I. In the Hold

"He was a good man", Jory answered.
Jory noticed that nobody seemed to care about the fact that he was literally dying from the cold.
In fact, Jory had been rubbing his own body, to get it dry and stop the shivering.
He saw only one option to get warm again: the leather armor that the pirate had been wearing.
The leather armor lay to the side, so he went over and tried to put on the armor, while his hands were almost numb, to wear the armor over his bare chest.
He kept rubbing his limbs after that.

I. In the Hold

Deniv stands up, his skin slickened by the rain when he tried to fight the pirate by the hole in the hull.  It finally gets to him and he shivers.  We don't have much in the way of clothing to keep warm.  We need to build a fire, but that is a very bad idea in here.  He looks around.  Still, I don't see much choice.
He walks over to the girl, Rebeccah.  Hi.  I'm Deniv.  What's your name?  He waits for her response before continuing.  Can you collect some of these pieces of wood?  We need two sizes.  Some no thicker than your thumb, and other, larger pieces for a longer burn.  Can you do that?  Get someone to help you.
He looks over at New Jory, Lam, and Einlan.  Search the pirates's belongings.  See if you can find a tinderbox.  If not, we'll need his sword, a rock, preferably flint or a crystal, and something that will burn fast and hot.
He turns to whom ever is left.  I need help bringing in some rocks.  We're foing to get wet and cold, but we need to build a fireplace.   Wet rocks will work, but we will need a lot of them.
Injured, but having a purpose, Deniv steps out into the rain to begin bringing any rocks he can find to use as a heatshield on the deck of the ruined ship.  He grimaces and winces as he works, but he knows they have little choice but to put some effort in if they are to survive.  He is no Ranger, but living and working in a tavern has taught him a few things, especially a tavern built on an island subject to heavy storms such as hurricanes.
Suddenly, he stops.  Gioing back inside, he looks at the body of his friend.  I'm so sorry.  I did my best, he says sadly.  Leaning down, he removes the rest of the ragged clothing from the body, then begins to drag to corpse out of the broken hull towards the stormy sea.  You were a good friend.  And brave.  If I were religious, I would do this more properly.  Might even know the right words to say.  When I see your parents again, I will tell them you died bravely.

"I'm Rebeccah," comes her reply.  "I'll see what I can find."  She gathers up what wood she can find in and around the ship and makes a pile inside.

Rebeccah is able to recover plenty of wood, most of it is too soaked to be of any use.  There is no tinder, flint, or other supplies to be found.  A fire isn't looking likely to happen, especially with the wind blowing directly into the hole in the ship.

Jory Ranglore helps Daniv to carry the body of his friend to the sea.
Then he tries to climb onto the deck to see if there's anything there to eat, drink or to protect ourselves against the weather.

Deniv comes back in with a couple of wet rocks that he sets down near the opposite side of the hull from the gaping hole.  Looking around, another thought comes to him.  He grabs the pants he had removed from his dead friend and ties the cuffs at the ends of the legs closed.  A bit of help would be nice, he says through chattering teeth.
Going back outside, he begins to fill the pants with wet sand, which he drags in to dump on the deck to make his firepit.

I. In the Hold

This galley is a typical Korinn Archipelago galley. It is about 60 feet long, with 10 two-man oar benches down each side. Obviously, it carries a rowing complement of 40 men plus a captain and a steersman. The galley has (had, rather) a single mast.  The sail was furled when the squall hit, and the mast snapped to come crashing down on deck mere minutes before the ship ran aground.

The galley had no forecastle or sterncastle.  Two hatches open into the holds; the forward hatch, now covered by the fallen mast, opens into the forward hold (where the slaves were chained) and the aft hatch opens into a small aft hold.

Down in the aft hold...

This hold is in no better shape than the forward hold. The collision with the boulders to starboard tore open a huge part of the galley's hull here, and the bottom of the hold is swamped in sea-water. This hold is still partly in the water.

There's not much to be found here; specifically, the following items:
Four broken barrels which have spilled wine and ale everywhere;
Dozens of sacks of grain, soaked with wine, ale, seawater, and rainwater, all useless;
Fifty quarrels ;
A heavy crossbow;
A chest. In the chest, undamaged, are the captain's log; navigational charts, and a book.

Jory carefully descends into the aft hold.
He picks up the heavy crossbow and fifty quarrels.
He gets up to the deck, again careful to prevent slipping on the wet floor.
He returns to the bow, where he asks one of the others and lowers the crossbow and quarrels to him, while he stays on the deck.
He then prepares to go back to the aft hold.

