IE - LincolnÂ’s Main Street

Allgood and Cooper walk away from Ellis’ store, stepping out into the muddy expanse of Lincoln’s Main Street. The rainfall has lessened to a fine mist, gray fog settling over the edges of the valley, concealing the nearby mountains from view. The cool air is heavy with the scent of pine and moisture.

Cooper and the Reverend see Jake McGraw and Jacinta Castillo haul the bulky crate the engineer had brought from Roswell to the front door of his adobe walled shop. On the left, Bryan Lee ventures inside the long, weathered structure that is the Jose Montaño Store.

Moving further down the street, the pair see the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista come into view on the left, its blue painted doors standing open, dim candlelight visible within. On the right, simple clapboard structure that serves as the Assay Office, and the temporary quarters of the The Lincoln Independent can be seen.

Albert allowed the Reverend to complete whatever business he needed before taking a walk along the town with him. He started with the closest buildings and gave the Reverend the basics as they walked. "Across the street is the Patron House, and right next to it is the Montano store. They also live there. Right there where Jake and Jacinta are is McGraw's store, the Assay office right next to it."

He pointed back to the side of the street with the Montano store. "This here's Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, the Catholic church, and right next to it is the Schoolhouse. Usually are kids in there this time of day, but ya heard what Ike said."

As they continued, Albert gestured back to the other side of the street. "Over here is Wilson's saloon, and I don't recommend that one, and then that round building is the Torreon. Built for helping repel Apache raids."

Al pointed back at the other side. "That right there is the Murphy store. That whole set of buildings is owned by Murphy. I think ya heard what I said about those fellas. Of course right across the street..." his gaze and hand swept that way "....is the Tunstall store, with the McSweens livin' right next door."

He continued looking at that same side of the street. "Doc Wood lives right next to the McSweens." Al stopped walking now, and trust to eyes and gestures to direct the Reverend to the rest of it. "Further along that side is the the Wortley Hotel and the Thornton-Curry Saloon next to it. Across from the saloon you got the Courthouse and Sheriff's office, the Sanchez Saddlery, and the Ramsey Restaurant."

Albert then turned to face the building in front of which they'd stopped - the one across from the McSweens' home. "And this, Rev, is Lincoln Methodist. Unless ya got any questions 'bout the town, we can step inside an have a look?"

The church is a sturdily built, single story wooden structure with a tin roof. A steeple rises above the front entrance, its whitewashed walls a bright contrast to the gray mist that has overtaken the valley. The grounds surrounding the small building are free of weeds and litter and a pair of wooden planters have been set on either side of the steps to the front door, in which have been planted some bright red desert honeysuckle.

Two individuals, a man and woman, both clad in work clothes, are patching one of the boards on the lowest of the entrance steps. They look up from their chore when they see Allgood and Cooper stop in front of the churchhouse.

Approaching the pair of step-menders, he doffs his hat.

"Good day. I'm Reverend Earnest Allgood. I was looking for Reverend Benton. Are you members of his congregation?"

The two stand as Allgood introduces himself. The man removes his hat.

The woman speaks up. ”Good afternoon. I’m Dena Slaight. This is my husband, Jeffrey. Please don’t think him rude, Reverend. He was hurt in the war. His injury robbed him of his voice.”

Jefferey smiles and nods politely.

”We are...were members of Pastor Benton’s congregation. We’ve been watching after the church over the last little while since...”

She pauses and frowns. ”Well, you see Reverend, about a month ago, after Sunday services, Pastor Benton went home to the parsonage and...well, no one’s seen him since. Not in town. Not anywhere in the valley. At least not that we’ve heard.”

Years of not allowing himself to be caught off-guard made Albert look around at the town every now and then, but his focus was on the story from the Slaights.

Earnest reaches out to shake Mr. Slaight's hand: "No apologies are needed to excuse the results of a battle wound honorably received. You have done good work keeping up the church.

"I presume the congregation has gone out to the parsonage. What was found there? Any indication that he had packed up and moved on? Or of foul play?"

Jefferey shakes Allgood’s hand and smiles.

