VA - The Regulators

The sky is a bright expanse of azure, interrupted only by a few feathery wisps of clouds, as the riders draw near to Blazer’s Mill. The mountain air has stilled, allowing the autumn morning to grow uncharacteristically warm, as though the territory has briefly forgotten the season.

After a little more than an hour, the  horses come around a bend in the trail, providing the riders with their first glimpse of the small community. It is a cluster of buildings stretched out on a hillside, and the group are immediately able to note that a sawmill and a gristmill are among the modest collection of structures. Beside the sawmill, a boarded up property with a handful of crates on the porch bears the painted words ”Assay Office”, suggesting that Blazer’s Mill once hosted a failed mine.

The streets, notably, appear empty.

The unbroken forest to the left of the trail provides some shade and cover for those that wish to remain unseen. Drawing closer to the settlement, the posse members can hear a handful of shouted words, though none can recognize their meaning. Studying the area, the group members are able to see that a few of the Regulators, Billy, Doc Scurlock, and Charlie Bowdre, are gathered on the porch of a one story building directly across from the sawmill, an establishment which appears to be a restaurant of some kind, or possibly a saloon. All three men’s attention is focused on the sawmill.

After a moment, there is another shout, originating from within the mill, which the riders are now close enough to hear. ”I’m not lettin’ you take me in for a killin’ I didn’t have no hand in!” the deep voice calls. ”You bastards want to come in here and try to drag me out, you’re more than welcome to try!”

Time Travel!  Since we have an hour before that happens and I want to see what the Tracking roll gets us before reacting!

On the way, Kansas Kate caught up to the good (?) doctor's steed on her own borrowed mount.

"Ya got a way ta make it look like ah'm someones else?"  She asked, remembering their earlier talk.  She wasn't sure if he meant he could do it in general, or if he had it in his pocket ready to go.  If the former, well the bandanna would do for now.

Dr. Wayland had been popping another jelly bean into his mouth when Kate offered her question.  In his surprise or excitement, he momentarily choked.  A hack and an uncomfortable looking swallow later, he was finally able to answer, "Indeed!  When we return Ah'd be happy to start the process.  Theah ah meashaments which must be taken, you see.  My facial simulacra are no mere masks, but perfect copies and must be fitted carefully for the illusion to work."  He paused to pop another jelly bean into his mouth, offering the small brown paper penny candy bag out to Kate if she'd like, "If you are amenable, Ah could use those meashaments to make a copy of your own visage for the collection.  With suitable financial recompense, of coahse."

Jacinta frowned at the tracks and nodded to Bauer.  She gestured with five fingers, made a so-so motion with her hand, and then jutted her fingers behind her head like a headdress.  She pulled her rifle from the scabbard on her horse and jerked the lever to chamber a round, resting the gun on her knee as she turned her mount and approached the others.

Speaking quietly, she reported, "You see 'em up ahead no problem, but there's a group of natives here, as well.  Four or maybe five of 'em.  Got here first.  They could've moved on, but if they're here, they're likely here for a reason.  Anybody heard if this Buckshot fella got friends in any of the nations?  They might be allies."

Dr. Wayland popped another jelly bean into his mouth, eyeing Kate a little more closely for a second.  Then he turned back to keeping his eye on the path ahead, "No no.  Only direct meashaments will do.  Highly complex process, you see.  Besides which, Ah have found many wanted postahs to be inaccurate to the point of uselessness."  He did offer the jelly beans out again...just in case.  Second chances are important.

At the Mill, Dr. Wayland had become much more attentive and had put his candies away.  Work to be done.  At Castillo's question, Wayland offered, "Ah have heahd Mistah Robahts has many friends within the Mescalero Apache."

On the porch where the three Regulators have gathered, Billy and his companions talk together quietly. The Kid scowls and shakes his head. Drawing one of his revolvers from its holster, he opens the weapon and empties it of bullets, replacing them one at a time with rounds taken from the loops on his gunbelt.

"If it can be helped, I'd prefer a peaceable resolution to the matter. I'm not sure that I'd call the Regulators allies as such, but they're certainly another check on Murphy's power - and I don't want to have to contend with opposition from both the House and the Regulators on an ongoing basis," he said in an answer to Wayland's question.

He addressed Castillo next and the others as well next while he dismounted and hitched his horse to a tree, marking the spot mentally.

"SeƱorita if you, and anyone else, could draw a bead on one of those fellas up ahead, it would offer me sufficient security should they not take kindly to a parlay and try to turn me into chop suey - I'd be much obliged. I'm gonna go up there and try and talk to 'em. If things seem peaceable of course, feel free to join me."

Kansas Kate just grimaced.  She didn't like any of this, but she wasn't going to just complain without offering some kind of idea, solution or insight, none of which she had.  Until she realized the gesture that had been made.  That wasn't a casual tick or a precaution, that was an invitation.

She gently tapped the Ranger's shoulder.

"A thousand pardons ranger, but if'n yer gon' keep sech rotten comp'ny as yers truly, ya mights avail yerself of it.  What feller just reloaded his six gun?  Did ya see his hands?"  Kansas Kate indicated.  "That's a killer Ranger.  Not that you can't handle a killer, but there might be a play ta make here if he's itchy."

If there was a look begging for an explanation she'd continue.  "Ah reckon ya might be able ta talk them others down, but ah think that one, he's spoiling fer a challenge."

He paused to answer Kate.

"I've seen that the gentleman is quite proficient with firearms, but we had a civil exchange at the Courthouse a couple nights back and I don't see that things would come immediately to blows. And I'd rather have him still being a pain in Murphy's ass while I'm bringin' down the House, so to speak - so I aim to keep it that way. Of course, should it go south, I'd much appreciate the application of your set of skills."

He advanced on foot toward the position taken by the Regulators on the saloon's porch. He wasn't trying to take anyone by surprise. "Mr. Bonney, Mr. Scurlock, I don't suppose this would be a good time to pick up our discussion from the courthouse?"

Just before the bone creature had attacked them, Scurlock had vouched to Bonney for Lee's participation in covering up the ruse around O'Folliard's faked death. Their conversation had been civil, even as they were on opposing sides as Lee attempted to protect Brady from them. For a second time in so many days, Lee was attempting to prevent them from taking their intended quarry.

