, now.

Stick the pointed end into the ring on the wall.  It's half a ring, with two flattened ends holding it in the plate there.  He points to each part as he speaks.  Then, hammer the wide end until it pops loose.  You'll still be shackled, but you can move around.
He turns it over to the taller man and begins looking around the wreckage, hoping to find the keys or something else to use to open the manacles on his wrists.

"Thanks much" Lam happily stated as his shackles were unlocked. He rubbed at the bruised spots where the metal had rubbed. He grit his teeth when he discovered that some skin had been torn away. He looked up at the hole at the ship's bow.

"Better not be any more pirates around" he muttered. Leaning over, he picked up a stiff piece of cot wood, the perfect length for a club. He stood. Lam's legs were weakened from days down, but he was sure that they would be back to strength soon. He swung the makeshift club.

"No pirates" he repeated to himself.

We can't assume that this island is safe for us. We had better be able to defend ourselves. Yes, even you, madam, should try to help in an emergency! Secondly, we need food and water. The slave hold runs about two-thirds of the length of the galley, from the bow to about one-third of the way to the stern. One hatch leads to the deck. When tried, the hatch is immovable.  Something heavy must be on it.  The only other exit is the huge hole torn open at the bow.  Cold wind and rain are coming through the gaping hole.

He accepts the hug with a bit of hesitancy.  Right now, shelter and fresh water are the least of our worries.  Keeping water it is a bigger concern.  So is warmth and food.  He looks around the remains of the hold.
If we find some of the bowls or buckets they used to brings us that nasty gruel, we can use those to catch rainwater.  He reaches up to tug on his ragged shirt.  If we can find more of these, we can use them to stay warm, or we huddle together.  I think our best bet is to stay here until this storm blows over.  Maybe a couple of you bigger guys could try to break that door open so we can see if there are any supplies we can use.
Still holding his manacles, he grips the end of the chain and gives the manacle end a whirl.  He would prefer a dagger or a knife, but, in a pinch, it could be used as a makeshift flail.

Deniv looks thoughtful for a moment.  You have a point.  But, going out in that storm, you have a good chance of getting lost, getting washed out to sea, or just getting hurt or killed.  Visibility isn't good out there right now.  Or best bet is to stick close to each other and use what shelter we have until we can't any more.  We can take it to a vote if you want.

Sal looks at the ones discussing whether to stay or to go. On the one hand, it was the only place that they knew of that they could have shelter from the storm, and yet the storm might take the ship away from its perch on the shore. it was pretty much a tossup, as far as sal was concerned, which meant the gambler didn't have fear. Before we decide one way or other, we should at least take a look outside the ship. Get a better look at how damaged the ship is, and what potential cover there might be on the shore. Then decide. He shrugs, still rubbing his wrists to try and get the feeling back into them. He, too had kept hold of his chain for a weapon, preferring it to the makeshift clubs to be found. he gets up and walks over to the hole torn in the bow, peering up to see if it was possible for him to climb up to get to the deck.

The chains are usable as weapons, but barely so.  (-4 to hit, 1d3 damage)

Sal takes a look through the gaping hole and sees the half-orc Halfric that had been the cruel pirate in charge of the slaves.  He is walking up back and forth along the beach, singing and staggering in drunken fashion.  He does have a nice cloak and boots, but he's armored in studded leather and carrying a broadsword.  There's no way of exiting without being seen.

It appears that the deck is reachable with a small amount of climbing.  It wouldn't be difficult but not particularly dangerous.

He saw the damaged pirate ship, where he had been imprisoned for so long as a slave. He would go back to the ship, to look for other survivors, especially slaves like him. But first he looked around for some kind of makeshift weapon. After all, there could still be pirates around.

He had been rowing at the oars, when a large wave threw him overboard. He tried to swim to the shore and then he must have passed out. Luckily the sea had thrown him onto the beach and he had regained consciousness.

