Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)

No machetes required. :) There is a clearly visible corridor that appears to travel through the vines. The opening is on the left side of the room. The tunnel is tall and wide enough for a single person to fit through. Any group that entered it could travel through it in single file. The thorns, while potentially a source of painful scratches, are not sufficiently potent to inflict any of the posse members with fatigue or wounds.

Yeah, I wasn't saying we need to start by hacking through anything, but if the vines start to close on us, Albert wouldn't mind having a machete in hand.

Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)sXq

Kansas Kate:
Popped up in my Youtube feed:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZhG4szpV4E

I finally had the opportunity to watch this last night. Great video. I need to take a look at more of his offerings.

It’s really remarkable how many structures in the Lincoln County area have been well preserved, like the church at San Patricio. Every time I’ve had the opportunity to visit Lincoln itself, it feels as though I’ve stepped back in time. At points as I’ve composed posts for this game, it’s been strange to realize that I’ve actually stood in some of the buildings I’m writing about, like the MontaƱo Store, the Dolan House, and the Thornton-Curry Saloon.

It’s my understanding that New Mexico recently reopened the historical sites at Lincoln. They had been closed since early 2020 due to the pandemic. I know that some of the other businesses there haven’t fared well due to COVID’s impact on tourism. As I understand it, both the Wortley Hotel and the Dolan House have closed and been put up for sale. Perhaps, as things return to normal, they’ll find new ownership and reopen.

Regardless, I do want to make my way over there again sometime in the near future. It really is a worthwhile journey.

Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)sXq

It's about a 13-hour drive for me to get there, though driving to/through New Mexico is on my list of stuff I'd like to do at some point. I hear good things. Lincoln seems like a worthy stop on that trip.

I did drive to the top of Mount Graham last year, and it felt like I could see all of New Mexico from there. But I probably couldn't actually.

In reply to Marshal (msg # 764):

He did one on Roy Bean a while back that's also interesting.

I've always imagined an interesting premise for Deadlands would be that Roy Bean is an insane but quasi-omniscient figure who can see into the Hunting Grounds and is aware of supernatural evil, and abuses his legal powers to send a posse on a series of bizarre quests like steal a blue ostrich feather which eventually converge into everything they need to fight some horror and it turns out he knew what he was doing all along.

The problem is, besides writing that so it was actually clever, no players would go along with such a premise lol

You know, if you just baked that into the starting premise, I think you could get players to go along with it.

It's totally worth it. I went to the Ruidoso area during the early pandemic to escape the Texas heat (it was about 20 degrees cooler around the Lincoln National Forest). It was about a 12 hour drive to get there from where I live as well. I didn't get to actually make it to Lincoln itself, but the area is wonderful. I imagine with the sites open and without babies it would be fun to see them esp in light of this game.

Also you will probably note as I did that the surrounding environs of this area are just as described here in this game. The trip there actually increased my already high level of engagement here - you drive around and you see the names of various figures in this game. There's a Billy the Kid highway. I drove by the spot where John Tunstall was killed. That history that is so infused into this game is everpresent in the region.

Marshal:
...its soft moan lonely.

This scene has become unexpectedly quite titillating

In all seriousness, the scene is actually quite ominous and I love it.

Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)sXq

Nice video. Opinions on Horn among historians and aficionados of the American West do seem to be rather divided on the self-described range detective. I’ll readily admit to having personally given more weight to the darker interpretations of Horn’s character, though there is clearly a lot of room for debate. Sitting on my “to read” list is Larry Ball’s book Tom Horn in Life and Legend. My impression from reviews is that the book has been extensively researched and strives to provide a balanced view of a rather complex individual.

The movie Tom Horn, in which Steve McQueen portrays the the title character, is worth watching. Good performances. The film has a haunting, almost elegiac quality to it. The filmmakers clearly favored a more benign view of Horn’s actions.

It honestly makes me happy that there are content providers on YouTube that are using the platform to discuss the history of the Old West. It’s been a source of lifelong fascination for me.

I have posted a map of the current combat situation. I wanted to include a few clarifications about it, in hopes of addressing some of the questions that might arise.

  • What you’re looking at, in essence, is a narrow view of the mountainside, that area that lies between the posse and Murphy. It is constructed this way deliberately, based on the presumption that that the group’s primary focus is on bringing Murphy down.
  • To broaden the picture: With Murphy positioned to the group’s north, the areas immediately east, west, and south of the area that is depicted on the map are occupied by significant numbers of the reanimated dead.
  • You’ll note that the only NPCs shown alongside the posse are Bauer, Garrett, and Billy the Kid. The remainder of the NPCs that are accompanying the posse will be actively working to hold off the advancing dead from the other quadrants of the map. Behind the scenes, I’ll be adjudicating the NPCs’ efforts using the Mass Battles rules, but will provide ongoing narrative feedback on how many of the NPCs have died how the NPCs are faring.
  • Please understand that the reason behind my handling the fight in this manner is twofold. First, if I had to roll individual results for every NPC and walking corpse, getting through this last chapter would be unwieldy and time consuming. Second, the narrative focus here needs to be on the posse’s confrontation with Murphy. They’ve worked hard to reach this point and that’s honestly where the spotlight should rest.

Of course, if you look things over and still have questions, please feel free to ask. Savage Worlds can be surprisingly crunchy when it comes to some aspects of combat, so know that I’ll do my best to address any questions that may arise.

Re: The Thornton-Curry Saloon (OOC Thread)sXq

Question for the Posse, knowing this could delay things, but this ones For All the Marbles so I'd feel bad not asking.

Should I play Shakin in Thar Boots right now?  I think literally everything except for maybe that one distant deader in the far left corner would lose its first turn.  It might be a very smart play because the action economy would be most affected, but I could also sleeve it and play it right when Murphy is about to do something bad.

I'm asking because I have no idea what you people are all actually capable of.  Doing it might set up a good AoE attack or something.

Just a quick reminder, since it came up. You can play your first adventure card during a chapter for free. To use additional cards, you have to burn a Fate Chip for each one you put in play.

I shoot things. With bullets. Sometimes better bullets than others. No AoE or anything like that. In general, I would think the earlier that is played the better as it will give us a full round to thin the herd a bit. But I could also see waiting a little to set up a free round when the doc and the general both have optimal ways of putting an extra action to use.

Well...  I do have some methods of AoE...  A few.

So, happy to assist with any plans to use such before everything gets all close and personal!

I laughed at that one for sure.

I've had enough good rolls in this campaign that I figure it's time that Lady Luck take her share. The house always wins, after all. Fitting that it happens to be in the fight against Murphy :D

I'm sure the next set will be a little better...or so I can hope.

After receiving some very wise counsel from a member of the posse, I’ve decided to let the protection offered by the Last Stand card remain in force through the end of the current round, as Lee’s initiative draw won’t truly come into play until the next cycle.

True. The draw taking place during my turn this round is really pro forma, a time saving mechanism that prevents us all having to wait at the end of the combat round for everyone to then take another turn drawing cards.

lol I will admit I was holding back because Double Kay goaded Murphy into this fight, I thought the posse had heard enough from me for a while.

But that's okay, I got something that's not a pages long, filthy, meandering diatribe this time.