With a silent nod to the Ranger, Jacinta turned her horse along the treeline, staying in the shadowed brush.  Her keen eye darted about in search of trouble as she moved, not wishing to happen upon an ambush or war party.  Finding a reasonably good spot with a view of both the regulators and the sawmill, she put her rifle to her shoulder, selecting her target.  If they didn't take too kindly to Bryan's interference, she might not be able to save the Chinaman, but she sure as hell could plug one or two of them in revenge.

The hushed conversation between the three men halts as Lee and those that have chosen to accompany him approach. The Kid grins as he continues to methodically load his weapon. “Well, Ranger, I have to say, you’ve got a habit of turning up in the most unexpected places.” He chuckles softly. “Truth be told, this might not be the best time to discuss all the happenings in Lincoln. But after we get finished with our business here, you and I can spend all afternoon talkin’ county politics, if that’s to your liking.”

He snaps the revolver closed, then draws the second pistol from his belt, unloading and reloading it in the same manner. ”Still, your showin’ up here might prove handy.” He nods in the direction of the sawmill. ”We’re here to serve one of Judge Wilson’s warrants. Fella by the name of Roberts. As you might have heard, he doesn’t sound too inclined to cooperate. Which is just as well. But if you’d like to lend a hand and help us dig him out of there, I’d sure be grateful.”

"Before you serve this warrant, I've got a request. I'm in town investigating criminal activities, many of which seem to be tied to the House's activities in the region, including Mr. Tunstall's murder, which I understand you have a deep personal interest in," he said.

"In the course of these activities, I assembled a posse that was responsible for freeing the kidnapped children of Lincoln from the farm where they'd been stashed. We were also responsible for dispatching Jim McDaniels from this world just yesterday. Before that last one, however, Dolan and McDaniels came to see me in town and attempted to point my efforts in the direction of your group, and in the same meeting attempted to place blame for a crime I believe had been perpetrated by Nicholas Provencio instead on Buckshot Roberts. I don't know the basis of the warrant you have, but if Dolan was trying to point my gun at Roberts, I'd reconsider whether he really is someone you should be pursuing."

"I'd like to ask you politely as one reasonable man to another to pause in serving this warrant, and instead move onto one of your other targets. I believe Roberts has information crucial to my investigation, and if he should perish in a firefight with one of your capable members, that will be a major setback in my attempts in uncovering what's going on with the House. We share a mutual interest in bringing that organization's activities to a halt. If in the course of my investigation I uncover wrongdoing by Roberts in this regard, I give you my word that I'll prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law."

Persuasion: 5 (7 if he respects the Texas Rangers, unlikely but possible for an outlaw, but I figure you can still respect the reputation of even an adversary despite differing opinions or points of view)

For his part, Albert looked at the Regulators that were present to see if he recognized any of them.

OOC: Does he?

As the others all seemed to be inspecting their weapons, Albert did the same. Chambers seemed full of bullets, though, so that was good. He hadn't had time to make any more special ones. Something he'd have to rectify when given the chance.

I've told you about what we've accomplished so far, so you should know we've struck bigger blows at the House in a few days than anyone else has in a long time. Bonney is silent for a time, weighing the Ranger’s words. Finally, he looks up at the sawmill. ”Don’t you ever fucking suggest I’m on Murphy’s side again,” he tells the lawman.

Steeping off the porch, he gives out a shrill wolf whistle. From their hiding spot, Castillo and Bauer see the two of the Regulators behind the Assay Office stand. The third, a clean shaven man in black duster remains crouched. He looks up at Chavez y Chavez and his red haired companion and motions them forward. Stillness overtakes Blazer’s Mill in the wake of Bonney’s words, the only noise the sound of the creek turning the mill’s wheel.

After a moment, the front door to the sawmill opens and three figures emerge. Two are clad in buckskin, a young man and a young woman, both armed with bows, long knives held in sheaths on their belts. Their dark hair, chiseled features, and the beadwork on some of their possessions denote them as Apaches. Bows in hand, they regard those gathered across the street with stern eyes.

A man emerges behind them, his face bearded, his dark hair long. He is dressed in a cotton shirt the color of trail dust and faded jeans. Several amulets hang around his neck, bearing turquoise, obsidian, and other stones. He is holding a Winchester rifle in his gloved hands and a pair of tomahawks are secured on the right side of his belt. Beneath his right eye is a long scar, likely inflicted by a blade.

He looks at Bonney. ”I didn’t have any hand in John Tunstall’s murder, Billy. He was a decent man.”

He looks to the group on the porch. ”Which one of you’s the Ranger? I want to see a star.”

Albert was glad to see things appeared to be moving forward peaceably, but he certainly didn't relax. Meetings like this had a tendency to go sideways. Even more dangerous was that Albert and those with which he was allied didn't particularly want to injure or kill any of the Regulators. At least not yet. If they ended up fighting with one hand tied behind their backs, as it were, well, that was dangerous.

Albert did nod and touch the brim of his hat as the pair of Regulators that included Chavez y Chavez emerged from their hiding spot.

Dr. Wayland gave a surprised and curious, "Hmmph..."  It was a pleased sort of surprise.  Wayland isn't /unhappy/, of course.  He might not have been unhappy if gunfire had broken out either.  The bounty hunter eyed the gathering players, especially those with weapons free.  As a quiet aside to any of the others hanging back, Wayland said, "Now Ah am really beginning to understand the whole "One Riot, One Rangah" idiom...."

Lee gave Bonney a quiet nod of thanks, also showing that he agreed with his request to not suggest he was on Murphy's side. He looked over at the sawmill expectantly, waiting to see what would come to pass and whether Roberts would emerge.

"Thanks. You won't regret it."

When Roberts finally emerged and asked to see proof of a Ranger, Lee stepped aside.

"That'd be me, Mr. Roberts." He showed his palms to be empty, and pointed to his star, tilting it so that it caught the light.

Roberts takes a couple of steps forward, the movement making it apparent that his left shoulder sits noticeably lower than his right. He studies Lee’s badge intently.  Shaking his head, he says, ”If you’re askin’ about what I know of Murphy, you’ve already found out enough to get yourself in plenty of trouble.”