With a shout, he drives it down....
The tip of the blade thuds into the wood of the deck next to the pirate's head.  Strip him of everything, even clothes.
He pulls the sword from the wood, dropping it as he walks past.  Shackle him like we were, but both wrists AND ankles.  He grimaces as the pain of his own wound overcomes his flagging anger and grief.  Sinking to his knees, he strips off his shirt and begins to try to tend to his own injury.

He tossed everything taken from the orc into a pile off to the side before looking around for a pair of shackles one he had finished the first part of the task set to him, " We just gonna leave him bound like this? Deniv sits quietly, not even acknowledging the new arrival, as he binds his own wound with some of the dirty cloth left over from his deceased friend's shirt.  Stripes, both newly healed and old scars, criss-cross his back.  They are too broad and shallow to be from the pirates' lash.  He looks slowly up at the newcomer.  The man looks vaguely familiar.

"He was a good man", Jory answered.
Jory noticed that nobody seemed to care about the fact that he was literally dying from the cold.
In fact, Jory had been rubbing his own body, to get it dry and stop the shivering.
He saw only one option to get warm again: the leather armor that the pirate had been wearing.
The leather armor lay to the side, so he went over and tried to put on the armor, while his hands were almost numb, to wear the armor over his bare chest.
He kept rubbing his limbs after that.

Deniv stands up, his skin slickened by the rain when he tried to fight the pirate by the hole in the hull.  It finally gets to him and he shivers.  We don't have much in the way of clothing to keep warm.  We need to build a fire, but that is a very bad idea in here.  He looks around.  Still, I don't see much choice.
He walks over to the girl, Rebeccah.  Hi.  I'm Deniv.  What's your name?  He waits for her response before continuing.  Can you collect some of these pieces of wood?  We need two sizes.  Some no thicker than your thumb, and other, larger pieces for a longer burn.  Can you do that?  Get someone to help you.
He looks over at New Jory, Lam, and Einlan.  Search the pirates's belongings.  See if you can find a tinderbox.  If not, we'll need his sword, a rock, preferably flint or a crystal, and something that will burn fast and hot.
He turns to whom ever is left.  I need help bringing in some rocks.  We're foing to get wet and cold, but we need to build a fireplace.   Wet rocks will work, but we will need a lot of them.
Injured, but having a purpose, Deniv steps out into the rain to begin bringing any rocks he can find to use as a heatshield on the deck of the ruined ship.  He grimaces and winces as he works, but he knows they have little choice but to put some effort in if they are to survive.  He is no Ranger, but living and working in a tavern has taught him a few things, especially a tavern built on an island subject to heavy storms such as hurricanes.
Suddenly, he stops.  Gioing back inside, he looks at the body of his friend.  I'm so sorry.  I did my best, he says sadly.  Leaning down, he removes the rest of the ragged clothing from the body, then begins to drag to corpse out of the broken hull towards the stormy sea.  You were a good friend.  And brave.  If I were religious, I would do this more properly.  Might even know the right words to say.  When I see your parents again, I will tell them you died bravely.

This galley is a typical Korinn Archipelago galley. It is about 60 feet long, with 10 two-man oar benches down each side. Obviously, it carries a rowing complement of 40 men plus a captain and a steersman. The galley has (had, rather) a single mast.  The sail was furled when the squall hit, and the mast snapped to come crashing down on deck mere minutes before the ship ran aground.

The galley had no forecastle or sterncastle.  Two hatches open into the holds; the forward hatch, now covered by the fallen mast, opens into the forward hold (where the slaves were chained) and the aft hatch opens into a small aft hold.

Down in the aft hold...

This hold is in no better shape than the forward hold. The collision with the boulders to starboard tore open a huge part of the galley's hull here, and the bottom of the hold is swamped in sea-water. This hold is still partly in the water.

There's not much to be found here; specifically, the following items:
Four broken barrels which have spilled wine and ale everywhere;
Dozens of sacks of grain, soaked with wine, ale, seawater, and rainwater, all useless;
Fifty quarrels ;
A heavy crossbow;
A chest. In the chest, undamaged, are the captain's log; navigational charts, and a book.

He gets up to the deck, again careful to prevent slipping on the wet floor.
He returns to the bow, where he asks one of the others and lowers the crossbow and quarrels to him, while he stays on the deck.
He then prepares to go back to the aft hold.