”Several of us did go out there, Jefferey and I among them,” Dena answers with a nod of her head. ”To be honest, it looked like Pastor Benton had just stepped out for a moment, and was going to return at any time. There was a fire in the stove and a meal on the table. The cup of coffee we found was still warm. Everything in the house looked like it was in place. Pastor Benton is very tidy.”

“Some people stayed there for awhile on the day we visited, and we’ve checked on the parsonage regularly since, but there’s been no sign of the Pastor. We reported it to Sheriff Brady, too. But he hasn’t been able to learn anything about where Pastor Benton might have gone. Mr. Ellis is still keeping Pastor Benton’s mare at his stables.”

Jefferey motions at the ground with an open palm.

”Right. The only thing that did seem out of place was Pastor Benton’s garden. He grew some vegetables and a few flowers in it and always kept it up. But the day we went to find him, we found his garden overrun with brambles.”

"Here is the letter I brought by way of introduction to Pastor Benton. I'd appreciate it if you would let the church elders or deacons know that I am available to take on Sunday services until Pastor Benton's return.

"Right now, I have to see about finding lodgings. Where would you suggest, Mr. Cooper?"

Albert thought for a few moments. "Well, if yer lookin' ta stay in town, Missus Montaño runs a nice spot at the end of the road, back where we got off the stagecoach. It's well regarded and a bit less expensive than the Wortley on the other end. Course my uncle would prolly be happy ta put up a Methodist preacher 'til ya get things in order. He'd consider it neighborly, I think. Understandin' I can't speak fer my aunt and uncle, of course, but he's a neighborly sorta fella, an my aunt is a sweetheart."

Like the rest of the town, the Assay Office is quiet when Cooper steps inside, the only noise inside the building is that of a soft series of clicks, the sound of Mike Kibbee setting type on his press, coming from an adjacent back room.

From behind a battered desk, Jorge Gomez, Lincoln’s assayer, looks up from the stack of papers he is examining and removes his spectacles. ”Mister Cooper?” he asks with a friendly tone, ”What brings you in this afternoon? You and your uncle stumble across some silver on that ranch of his?”

Gomez nods and points to the open doorway behind him. ”Sure is. Been here since early. Working like crazy. Go on back.”

Cooper enters a large room with numerous shelves that likely once served as a storage area, but now has been converted into the working office of The Lincoln Independent. A battered desk occupies one corner, a kerosene lamp on one end of its surface, piles of papers on the other. A pair of old cabinets, blackened by smoke, take up another corner, and a maps of the county and the town of Lincoln have been mounted on the wall opposite the doorway.

The center of the room is taken up by a well used printing press. Almost every surface of the machine is smeared with ink and crates of unused paper sit in front of it. Bent over the press, inserting a row of type, is a dark haired man in spectacles, the sleeves of his stained cotton shirt rolled up. He glances up as Cooper enters, the dark circles under his eyes betraying the fact that he seen little, if any, sleep in recent days.

”Albert?” Mike Kibbee says, managing a smile, ”What brings you in? You and your uncle have some stray steers to sell?”

He shakes his head. ”One thing is certain. This morning, when I managed to get myself here, Manuel Segovia, one of Jesse Evans’ boys was waiting on me. "Those that are here in town will either be Murphy's residence, The House, or at Wilson's Saloon. But Albert, I'd recommend great caution should you choose to pay a visit to either place. It would be akin to stepping into the lions' den."

He takes a seat on a pair of stacked crates, pausing to gather his thoughts. "As for what the children saw, there are a few common elements..."

I know that Renata Montaño has been especially diligent in her correspondence, but thus far, we haven’t received any kind of answer. Alexander McSween, an attorney here in town, is traveling to Santa Fe in hopes of speaking with the Governor directly.”

He frowns. ”Judge Wilson, our Justice of the Peace, took it upon himself to deputize some cowhands, men that were in the employ of John Tunstall, a rancher who was recently murdered. Many suspect that Lawrence Murphy ordered the killing. Wilson charged them with tracking down a group of individuals suspected of being involved in that shooting but...I fear those men may simply take Wilson’s charge as express permission for them to exact revenge as they see fit.”

“The way I’ve heard it told, Miss Perez was gathering the children for their afternoon lessons. I probably don’t have to tell you what a chore that can be. There’s a lot of other things most young ones would rather be doing than schoolwork. She had rung the bell and was in the process of catching a few of the stragglers, but many of the students had already started to go inside.”