He looks northward, in the direction of the mountains. ”I’ve been tryin’ for a while to get people to listen. Instead, I’ve just convinced ‘em I’m crazy. All but Renata Montano. I’ve wanted to go back up there. To Capitan Pass. To put a stop to it. Maybe earn a little redemption. But I try to do it alone, she’ll tear me to pieces. Just like she did with those Murphy brought.”

He returns his attention to Lee. ”If you ain’t tryin’ to fool me, if you really want to know what Murphy is, how he got that way, I’ll tell you. But once you know...The House...they ain’t never gonna stop huntin’ you.”

Kansas Kate broke her silence.  Though Roberts was still of the highest interest to her, McCarty suddenly held her full focus.

Her nostrils flared.  She smelled treachery.  Or at least trouble.

"Ranger.  Not one more word sir.  Not until he answers me.  Where betwixt th' devil 'n th' deep blue sea is Tom O'Folliard?"

She stared at him, a thousand yard stare.  The stare of a dead woman.

Because either somebody was hiding something, or somebody was a dumbass, or hey, why not both?

She didn't like it.  It wasn't consistent with what O'Folliard had said, at all, but she had no evidence of what she suspected.

But if she was right, wouldn't they just deny having seen him at all?  It'd be easier.

At Kate's outburst, Dr. Wayland gave her a curious look....then turned that same curious look on the answerers.  He muttered quietly to himself, "...sensible Billy...  sense into... in two?"  Whatever his thought, he didn't seem to be more concerned....or less concerned.  At Lee's signal, he did slide his pistol back away to its hidden holster.  He now drew out a small package and unwrapped a thin, flat, black stick of something.  He pushed it into his mouth and began to chew as he rode up to join the gathering at the mill.  The package of Black Jack chewing gum was offered to Cooper and Kate, noting, "Ah find it is quite good for the nehves."

From his spot behind the abandoned Assay Office, the black clad Regulator turns his head, briefly fixing his gaze on Castillo and Bauer in their hiding spot. Giving the pair a slow nod, he returns his attention to the discussions in front of the sawmill.

A hint of movement draws Castillo’s attention northward, to the narrow road that brought her and the others to Blazer’s Mill. There, she spies a fading haze of trail dust, marking the very recent passage, perhaps only minutes ago, of horses, animals she cannot readily spot. Left of the pathway, near a thick collection of spruce and a wide boulder, she catches the wink of something metallic, briefly reflecting the glare of the sun.

Giving up her position, Jacinta moved into the open to get a better look.  Setting her fingers to her lips, she whistled shrilly to get Bryan's attention and gestured toward the trail.  Her rifle was already at her shoulder as she began to advance to investigate, trying to keep to the treeline in case whoever was spying started shooting.

In January of 1880, Matthew Ruskin, a down on his luck prospector, stumbled across a small vein of sliver while digging up in the foothills near Blazer's Mill. Convinced that there was more of the precious metal to be found, Ruskin used his money to invest in the equipment to build a proper mine, and set up an assay office in the town, intending to establish himself as the authority for any mineral finds in the area. By the time he was finished, Ruskin was broke, but had all he needed to chase any fortune to be discovered in the area.

He never found another hint of silver. Neither did any prospector that came to Blazer's Mill.

When a representative from the National Bank of Santa Fe, the institution that had helped finance some of Ruskin's venture, came to take payment on what they were owed a year later, Ruskin fled town, and was last seen riding west at a fast clip. The bank officer posted a notice on the assay office, making it clear that all of the equipment and property within belonged to the firm, to be removed and sold at a later date in an effort to collect on an unpaid loan.

So it was that all the remains of Matthew Ruskin's failed venture sat gathering dust in an empty building at the edge of town. Including a fair amount of the dynamite he had purchased for blasting in the nearby foothills.

An instant after the window of the Assay Office breaks, a detonation rocks the building, blowing most of the western wall out, along with a portion of the roof. Splintered lumber and pieces of debris sail into the air.

Next door, the shock of the blast sends the bodies of the two fallen Apache warriors tumbling down the street like discarded toys. A groan sounds from the sawmill itself and the creek fed wheel leans outward, its hold on the building suddenly tenuous, still turning in a sporadic jolts as the water finds it.

Among the wreckage thrown into the sky by the explosion is a thick canvas sack, which is hurled into the trees close to where Castillo and Bauer had concealed themselves. When it strikes the earth, there is a second blast, which reduces one of the pines to splinters and tosses another uprooted one out onto the trail. A dark cloud of earth hides the rest of the treeline from view.

Albert swore, mostly under his breath, as all hell broke loose. He did have the good sense to place a hand on his hat when the dynamite went up. Wouldn't want to have to try to find that thing later. Nor did he want any more dust on it than already was on it.

With a heavy sigh, he decided he'd go ahead and do something stupid, even though every gunfighting instinct told him to get behind a barrel, windowsill, or door. Instead of doing that, which is what he really ought to have done, he instead moved between the charging Robertslion and the deadliest gunfighter in town. "Knock it off, Roberts! That shot didn't come from Bonney. It came from over yonder." Albert pointed in the direction it seemed to have originated.

Albert looked over at Billy the Kid. "Find cover, Billy. Fightin' Roberts means you lose either way."

Kansas Kate whooped in the explosion.  She only wish she'd set it off herself.

Those sons of bitches shot an arrow at her.  She was pissed.

She had no idea where they were out there, but it wasn't going to be for lack of trying.  She started to haul ass.  "Glad you gals could kiss 'n make up.  Now come on ya'll.  They might still be out there.  Let's find that sunuvabitch!"

Jacinta was well aware of the chaos around her, of explosions behind, shooting, and yelling.  She was aware, but her singular focus was on the copse where she'd shot the unwelcome sniper, hat gone and braids flying, running as fast as her half-breed legs could carry her.  Being closer than the rest, and knowing exactly what she was looking for, she reached the trees alongside the trail first.

22:54, Today: Frank Baker rolled 1,5 using 1d6,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,5.  Spirit.

Castillo and Lee both see hints of movement behind the cover where the rifleman has taken his position. A moment passes, then three sharp wolf whistles sound from the spot, each one shrill and brief.

OOC: At the moment, the only two characters that have sighted the rifleman's position are Castillo and Lee. Based on Castillo's prior callout, any of the remaining members of the posse that want to spot him can do so with a successful Notice roll.