Tired from lugging wet sand and rock intonthe shipnfrom outside, Deniv takes a seat near Rebeccah to rest a bit.  He is shivering and soaked, but there is nothing he can do about that right now.
Thanks for gathering the wood, he says to her.  He rubs his hands upon his upper arms to slough off water and create heat from friction.  Some of it's wet, but it's covered in pitch to keep the water out.  If we can get a fire started, it will burn.
He falls silent for a few moments as he continues to rub his arms.  The sand and the rick should protect the deck from burning and reflect some heat up.  A couple of the stones look like they might make some good sparks if we strike them on that sword.  If we just had some tinder....  He trails off.

Leading the way to the hull near where he had been shackled, Deniv stops at one of the places where the shackles had been broken from the wall.  Hold your hands below the hole, to catch the dust and splinters, he says.
He then uses the broadhead of the bolt to dig into the hole, scraping dust and tiny bits of wood free.  The pitchbused to make the wood waterproof is flammable.  If we can get a spark to some of this, we can get a flame.  Then we can get a fire lit.

The sail isn't as recoverable as previously thought.  When the mast came down, it pinned a good portion of the sail under it.  Pieces of canvas can be cut free, but nothing big enough to make a cloak or blanket alone.  The rope is in similar condition, but there are a few useful pieces.  Someone with the proper skills could make them into something more useful.

Daniv scrapes out pieces of wood and dust, but gusts of icy wind conspire against him.  Much of what collects in Rebeccah's hand gets blown out.  The large hole in the ship is doing little to keep out the driving rain as well.  Those not actively working on something are starting to shiver badly.

He turns towards where the piratw had been stripped of clothing and gear, grabbing the wet cloak.  He wrings it out as he walks to where the others are huddling together.  He makes sure that the smaller people are on the inside of the huddle as he sirects the former prisoners together.    He sits on the outside himself, his back towards the cold, making sure that Rebeccah has a space on the inside.  Draping the cloak over the outside group towards the hole in the hull, with himself in the middle, he uses it to protect them from wind and rain as much as possible.

It will keep you warm even wet.  He then walks ahead a little bit, as if lost in his own world.  She can see the scars striped across his back, some criss-crossing, as if he has been under the lash several times, but they are wide.  Some are still the angry pink of recent healing.
As he walks, he uses the head of a crossbow bolt to cut the remains of his shirt into strips.  One of the strips is used to tie two of the bolts together and sling them over his left shoulder, points down.  He then breaks the shaft of the third so that their is a bit more than the width of his hand attached to the broadhead.  The rest of the shaft gets wrapped loosely in strips, then tucked under his arm as he wraps a strip of cloth around his make-shift knife to give it some thickness for a better grip.  Wringing water from the cloth, he wrings it so it is tight around the shaft before tying it off.  Leather would work better, especially since it would shrink as it dries, but resources are limited.
He drops back, holding out the make-shift weapon to her.  Would you like one?  Incase you need to protect yourself?

Getting to the top of the cliffs is work, but not particularly dangerous.  There are just enough ledges sticking out that one can almost walk up the cliff.  At the top of the cliff, nearly the whole island is laid out in view.  The rain coming in thick across the island reduces visibility to a few hundred feet.  The highest and most forbidding hills are westward, running the entire length of the island from North to South.  Northward is broken terrain, passable but not easy going, while eastward the terrain seems to flatten out a little bit. However, since it's still hilly and broken even in that direction, nobody can see any sign of shelter or a human community in any direction.

There's not much green to be seen, except for some common, practically indestructible scrub growth, the island seems to be totally lifeless.

Standing atop the cliff, shivering from the drenching he received combined with the days mental exhaustion Man, not much here.  True, we need to keep moving and find shelter and eastward looks favorable to walk but northward probably has caves or areas of cover seeing how broken up it is. turns to Daniv Daniv, if the ship is still there tomorrow we do need to get as much out of it as we can, deck boards, mastheads, railings and so forth that can help us survive here.
