The next day was long for the group between heading to the Lumber Camp and making sure they had begun recovery and the stronger ones were already preparing the shipment that was supposed to leave days ago. Kreed would be happy. At the groups suggestion the lumber camp posted guards and would tell Kreed to invest in carrier pigeons.

Later morning saw them head out towards Falcons Hollow. They made good time and a decision was reached to rest in the Hill country a few hours from The Hollow rather than push on and arrive after midnight.

The next morning saw the group greeted with mixed emotions. The looks on everyone's faces were a mixture of pleasure to see the group and extreme worry. People were going about quickly and with purpose. Guards were searching all places that were not easily seen. Culverts, low lying areas, bushes, dense foliage dilapidated buildings ..the cemetery...searches were going on everywhere.

Francis saw the guards running around and he became agitated. He shook his head.

He had been strangely silent on the return trip...like something was weighing heavily on his mind.

Arell. Nomerendal. Fidget. Dorak. this has been...strangely ...invigorating. but this isnt what I imagined going to explore old ruins. I fear I am going to have to part ways...at least for the moment. I need to go back to my studies and decide what I want from life. I foresee another emergency that will pull us back into the woods and I had not planned for this type of life

He shook hands and veered off to the north skirting town.

On shaking hands, Dorak responds "In truth, I will miss you, lad. Ye have a grasp on engineering that I'd love to be learning. Have you any treatises on mechanical theory I could borrow? I'm thinking a proper shrine to the Builder should have a library of texts on building things. But I understand feeling a wee bit overwhelmed. Torag bless ye."
After saying his goodbye, Dorak turns to view the antics and stops a passing guard. "Pardon me, lad. What are ye all looking for?"

A tall hooded traveler wandered into town soon after sunrise. He wore a heavy pack and carried a canvas wrapped bundle slung with cord.   Those who paid attention may have noticed him making a couple of polite inquiries. The traveler soon found himself at the door of a cottage on the edge of town.

"They're certainly looking for something. Or someone," Sara mused to the others. She had a number of things she wanted to accomplish here, but for now was most interested in what Dorak heard as a response.

A tear trickled down Nom's cheek. He wiped it away quickly, his kind heart showing on his shirtsleeve. "Francis, may your way be bright, I hope we meet again." Nom's little hand squeezed that of the eccentric young man in parting.

He watched the odd fellow make his way from the Hollow. He sighed heavily and turned back to the matter at hand.

"Has the well been poisoned again? What?" Then looking around he saw that Sara had the right of it. "What's going on now I wonder?"

"Hark! Guardsman!" Nom called out, approaching one of those searching. "Tell us if you can sir, what seems to be the concern?"

Arell had certainly worked Rolf through his paces this morning.  If the dog was going to keep hanging around, he was going to make sure said dog earned his keep.  As it stood, Rolf meandered generally by the old paladin looking for all the world like he'd been having the time of his life.

As Frank said his goodbyes Arell was of mixed feelings of the whole affair.  On one hand Frank had survived with them through far more dangers and perils than anyone deserved in their lives which made him a comrade at worst and brother-in-arms at best.  On the other hand Frank was...Frank.

Arell compromised with a hearty handshake and wellwishes for his future endeavors.

As the others addressed the guard, Arell felt a frown forming on his lips.

What fresh hell is this?

One of the guards who were searching looked up and seeing who was asking he said as he walked towards the group. ehh youre back. Im sure Kreed will want to know how it went. I think however more thsn that he may want your help again. Several Children, including his son, have gone missing. 

The mention of missing children brought a chill to Sara's spine that nothing else could. Her maternal instinct was strong, and honed by life in her Kellid tribe where everyone took a hand in raising the children, even the warrior-women.

She started asking questions of the guard and anyone else who would listen right away, including the tall traveler with heavy pack.

22:09, Today: Sara Dawnstar rolled 13 using 1d20+7.  diplomacy: gather information.

"But... huh?" It wasn't his most eloquent of exclamations, but it would have to do for a start. This was supposed to have been a relaxing homecoming, a time to collect a reward, soak in the nearby hotsprings for few days and spend the evenings at the Inn telling stories and spinning tunes... Only now another crisis had reared its head! Not the happy ending he'd been envisioning, not by a whisker nor by a tail!

"Missing? For how long? We've not been away for... perhaps a week?" The passing of time had become muddled in the little gnome's mind lately. "How many? Surely kids don't just disappear! In fact there's usually a goodly bit of general boisterousness and noise associated with any gaggle of youth. Speak up man! Who's in charge of the search?"

The Guard paused looking at Sara as she rattled off questions he said first Kreed told us to search everywhere. Look for any clues. He said look under every bush, in every ditch. in every building. Leave no stone unturned. The Five Kids that are missing have been seen together a lot. They are friends.

then he turned to Nomerendal as the Gnome came up Its been 5 days. The Kids didnt come home yesterday. This morning Each of the parents started asking around nd when they all realized it was the 5 the search began in earnest. Kreed Himself is giving the orders.

"If Kreed is giving the orders, maybe he knows more about this. Where they were seen last, and by whom? Let's go talk to him," she encouraged her new companions.

"Where do we find him?" she asked the guard, ready to move to speak to the leader.

The stranger stopped short of knocking in the cottage door when he saw the group assembled nearby.  He went over and addressed them.

"Greetings. I noticed quite a bit of commotion. What seems to be the problem?"

Nom noticed the stranger approaching and greeted him with a lingering bewilderment in his voice. "Hullo sir, we're still trying to discern as much ourselves. Seems as though..."

The gnome was about to say more, but suddenly clamped his mouth shut. After all this man was a stranger, certainly someone Nomerendal didn't know and that was to say he obviously wasn't from around here. Though his hood was pulled over his head, Nom thought he noted the tell-tale grace of the fey-lineaged. Quite probably an elf!

Suddenly feeling embarrassed about his suspicion, the little bard cleared his throat. "I beg your pardon sir, I realize you're not from around here, but even though we seem to be experiencing a rash of trouble in our little town, there's no need for rudeness, forgive me. My name is Nomerendal, how do you do? These are my friends..."

The stranger pulled back the hood of his cloak and revealed himself.   He was indeed, an elf. A bit shorter than average with violet eyes and copper colored hair pulled back in a short braid.  He wore well kept studded leather beneath is cloak and carried a longbow, along with a rapier on his hip.

"Pleased to meet you, Nomerendal.", he replied.

"My name is Tanien. And you are correct.  I have just arrived here this morning to visit my cousin Idris and his family. Perhaps you've heard of him."

The guard grew pale and seemed to shrink into his armor.

youre Idris Eaveswalkers Cousin? Kimi is one of the ones missing

"Sara," she replied after Nom was done, holding out a calloused hand to shake. Then she continued speaking apparently to herself, "No I'm not going to introduce you!"

"I don't know Idris, I don't know Kimi, but if there are children missing. If your niece is missing?" she shuddered. "I'm in for any search party."

"Yes. My cousin is Idris Eaveswalker.  Where is he this morning? Out looking for Kimi I would assume.", Tanien asked the guard.

You havent been in town in a while have you...No He had a falling out with Kitani, and went adventuring 2 years ago, and has not returned. Some think hes dead.

"It's about thirty/seventy odds," the older man with the dog added, "There is the unlikely option that he found his fortune as an adventurer...that's why little Kimi admires him so."

He holds out his hand to the stranger, "Arell Kirkwood, clerk and barrister to Falcon's Hollow."

Yep, definitely a clerk of some kind...you could tell by the greatsword and the armor.

His dog remains at a respectable distance, but it's obvious from the way its wagging its tail it really wants to meet the new person.

"No.  I haven't been here for several years.  Still, I'm not surprised.  Falcon Hollow was one of his longest stays that I know of. No matter now.", Tanien said, sounding a bit disappointed.

"Back to business, who was this Kreed person you were mentioning?"

The dwarf interjects "we need to speak with Kreed in any case. I assume Kitani is also searching? Might want to talk to her as well."

"Let's go see this Kreed person first.   I'll talk to Kitani and maybe the rest of the parents later."

"Agreed, Kreed first. Then the other searchers, then some other kids who hadn't gone missing," she counted the options off on one hand.

"Kids always seem to know where other kids are getting into trouble. At least they did back home in my tribe."

The group moved through the town gates and began to turn to go up hil to the Inner Compound of The Lumber Consortium and the town was very active for this late in the day. searching was going on everywhere. Suddenly a few people recognized you and they began to run to you asking for your help

One portly woman Arell recognized as the Dana Jabbs, wife of the town butcher pushed through tears streaming down her face. Arell Arell You have to help me. help us. The Children The Chiildren have gone missing. . My Mikra. You know he cant do things for himself help us.

Arell and Nomerendal know Mikra Jabbs had a difficult birthing and as a result has mental deficiencies. Hes as good natured and as good hearted as they come and has always been a beacon of sunshine to the town. coming and talking always with a smile on his face. Arell has read stories to him a time or two. Most folks in the town have. Mikra has a crush on Kimi and she was always looking out for him. Funny enough, Jurin Kreed, Thuldin Kreed's son, had taking a liking to the older Mikra and was usually by his side when he wasnt at home.

Arell holds up a hand, "Easy Dana," he says, "I just found out about it a little bit ago.  We're going to talk to Kreed now and see what we can do to help."

Kimi, Jurin, and now Mikra...  This is beginning to sound like a childish jaunt gone very wrong.

He gives her a reassuring smile, "Don't fret.  We'll see them returned soon enough."

"I'm so sorry Ma'am, I can't imagine how hard this must be," she offered a hug to the woman, but understood if she didn't want to embrace this strange warrior woman and didn't push it.

"I'm a friend of Arell's," she continued smiling at the often-grouchy clerk for just a second. "We're going to do everything we can to help you. To find your Mikra and the others."

"Any information you can tell us would be helpful. Who saw them last?" she asked the woman. "What were they doing? Had anyone heard the group of them making any plans? Do they have friends who haven't gone missing? We should try to talk to them."

A couple of locals pipe up in turn saying they saw the the 5 kids talking down by the old Mill.

Someone else says Savram Vade...Shavaros Vade, the mysterious wizard who sold Fidget a couple scrolls, his son was with them.

Savram is 9 years old and is always trying to tag along with the older kids. Quiet and studious not much is known about the youngling.

Then Ralla, one if the women who work at The Sitting Duck steps forward and says her brother Hollin was among the 5. The hard woman with the flashing green eyes, who the town knew made her living in the oldest profession to care for her brother since their parents died in a lumber accident when logs fell off a wagon crushing them.