If anyone wants to try to take a shot at the sniper, be aware that he is currently at long range for the purposes of rifles and carbines and he's concealed behind medium cover, which would add an additional -2 modifier.

Jacinta, your movement toward the rifleman's position will cut the range between you to medium. However, be aware that cover becomes sparse beyond the border of Blazer's Mill.

If anyone that's in the vicinity of the restaurant porch isn't rushing to locate the rifleman, please give me a separate Notice roll.

Dr. Wayland was forced to grab for his own hat and turn away from the blast.  He was suddenly quite thankful for his penchant for wearing protective glasses.  As his duster was blown back, he leaned into the pressure wave and drew the gatling pistol.  He thumbed the catch to release the spring; arming the mechanism.  Armed was good, cover might be a handy thing as well.  The mill belonged to a cougar-man and his Apache friends; who might not really care who's "side" another armed white man was on.  The restaurant belonged to the Regulators; whom Wayland had no particular trust in at the moment either.  The assay office seemed....well...unstable.  So, Wayland made for the wall of the blacksmith shop; to put /something/ between him and who-knew-what-else from at least one direction.  At Castillo's warning, he cast about for the "more" she referred to, yelling back, "Define them!?"

Move towards Blacksmith's Shop.  Draw Gatling.

At the sound of Castillo’s shot, Bowdre turns and heads for the noise, pistol in hand.

An instant after the scout shouts her warning, a group of riders enter the street from its northern end. Cooper and Dr. Wayland catch sight of them as they round the corner, as do Bonney and Scurlock. Most are dressed in the attire of ranch hands. All are brandishing firearms. Near the rear of the gathering, two of their number stand out: a slender man dressed in black and gray and a clean shaven man clad in a fine navy suit. The riders are roughly sixty yards away from the restaurant and sawmill.

Billy the Kid cracks a smile. ”Evans and Dolan,” he says, looking over at Scurlock, ”Hell, Doc, this might not be such a bad day after all.”

OOC: As I understand it:

Castillo is on the trail that leads into Blazer’s Mill, facing down the sniper. Kansas Kate and Charlie Bowdre have made their way to the trail to investigate the gunfire.

Dr. Wayland is in front of the blacksmith shop. Cooper, Bonney, Scurlock, Roberts, and Chavez y Chavez are in the vicinity of the restaurant.

I’m not certain where Lee went, but he can update me.

Rudabaugh is beside the sawmill. The surviving Apache warriors are inside the sawmill.

Tamsin River is inside the restaurant, if she’s joining in.

The riders that just arrived are north of the restaurant and sawmill. They’re roughly at medium range for purposes of most firearms.

Lena Bauer’s status is unknown.

If I have anyone in the wrong place, please correct me.

Everyone please give me a fresh initiative draw.

Forgive the rough appearance of this. I'm trying to learn my way around a new application, in the hope that I don't always produce maps that look pathetic.

Jacinta, the spot you've halted at places you at medium range from the rifleman. The cover he's behind at this juncture would potentially function as armor, but it only provides two points of protection and since your rifle is AP 2, it's negated. It won't impose any kind of penalty to your roll to hit him, unless he ducks down behind it again, in which case he's foregoing his opportunity to attack.

If you choose to move away from your current position, cover is scarce. It's limited to a couple of small clumps of spruce that could potentially provide some minor concealment, but not any shielding from an incoming shot. If you run, you could reach one of the clumps of spruce in a single round and bring yourself into short range with the sniper.

Dr. Wayland eyed the approaching storm of horsemen and decided that these folk were likely "fair game."  Especially as they had that look of rowdy, indiscriminate, general violent intent.  Best to fight such indiscriminate fire with more indiscriminate fire.  He took a firm shooting stance and swung the big gatling pistol up with both hands.  The clockworks clicked and the thing began bucking noisily and spitting out a hail of bullets into the mass of charging horsemen....

Evans gives a hard tug on his horse’s reins, steering the mount toward the nearby general store. Sliding from the saddle with practiced grace, the outlaw leader kicks the door of the store open and proceeds inside, revolver in hand.

VA - The Regulators

12:14, Today: Frank Baker rolled 5,1 using 1d6,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,1.  Spirit.

Baker loses his shaken condition.

His nerve apparently rattled, Baker breaks from cover, moving at a quick pace diagonally across the trail, clearly seeking the shelter of the town.

12:20, Today: Frank Baker rolled 5 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5.  Running.

12:24, Today: Frank Baker rolled 3,0 using 1d10-5,1d6-5, rerolling max with rolls of 8,5.  Shooting.

He fires at Castillo as he moves, but the shot is wild, the bullet whining past well left of the scout.

13:01, Today: Marshal rolled 5,4,7,11 using 1d6,1d6,1d6,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,4,(6+1)7,(6+5)11.  Spirit - Evans Gang.

3:02, Today: Marshal rolled 11,2,1,9,1 using 1d6,1d6,1d6,1d6,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+5)11,2,1,(6+3)9,1.  Spirit - Horses.

All of the riders are able to lose their shaken condition, as do two of the horses. The three horses that remain shaken can’t be prompted to move in the direction their owners desire.

The rider that had been bucked from the saddle struggles to his feet, trying vainly to climb back onto his horse, the frightened animal resisting his efforts.

Gunfire erupts in Blazer’s Mill as the rest of Evans’ followers begin shooting at the restaurant, the multiple reports overwhelming all other sounds on the street.

13:05, Today: Marshal rolled 9,2,2,0,3,0,2 using 1d6-2,1d6-2,1d6-2,1d6-2,1d6-2,1d6-2,1d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of (6+5)11,4,4,2,5,2,4.  Shooting - Evans Gang.

13:07, Today: Marshal rolled 7,2 using 2d6+1,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,2,2.  Damage -Evans Gang.

Bullets hammer the facade of the restaurant. Both front windows shatter and a staccato drumbeat sounds as several shots slam into the wooden walls. One finds its mark, sending Charlie Bowdre tumbling backward, blood welling onto his denim shirt from his wounded shoulder.

Bowdre is shaken with one wound.

Five of the riders turn their mounts about as they fire, quickly moving around the house that sits nearby, opposite the general store, seeking the safety of cover.

The riders who have moved are now in medium cover.

A heartbeat later, Rudabaugh’s warning comes to pass and what remains of the assay office is blasted into ruin.