He looks down at the floor. ”Supposedly, when the children entered the school, they saw that these...vines had grown all over the far end of the classroom. All over the back wall and around Miss Perez’ desk. They were thick, dense, and not like any plant that the children were familiar with. The stems were covered with thorns. Obviously, such a strange sight frightened them, but before they could make an escape, the front door of the schoolhouse slammed shut. I’m not sure if any of the children saw who closed it.”

“Just after that, something came out of the vines. A figure. Lyle Baxter, who seemed to have the calmest head on his shoulders said it was tall, with arms and legs that were unnaturally long. Regardless, all the children tried to flee. Lyle and Ella Gehrig got out of a window. A couple of others made it out of another. But most...including Michael Junior, were trapped inside.”

“Miss Perez heard the commotion and was trying to get through the front door. Finally, she was able to force it open, but by then, all that was in the schoolhouse was the vines. The children had vanished.”

Albert squinted and looked in the general direction of the church for a moment, then back at Kibbee. "Is there anything else you seen or heard that might be helpful?"

”I know that several of the families involved have spoken with Desiree Thornton at the Thornton-Curry Saloon,” Kibbee replies, ”It’s likely that she knows of the most recent happenings surrounding the disappearances. Miss Thornton is a singularly courageous young woman. Seemingly unafraid to speak out against Murphy and The House. She’s offered help and support to many of those whose children are missing, including my wife and me.”

“I think that many were hoping that Mr. Tunstall’s cowboys might be the ones to finally stand up to The House. While those men certainly aren’t fearful of opposing Murphy, I fear their priority is bloodshed. Avenging Mr. Tunstall’s murder. Not bringing order to Lincoln.”

Rev. Earnest Allgood:
"That is indeed prodigious," says Earnest, "Has anybody gone into the schoolhouse since? Are the vines still there?

"I take it nothing about the figure seemed familiar to young Lyle or to Miss Ella. It would be interesting to ask them to further describe the strange figure, perhaps even to draw it."

”Lyle Baxter attempted to sneak back inside, but was intercepted by Father Narvaez, as I understand it. Since then, several townspeople have volunteered to keep an eye on the place to ensure that no one else loiters the property, at least for the time being. But yes, the vines are still present. I have it on good authority that they’ve actually grown outside of the school, overtaking much of the back wall.”

“Lyle probably wouldn’t hesitate to speak about what he saw, through I’m sure his parents would want to be present when he did. His father, Reed, insisted on keeping him at home from school today, primarily because of him trying to enter the schoolhouse again.”

Re: IE - LincolnÂ’s Main Street

Albert nodded at all Mike had to say, then moved toward the man to give him a friendly pat on the back. "We'll get yer boy back, Mike. Hang in there, okay? I'll go talk ta Desiree and then see what sorta plan we can hatch."

He waved at Earnest as the reverend left. "See ya 'round town, Rev. Lemme know if ya need somethin'"

With a thoughtful look on his face, Albert looked back at Mike and gave him a nod before taking his leave.

OOC: Albert would like to walk behind the school to see if the vines are truly growing there, then he'll head to the saloon to catch up with Desiree.

Re: IE - LincolnÂ’s Main Street

”Thank you, Albert. Truly,” Kibbee says, his voice thick with emotion. ”Anything you require from me, just ask. Most hours of the day, I’ll be right here.”

Outside the mist has grown heavier, bringing an early dusk to the late afternoon and keeping the Capitans concealed behind a watery, gray curtain. Drops of rain have begun to mingle with the light drizzle as Cooper ventures down the street toward the schoolhouse.

As the whitewashed structure comes into view, Cooper sees two figures standing in front of it, conversing. One, he quickly recognizes as the scout he shared the stagecoach trip with, Jacinta Castillo. She is speaking with another woman who is dressed for the range. Her boots and chaps show signs of persistent use. Her hat is pulled down against the elements, but it only conceals a portion of her freckle sprinkled face and long, red hair. A gun belt encircles her waist, a Colt Peacemaker secured in the holster. She is holding a saddle propped on one shoulder which appears brand new.

OOC: I’m going to move you over to Castillo’s thread so you can join the conversation there.