Tired from lugging wet sand and rock intonthe shipnfrom outside, Deniv takes a seat near Rebeccah to rest a bit.  He is shivering and soaked, but there is nothing he can do about that right now.
Thanks for gathering the wood, he says to her.  He rubs his hands upon his upper arms to slough off water and create heat from friction.  Some of it's wet, but it's covered in pitch to keep the water out.  If we can get a fire started, it will burn.
He falls silent for a few moments as he continues to rub his arms.  The sand and the rick should protect the deck from burning and reflect some heat up.  A couple of the stones look like they might make some good sparks if we strike them on that sword.  If we just had some tinder....  He trails off.

Receccah rocked back and forth trying to keep warm.  "I don't know about the kindling.  I might be able to start a fire if someone gave me a torch.  If I had magic, I could light that in an instant.  I've seen wizards do it."  She stopped herself from rambling and embarrassing herself further.  She felt useless enough as it was without acting crazy on top of it.

Tath hears Jory's call and gathers the crossbow and quarrels he hands down, "You need any help up there?" As he stacks the weapon and ammo to the side in a safe location "How much of that sail can be salvaged Jory? We might be able to use it to makes some makeshift clothing or to drape over the hole and block some wind and rain."

Jory answered: "The sail is still whole, because it was furled when the storm came. So come on up on deck, then we can take it down together."
Jory lies down on the deck and stretches his hands down to help Tath climb up too.

You're more capable than you know.  They haven't broken you yet.  He indicates the slaves who are huddled together, cowering, like they are still shackled, and unable to look up at those who are walking about freely.  Their will has been... splintered.  They....
He stops what he is saying as something dawns upon him.  Splinters.  Wood dust.  Why didn't I think of it before....  He turns to Rebeccah.  Come with me.  I could use your help.
He stands up and walks over to pick up the pirate's sword then moves towards the hull where he had been shackled.  Suddenly he stops near Tath at the opening and sees the crossbow and bolts.  He holds up the sword.  You will need this.  Meanwhile, I have a use for a couple of these.  Once he hands over the sword, he grabs three of the crossbow bolts.

Take the sword so you can cut the ropes of the sails.  And cut some lengths of rope, too.  He holds out the sword until someone takes it.

Leading the way to the hull near where he had been shackled, Deniv stops at one of the places where the shackles had been broken from the wall.  Hold your hands below the hole, to catch the dust and splinters, he says.
He then uses the broadhead of the bolt to dig into the hole, scraping dust and tiny bits of wood free.  The pitchbused to make the wood waterproof is flammable.  If we can get a spark to some of this, we can get a flame.  Then we can get a fire lit.

The sail isn't as recoverable as previously thought.  When the mast came down, it pinned a good portion of the sail under it.  Pieces of canvas can be cut free, but nothing big enough to make a cloak or blanket alone.  The rope is in similar condition, but there are a few useful pieces.  Someone with the proper skills could make them into something more useful.

Daniv scrapes out pieces of wood and dust, but gusts of icy wind conspire against him.  Much of what collects in Rebeccah's hand gets blown out.  The large hole in the ship is doing little to keep out the driving rain as well.  Those not actively working on something are starting to shiver badly.

The cold wind ruffles her thin dress even at the back of the hold.  She shivers even as she hops up and down to try and generate some heat.  "We need to go find some shelter.  The remains of this ship is not going to be enough."

Our prospects out there, unprotected in the dark, aren't any better, Deniv says glumly.  If we can survive until the storm abates, we might stand a chance.
Using the key, he makes sure the shackles of everyone left in the hold, exceptn the half-orc pirate are unlocked.  Everyone!  Gather in close!  We have to keep each other warm!  It's the only way!
He turns towards where the piratw had been stripped of clothing and gear, grabbing the wet cloak.  He wrings it out as he walks to where the others are huddling together.  He makes sure that the smaller people are on the inside of the huddle as he sirects the former prisoners together.    He sits on the outside himself, his back towards the cold, making sure that Rebeccah has a space on the inside.  Draping the cloak over the outside group towards the hole in the hull, with himself in the middle, he uses it to protect them from wind and rain as much as possible.

Jory gets a few pieces of rope from the deck, hoping that he or some other ex-slave will be able to reconstruct a rope from the pieces.
He then goes to the aft hold, and tries to get the chest with the map etc. on to the deck and carries it to the bow, where he lowers it down to the ground. He then lowers himself down and carries the chest into the slave hold.

OOC: Jory has rope use as NWP, can he restore a rope from the pieces?