15:20, Today: Marshal rolled 17 using 4d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,3,2,(6+5)11.  Damage.

The detonation blows the lone Apache warrior standing in front of the sawmill back into the structure through the exterior wall. Pieces of flaming debris are hurled through the street.

Inside the gristmill, Bobby Joe Porter and Cletus George are huddled in a corner, a cloud of flour filling the large room like fog, both workers having scrambled for shelter when the first shots were fired outside.

“Why should we make a run for it?” Cletus asks, ”Why cain’t we just stay in here? Hell, nobody’ll prolly see us through all the flour.”

”Yer a damn fool!” Bobby Joe tells him, ”If one of them bullets flew in here...”

Before he can finish speaking, a piece of burning lumber crashes though the eastern window.

The gristmill explodes with terrific force, the structure almost entirely flattened.

16:12, Today: Marshal rolled 25 using 4d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,(6+3)9,4,(6+2)8.  Damage.

Two of Evans’ riders that are still in the street are killed by the blast. One is sent hurdling over the roof of the general store, while the other, the outlaw who had been thrown from his horse, is propelled down the street like a cannonball, flying through the window of the restaurant and skidding across the floor on his face.

A wave of force slams Dr. Wayland and the two Regulators who are with him, as a crate that is engulfed in flame sails over their heads and through the open door of the blacksmith’s shop.

Dr. Wayland, I’ll need you to give me an Agility roll to stay on your feet.

Buffeted by the twin explosions, the sawmill ends up leaning precariously to the right, its timbers groaning with strain. The already loose water wheel gives up the ghost and breaks away from the building, rolling drunkenly across the street before crashing into the restaurant, demolishing much of the covered porch before coming to rest against the front door.

Dr. Wayland observed the results of his burst of fire with bland satisfaction.  Not as glorious as unleashed lightning, but efficient.  He was beginning to aim as Chavez ran over.  He answered without looking, a bit busy, "Apprecia-...."  Whatever he was going to say is torn apart by the rest of the gunfire and the following explosions.  The Doctor ducked to the side, barely, as the flaming crate hurtled past.  Though sadly, he lost his hat.  The expensive top hat being lost in the blasting chaos.

OOC: The mounted gunman that River just shot is the only member of Evans’ gang that isn’t in any cover. He’s out in the middle of the street, exposed.

The five other gunmen have taken cover around the corner at the end of the street, opposite the general store. They are looking around the corner, trying to draw a bed on any of their enemies that have sought shelter in the restaurant. They are effectively in medium cover.

Cooper also has enough of a vantage point to have seen Evans make a dash for the general store and Dolan circling around the store to the alleyway.

Kate, since you’re running, please give me a roll (1d6) for the extra distance.

He regards the lawman with disdainful frown. ”Because I rode here with a group of people intent on bringing a renegade bounty hunter to justice? One who had a hand in the murder of an innocent rancher? Or because I hoped to see a group of out of control killers receive the same manner of mercy they’ve shown their prey? Ruffians who hide behind the law as a pretext for murder. I assure you, sir, I have the best interests of this county at heart. Ridding Lincoln of the likes of Bonney and his partisans, and Roberts and the mountain raiders he aligns himself with, will save lives. It will keep innocents from harm.”

“I’m surprised you wouldn’t agree. I thought bringing violent men to justice was your stock and trade. Or am I mistaken? Did you ride here with the intention of delivering Andrew Roberts to the Lincoln County Jail?”

“You know, Ranger, doing away with the last of these miscreants will allow my employer to bring great change to this valley. Mr. Murphy has ventured where few men are courageous enough to go. In the Capitan Mountains there is ancient wealth to be found. Wealth and power. Of the sort that would rival the discovery of ghost rock, Mr. Lee. Those that follow Mr. Murphy will reap great rewards for their loyalty. Those that don’t will soon understand just how misguided their efforts to oppose him have been.”

A man on horse very seldomly expected this attack, and it was one that the Ranger had used on many an outlaw in his short time as a lawman. Knowing that Dolan had the reputation of a pugilist, however, he knew that this wasn't going to be the walloping that he was accustomed to doling out, so he knew he had to act fast to prevent Dolan from getting the upper hand. Still, he counted on the fact that Dolan might have become accustomed to having people like Jesse Evans doing his dirty work or even creatures like Jim McDaniels.

Crouching into the form he had invented, Driving In Rail Spikes, he leaned over Dolan and delivered two solid punches, before dancing back a few steps to give himself space to try to avoid Dolan pulling him down.

OOC:

You're absolutely right - the intention was to make him prone.

He's gonna use his next action to do the good ol' one-two punch Wild Attack. As a prone defender, Dolan's Parry is reduced by 2 and he must subtract 2 from his Fighting rolls. Getting up costs him 2" of movement.

Since Dolan is a Martial Artist, Lee doesn't get the usual +2 Unarmed Defender bonus, doh! That still leaves him with his Inspiration bonus, as well as what he'll get from a Wild Attack - and he has Damage Field up, which was cast with a raise.

Fighting: 13
Fighting (Wing Chun): 9

Damage: 26 (28 if with a 13 hits with a raise)
Damage (Wing Chun): 18 (22 if a 9 hits with a raise)

Lee's effective Parry is now 5.

Dr. Wayland stumbled a bit and sprinted for the doors of the blacksmith shop, hoping that it wasn't so smashed or on fire from the explosions and debris.  Cover suddenly seemed very important.  As he went, he deftly unlocked and pulled the near empty cylinder from his auto-pistol and replaced it with another.  A locked in with a click and he thumbed the catch on the spring mechanism.  He didn't bother shouting any suggestions or demands.  Or maybe he did.  His ears were ringing so badly right now he honestly couldn't be sure.

Taking cover, if not too dangerous, in the doors of the blacksmith shop.  Also, reloading.  If the shop is no longer appropriate or safe cover, I will re-write.

Inside, a wiry, but clearly strong, man with dark, receding hair, is staring wide eyed at the smoldering crate that has landed in his shop. Looking at the three that have sought protection within it, he asks, ”What in tarnation’s goin’ on out there? War start back up or somethin’?”

Jacinta was surprised at Bauer's appearance, having assumed she'd perished in the big explosion.  With a tip of her head at the woman's order, she took aim at the scrambling sniper.  Her rifle cracked and she loosed another shot.

