Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)

Marshal:
Okay, this is my understanding thus far:

  • Lee and Cooper intend to ride out to Henry Cooper’s ranch and then to the Tunstall-McSween spread in search of potential allies. Lee specifically wants to speak with the Regulators. Bauer will ride along with them.
  • Kansas Kate means to step over to the Murphy Store in hopes of killing John Kinney or one of his partisans. Dr. Wayland is considering accompanying her as backup, and to see if he can purchase some dynamite somewhere along the way.
  • Andrew Roberts and Shabbakasha are going to ride north into the foothills in hopes of wrangling a few of Roberts’ Mescalero allies for the fight against Murphy.
  • Kearney intends to hunt down fresh mounts for any who might need them.

That’s what I know now. If you haven’t yet let me know where you’re headed, please do. If I have anything wrong, be sure to correct me.

Once I’ve confirmed everyone’s chosen destinations, I’ll put the appropriate threads together.

Jacinta would ride up along with Bryan & Albert.

I also think it's seriously a good idea to take any dynamite in the town so it's not used against us.  If I'm going to stir the pot we might as well nick the taters.

Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)

So, this past weekend, work left me especially fried and I ended up half asleep on my couch, doing some nostalgia fueled television watching via Hulu.

Which leads me to following question: Is Kansas Kate’s character inspired by that of Revy “Two Hands” in any way, shape, or form?

As to the time-shift and shopping....

I am perfectly fine with a time shift to the Duel!

If it is preferred, in terms of excitement, we can handwave the shopping. Unless it would lead to Also Interesting Things (tm).

How much time is there before the Duel?  If he has the time, and having shown his face at the bar, Wayland would likely go shopping in disguise.  But, I am also perfectly willing to not bother with the shopping in lieu of Duel.

Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)

Give or take, there’s roughly a three hour window for Wayland to go shopping. Note that Murphy’s Store is the only establishment that might be unwelcoming to the Doctor. If they’re aware that he’s keeping company with someone who’s threatening Murphy’s hirelings, they probably wouldn’t be inclined to assist him. So if he’s going there, a disguise might be prudent.

The other two mercantiles, the Tunstall Store and the Montano Store, are owned by individuals who are hostile to Murphy, and who have opposed some of the measures he’s taken to try to control the county. Renata Montano, the proprietress of the Montano Store had a lot to do with Bryan Lee coming to Lincoln, by virtue of the letters she wrote to the Territorial Governor. Of course, the concern was that Wayland was hunting for dynamite, and Murphy’s Store was likely the only place in town where it could be had. It’s entirely possible that one or both of the other stores have stashed some of the stuff for a rainy day. Wayland would need to give an honest accounting of his allegiances and intentions to find out.

If it’s done in character, I can’t promise anything enormously dramatic, unless Wayland tries to reduce the Murphy Store to splinters with his Voltaic Emitter, though there is the possibility that Wayland might make a friend or two if he shops at one of the stores that’s against Murphy.

Regardless, let me know if you’d rather do things off or on screen and I’ll set the stage accordingly. If you’d like to go the in character route, I might set up a separate thread in which to record Wayland’s shopping.

Wayland will start at the non Murphy stores.  He has no particular problems with declaring allegiances.  If that doesn't work, he'll disguise up and go to the Murphy store.

I'm good with off screen.

Tessie Ulsan:
Ulsan reaches down and scratches the top of the hound’s head.

”Almost sounds like you mean to ride over and arrest the bastard.” She shakes her head and smiles. ”That would be a thing to see.”

“If that is your intention, you need to know that Murphy had an escape route built into that place, in case the likes of you, or some of his enemies ever decided to come calling. At the northernmost wall of the cellar, there’s a door what leads to a tunnel. Takes you out to the stables behind the house.”

Absolutely. I have rarely laughed so hard as at that particular exchange. The best is that you can see the cart with Twitchy and BBW zoom by (you could also see the reverse in the prior scene you shared). Brilliant writing. Just brilliant.

lol that is the worst I've ever performed in a Deadlands duel, usually at this rank characters are dealing 20-30 damage on that first shot.

I should probably know this, but what direction is Murphy's ranch from Lincoln, and is it different than the route to Angus?

Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)

All of the large ranches are situated to the west of Lincoln, but Murphy’s, specifically, sits to the southwest. A ride to Murphy’s spread would prompt the one making the journey to veer south pretty shortly after leaving Lincoln. Whereas, those heading for Angus, or for Dowlin Mill (modern day Ruidoso) would keep to a straight westerly course for almost the entire trip.

Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)

So it looks like this is the plan we're shaping out to have:

  1. Garrett, Lee, and other recognizable PCs figuratively knock on the front door. Hey, we're here to arrest you. Come out with your hands up. Doubtful that happens, so then we engage in a full frontal assault.
  2. Once the fighting kicks off, the Regulators begin mayhem, setting the wellhouse, forcing Murphy to split his forces.
  3. Buckshot Roberts and the Apache sneak in the back way, eliminating resistance at the stable and maybe on the ground in general, then...blowing up the secret passage in the back.
  4. Everyone ultimately is attempting to converge on the House and take Murphy and his heavy hitters down.

For the full frontal assault group, I think we need Bryan and Dr. Wayland in there, because they're the most outlandish characters that made it into the stories that Kearney told Murphy about the group and their capabilities - and the most standout oddballs in Lincoln. I think if they don't go there, Murphy will smell something fishy right off the bat. That said, open to any and possibly every PC joining this group or anyone going elsewhere.

I think if we want PCs in another group, going with Roberts and the Apache makes the most sense. If someone's going via the back tunnel, we should ideally have PCs spearheading that charge. I know Jacinta expressed some interest in that and they could even rescue hostages and look for the heart that way.

We could leave the Regulators somewhat offscreen or they could join in the Apache thread after starting mayhem, and maybe join us in the House eventually.  Or perhaps the demolitions crew could help them in creating mayhem.

Anyone have any suggestions, changes, or variations? Some NPCs are looking at Lee for a plan, and I don't want to say anything without really getting everyone's input on it for what would be most fun for them.