Hollin fancied himself a woodcarver and sold small animals he carved at the lower market. He is only 10 though. A red haired freckle face boy with a quick temper.

Ralla said Kreed is only concerned about finding his own son. he hadnt mention ours at all. yull find Hollin wont you Arell

Arell isn't quite sure what to do with Ralla when dealing with her in this context.

They were...close, as far as these things went.  But the relationship was so strictly professional it had been a few years before he realized that she and Hollin were related.

"We'll find them, Ralla." Arell reassured, "And Kreed may be a selfish bastard, but he's had several days head start on us, so it still behooves us to check in with him...if only to know what places not to look."

And Hollin, the entertainer's brother.

Give them a few years of training and they might being doing this shit instead of him.

He turned to the people that mentioned the mill, "Does Kreed know about this?"

The look that followed was obvious that they had no idea if Kreed knew or not

Arell's expression of disapproval was all he needed, no "face-palm" necessary.

"...I am disappointed in you." The paladin said evenly, "You may hate Kreed and his men.  But they are HERE, there's a lot of them, and Kreed has a vested interested in seeing this task done.  If you really wanted those kids found, you would have used that resource to the best of your abilities.  They could have been back home by now if you had just told Kreed where to start looking."

And with that, Arell starts walking at speed toward Kreed's headquarters.  Rolf at least trotting along at his heels.

Tanien quietly followed along with the group.  Not knowing the worried mothers, the best he could do was to give a knowing nod and his own worried frown.

Nom joined Sara in reassuring the locals. They all knew him and he them. The little gnome had watched these children grow up, had performed for them, pulled coins out of their ears and so forth. There was certainly a level of anxiety and concern on his part, and though it might not match that of the parents and relatives, folks around here were his family in the years since his parents had passed on.

"We'll find them. Please, Arell's right for the most part, if anybody knows or hears or discovers anything, please let us know quickly!"

"Arell! Wait up!" Nom shouted and scampered off after his old friend.

Dorak, who doesn't really know these people, isn't blinded by personal concern. Instead he looks at each face in passing and reads their body language. He notes the actions of folks who appear to be withholding information, if any.

Sara followed Arell closely, her strange lack of coordination slowing her, but not so much that she couldn't keep up. she was interested in hearing what Kreed had to say.

Dorak looked over the crowd and saw nothing but genuine concern exhibited.

Making their way up to the compound they saw Kreed standing in front of his house. Kitani Eaveswalker was talking animatedly with him as well as several other townsfolk. Standing a short distance away looking on unemotionally was the Wizard Shavaros

Payday Teedum stood to the left and back half a step from Kreed, as well as a few other guards.

Kreed saw the group and smiled. well look what we have here. I see youve lost 3 of your group in the search for my lumberjacks. Did you fix the problem? Will my shipments start again?

If anything Arell's frown deepened.  Kreed's priorities had always been skewed, but this was a new low.

"Yes, Kreed, once the men recover from almost being eaten by giant spiders, I'm sure they'll get right back to work." He replied, general cantankerousness masking his overt sarcasm somewhat, "My concern right now is the missing kids.  The townsfolk say you've started canvasing.  How much ground have you covered?"

oh yeah. that. that fool son of mine gone and got himself lost. for a split second Arell could see the mask of incivility slip and the eyes of a worried father stared back then it was gone as fast as you could blink and in its place was a dead pan uncaring face.

you neednt trouble yourselves about this. my men will handle it. they are close to finishing searching the town vicinity them they will spiral out further and further until we find a sign. We've got this.

They clearly didn't have it. She bit her tongue before explaining it to the boss.

"Let's be on our way then," she said tugging at Arell's arm. "They've clearly got this." She smiled graciously at Kreed and then slapped herself on the side of her head trying to silence the voice there.

Once away from Kreed she'd explain to her friends what she thought they should do.

"They're doing a brute force search. We can be smarter. Let's head for the mill where they were spotted gathering and see if we can talk to anyone who saw them there. Or other kids who heard what they were doing there."

And there went Arell's opinion of Kreed as a savvy businessman.  Congratulations!  You searched the entire town without asking a single person a single damn question.  To what depth of stupidity will you sink next?

"I see..." the clerk replied, the picture of civility, "Well, we're going to go try a little further afield.  We'll let you know if we find anything."

He nodded to the worried parents and headed off towards the old mill.

"...last time I defend that moron." he muttered none too quietly once they were out of earshot.

"I must speak with Kitani for a moment.  I will catch up with you very soon.", Tanien said to Sara and Arell"

He walked over to Kitani and greeted her warmly.

"Kitani. I just got into town and heard about the Kimi.  It pains me to hear such news."

Nom had to give Arell and Sara high marks for the way they were comporting themselves. Subtlety and patience weren't really their strong points. Usually they tended to punctuate their speaking with a sharpened tongue or the sharp end of a sword. He'd need to congratulate them later however.

"Actually Kreed, I believe we've completed, quite admirably, the task you set forth regarding your men and the camp. There's a matter of payment needing to be settled. As it appears you have the search and so forth completely in hand, I'll assume that now is as good a time as any to settle up?"

Kitani sees Tanien and a wild mixture of emotions play across her face, relief...anger...hopeful ...fear ...she walks up to him well met Tanien. i didnt expect you to come by. whats ot been 8 years since you were here last?! Have you heard anything if Idris?...


Kreed look at the gnome like he was a bug...a bothersome but...

yes quite. 600 wadnt it? 100 per?

"I am traveling south on business and thought I would visit as you were on my path. I'm sorry, Kitani. No.  We have heard nothing of Idris back in Greengold.  I just learned of him leaving earlier tody. ", Tanien replied, an answer she probably half expected.

"Enough about Idris for now. He can take care of himself.  I'm more concerned about Kimi.  Everyone seems to believe that she and the other children are in danger."

Dorak looks at Nom. "You're usually the lad that does the negotiatin', now, aren't Ye lad? Was that what was offered?" The dwarf rumbles "If Tarack's in town, I'll have to see if me cousin will let me work out of his home. Got to put my anvil somewhere."

Fidget still trying to understand how all these people could just loose five children was hard for to grasp. Arell, Nom wait for us. I want to speak with the wizard before we take off. He may know some thing or no of some way we can discern at least which way the children went.

Sara would you come with me, to head are better then one when solving a problem. She asked as she was pulling her away from the group and towards the wizard.

Sarvaros I'm so sorry what can we do to help? Have you heard anything? Can you think of any place they might have gone or even a spell that could help us locate or maybe track the kids? After a pause she adds. Of course it goes with out saying that we are going out and finding all the children as soon as we've spoken to everyone here,

Fidget reaches out and takes one of the wizards big hands in both of her tiny ones then looking up into the old mans face, as tears trickle down her cheeks. I'll bring Savram home safe I promise.

Practically dragged by the little gnome, Sara went along to see the Wizard. She still wanted to talk to children around town.

someone who would better than me who had decent diplomacy should roll gather information. I botched it when I rolled earlier.

"That's very generous of you, thank you. As you noted, we've lost three of our companions... If I might simply request the payment they would have received, it would go far to help offset the losses and resources spent, as well as the supplies and incidentals which we understood would be reimbursed as well. So six hundred, more three and another to cover our costs, makes an even thousand gold. Certainly a good deal for you to have the logging shipments back on schedule?"

Nomerendal, having learned his lesson in trying tricksome tactics against Payday, spoke simply and businesslike in his request.

"I'd be happy to accept the full amount now so that you and your men can get back to controlling the situation, or rather keeping the situation controlled, erm... finding your son and the other children I mean..."

Kreed looked at the slight Gnome and his gaze was a steely glint. and long moments passed and then with a glance around the crowd he growled Pay them Payday.

The gruff body guard moved forward and motioned the gnome to follow him to the structure that served as the Consortium's headquarters here in The Hollow, where he pulled 1000 gold out in the form of 100 platinum pieces from a wall safe and handed it to Homerendal. Dorak and Arell had gone with Nomerendal.


Meanwhile Tanien continued to talk with Kitani. worry flitted into the Clothiers eyes as she began to tell the story how Kimi had left in the morning like she always did after her chores were finished and gone to play with her friends. She always came back at sunset, but yesterday she hadnt. Kitani had spent a fitful night trying to find her and knocking on doors. The only clue she could give was that Kimi kept talking about being an adventurer like her dad.

Savaros looked down at Fidget with a deadpan face showing absolutely no emotion. If he hadnt been outside listening to Kreed, the diminutive sorceress would think he didnt care. Then the arcane caster said thank you. Ive told Savram many times to stay away from those other children. Its best to seclude yourself for your studies. People will always lead you astray. Hurt you. I wouldnt know where he might have gone, nor do my studies lend themselves to that sort of magic.

"Did savram have any other friends? apart from the others who have gone missing? We would like to talk to them."

There had to be more than five children in this town. And kids always knew when other kids were getting into trouble.

Savaros had to look up to see the eyes of the warrior woman and he kind of shrunk inward at her straight forward manner.

I would not know was all he said

"I know that words do little to ease your worries, Kitani. I promise to do my best to find Kimi. It appears that those adventurers are planning to search for the children, and I'm joining them. I won't let them quit., Tanien said to her.

"Do you know where they usually played? Are there other children that were part of her group but not missing?  Is there anyone in town who she might look up to as a mentor to teach her adventuring?", he asks, hoping for clues.

After Nom picks up their pay, Dorak heads to High Market for the warhammer he had commissioned. Once that is secured, he asks around to see if any merchants had seen the  children, and if so, where and when.

"Thank you for understanding," was all Nomerendal said in reply to Kreed. Fully aware of the situation he'd leveraged, the little gnome wasn't about to push things any further... at this point. He thanked Payday and quickly scampered after his companions before either of them might change their mind and send a very large boot in the direction of his posterior.

With Dorak to aid him, Nom asked about a bow while they were about. He was looking for something a bit bigger than the little hunting bow he currently carried. Something which might pack a little more punch and shoot just a might further, though truth be told, his best chance of increasing his lethality would be more practice and some exercise to build up his bow arm...

Dorak suggests a crossbow, which has a longer reach than comparative longbows and packs a heavier punch with its metallic bolts. He introduces Nom to the Weaponsmith he contracted, and asks if there might be anvils for sale in the low market.

Kitani tells Tanien that the normal group of kids Kimi hung around were those 4. but yes perhaps some of the other kids might know something. They seemd to gravitate to the old mill on the banks of the river.

In reply to DM Dread (msg # 56):

"In that case, we'll talk to some of the other kids and then start our search at the old mill. Our family's blood flows through Kimi's veins.  I will not abandon family. You as well, Kitani, regardess of Idris' foolishness. As soon as I have any news, you will be the first to hear it." , Tanien promised.


"You know, I was expecting a more pleasant situation before I arrived. I brought gifts for your family.  A bottle of brandy for Idris, a bolt of fine threaded linen for you."

He knelt down dug through his bundle.  He removed a necklace of some sort

"And this pendant for Kimi.  Would you take the rest back to the house for me?  I'll give the pendant to Kimi myself."

Tanien carefully wrapped it up and put it in his breast pocket. With that, he turned and quickly left to join the rest of the party at the mill.

"I guess that would be expecting too much," she snapped at the wizard's reply. "Come on Fidget. Let's go meet at the mill, see what we can find out down there."

She led the way down to the old mill.

Nom chatted with the smith Dorak introduced him to. Not wanting to waste a lot of time that would be better spent looking for the missing children, Nom tried to act quickly with his selection of a bow. He opted for the strongest he could manage to pull, and attempted to trade-in the little hunting bow he'd practiced with and used up to now.

it didnt take long to pick a bow and an anvil and drop the anvil off at Taracks, who of course was absent. Then they went to the old mill just outside of town about a few hundred yards downriver towards the forest. An old building sat out of the wall that had 3 floors and a mill wheel still turning with the current. A group of 6 kids between the ages 9 and 13 sat throwing stones into the river and talking. Youd seen them around.

Nearby several of Kreeds guards were going floor by floor through the old mill.

Sara approached the children at the mill. The statuesque woman crouched down a little to get on their level, then began asking them to share what they knew about the missing kids, "So we can help find them." Nobody would be in trouble, we just need to know.

09:25, Today: Sara Dawnstar rolled 24 using 1d20+7.  diplomacy - gather information (talking to children).

It took some coaxing but once started it was like a floodgate as the kids all started sharing what they knew...the answer was the 5 kids went to stay the night at Elaras Halfway House. The ruins of an orphanage that some Giants had raised a few years back. It was fire damaged and supposed to be haunted. And the kids went to prove their bravery to each other. It was about 4 hours away. And the kids would've been back hours ago if there was nothing wrong

After a quick stop for directions, Tanien soon affived at the old mill.  He had his pack and bow, ready to leave immediately if necessary.


He looked around and recognized Sara from earlier so he went over and waited patiently as she questioned the children.

Fidget told the group she would meet them at the mill and left the group to pick up something she had purchased before they left the first time.

"Thank you children for telling us about the orphanage. No doubt somebody got their pantsseat caught on a branch and everyone's trying to get him down." Nom smiled and waved the children off. "Now get back home and let the Consortium guards do their job. Go on now, maybe we can all go fishing when I get back!"

When the children had scampered back toward the Hollow, Nom pulled his friends close as well as the newcomer. "Listen, I've got a suspicion Kreed's not being completely forthright with us. Frankly, I'd like for us to go find those kids before his brutes figure out they're not here. Another good pay day from... Payday, would certainly be welcome. If Kreed's men find them, we'll get nothing, no matter how helpful we are. I say we slip quietly out of town and get to the orphanage! Tanien, you're certainly welcome to come along and we'll give you a share of whatever we can wheedle out of Kreed when we get back..."

"I appreciate the invitation, friend Nomerendal.  The fact is that you would be hard-pressed to keep me away.  One of the children, Kimi, is family after all." Tanien replied.

Dorak returns with Nom in time to hear the plan. "Aye, I can be heading out." he sighs. "I was hopin' fer time for a project, but maybe I can get a local craftsman to do the job. Can Ye give me an hour?" Dorak mentally reviews who is town seemed a decent enough armorer to do the custom job he already bought the materials for.

"Very well.  As much as I would like to leave now, it would do no good to rush in ill-prepared."

"I'm ready to go, but let's try not to let Kreed's men catch wind that we'll be off soon. I'd like to get to the orphanage before them. While you're tying up your loose ends, I'll keep a watch over the mill and see what progresses here. Anyone else ready to head out can accompany me if you'd like. Don't dawdle!!"

The little gnome crept closer to the mill and found some cover from which he might observe without being noticed. He wanted to see what Kreed's men were doing and if possible overhear their conversations!

To this end he'll get as close as seems reasonable... When the others are near their time to return, he'll head back and meet up with them in order to head to the orphanage. Feel free to handwave ahead if it makes sense to keep the game moving GM.

"We keep doing stuff like this and I'm going to have to commission some better armor."  Arell grumbles.  "I can be ready to go now, or in an hour, just so long as I know what we're doing."

Fidget was quick about what she had to do, picking up her new mount then going to the livery stable, and getting the rest of her equipment, while there she has a wonderful idea purchasing a second set of barding. She didn't waist much time all and was mounted and on her way to the old mill in just over an hour.

On the ride to the mill she was considering how to the old Paladin, She hated the fact that because of her most of the group was keeping a secret from him. She made up her mind that where ever the road found them tonight she would sit down with Arell and tell the paladin every thing.

When the young sorceress came up the path to the mill and saw the others, she was riding a large dark gray beast of a dog. the leather armor the dog wore had been died gray to match it's coloring.Hey guy's, sorry I'm late. This my new dog Smoke I had him and his stuff on order since before we left town the first time and he  was finally delivered. isn't he cool. I sure hope my puppy and Arells like each other, So smoke will have some one to play with. As usual the green haired little gnome girl was gabbering a mile a minute.

Rolf wandered over and sniffed at the new dog, tail wagging lazily but picking up speed as they got closer.

Hey big guy, I got a present for your puppy to. I thought he would be a little safer with some armor, The way we've been getting into fights with everything we meet. Help me get it unpacked, and I'll show you what the guy at the livery stabled taught me about adjusting the straps. Fidget jumps off her riding dog and begins to loosen the straps on the saddle bags,

Arell shrugs and does so, "You didn't have to do this Fidget, but I appreciate all the same."

Who knows if Rolf will though...dog's been doing fine for years without it and he might not like the extra weight.

Still if it keeps him alive, he's just going to have to get used to it.

"Wow Cousin! What a great idea!" Nomerendal exclaimed when he saw Fidget ride up on her newly acquired mount. The barding was a great idea too and would certainly help keep her pet safe.

"Heya Smoke," Nom said to the dog, reaching to let the animal sniff him. "You're a big fellow! Yeah, I'm not so bad..." Nom fished for a bit of dried meat to make a friendship offering.

He then helped Arell get Rolf outfitted, chattering wildly about training the Ranger's dog to ride like Smoke. The little gnome didn't realize what a rodeo that might be, but it did appear as if the dog was enjoying the attention if not the new digs.

The group gathered just a little away from the old Mill, watching the children skip rocks into the river while a squad of guards searched the dilapidated structure for clues, too arrogant to ask the children playing within 50 yards.

It was early afternoon. And the group trudged out. Tanien, new to the group and much faster than everyone else except Sara, who even with a limp was faster than the rest.

Most of the group was slower, Fidget, Nomerendal, and Dorak because of the ancestry, though Fidget could have rode, she wanted to let the dogs get acquainted. Arell in his armor was more constrained.

It was a 4 hour walk to within a few hundred yards of the forest edge when they came to the side road that moved over a rise to where Elaras Halfway House was.

They'd come down the road just a week ago looking for cures but hadn't turned toward the ruins of the orphanage that had dated to reside a stone's throw from the ruins that had been ravaged by marauding Giants and a fire.

They turned towards the ruins, the sun beginning to set.

It was a good group she had found. The dogs were going to outnumber the people soon at the rate they were going, but she could live with that. Both were cute and she was happy to give scritches behind the ear to either of them if they came up close enough to get them. She was happy, despite their grim mission, and despite the voice in her head. She was even getting used to that, truth be told. The constant humming in her mind, threats of dark catastrophe coming to devour her yada yada yada. All talk no action.

"We aren't going to have much luck exploring ruins in the dark. Let's press on and get to them, see if the kids are there. If not we should camp next to them, make a proper search of them at first light."

As they approach the ruins, Dorak peers at the ground, seeking signs of children or other activity. His sharp eyes notice anything unusual about stone, as well.

Perception 17 on d20+9. 19 vs unusual stonework.

"I'm beginning to see a pattern with our undertakings, we need to work on scheduling..."

Nom waited patiently while Tanien and the others scouted around a bit. "Again my friends, I feel as though we need to keep our head start on Kreed's men. And if the children are here, they're probably in trouble, and we should go after them tonight. Let's at least go poke around and see if there are any clues. If Kreed's men come clomping around they may not even let us continue our search..."

"If they get too close, I doubt it would be too difficult to scare them off.  They can't be that brave, considering that you folks have been doing some of Kreed's heavy lifting." , Tanien replied.

I think sleeping for the night before entering would be best if someone or something took the children they did it for a reason. I think a few hours sleep would be better then walking in exhausted.

"Bullies." Nom replied, as if that explained everything. Seeing Tanien's arched eyebrow, the gnome expounded, "They're more scared of Kreed than us, I'm sure of that, and if he gave orders, they'd follow them. Besides, if they come along and rescue the children then there goes any reward we might get! We're certainly here to save some kids, but we've gotta pay the bills after all, it seems as though our willingness to help is in high demand, and I for one, haven't played a tune in Jack'a'napes or the Duck in quite a while. I think we need to look out for ourselves for sure, and after the incident with the Logger Camp and Kreed's attitude, I'm not convinced he'd save only his boy and forget about the rest..."

Putting his small fists on his hips, Nom snorted, "Exhausted? From what Cousin? Have you been glopping things with those acid balls of yours along the way or something? C'mon, where's your sense of adventure?"

Adventure. There was that word again. More and more it seemed less like something Nom was seeking to find, but rather something that was finding him...

"Let's at least go look around a bit, if we can't find anything useful, we can start again when the sun comes up..." he urged.

"Agreed.  I'd like to think that we've done everything possible today before retiring for the night.   Let's stow our packs and take a look." , Tanien replied.

Okay cousin in for a penny in for a pound.

Coming over the Hill the group saw the charred ruins of the halfway house/orphanage that had been built by an ex adventurer. Why she chose the edge of the forest is beyond anyone, and its obvious by its state that it was the wrong choice. Boulders thrown by Giants littered the grounds and all that remained were partial walls blackened by fire...the grounds were a former husk of what it once was.

Tanien stared at the huge boulder before him and the others scattered around the area.   He was a bit awestruck that a living being could have lifted them, let alone hurled them through the air.

"I've never seem anything like this before. It doesnt't seem possible that something could lift that boulder.", Tanien said quietly, thinking out loud.

I wonder how big the giants were, what kind and how many? I bet they were real real big probably big as houses. The people that have come to know Fidget know her rambling is the way she copes with hostile situations.

We need to think like kids to find kids, if I was a kid I would want to check out deep scary holes in the ground. With that said Fidget rides Smoky over towards the hole in the ground. (moves to 27/19) looking for any clues as she moves.


16:01, Today: Fidget Mossgrower rolled 18 using 1d20+5. looking for clues from the kids (Perception).

Dorak starts looking among the felled building for signs of the missing kids. Although not trained at tracking, he was comfortable among fallen stonework and knew what signs to look for.

Survival 14 on d20+3.
Perception 18 on d20+9. 20 vs Stonework.

"I'll make a circle around the building and look for tracks.  Call out if you find anything.", Tanien declared.   With that, he turned and made a slow counter-clockwise loop around the ruins of the orphanage.

Nom's woodscraft ended where his fishing pole ended. He really didn't have the experience nor the skill to help out much with tracking and so forth, but he wasn't half bad and noticing things that were out of place. He waited patiently while his more able companions did what it was that they do best.

"Let's not get too spread out fellas..."

The party spreads out Tanien looks at the boulders and imagines the giants that threw them and then begins to look around.

Dorak moves to examine the fallen columns first and knows this was human stonework. Then he notices that theres nailmarks in the columns from claws on feet patterned after a canine.

Fidget looks down in the hole and sees where boulders crushed this portion of the building causing it to collapse into a cistern.


The others moved forward on alert, but as Tainein  starts to circle around the building and Nomerendal calls out for everyone to stick together...The Elven Scout pauses and looks hard at the top of the stairs spying the furtive figure of a young girl peering around the doorway at him before she jerked her head back in.

"Young lady! Please stay. We mean you no harm.  Are you looking for Kimi and the others?", Tanien said to the girl as he moved slowly towards the stairs.

He waved to get the attention of any nearby party members and gestured towards the stairs.

The paladin came over as quietly as his armor would allow, "See something, Tan?"

Hearing Tanien call out, Dorak moves closer to look up where indicated. He mutters "found claw marks. Canine - like feet. Couldn't tell if they were big like Gnolls or smaller like kobolds, though."

"Or actual wolves," she replied to Dorak, looking out at the gloomy forest. Then she went back to searching the ruins as best she could.

She heard Tanien call towards the girl, and broke off her search of the ruins to move towards him.

"Ah! Really? Well then, let me have a look!" Nom trotted to where he could see the opening in which the girl had peered from.

"Hullo there? Won't you come out? You're not in trouble, are you alright? Please, Rolf here would like to meet you. And this is Smoke, he's awful friendly too. Won't you come meet them?"

The little gnome plied every bit of persuasion, short of... cheating, that he could muster.


Diplomacy (Oratory): Take 10 for 19 total...

coming out from behind the facade of the crumbled orphanage was a a rail-thin, green-eyed girl of fourteen years, although she is particularly diminutive for her age. Her mouse-brown
hair is a tangle of twigs and brambles and her face is smudged with dark stains. Her back, arms, and legs are covered with brutal scars from some form of ill treatment. She holds a rag doll in hands as if it were some form of sustenance.

Dorak looks concerned, saying "Little one, I'm a Healer. Will you allow me to treat those scars to make sure that they are not infected?"

"Merciful Abadar..." Arell breathes...

Anathema, that's what this was...  The god of civilization was not known for his compassion, but that was because under good and just laws this kind of shit shouldn't happen!!!.  Hunger and Poverty were NOT part of the ideal city. And while Abadar acknowledged that the ideal didn't always happen, he also charged his followers to correct those failings whenever possible.

Falcon's Hollow was a town small enough that Arell knew almost everyone by name.  He had been here fifteen years--longer than the girl had probably been alive--in a position where nearly every important document, from birth to marriage to death, passed through his fingers.  How had this girl slipped through his influence so poorly to end up in this state?

Someone had screwed up, and someone had better hope Arell never figured out exactly who they were.

But that was on the back burner for now.  Starving child now.  Once Dorak is done with the check-up, Arell digs around in his pack for food.  The rations weren't exactly tasty, but they were better than nothing.

"Here," he says gently, holding a portion out to her, "You must be hungry."

As concerned as Arell was, but not wanting to crowd the girl, Sara hung back and merely smiled weakly at her. "We should get her back to town before we continue. This is no place for a vulnerable little one." she announced looking around at the smashed orphanage.

Nom tried to keep his concern from showing on his face. He waited for Dorak and Arell to provide immediate respite, and then he asked, "Can you tell us your name? How do you happen to be here?"

Arell and Dorak were quick to move forward and begin up the steps offering healing and food.

The little girl moved in the doorway and wiped her face with her sleeve. She looked down at the ground and back up at the group.

Rolf moved up next to Arell sniffing the air.

Nomerendel asked her name, as the others hung back.

The girl said hesitantly Jeva.

This little girl, taller than Nomerendal and Fidget, but not as much as Dorak had seen far better days. Her hair was unkempt. She hadnt seen a bath in months. maybe longer.

When the Giants attacked, a long time ago. Elara took as many as she could into the basement. Most died. I lived. Ive been here since. Hiding mostly.

Sara looked at Rolf, then back at the girl. The dog seemed to be unsure of her. She wasn't sure why, but her people knew to trust an animal's instincts. While the others questioned Jeva, she crouched beside Rolf and scratched his ears, trying to reassure the dog.

"Where is the basement?" she asked the girl, thinking it might be intact after the fire.

Fidget steps up be side Nom, Have you seen any other children around here lately?

"Jeva, we have lots of questions for you, don't be scared alright? We're looking for some other children, children from Falcon's Hollow. Is-is Elara here?"

When Sasah asked where the basement was a flickered look of ...pain? crossed Jeva's face before she answered Its over there., she pointed behind her and to her right. I dont go in there now. too many spiders. then to Fidget she said  Yes. a group of children ...5 of them came here last night. I was scared. they didnt see me. They were captured by little Dragon men and taken back to what one of the dragon men said was 'The Crucible' I stayed hidden. so they didnt get me too.

she looked at Nomerendel and almost smiled at what he said looked down and back up and said in return I wont be scared. you all seem nice. as she took the beef jerky Arell offered and began to eat slowly. savoring every bite. she shook her head when Elara was mentioned Shes Dead. Everyone else is dead. just me left. I hide better than they did.

Dorak casts a Detect Magic as he tries to gauge the child's honesty. He then starts looking around for tracks. And tries to figure out what kind of creatures these 'dragon men' could be. "These Dragon men....were they more Sara's height, or Fidget's?" he asks, pointing to each in turn.

"Did you see which way the little dragon men went?" he asked gently.

Chewing the beef jerky with abandon she said between chews They were Like her and him pointing at Nomerendal and Fidget. Then she looked at Arell and pointed to the forest to answer his question.

Dorak deduces "kobolds...it must be. Jeva, can you show me how you get down to the basement from here? And were any of the kobolds dressed in robes or carrying long sticks?" Dorak movers forward to bend down near Nom's ear. He whispers "the girl is lying about something. Don't know what."

Nom nodded, the smile never leaving his face.

"Jeva, I think you and I ought to be friends. Would you like that? Would you like to be friends with me, and with dear cousin Fidget? Would you like to be friends with me and Fidget and Sara? Tanien quietly watched and listened to as they party asked questions and the girl answered. So far, he they hadn't missed anything and the girl seemed truthful.

When the dwarf leaned over and whispered, Fidgets face also stayed unchanged, here eyes began to scan the area. Let her cousin work on the child, if some thing was up she didn't want to be caught off guard.

As they draw closer to the trap door, Dorak says "Jeva? From the looks of things, the fires that destroyed this place happened quite some time ago. Any food would have been destroyed. What have you eaten? How have you survived? Or did the Wererat help you out?"

Tanien follows Dorak and Jeva to the trap door.  When they got there, he examined it carefully. Jeva had said that there were spiders down there but that might not be the only thing.

Nomerendal shrugged at Dorak when she wasn't looking.

"We were at the Crucible not that long ago..." he shuddered, thinking about the loss of a couple companions up there. "I don't recall any of us seeing any signs of Kobolds or other... Dragonmen, though I think her description fits Kobolds best. If she's not mistaken, we've a long way to go..."

He followed the others as they began to look for sign, but wary of Dorak's warning, Nomerendal kept a careful eye on Jeva.

Spiders. Why did it have to be spiders? The voice in her head mocked her, but she ignores it, following tanien to investigate the basement.

18:28, Today: Sara Dawnstar rolled 11 using 1d20+4.  Perception, investigate basement.

Dorak looked at Jeva and asked her what she ate to survive This and that. I catch things mostly. her mannerisms said that it was completely true...at the mention of the wererat, who Dorak knew was a days travel or more to the north, she stammered for  a second then said simply I do not know who youre talking about. and where it appeared the the truth, there was something that crossed her face...

Tanien came forward checking for taps and finding none he went to lift the door. A relatively small storage basement was below. barrels and crates that had been savagely opened lined the walls. A small pile of bones was on one side laying amid the crates and barrels. The bloated rotting corpse of a woman lay close to the rampway going up. a set of silvery manacles dangled from the ceiling.

Jeva looked away apparently moved with memories

Rolf began sniffing the air near the rampway and a low growl came out of his mouth.

"Manacles in the basement? To hold someone down here. But silver? That's hideously expensive and impractical. Silver bends more easily than iron, so it's a bad choice for restraints. The only reason one would use silver is..." Dorak looks at Jeva with a sudden realization. "Jeva, did Elara keep a lycanthrope in her basement at any time?"

"Is this a were-creature then?" Nom asked the follow up, pointing at the dead woman. He noted the torn up barrels and crates.

"Jeva... are you... do you suffer from lycanthropy? If so, maybe we can help you..."

Sara tensed at the suggestion in Nom's question. Her hand tightened on her weapon. Surely this little girl wasn't a threat. Was she?

"You know, we've met a lycanthrope recently. He is a fair ways off, but do you think this could be about him instead?"

She didn't take her eyes off the girl as she asked though.

Fidget can feel the tension building slowly she eases her mount back a few feet and goes on the defensive watching for the ambush she is sure is about to be sprung on her and her friends.

Arell frowned, this seemed an odd line for the conversation to be taking.

That said if said girl was some kind of were-creature, it made things more complicated, but then again, if that's the reason the "dragon-men" left her, then he should thank Abadar that at least they had a witness.

Still, this whole thing was getting complicated in the worst of ways.  The paladin takes a step back and tries to give the girl some space.  Or as much as he can with Rolf sniffing at her.

Tanien closed the trap door and stood on it to make sure nothing could come up, just in case.  He stood quietly, waiting for the others to resolve the situation with the girl.

Turning and in a calm level voice, Dorak asks Jeva about a Lycanthope being kept in Elara's basement, his eyes tell the tale of what he thinks though, and the girl sniffs the air in an odd manner.

Taking a step towards her, Nomerendal asks if she is that Lycanthrope and says the group could help her....she looks around slighlty afeared.

Sara eyed the slight girl with a steady gaze mentioning the wererat they had met again.

Fidget guided Smoke to where she could see the girl clearly. It was clear Smoke wasnt sure of the girl either as he kept sniffing the air.

Arell stepped to the side, keeping a few feet of distance between him and the girl and looked at the others and Rolf unsure of this avenue...

Rolf began to growl low in his throat.

Tanien shut the trap door and stood atop it, holding his bow at the ready.

Jeva growled once and said in a throaty voice Fine. if this is where it happens. this is where it happens. I wanted to pick you prey off one at a time...but now is as good as any! and before their very eyes fur grows onto her body. Her face stretches and elongates into a wolf like snout with a mouth filled with sharp teet. Her limbs lengthen and her body is altered and gone is the shape of a little girl and in its place is a wolf standing like a woman....she shakes her head once and growls.

Parties actions. Hers was changing shape.

"Oh no... Jeva, we... we can help you! All of this, this isn't your fault, please let us help you!"

And then the little gnome began to sing the subtle tones of a lullaby but with a tempo that was anything but lulling...

Tanien saw that the group did not immediately intend to attack the Were.  He decided to let the situation play out.  He dropped his bow and drew his dagger. Then he tried to move quietly around Sara to try get behind Jeva.

Sara happily took Tanien's spot to get some room and make room in front for Arell, as she stepped back and drew her weapon. She entered her battle rage, happy to take the young werewolf's word that she was there to attack and devour them. This was self-defense.

Then cleaves a grievous blow across the wolfwyf's withers (correct terminology is important) with little more than a sorrowful expression.

The little sorceress doesn't hesitate, she just unleashes a ball of force at the little ware wolf.

Dorak chanted and the group felt the blessings of Torag flow over them.

Nomerendal quickly looked around, and not wanting to put his back to the crater to his rear he moved towards the slight stairs to his right, behind his friend Arell as he started singing a particularly inspirational song.

putting his bow up, he drew his dagger in a fluid motion and moved around trying to be quiet his boot scuffed on some rubble and a rock slipped out and bounced off another making a clatter kind of noise as he moved toward flanking. Jeva quickly glanced his way.

Sara was going to back up but realized she would not be able to attack the werewolf from that vantage point, As Jeva glanced at Tanien, Sara swung her Bardiche. There was resistance as normally it took silver weapons to pierce the hide of a werewolf. But the force of the blow was enough to cause bright read blood to flow were it struck her in the side.

Arell sighed heavily and stepped forward bringing his sword around in a swing that smashed into the girl turned wolf's leg, causing Jeva to howl in painful rage from the force. Rolf obeyed the command and moved behind Arell, still glancing at the trap door and growling.

Fidget called upon her magical powers and a pink ball of force flew straight and struck the Werewolf in the chest.

Jeva feels the bite of the blades and tries to flee. Both Sara, Arell and Rolf get attacks of opportunity. If they she survives she will end up in 29-7

Nomerendal choked back a sob that threatened to break its way out from behind the lump in his throat. He'd enough exposure to lore to know that lycanthropy was a horrific affliction. He was grateful in a way for the grim determination of Abadar's follower as well as Sara's decisiveness. It had meant that Nom himself had not been forced to bend the bow, but it was still quite heart-rending. Deep in his mind, this bit of experience was being stored away in a compartment labeled Irony, for they were on something of a quest to save children... and here they were destroying one.

"We... should probably... b-burn her," the little gnome stuttered in a small voice.



"This... this isn't nearly what I thought it was going to be Arell!" Nom lamented. "We were supposed to be heroes, not butchers! What if we don't even find those other children? We'll have killed Jeva for naught!"

Tears came now, Nom could no longer hold them back.

Dorak, his head bent with regret, whispers a prayer for Jeva's soul even as he gathers firewood for a bier. At least they could make certain that the wolf would not be regenerating to come after them.

Arell took a heavy sigh,  "We will find the other children, Rendal.  And this will be just be a low point in a longer story."

He headed off to gather more firewood, "Jeva's death will not be in vain."

Turning her mount from the dead ware wolf to face the entrance to the basement. Stay sharp, I think there might be some thing down below.

The gnome wiped a hand across his eyes. "Yes, I'm sure you're right Arell..."

At Fidget's warning, Nom readied himself for whatever might burst through the opening!

Dorak stands ready at those words. "Jeva DID warn about spiders, but I'm thinking she wanted to keep whatever is below a secret. We should take the silver manacles with us. We're running into too many lycanthropes for my liking."

The little gnome rubbed a hand across his forehead and winced. "With all our messing around in town, I failed to pick up a dagger or arrowheads of silver... I'm concerned about the occurrences of this disease, it's something we may well wish to look into once this business with the children is resolved. I really don't want to see anyone else fall to this... curse."

"We cannot really afford to leave whatever's below unexplored... We may still find a clue." The thought of facing more spiders didn't really excite the poor little chap, but he had a degree of confidence in his companions in facing them.

After Jeva fell, Tanien briefly bowed his head.  "Such a shame.", he said to himself. He then sheathed his dagger and went back to retrieve his bow and arrow.

The panic in Jeva's eyes as she turned to flee was ended by a quick backhand swing from Arell. The girl fell at his feet, transforming back from rabid wolfling to a human child. Her yellow shift slashed and torn and bloody. The bracelet on her wrist spattered with her own lifes blood.

Dorak casts a Detect Magic to sweep his gaze over Jeva's body and begin looking into the basement.

Right away the bracelet glows before Doraks magically attuned gaze

Sara mourned the girl's passing with sadness. but it had to be done.

Dorak removes the bracelet as he studies it, trying to discern its properties.

Dorak can sense a faint aura of transmutation from the braclet but cannot figure out what they are.

"Dorak, I may be able to help..." Nomerendal said, "though we'll need to take a little time. Not sure if now is the moment for that, or if we should proceed to search this place out for any further sign of the children... Why don't I have a look while the rest of you do some scouting. Give a shout if you need me."

Nomerendal took the bracelet and found a place to sit where he could concentrate on examining the item.

Spellcraft: Take 20 for a total of 25

"Do we want to finish with the basement?", Tanien asked, standing next to the trap door.

Nomerendal grinned after examining it and finding a command word. her knew what it was.

Dorak moves to the opening down into the basement and takes rwo steps down. With Warhammer and shield at the ready, he peers inside with his Darkvision.

Arell follows after Dorak, sword at the ready.

There MIGHT be something down here, or their might not, better to ere on the side of paranoia.

"We definitely want to finish the basement," she replied to Taniel and followed the others down.

Fidget post up at the top of the stairs so she can keep an eye on their retreat path should they need one.

sorry had computer issues yesterday. ran out of time troubleshooting it before had to be back at work

after watching Nomerendal look over the bracelet, Dorak left to investigate the basement.

The dwarf opening the trap door he descended into the basement a few steps, looking down at the dessicated corpse of the woman  Elara, Arell, Dorak and Tanien could swear they saw her skin move.....

Dorak lights a torch, saying "vermin, most likely. Lycanthropes don't generally cause undead, but scavengers feed on corpses."

"That sounds quite reasonable, friend dwarf.  Allow  me to assist."

Tanien produced an ioun torch.  He pushed the stone gently and let it float off towards the center of the room.

Arell glares at the corpse, "I suspect these are the sort of vermin that hide in bodies, rather than under them."

Sara shuddered, remembering their trouble against the spider swarms the last time. She pulled out a flask of oil and readied it for someone, anyone to set alight if needed.

"Allow me..." Nom said, producing a flint and steel. "You throw the oil and I'll toss the torch..."

"Good idea Sara!"

As the group ignites torches and began to muse about what might be there, spiders by the hundreds began to pour from every nook and cranny...out of every oriface of the body laying there, which seemed to deflate from their leaving.

They'd seen it before, except Tanien....a swarm of spiders.

Party has initiative.

Dorak holds forth the torch to dissuade the swarm from coming closer. Meanwhile, he conjures up 4 gallons of water in the air, allowing it to come crashing down (thank you, gravity!) to smash the tiny vermin apart.

Move: Will move 10'-20' or so from the hole to allow Arell and Dorak to get out of the way.
Action: Holding the torch lighting ceremony until the allies are clear, Sara makes her toss, and the swarm is in range. We don't want to burn the entire basement right guys?

Tanien, unable to do anything to harm the swarm, backs up towards the stairs and hugs the wall to let others through if necessary.

Prodded by the others, Sara tossed her oil flask at the swarm.

Arell finds himself once again faced with a problem that swords can't handle.

The instant he figures out how to solve this problem with a sword, though...

For the moment he backs away and lets folks who can generate water and fire though.

He keeps Rolf with him, poor dog wasn't going to do any better with this than he was.

Likewise, I back out of the way so other people can attack the swarm.

Dorak conjured several gallons of water near the roof and dropped it onto the swarm smashing and dispersing hundreds of spiders.

Nomerendal, moved away from the hole, knowing the swarm was coming out and not wanting to be near there when they do.

Tanien moved next to Nomerendal for the same reason, glancing at the gnome with understanding.

Sara tossed a flask of oil, at the swarm, the glass shattering on impact, splashing oil all over the spiders. There was no source of ignition though so it did not light. (It will do 1d6 to 1 square and 1 point to each of the other 3 squares of the swarm once it is ignited though)

Fidget, astride Smoke, moves next to Her bardic cousin and looks down at him with a smile.

Arell moves back, taking Rolf with him who is barking madly.

Dorak stepped back next to Sara.

The torch didnt keep them at bay as they began to crawl all over Sara and Dorak, biting them and getting into places they were never meant to be. 06:18, Today: DM Dread rolled 4,4 using 1d6,1d6.  damage to sara and dorak. 06:20, Today: DM Dread rolled 14,16 using 1d20+5,1d20+8.  poison save DC 11. Dorak backs away,  using fire from his torch to Spark a small conflagration in the swarm.

"Who's got more oil?" Nom asked desperately. He called forth some gnomish magic and reached out his hand, the ethereal extension of which went to anyone who might hold up a flask which he would then direct and drop over the swarm...

Fidget pulls a vial of acid from her belt pouch, focusing her power through it she waits until everyone is out of the way then when the spiders boil from the basement she casts her globe of acid into it.

Arell waits for the various chemicals to do their job.  Between the fire and the acid, the swarm of spiders wouldn't be long for the world.

Ew! Ew Ew Ew Ew Ew! Why did it always have to be spiders??? She'd be bathing for weeks before she would feel like she didn't have anything crawling in her hair!

She had another flask of oil, and didn't hesitate to throw it, surprisingly not concerned about burning herself or Dorak. She aimed for the center of the swarm.

08:06, Today: DM Dread rolled 15,25 using 1d20+6,1d20+5.  Doraks and Saras save vs being nauseated DC 11.

Dorak Keeping his cool, stepped back out of the swarm of spiders, shaking them off've him. a few stragglers clung to his beard and clothing, but not enough to be a threat and he looked for a place to use a cantrip to ignite any oil. He found none so held off doing so Targets one Fine object...only area effect can be used against a swarm.

Nomerendal cuses magic that will create a hand of force that can carry things by his will intent on giving some oil to those fighting the warm of spiders.

Fidget rode Smoke so she had a line of sight to the swarm and enhancing its power with a vial of acid she had which she held up focusing on its properties, the swarm was hit by a globe of acid, damaging it further.

08:18, Today: DM Dread rolled 3 using 1d6.  fire from the oil still burning.

Arell and Rolf watched, Rolf barking crazily.

as Sarah stepped back and began to pull another flask of oil out the swarm dispersed, the remaining spiders afire still burning...

Now the basement was free to search.

and after a quick check the only things of value was the silver manacles, and on Elara's corpse a pair of well made silver daggers.

Tanien fiddled with the iron ring holding the manacles to the ceiling and had them free within a minute or two.

Tanien grets the manacles free from an iron ring mounted in the ceiling.

"Have I mentioned that I don't like spiders anymore?" Nom said with a sigh of relief after the swarm had dispersed.

The little gnome glanced sideways at Tanien, worried briefly about something he thought their new scout friend had said, but quickly shrugged it off. "Surely not..."

"Adventuring is wearisome isn't it? I mean, well, not just tiring, but... why did she have to fight us? We might have helped her?" He ran a trembling hand over his wisening face.

"I'm not sure we should believe what Jeva said or not about the children being taken to the Crucible, but at this point we really don't have anything else to go on do we?"

"It seems to be the best and only lead so far. When dawn comes, we will search for signs of Kimi and her friendsor  the kobolds.  It will help prove or disprove Jeva's story.", Tanien replied.

Dorak takes one of the silver daggers and says "aye, we wait until dawn to look for clues. If I recall aright, kobolds tend to be nocturnal, so mebbe the beasties will be stupid enough tae come back tonight, though I doubt it."

"I really don't like the idea of waiting 'til morning, just gives the little lizardmen more of a head start. I suppose you're right though. Hopefully we won't have any trouble from Creed's men if we wait."

Sara kept shaking spiders out of her hair long after all the spiders were out of her hair. She twitched and scratched anxiously.

"I for one aren't going to see much in the dark. Certainly not as much as a kobald would. I say wait for dawn then move on. I'd rather not sleep down here though. We can make camp up top."

"That sounds like a fine idea, Miss Sara. If we keep the fire low, I doubt Creed's men would find us.", Tanien replied.  He retrieved his ioun torch and went back upstairs.

The group finishes searching the ruins quickly in the waning daylight and as dusk falls they make their way up the slope they had come down back towards the trail leading into the woods they had travelled before and atop the hill they set up a camp to rest until dawn.

06:16, Today: DM Dread rolled 24 using 1d100.  20% encounter during the night.

the group rotates shifts of watch and in the morning begin to ready themselves for a trek through the woods back to the stream where they hid their raft they had made the last time they crossed this way.

Nomerendal finished his watch, somehow having ended up with his turn during the middle of the night which meant that his sleep prior had been several hours of uncomfortable tossing and turning, and his post-watch attempt getting cut short just as he was dozing off. All said, he probably slept more than he believed, and aside from the normal sleepy eyes and messy hair usually associated with camping, he didn't feel tired really... it was more a sense of emotional fatigue that didn't seem to have been remedied by the night.

"Let's get going. I have a feeling... I can't really put my finger on it, but I have a sense of urgency. It's one thing for kids to wander off, I did that a time or two myself, but now they may have been taken by..." Nom didn't care to finish the thought. His imagination, fueled by lore, song and story, often ran wild.

He shuddered and gathered up his gear, the first ready to head out.

When they finally came to their makeshift raft, Nom smiled despite his agitated mood. "Ya know, we should probably hit Creed up for a proper skiff once we get back with the rescued children... I wasn't particularly confident the first time we used this raft!" He helped, as much as his small body would allow without getting completely soaked, push the raft out onto the water and then scrambled aboard.

The second to rise fidget found Nommerendal already up, her mood was as black this morning as it had been last night. The fact that they had killed a child still set heavy on her mind, being a hero wasn't suppose to be like this. Morning cousin, I hope this day ends better then the last. I don't know if I could handle the blood of any more children on my hands.


Before any one else rises the little Gnome girl goes out into the trees to relieve herself and while in the woods makes a report to the largest oak tree she can find. Queen Syntira I hope to find and rescue the missing children today. Once I've done that. I will attempt to make contact with the local leaders of the consortium to point out possible changes to the present harvesting of trees in the area. If you can help in any way with information about the where about's of The Court of the Fell Night, I may have made friends that can aid in us bring a stop to their shenanigans.


When she's finished she brushes and saddles Smoke, then mounts up and heads out with the rest of the party. She basically try's her best to stay out of the way while the raft is being readied. Scrabbling aboard and keeping her dog calm while the others launch the raft.

Sara was up early as was her custom, but not as early as the gnomes apparently. She began packing up camp and preparing to move out.

"Agreed. Urgency, we must move quickly. And pray for no more spiders."

Arell came back from putting Rolf through his paces.

Poor dog didn't get to do much yesterday, so Arell made sure to insist that Rolf was indeed a good boy.

"Double-check the raft before we set out, Rendal." Arell says, "We built it in haste the first time, and our goal wasn't exactly longevity."

He proceeds to give it a once-over as well.

22:28, Today: Arell Kirkwood rolled 9 using 1d20+5.  Perception Raft Quality.

As the dawn broke, Tanien did what he could to help get the party ready to go.  He helped to break down the camp while others performed their morning rituals.

After setting out and reaching the river, Tanien eyed the raft warily.  He didn't care much for boats and this wasn't even half of one.

"I hope this thing is sturdier than it looks."

"It worked last time, why wouldn't it work this time? You worry too much old man." He said this with quite a bit of confidence, though that flagged a little when Tanien seemed skeptical as well.

"Might not hurt to just tighten a few knots here and there..." Nom said, shrugging. To be honest he had little knowledge about knots beyond those few he used for fishing or tying up a hammock.

The morning as they awoke saw the sun covered with heavy clouds and a light patter of rain began dampening their spirits. The made their way down the slope and trudged down the trail to the woods as they had before. They entered the forest where thay had crossed twice before not a week ago. and passed the tree the fey had been nailed to. passed the small graves dug for the sprites they had pulled from the tree. The forest thickened and soon they came to the river

08:41, Today: DM Dread rolled 68 using 1d100.  15% encounter.

It was 150' feet across at this point and the water was relatively calm. fairly shallow near the banks but the color of the water showed deeper in the middle.

The Raft was where they had left it covered with bushes. Stout as can be. Strong enough to hold a horse.. A full 15'x15' They remember building it with the others...and that made them think of the Druid and his goat, Doraks cousin, Rennick who they had heard was guarding the Lumbercamp now. Varianna who had died from choking to death from some mold they had discovered in the library of The Monastery...the place called Droskars Crucible. And the Undertaker Lorn with his horse that had been plucked from the courtyard by a huge wyvern.

They had seen the stairs down and had not had the time to investigate them....They had seen the rope and placard across the stairway announcing that the territory below was Truescales territory in Draconic...

things started falling into place as memories flooded in for Nomerendal and Arell. Fidget of course had joined them at the Crucible. But not the others.

As the others loaded up on the raft, Nom's careful facade of confidence crumbled completely. "Uh... uhmmm... uh? UH? Take it easy will you! Stop rocking the raft!"

Nom tried to push thoughts of his own name being added to the list of the fallen from their prior endeavor. He hoped desperately that the wyvern was still full!

While everyone was unloading from their raft, after yet another successful crossing, Nom chattered away in an effort to smooth over the discomfort he'd displayed during the crossing. He recalled their first outing to the Crucible, the things they'd both found and seen, as well as the horrors and losses they'd experienced.

"Let's just hope that this time goes a little better... especially for those kids, having been taken to such a scary and dangerous place!"

Sara helped unload, mumbling to herself as was her custom since encountering the extra-planar spider being. She was ready to head out in no time.

Tanien rode at the front of the raft during the crossing.  The raft seemed terribly exposed in the middle of the river so he knelt with his bow at the ready and watched for signs of danger.


OOC: I'm assuming that 6 heavily armed and armored  people with packs and dogs won't all fit on the raft and cross in a single trip.

Dorak waits patiently. He would rather float than overcrowd, fall off, and sink.

the raft floats down stream lazily, once time spinning in a slow eddy The long poles help keep the raft moving in the right direction once out of the deeper water. The forest is beautiful, but the group already knows how deadly it can be so the beauty is viewed cautiously.

Moving the raft into the brush, the group hides it best they can, they pause for lunch and then head towards the Crucible, following much the same route they took before. Its easy for Tanien to see the tracks of the entourage that had come this way. A large warband of Kobolds and 5 human children ...they are certain they are following. Its obvious Kimi is deliberately leaving signs to be followed. bent branches with a scrap of her clothing....an arrow pointing a direction dug in the mud with her initials KE and an +4 next to it.

One location had 5 sets of initials dug next to an oak in the mud KE,JK,SV,HH,MJ. Its mid afternoon and the party reaches the Crucible.

Sitting squat at the foot of an imposing mountain, a ruined monastery comes into view
between ancient gnarled trees. Made of simple stone blocks, worn smooth with the passage
of time, the stout building is falling apart. Sections of the slanted shale roof have collapsed and portions of the outer wall have crumbled. Weeds and wild thorn plants run rampant across the field leading up to the place, leaving only the slightest indication of a path that ends at the ruined front doors. Beyond, an overgrown yard sits in shadow.The half eaten badly decomposed bodies of several wolves lay near the front door a reminder of what the party faced the last time they had arrived. The remains are picked over by a few crows.

The old path that leads up to the ruins ends about 50 feet from the monastery. Before entering the yard, the path passes between a pair of old stone statues. While one of them is little more than rubble, the other is relatively intact. The 5-foot tall statue is incredibly worn but it can still be made out as a dwarf holding aloft a great stone hammer. Moss and creeper vines cover most of its surface.

The trail signs are also noted by the sharp eyed dwarf. "Looks like one of the children is keeping their wits about them."

"Sounds prudent. It might be a good idea to take a walk around the building.  Make sure that there are no straggling kobolds.", Tanien replied.

"The lore generally is of the opinion that kobolds rely on trickery and traps more than force of arms, at least from the stories I've read and heard. We'd best keep a close eye out, especially now that they have prisoners..."

"And don't forget, there's a wyvern around here somewhere. We don't want to look an easy meal!"

Nomerendal joined Tanien in searching, for though he had little to no experience with the dismantling of traps - despite his gnomish heritage - he was a perceptive one with a keen eye. Most of the time that is...

"Wyvern? Is there anything else that you've neglected to tell me?" , Tanien asked.

A quick trip around the building staying in the foliage produces no new information.

Nomerendal gulped. "Well, I suppose we go in now... and down below."

He tested his bowstring and followed Tanien as he guided the scout toward the staircase heading into the bowels of the mountain.

Dorak looks over the staircase, using his innate Knack for stonework to spot unusual protruding stones.

Tanien waited for the party to assemble near the stairs and then took point on the way down.

"Don't follow too closely, just in case.", he warned.

He took his ioun torch from his belt pouch and sent it ahead of him.  Then he started down, moving slowly and methodically, scanning the stairwell for anything unusual.

Arell followed at a respectable distance behind Tanien, Rolf right at his heels.

The new guy seemed to be working out okay, but it would take more than a few spiders before he'd be properly "seasoned"

Hope he lasted that long.

"Nothing else to be done, except go down."

She followed behind shoulder to shoulder with Arell when the passage permitted, a step behind him if it didn't.

After moving once around the building Tanien lead the group into the Courtyard. Only 50% of the group had been here before so it was new to the other 3 members of the group...and the two dogs. Who sniffed the air and growled.

Tall grasses and chunks of stone debris have all but overtaken this small yard. Off to one side, a wooden stable has collapsed into a mound of rotting timbers and moldy straw. The outer
wall on the east side has also collapsed, leaving a ragged hole. Three doors exit into this yard— a pair of double doors to the east, a single door to the north, and a lone door leading into the squat tower in the southeast corner. two wooden crosses marked the burial sites of the  body of an adventurer they had stumbled on, and Varianna. A well with brackish water was next to the far wall.

Nomerendal pointed to the door of the tower and told the others thats where they had met their first giant spider.

Then into the building through the double doors is a small dark hall. Littered with mounds of debris and piles of dead leaves. Doors to either side are shut. Ahead another pair of dounle doors are hanging askew showing Pews of darkwood lie tipped over and covered in dust on either side of this ancient shrine. At the far end sits a large ceremonial anvil, but its surface is defaced and ruined. The decomposing bodies of several large octopus-squid creatures lie across the pews with slash marks in their bodies and tentacles.

ignoring the hall to the left the group turns to the right at Arell's urgings, though Rolf is growling and sniffing all around. and around the bend in the hall that shows the other doorway straight ahead and a statue of a dwarf at the far end. The first door to the left is opened and this small study looks like it has been lived in recently. Gnawed bones litter the floor and tufts of gray fur can be seen here and there. An old stone desk sits in the center of the chamber, scratched and cracked in many places. The stench of death hangs heavy in the air.

Turning they enter a larger room with a staircase at the far side. Bolstered by a central pillar the room is still littered with debris from fallen stonework. Gaping holes in the roof allow faint light to enter this ruined chamber. One of the stone columns that once supported the ceiling is toppled, its broken pieces littering the floor. The Bodies of three wolves, one far larger than the other two lay piled against the right wall.

Rope is hung across the archway allowing access to a set of 30 feet deep stairs, the first 10 feet are only 5' wide then it opens into 10 wide stairs. Hanging from the rope is a plaque reading

Below the sounds of picks on on stone can be heard with mumbled words in a reptillian sounding language and grunts of labor.

Tanien pulled up short of the sign.  He pointed at the sign and turned back to the group.

"Says we better turn back.  This is Truescale Clan territory.", he said quietly.

"Ooooh. Guess we better turn back then!" Nom whispered with mock resignation.

Putting his hands on his hips he cocked his head to listen.

"Do you want me to entice some of them up here? Or shall we go down?"

At the ancient shrine, Dorak pauses to pray to Torag. He summons clean water to wash away the filth that stains the anvil. He makes note of the Darkwood, saying "this material goes to waste here. Light shields can be fashioned of it. So can bows."

Dorak sees the altar has been defaced and the symbols to Torag carved out and destroyed.

A slow burn passes over Dorak's features. "Little monsters revel in destruction. I will rebuild this shrine after the filth has been cleansed." Listeners cannot be certain he is speaking of the dirtiness of the temple.

"I'm sure you'll have a lot of help from the rest of us as well. But for now, the children need us more urgently."

She was ready to go down the stairs following the others when they were.

I suspect that after we recover the Kimi and the other children, Dorak's dilemma will be resolved as well.  We should be moving., Tanien said.

Tanien started down the stairs quietly and spied the room below. The stairway opens into a large rectangular chamber. The stone walls of this area are covered with intricate carvings of dwarves toiling in mines or smithies. In the center of the chamber stands the bottom half of a broken obsidian obelisk. Crude picks, hammers, and other tools lie scattered around the chamber. While 6 Kobold Guards stand guard over several Kobold Laborers chipping shards of Obsidian from the parts of the fallen monolith. 3 passageways go off in the compass directions from this chamber.

Tanien slowly backed up the stairs and turned back towards the group.  He held up six fingers and shook his rapier and then held up five fingers and made a chopping motion.

Sara shrugged at the description. They weren't going to go back, were they?

But with that many foes, even tiny ones, it'd be a good idea to be prepared not just charge in. She had nothing to immobilize or otherwise thin out a crowd. She looked at the bards and shrugged, wondering if either of them could.

But Sara could at least help her own fighting ability. And for the first time, the barbarian channeled divine power into herself to do just that.

Casts divine favor on herself, +2 to attack and damage for 1 minute.

Dorak makes a series of motions with his own hands. He points at himself and holds up a single finger. He points to fingers down to make a 'walking' motion with the fingers, then holds his palm in front and the two fingers 'trip' and fall. He points to an area visible to those inside. Then he holds up ten fingers, indicating the Kobold inside, then one finger, pointing at himself again. He motions with two fingers 'getting up' and 'backing away', then makes all ten fingers 'advance' on where the dwarf will be. He motions about his backing away until his back is against the left-hand wall, at which point the Kobold with weapons will surge forward to kill him. He then indicates the rest of the party charging from the side to overwhelm the guards. Afterwards, he shrugs. Sure, he might get battered a bit, but the Kobolds out numbering a single dwarf were far less likely to escape down a passageway to warn the rest of their tribe, not when they were throwing away a chance to outnumber and kill a racial enemy.

Nom found himself watching Dorak with his head cocked to the side. Rolf and Smoke were doing the same. He counted his own fingers and scratched his head. "I-d-o-n-t-k-n-o-w-w-h-a-t-y-o-u-s-a-i-d-b-u-t-l-e-t-s-g-o-w-i-t-h-i-t..." he mouthed silently.

The little bard found himself eager to fight. There was an ancient hatred deep inside that seemed to compel him to action. He wiggled his fingers mischievously.


OOC: When Dorak makes his move, Nom will enhance the dwarf's performance with Ghost Sound, making a sound of crashing pots and pans or cymbals and scattering loose change and maybe a someone throwing a drawer of cutlery off a balcony onto the stones below. Kind of a mixture of all that, yeah, ending with a BA-DUMP-TISHHHHH!!!

Dorak 'stumbles' in front of the opening to the cave, landing on one knee and holding his warhammer. As the kobolds look on, he stands and announces "I'm Dorak the Explorer. I'm here to rescue the children, so give yourselves up right now." Rather than his normal commanding voice, it comes out a little breathy and unsure. Taking in the numbers arrayed against him he starts backing away, holding up the hammer to ward them off. "G-g-get back!" he stutters.

Fidget stood on the stairs watching as Dorack pantomimes his plan and before she can even move the dwarf stumbles down the stairs. The little Gnome slips through the party stopping just before the entrance to the room. (moves to square 25/9) Softly mutter the spell fidget flicks a hand full of sand to the far side of the room. (cast sleep centered 22/5)

2 warriors and 2 slaves slump to the ground snoring, 1 slave, Kibbo, and Jarrdreg are uneffected.

Nom waited until the opportune moment when all the enemies' attention was on the banging and clanging dwarf. With a self-congratulatory grin plastered across his face, the little gnome lined up a shot on one of the unaffected kobolds, and let fly! As luck would have it, the grip of his new bow shifted slightly in his hand, sending his arrow skipping across the stone floor...

Arell takes advantage of Dorak's distraction and rushes into the room, slicing through the nearest Warrior Kobold with negligible effort.

"Rolf, Attack!" he calls, and the big dog that's been following him around all day finally gets his chance to shine.  He zips past Arell, toward one of the further Warriors and shakes him around like a rag doll.

The poor lizard is still alive (barely) but he looks like he wishes he wasn't.

Sara followed Arell in, flanking Dorak on the other side, then moved on the kobald that looked to be a wizard or magic user. She swung at him with her bardiche but missed badly, and remained alert for anyone else approaching her.

Sara has a reach weapon so if any of the warriors moves in to attack her they'll eat an attack of opportunity. She missed with her attack though :-(

Tanien followed the others down the stairs.  He moved around to the right and went for the shadows. (28,8)

Dorak, stumbles down the stairs accompanied by a lot of noise that made it seem far more comical than it was, and he was on one knee looking at the Kobolds stammering and stuttering.

A Kobold took a 5' step towards Dorak and stabbed out with a spear 06:32, Today: DM Dread rolled 2 using 1d20+1.  attack on Dorak vs AC 18., the spear almost bent double when striking his armor, but did not penetrate.

another kobold ran up and stabbed at the dwarf 06:35, Today: DM Dread rolled 19 using 1d20+1.  attack on dorak vs AC 18. 06:35, Today: DM Dread rolled 3 using 1d6-1.  damage to Dorak. the spear found a way through the stout defenses and Dorak grunted in pain.

1 more Kobold began to move in, while the other three watched from the left side, and that was all Fidget could take moving smoke down to pull some sand out and blow it on the direction of the group to the left. and 3 of the warriors and a slave fell to the floor asleep.

Nomerendal followed and took up a position on the stairs next to Fidget loosing an arrow at a Kobold further away. The arrow passed beyond and hit a wall snapping.

Arell came down the stairs, pointing to his right at the Kobolds standing for Rolf saying attack and slashed through the kobold in front of Dorak, and Rolf charged past to the grab the one who had stabbed at him first, causing the Kobold to squeal.

Sara moved down past Arell and swung at the Kobold who looked like a spellcaster, missing him in her hurry.

Tanien seeing the right far too congested moved in the shadows to the left, past the sleeping Kobolds.

The Kobold whod not attacked yet stepped in to stab at Rolf 07:09, Today: DM Dread rolled 21 using 1d20+1.  vs Rolf AC 15. 07:10, Today: DM Dread rolled 18 using 1d20+1.  confirm crit ac 15. 07:10, Today: DM Dread rolled 1 (2 minimum) using 2d6-2.  damage to rolf. the blow was well aimed but at the last second Rolf twisted and the spear only went along the back of his skin, leaving a bloody furrow that only angered the wardog.

The spellcaster backed up to the other side of the statue and held up his hands and saying in the common tongue Im not a threat. dont hurt me.

The Kobold who looked like a Miner backed up with him and dropped his pick chiming in Quite right Jarrdreg and I, Kibbo's the name, arent part of The Truesacales.

Nom spurted through the gaps between Arell and Sara to duck around the broken statue. There was an inner struggle between his good heart and the innate hatred he had toward these little monsters.

"Then get in the corner!" he snarled at Jarrdreg and Kibbo, gesturing to where the other kobold was cowering.

Pivoting, Nom raised his little bow and loosed a shot, nearly point blank, at one of the warriors. He laced it right in there and saw it sink to the fletchings.

Sara was reluctant to trust the kobold spellcaster, but ultimately felt she had no choice. She focused on the threats that were hostile, rather than the ones that were surrendering, though the voice in her head called her a fool for letting him deceive her.

She put the thoughts aside and slashed through the opening between Dorak and Rolf at the un-wounded kobald warrior.

Fidget ignores the combat walks up beside Tanien point her finger at the two kobold slaves. You both speak common, follow my instruction and you won't be hurt. both of you put your hands behind your head lace your fingers together and get on your knees. Then she tells the caster. I can throw globes of force, as you know they never miss. So understand if I even think you wiggle your fingers I will shoot you.


Once the two slaves are kneeling with the fingers interlaced behind their heads Fidget says to Tanien, Finish off the other two sleeping guards. I'll keep an eye on these two.

With Fidget assuming control of the slave kobolds, Tanien resumes the grim task of dispatching the sleeping guards.

Dorak swung his warhammer but missed its mark, almost dropping the weapon as he came up out of the crouch.

Nomerndal moved up and spun putting an arrow into a sleeping Kobol who promptly awoke with a start and a shriek of pain.

Sara put an end to one of the Kobold warriors quickly

Tanien pushes his rapier into an eye socket of a sleeping Kobold and ends his existence then brandishes the bloody weapon as proof they are serious to the slaves.

Arell moves up and finishes the prone kobold warrior finding it easier to hit than he thought.

Rolf tries to bite the Kobold hed bit before but this time the Kobold proved to be too nimble.

Fidget rides Smoke forward and threatens the kopbolds telling them tpo back into the corner as Nomerendal had.

Tanien glances down the hall quickly noticing a door at the far end, and a hall going further inside the ruins, before moving to the next sleeping Kobold Warrior to end his life.

Dorak misses the nimble Kobold a second time.

Fidget asks if theyve seen or know of children being brought here.

The Kobold with the pale blue scales, who had been identified as Jarrdreg, kept his hands in plain sight saying yes yes of course. 5 of them. yesterday. the raiding party brought them back.

Kibbo, the heavily laden Kobold, with all sorts of tools, answered quickly quite right. They'd been captured much as we were at a different time.

The slave cowering looked at them talking like they were strange, not understanding a word.

Sara swung again at the remaining defender and missed as well as Dorak.

Nomerendal moved around the broken statue of a dwarf and took a bead on the remaining Warrior and put an arrow through its throat.

Rolf in full attack mode didnt hesitate a second for leaping past Arell grabbing up the sleeping slave and shook him like a rag doll and threw him to the side.

Arell stopped the wardog from launching himself at the 3 in the corner.

Nomerendal strode purposely toward the dead kobolds and retrieved his arrows. He glanced over at Tanien, catching the elf's attention and held up a finger to his lips. This gesture was repeated to the rest of his companions and he held a hand to his ear for everyone to listen. Their onslaught - including Nomerendal's own embellishment of Dorak's crashing entrance - might have drawn attention from deeper in the temple.

"Shhhhhh, listen!"

When he and his companions considered the situation safe, Nom quickly tossed the bodies, no telling what interesting trinkets - or junk - these beasties might have acquired...

Nomerendal hears three different noises from different directions. He hears some growling from several feral beasts deeper into the complex facing the central hall going out and right. and out and left he hears a soft squishing sliding noise...but what startles him is a soft footfall up the stairs behind them.

OOC: Assuming Nom mentioned something to the rest of us about the footsteps!

Sara's head whirled around at the indication of footsteps behind them. she moved back to put herself between whoever was coming down and the others apart from Arell and Tanien.

Tanien listened closely for a moment then pointed to the right hallway.

"Something is coming.", he hissed.

He ran across the room and and took a position at the corner with his rapier at the ready. (29,4)

"Behind us!" Nom hissed at his companions, pointing to the stairs from which Dorak had made his almost musical entrance. He nocked another arrow and hid behind the broken statue, just peeking around enough to see who might be coming toward them.

Then, remembering their prisoners, he turned his arrow toward them and hissed, "Shhhhhh!"

Dorak moves to 8,27; out of LOS to anyone coming down the stairs. He listens intently.

Taking 10, Perception = 19.

As Nomerendal identifies three sets of noises, a slimy squishing sound coming from the left futher inside the ruins, the feral beats growling to the right further inside, and the soft footfall on the staircase going back out the party springs into action.

Sara moves to the base of the stairs and looks up...seeing nothing. she strins her perceptions, looks back at Nomerendal shakes her head and looks back up...She sees nothing on the staircase.

Tanien moves close to the entry to the right going into the next chamber telling Sara he heard the same thing. Heat and light emanates from the basin in the center of the chamber, while three holes are in the ceiling directly above the center of the chamber.

Nomerendal telling the prisoners to be quiet, takes up a position behind the legs of the broken dwarven statue his bow pointing towards the staircase sure he heard something despite Sara not seeing anything.

Dorak sidesteps and listens...he hears the feral beasts growling and snapping to the right somewhere beyond the chamber to the right. but nothing else.

Arell takes Rolf and moves to watch the hall to the left and the Prisoners While Fidget moves smoke to her right so she could peer down the hall exiting the chamber in the center.

The three kobolds just stood there in the corner watching what was going on.

Dorak casts a Create Water spell and sends it to his uttermost range, beside Rolf. He causes the water to trickle on the dirt-packed ground , forming the letters 'A','S', & 'K', in that order. He then points at the three Kobold huddling in the corner.

Nom, peeking out again, just barely, saw Dorak doing something and then heard Smoke sniff. Glancing over he thought he could make out mud forming in the dust of the floor...

"A, S, ... Is that a P or an R?" the gnome mumbled under his breath. "Asr? Asp? Is there a snake?" Unable to understand the dwarf's sloppy remote penmanship, Nomerendal decided just to ask Dorak directly by tapping his fey magical ability.

"Asp? Did you see a snake?" the gnome projected toward dorak.


Casting Message cantrip to Dorak - Dorak can make a short response mentally. Most likely it'll consist of dwarven profanity, but it was worth a try... :-P

Nomerendal just shook his head, apparently dwarven mud runes were a challenge to create with water, over distance. Or maybe they spell ASK with a P... The gnome shrugged.

"Someone on stairs, you know who?" he asked Jardregg through the use of his magic.

Jarrdreg glanced at Kibbo first before swallowing hard and answering...it was clear between the two who was the stronger personality. not sure. could be their scout. Gurtlkep i think they called him. He's more dangerous.

Fidget concentrates on the hallway where the squishy sounds are coming from, they seem to be getting closer.

Nomerendal gave a quick response to Dorak, "Could be a Scout..."

He stayed behind the broken statue. It seemed to be a waiting game at this point, though Arell, Dorak and Sara might have other ideas.

Nom shrugged his small shoulders and walked back down the stairs. Thankfully dwarven strides weren't much longer than his own, but the massive blocks of stone were nevertheless impressive.

"I dunno," he said quietly. "I was sure I thought I heard something, a footstep or ... does anyone have some string? I could set a simple alarm trap here."

Dorak waits as he casts a Create Water Orison. As the power releases, he steps in front of the stairs and releases the water (4 gallons) as a series of droplets and dew upon where his hearing is telling him that something approaches (using water to briefly outline a solid object beneath it, like a low tech Glitterdust).

As Arell begins to rush forward to strike An evil hiss rises as the creature enters the hall where all can see. A floating dwarven form shrouded in full plate rounds the corner. The air about this dwarven specter shimmers eerily, and the walls and floor sizzle and smoke where it passes. The thing’s boots scorn the earth, gliding a full foot above the masonry floor. It drags a cruel bloodletter axe in the air behind it.

Arell's blade slashed out finding it quite easy to pass through some form of translucent gel begore clanging agains the specral figure of The Glintaxe, as Kibbo and Jardregg were whispering. Rolf had backed up barking as only dogs on alert do al the creature to Arell's front. The creature tried to move forward over Arell and bumped into him causing him to back up his skin felt tingly where it had come in contact with the spectral force.

Dorak dumped water onto the stairs to his front, it showed nothing where he could see. maybe it was higher up the stairs where he couldnt manifest the deluge for lack of sufficient amount? or perhaps it wasnt on the stairs anylonger?