The crack of Castillo’s rifle is sharp, piercing the air. The scout’s aim is true, the bullet finding the rifleman’s abdomen. The pain of the wound staggers him, his balance wavering. Halting his flight, he drops his rifle, shakily raising his hands above his head. ”Stop! STOP! No more shooting! I surrender!” As if to emphasize his point, he kicks the rifle away from him.

As Baker was already shaken, Castillo’s shot inflicts two wounds, leaving the rifleman with a total of three, and a few inches from death.

The gunmen gathered behind the house open fire, sending bullets sailing down the street and through the open windows of the restaurant.

08:28, Today: Marshal rolled 15,5,7,0,3 using 1d6-2,1d6-2,1d6-2,1d6-2,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+6+5)17,(6+1)7,(6+3)9,2,3.  Shooting - Evans Gang.

One of the shots hits Bowdre in the chest. The Regulator staggers away from the window, knocking a chair askew as he drops to a seated position in front of a nearby table. ”Damn it,” he mutters, clutching the wound.

08:39, Today: Marshal rolled 8,5 using 2d6+1,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,2,5.  Damage - Evans Gang.

The shot leaves Bowdre shaken with three wounds.

Another bullet finds Scurlock’s flank as he dashes across the street with his compatriots. The slender ranch hand takes a few unsteady steps, grimacing in pain, but manages to keep to his feet.

08:41, Today: Marshal rolled 16 using 2d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of (6+4)10,5.  Damage - Evans Gang.

Scurlock is shaken with two wounds.

Another shot slices through the interior of the restaurant, creasing Cooper’s shoulder before biting into the wall beside the back door.

08:42, Today: Marshal rolled 9 using 2d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 5,3.  Damage - Evans Gang .

Albert, that attack would leave you shaken.

One of the bullets kicks up dust at William Bonney’s feet, prompting a laugh from the gunfighter. The last of the shots slams into a post, showering Kansas Kate with splinters as she races toward the general store.

OOC: Dolan loses his action as the result of Lee’s adventure card. So he remains on the ground, trying to fend off blows as the Ranger strives to beat the shit out of him.

Evans remains out of sight inside the general store.

”Cover me,” Bauer requests of Castillo as she stands. She approaches the rifleman scowling, her carbine in her hands.

His hands still raised, Baker says, ”I swear, I ain’t gonna give you no...”

Before he can finish, Bauer swings the butt of her carbine at the side of his head, smashing his temple.

10:55, Today: Lena Bauer rolled 5,4 using 1d8-1,1d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 6,5.  Fighting.

09:43, Today: Lena Bauer rolled 7,3 using 1d6,1d4, rerolling max with rolls of (6+1)7,3.  Damage.

The shootist drops to the ground like a sack of stones.

”Nope, you sure won’t,” the deputy tells him.

OOC: Bauer’s intent was non-lethal, so Baker is incapacitated, but breathing.

Kate kicks in the door of the building, almost knocking it off its hinges as she forces her way inside.

The interior of the store is small, but the walls are lined with shelves which are stocked with a variety of goods. A few open crates are stacked in the center of the room, each one filled with different varities of fresh produce.

Behind the counter, a middle aged man and woman are cowering, fear etched on their features. Jesse Evans stands to the left of the counter. He has restrained a boy, perhaps sixteen years of age, and holds a Bowie knife to his throat. He grins as Kansas Kate storms inside.

"Callin' me out?" he says, "Hell, Kate, here I thought you were a real outlaw. If you were itchin' to kill me, I figured you'd do me the service of bushwhackin' me good and proper. Save me the trouble of seein' it comin'."

He presses the steel to the boy's throat. "I ain't much for fair fights. Never have been. And I'm not too inclined to follow your lawman friend to the county jail. I thought you, of all folks. would understand that."

Re: VA - The Regulators

He wiped the blood off of his face from Dolan's blow in a brief respite. "Ain't you heard, Dolan? Rangers...we got ways of makin' you talk." He gave Dolan what he hoped was a menacing grin and then spun into furious series of punches. The arts he had studied in the Chinese community in Shan Fan had been elegant and delicate even as they were capable of being lethally effective.

This was nothing of that. There was nothing elegant or delicate about the fight he brought to Dolan, and from Dolan's counterattack he knew that the rumors of Dolan's skill as a fighter were true. He might hide behind paid killers, but that didn't mean he couldn't do some damage if he was pressed to it. He knew that he wouldn't last long if Dolan had another opportunity to lay into him, so he gave it everything he had.

OOC:

Spent a Red to make a Soak roll (so no Marshal draw) and two Blue to boost it to 12, which should soak all three wounds and remove the Shaken condition as well.

Since Dolan's last post made no move of getting up from his prone position, he should still be at a -2 Parry, putting Lee's flurry of attacks (Quickness is still up) at two successes, one with a raise.

  • His first successful attack (no raise) deals 29 damage (Shaken with 5 Wounds)
  • His second successful attack with the raise deals 21 damage (Shaken with 3 Wounds)
  • His third successful attack (no raise) deals 16 damage (Shaken with 2 Wounds)

This is his last round of Quickness and Damage Field. Starting next round he will have to pay to keep it up.

Cooper sights one of Evans’ riders circulating at the back of the group and fires. His aim is deadly. Sheathed in blue energy, the bullet strikes the outlaw just above his sternum, reducing his upper chest to a bloody ruin. Freed from his body, his head rolls out into the dust of Blazer’s Mill’s Main Street. Two of the surviving outlaws shout out curses, their voices tremulous with fear.

Before the group can react further, Dr. Wayland’s gatling pistol roars to life. A hail of bullets slam into the house the outlaws are using for cover, blasting holes in the walls and blowing out windows. One round tears the upper hinge of the front door free, causing the portal to sag outward. From inside the structure, a male voice yells excitedly in Spanish. The outlaws instinctively press themselves against the western wall, desperate to avoid Wayland’s fire.

Re: VA - The Regulators

OOC: Jacinta, from where you are, you essentially have three options:
  • You could move to the corner of the restaurant, which would provide you with a clear view of the street. From there, you could engage the group of outlaws taking cover at the house. There would be no range penalty on the shot, but the riders do benefit from  medium cover, which imposes a -2 modifier on the roll.
  • You could also move to the ruins of the assay office, which would provide you with a similar vantage point. However, the ruins would only give you light cover, while the restaurant’s exterior would provide medium cover.
  • You could also move to the alleyway, if you wanted to intervene in Lee’s battle with Dolan. At the moment, the Ranger has Murphy’s helper grounded.
  • In fairness, if you do take up one of the positions looking down Main Street, you could also target Jesse Evans. I’m not sure that Kansas Kate would necessarily appreciate your assistance at this juncture.

Going to any of the spots I’ve identified would require a standard move action, so you would be able to make an attack in the same round.

With Baker out of commission, Jacinta moved further into town, taking cover at the corner of the restaurant.  Assuming from Wayland's rapid fire that part of the gang was hiding inside the house across the way, she searched for a target and loosed a hurried shot that plunked harmlessly into the wooden structure.

Roberts crouches, watching the members of Evans’ gang seek shelter from the hail of gunfire directed at them. Suddenly, the mountain lion springs to life, charging across the street during a lull in the shooting, and launching himself at the first of the cowering outlaws.

16:57, Today: Andrew Roberts rolled 7,5 using 1d8+4,1d6+4, rerolling max with rolls of 3,1.  Fighting - Pounce.

16:58, Today: Andrew Roberts rolled 7,4 using 1d12+4,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,4.  Damage.

The outlaw Roberts attacks is killed.

Flames suddenly become visible in the windows of the lower level of the sawmill, plumes of smoke escaping from the windows. The Apache warriors dash across the street. They take shelter behind the water wheel and notch fresh arrows on their bows.

Okay, KK has 2 Grit for Seasoned, +1 for Harrowed, so 3

20:07, Today: Kansas Kate drew the 3 cards: 5D, 10D, QH using the Deadlands system.

Whoops forgot to make that roll secret for maximum tension.  No matter.

Kansas Kate now holds:

4 of spades
5 of diamonds
7 of spades
10 of diamonds
jack of Spades
queen of hearts

Face up cards are the Black Joker, 6 of diamonds, 5 of spades

Let's see, the 4 of spades, 5 of spades, 7 of spades, Jack of Spades, and play the Joker as a wild card for the Ace of Spades (the Ace of Spaaaades!), that's five spades and therefore a Flush.  That's pretty good, I'll take it.

If anyone can make a better hand out of that I'm all ears, but I don't see a Royal Flush, Straight Flush, 4 of a Kind or a Full House here.

There comes a time for all slow men to die.

For who shall judge the quick and the dead?

Kansas Kate, having the Quick Draw Edge, shoots for Speed.  I will hold off on the roll until we see what hand Evans has.

09:24, Fri 27 Sept: Secret Roll: Jesse Evans drew the 2 cards: 5C, 2C using a deck of 54 cards.  Hole Cards.

17:17, Mon 30 Sept: Secret Roll: Jesse Evans drew the single card: 7S using a deck of 54 cards.

With the face up cards, (Black Joker, 6 of Diamonds, 5 of Spades), the best hand that Evans can produce (using the Joker) is Two Pair: Two Sevens, Two Fives.

That will put Kate three ranks above Evans, so she will add +3d6 to her damage roll.

As he’s unnerved, Evans will shoot for accuracy.

Blast away, Kate!

For a moment, everything was still.

There weren't a lot of times in Kansas Kate's life, if her current existence could also be considered life, when she felt serene.  They were precious to her.

This was such a moment.  For a split second, the world was colorful again.  She could feel her blood quickening, although it no longer did.  For that moment, there was nothing else but her and the knowledge one of them was about to eat a bullet.  Or perhaps both, Kansas Kate herself had taken a slug and managed to fire back and win.  They could kill each other, or theoretically the bullets could collide mid-air.

Anything could happen.  That's why it was exhilarating.

The crisp mechanical click was as clear to her ear as the hammer fell as it would have been as if she'd heard it the day she were born.  The Schofield, the vessel of her power, barked its thunder and threw her lightning at him.

09:29, Today: Jesse Evans rolled 6,5 using 1d10,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 6,5.  Blue Chip - Soak Roll.

That lone success will soak one of the wounds. Nowhere close to what’s needed to keep him upright. That also happens to be the last chip in my hand.

Evans’ gun has just cleared leather when Kate’s shot finds the center of his chest. He takes a staggering step backwards, his face registering confusion as blood begins to darken his shirt. He attempts to raise his weapon, but finds he lacks the strength, coughing violently as he collides with a pole that supports the porch’s overhang. He slides down into a sitting position, giving out a strangled wheeze as the last of his life abandons him, leaving the outlaw leader staring blankly at the woman who bested him.

Re: VA - The Regulators

"Or maybe, Dolan, you've deluded yourself into thinking that you don't," he said between breaths as he recovered from the staggering blow he took from Dolan and the effort it had taken fighting the man as he tried to knock him away.

He didn't have the effort to do much more than hurl everything he had left in the tank at Dolan, raining down a series of blows upon the man in the hope of shutting him up for a few hours.

OOC:

Note that the intention isn't to kill Dolan, but to clobber him senseless so that he can be taken prisoner.

Spending a White Chip to soak and a Red to boost that Vigor Roll (gives the Marshal a chip draw) to soak 2 of the 3 wounds. Spirit roll succeeds getting rid of the Shaken condition. Lee is left with 1 Wound.

Opposed Strength roll to avoid knockback succeeds.

Going to spend 4 PP to keep Quickness and Damage Field up. Looks like Dolan's Parry holds pat at 7.

As such, Lee's attacks should be one raise and two ordinary successes (12, 8, 7) with corresponding damage of 28, 28, 21. That is:
  • Shaken with 5 Wounds
  • Shaken with 5 wounds
  • Shaken with 3 Wounds

When that deed was done, he slung Dolan's body over his shoulders and headed out to meet the others. He assumed the lack of continued gunfire meant that Cooper, Castillo, Wayland, Bonney, Bauer, Roberts, the Regulators, and Kansas Kate had gunned down everyone else that the explosion didn't do for. He hoped his own people had survived that explosion, come to think of it.

Kate steps back inside the general store, finding the family that runs the mercantile all gathered behind the counter, watching the entrance fearfully for any further danger. Kate learns that the store doesn’t have any saws in stock, but can offer her a pair of unused axes.

Dr. Wayland makes a careful scan of the street, but he sees nothing that signals any further threat. Across the street, a slender, gray haired man with a thick mustache emerges from the heavily damaged home. He steps cautiously out into the street, then turns to examine the residence, at which point he begins to shake his head and mutter in Spanish.

Bauer smiles and nods. ”My arm got pretty torn up, but I’ve had worse. Bein’ so close to that blast left me addled for a bit. Couldn’t get my bearings. My ears are still ringin’.”

She glances back at Baker with a raised eyebrow and grins. ”Him? He’s gonna be asleep for awhile yet. Promise. I might need a hand gettin’ him up on my horse, though.”

“You sure gave that bastard a run for his money. There’s plenty of people back in Lincoln who are afraid of Frank Baker when he has a rifle in his hands,”
she says admiringly.

At Tamsin's command, the scout ventured further into town to find any of the other wounded that might need to be delivered into the herbalist's clutches.

Re: VA - The Regulators

Marshal:
Kate steps back inside the general store, finding the family that runs the mercantile all gathered behind the counter, watching the entrance fearfully for any further danger. Once they understand that the peril has passed, the father and mother offer anything within the store to Kate that she wants in gratitude for her saving their son. Kate learns that the store doesn’t have any saws in stock, but can offer her a pair of unused axes.

Kansas Kate read the room, figuratively speaking.

"Ah don't need ta keep th' axe, jus' borry it.  But if'n ya wants ta do me a favor, send them two-"  She directed her remark to his (presumed) wife and son.  "-out and about fer an hour or so.  But you, ah need ta borry.  Also, let's borry that there soap box."

Assuming compliance, Bloody Kansas Kate set to her grisly, but necessary, work.  These horrible men who abused children needed to not just be defeated, but utterly demoralized.  The clean death by one well placed shot was something Graham may have deserved, but not this piece of excrement.  The soap box would make an executioner's block.

Evans was not going to his grave in one piece.  Given Kansas Kate was not practiced at this, it was going to be a bit messy.

She did feel a little bad about making the husband clean this mess up, but, looking on the bright side, it would give him something grisly to protect his family from.  Such was the questionable logic of Kansas Kate.

Dr. Wayland looked a bit more grim at the complete sight of the destroyed buildings, shaking his head softly.  His hands continued their methodical reloading efforts and he muttered quiet questions to himself.  Then seemed to answer them.  He didn't seem to like his own answers.  As he did this, he made his way closer to the others, most specifically Ranger Lee and Roberts, "Pehaps, you two should have that talk now?  Befoah anything else explodes or any more of these fellas come riding in again."  Wayland's eye slid down to the the unconscious Dolan and then over to the surrendered gunmen, "I think theah's enough of us to keep an eye on these....gentlemen..."  His pistol was drawn again, in a particularly attention getting fashion for Dolan's men to get a good look at, and he changed the cylinder quickly.  Clicking it into place with purpose and meaning.

"It is a damn shame at that, Mr. Roberts," he said, regaining some of his composure having caught his breath and gotten a chance to rest a spell.

"Seems like we did, Mr. Bonney. I hope yours did the same," he said, looking around. He knew it was likely some of their number might have been wounded or perished in the conflict, but Roberts had information that he needed and that was his priority.

"And I think Dr. Wayland here makes quite a good point. Best we have that little chat before anyone else has a chance to light us up again. I think we're safe for a bit here to talk."

He idly opened the envelope that he had found on Dolan, looking to inspect its contents while waiting on the others to speak.

Bauer whistles, summoning her mount, The horse comes galloping to the edge of the town in a matter of minutes. Taking her rope from the saddle, she proceeds to restrain Baker and then heave him up onto the mare. Shifting her shoulder back and forth from the lingering discomfort, she checks her work, then leads the horse toward the restaurant,

Castillo’s search turns up several people hiding in their homes north of the Main Street, but none that have been harmed by stray bullets or debris from the explosions. Many are grateful to the scout for her assurances that the hostilities have ceased.

The smith emerges from his shop and approaches Dr. Wayland. He is carrying the bounty hunter’s top hat, which he offers to him. Looking over the destruction, the smith asks, ”You wouldn’t happen to know of any good builders around these parts, would you?”

10:31, Today: Marshal, on behalf of Jacinta Castillo, rolled 3,5 using 1d8+2,1d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 1,3.  Notice.

Looking in the direction of the trail the posse followed to reach Blazer’s Mill, Castillo sees a hint of dust rising on the horizon, the tell tale sign of approaching riders. They are still a good distance away, but the amount of dirt being displaced by their horses tells the scout that they are traveling fast.

The letter that Lee confiscated from Dolan is unsigned, but written in a neat hand that speaks of a formal education. It reads:

”It is imperative that the bounty hunter not be allowed to speak with the Texas Ranger, or his allies. For that matter, he cannot be given the chance to blurt our what he knows to Bonney and his miscreants. If the Regulators hesitate to kill Roberts, or are unsuccessful in doing away with him, you and Evans must see to it.

“If appearances become a concern, effect an arrest and bring him to Lincoln. Raines and Contreras stand ready to handle things. They can make it look like an escape.”

“The problem of Roberts has been left to linger for far too long. In the wrong hands, the knowledge he possesses could upend all of the work we have done in the valley. He must be dealt with. Do not fail.”

Wayland listened quietly as the plans were negotiated.  Having offered his piece, he felt it was really mostly up to the Ranger anyhow.  That shiny badge does lend a good bit of weight to many things.  He did take a moment to pull a small brass case from within his jacket.  The case snapped open and he withdrew a card.  The card was offered to the blacksmith, "Do send any inquiries about restoration assistance to me and Ah will do what Ah can."  The case was deftly put away again and this time his hand returned from his coat with a handful of small candies.  These were eaten, one by one, as he turned to regard the approaching dust and listen to the proceedings.

"I don't know who wrote this - maybe Murphy himself. Above, the storm clouds that had swirled above Blazer’s Mill slowly disperse, scattering to reveal a muted blue sky. Once all that are with Lee are readied, Roberts leads the way northward, cutting across the open country in the direction of the looming gray peaks of the Capitan Mountains. The pace is quick, with only the sounds of hoof beats and the mournful wind accompanying the riders on their journey.
