Re: OOC Thread
Hmm, I got the impression that since the rest of the group was using pregens that the gm wanted all of us to use them.

In reply to Oob (msg # 18):

my main goal is to get a game going and learn the system.  i was hoping for a somewhat balanced team to run Acrimony but that doesn't have to be the pregens.  that being said, if you're looking for a more open-ended campaign with user-created characters and a divergent storyline then i can definitely seek you out if i run EP2E again after I figure it out a bit.  totally up to you, friend.

Re: OOC Thread
I suppose pregens have been made more run-of-the-mill to make the quickstart more accessible to a wider audience.

I suggested using them mostly to start playing earlier and getting the hang of the game, as I never played Eclipse Phase, and I discovered its existence only shortly before the kickstarter for 2E came out.

Having a player that knows the setting and the previous game can be useful to provide insight about the setting and its dynamics, though.

In reply to your older posts: I love the Expanse as well, in my opinion it's the best series I've seen, but Dark Matter has this kind of rpg-y charm much stronger than any other series, the main characters act like an adventuring party, they think like my players do (or did, it's been a long time since I played...).

Re: OOC Thread
I've only seen part of the Expanse, but the politics are very similar to a much simplified Eclipse Phase.  Some of the tech is similar, too, but there are lots of big differences.

Anyway, the quickstart rules may not be exactly the same as the eventual rules for 2e.  They were polishing and cutting on the system pretty heavily up until a couple of months ago.  The backerkit just went out for that, so I'd expect a full-on PDF in a month or two.

Re: OOC Thread
To me it seems like The Expanse is the early history of Eclipse Phase, before the problems on earth.

Re: OOC Thread
I got the impression that Eclipse Phase is a mix between the Expanse (for the political and environmental setting) and the Ghost in the Shell manga and anime series (for the transhumanist part), I have mixed feelings about the Psi section, though, it gives me the impression of being more fanservice than a meaningful part of the game. It's true that I'm not deeply familiar with the setting, anyway.

Re: OOC Thread
I hadn't heard of The Expanse before now. Thanks for bringing it up.

Is anyone here wanting to play a lost gen / async character? I'm happy to leave that the realm of NPCs.

Just to be absolutely crystal; Oob, no pregen, modding Njal until it suits your concept won't work? Full chargen or bust?

As presented in the playtest rules, they're entirely too Fishmalk.  They're an interesting thing, in general terms, though, in that they explore the inhuman transformation side of a strain of the exsurgent virus.  You're supposed to get a terrifying glimpse at the inhuman minds that tried to wipe out humanity.  It's just that the current rules totally let you play it Fishmalk.

That's a fine decision.  Asyncs are another layer to the rules that probably aren't worth adding in for the first scenario.

Re: OOC Thread
i had to look up fishmalk...what a fishmalk word.

i'm thinking if Oob is truly OUT, then we could stick to pregens just for a oneshot of acrimony.  though I've been browsing the .pdfs for literally years now, i've never actually played or gm'd a game...so i was hoping to get a grasp of it before trying to jump into more in-depth campaigns.

also if Oob it OUT, that leaves us with 3 players which means we'll need to recruit one more, ideally, or else go to it with just the three of you.

if Oob is IN, then I'm up for whatever people want - character mods, whatever, so that the characters are more balanced heading into the mission.

Oob? What say you?

I love it as a term.  Once you know what it means, almost every gamer immediately remembers playing with one in a game of some sort.  The "LOL RANDOM" player that thinks Chaotic Neutral means Insane Stupid.

Re: OOC Thread
I just realized I've had a fishmalk player for years, who I was always struggling to define with one word... Thanks Chi.

@Amal: if I remember correctly some critics called the Expanse "the best series you've never heard of". It's quite an abused expression, in my opinion, but in this case it fitted.

Re: OOC Thread
I am not out.  I did send you the character I made for your perusal and I am more than happy to work with it.

As for psionics I would prefer that someone use them. I don't see the point of "learning" a system when we cut out a major portion of it.

While Oob I'd not chaotic neutral he will be somewhat fishmalky.  He is still insanely curious about "man beings" and their amazing things.

Re: OOC Thread
Historically speaking, asyncs have always been a minor part of the game.  There is a whole chapter on them because they are complicated, but I wouldn't take that to mean they're "a major portion" of anything.  Most of the EP1 games I ran had no asyncs and you pretty much never have a situation where they are required (and they often end up being as much a burden as they are a benefit).

Unless someone just wants to try it, which is a different story.

Re: OOC Thread
Hmm, not sure, I only got to play once in 1st ed.  All the reading I did made it seem like it was a major theme in the game.  Isn't that what the existence of firewatch is all about? It isn't really a big issue anyway, I have never found them to be something I wanted to play.  :)

Don't worry, RL has a way of getting us away from games.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Ditto on the heads up. Those are all long term commitments and I don't see how we could ask you to commit to returning within a specific timeframe, so are we calling this done?

It's alright gm....:)  Thanks for letting us know.  I have been thinking about starting a game anyway.  Maybe I should get the rest of the rules read and start one up....:)

You'll almost certainly have players.  I'm having trouble getting the mental traction to run a EP game right now, what with all of the other options out there.

exactly, running CP2020 + life is crunchy enough.  I am however trying to start a group of PBtA games because they're much more rules-light and EP is...not.  If anyone's interested:
