Re: VA - The Regulators

Dr. Wayland accepted the found hat, his grim expression quickly giving way to happy, gratefulness.  He brushed idly at the singed spots on the hat, deciding just how bad it might be.  Which is of course nothing compared to the destruction of the town.  But it is /his/ hat.  To the blacksmith, "Sadly, most of the folk Ah know aroun' these pahts are standing right heah.  Ah am unsure of their carpentry skills."  He paused a moment, settling the hat back on his head, with the appropriately comfortable and stylish tilt, "Now, Ah myself might be of some assistance..."  Roberts comment regarding meeting again and others coming stole his attention away.  Wayland glanced to Lee, then back to Roberts, "Ah would hate to think we went through all this just to postpone a meeting....  Pehaps a few of us could accompany Mr. Robehts?  See to his safety in these dangerous times so that he is shua to make the meeting?"

Re: VA - The Regulators

Bryan took a look at the necklace, and then put it on. "What do you mean it'll show me where to find you? Who's headed over here?"

For some reason, he found himself trusting Roberts, but he didn't trust to the fact that no one would try to harm the man. And he hadn't received any assurances that the Regulators considered their beef with him over.

He looked over to Bonney to see what he made of all this.

”My guess, Ranger, that thing’s got some kind of Apache magic put on it,” Bonney says. He shrugs. ”Ain’t too hard for me to believe, since we just saw old Buckshot turn into a cougar a little bit ago.”

He glances over his shoulder at the destroyed town, then back at Lee. ”I’m takin’ you at your word, lawman. You haven’t lied to any of us yet, so if you say Buckshot knows somethin’ that could help bring down Murphy, I’m willin’ to believe you.”

“You and your people want to ride on out with Buckshot, we Regulators can stay behind and handle whoever’s headed this way.”

”It’s the Lincoln County law. That’s who’s coming. Led by their new Sheriff,” Roberts says.

”I don’t know if their new leader is friend or enemy, but I know that some of his deputies...they ain’t like you, Ranger.” He nods at Bauer. ”Or her. Their loyalty rests with Lawrence Murphy.”

“If you want to ride with us now, you’re welcome. If not, the spirit of the hawk that sleeps within that carving, it will bring you and your friends to my hideout in the foothills. It knows the way very well.”

Re: VA - The Regulators

"If this ain't a symbol o' good faith, I don't know what is," he said, gesturing to the beaten, handcuffed form of Dolan next to him.

"Mr. Bonney, I respect the Regulators enough to think that y'all could probably hold your own against the lawmen, but I'd rather these prisoners we've captured were secured and out of sight. I'd rather not let the lawmen get their hands on any of 'em, especially Dolan. Could I ask that rather than making a stand here, you get 'em back to Mrs. McSween's ranch, where you can secure them in a more defensible location? And make sure they're still alive when I get back there? He said he knows somethin' about Tom O'Folliard's location, and I think I can get it out of him if he's still breathin'."

"If y'all can do that, then maybe I and anyone that wants to come with can ride out with Roberts, make sure we get the story that can help pull this whole thing together. And as a bonus, you don't have to go back empty handed. Not the prize you were hopin' for, but a trophy nonetheless."

After offering her assurances to the locals, Jacinta returned to the others to give her report to Tamsin.  Anyone injured and wanting healing was within her reach.  She stood on the porch, leaning against one of the posts, and begin adding ammunition to her rifle to replace what she'd spent.  Her gaze turned to the trail, searching for the first signs of the approaching lawmen that she'd heard Roberts mention.

05:28, Today: Tamsin River rolled 13,4 using 1d8-1,1d6, rerolling max (((8+6)14,4)).
So this roll will heal two wounds, and I’ll spend a fate chip for Greater Healing for the last one.

Tamsin lets Bowdre get up and speak to Henry before she really gets into her work. “Don’t worry, Mr. - sorry, what was your name?” she asks Henry. “I will make sure y’all are good for the ride back.”

It’s best that he’s standing at any rate. ”All right, off with the shirt,” Tamsin commands before he can go any father.

”It’s Bowdre, ma’am,” the young man tells the herbalist as he obediently removes his shirt.

A short time later, his wounds patched and the bleeding halted, Bowdre looks at River in amazement. ”I’m much obliged, ma’am. Folks back in Lincoln say that you and Miz Winter can work magic with those plants of yours. I reckon they ain’t wrong.”

Bonney listens to the Ranger’s request, then nods. ”I imagine Mrs. McSween would let us keep him in one of the line shacks up north. We’ll keep him under guard. He’s a rattlesnake. A real damn dangerous one.”

Bonney looks to his fellow Regulators. ”Let’s get mounted up. Jose, let’s put Dolan on your horse. I’ll ride behind you.”

“We’re gonna need to ride careful. Stick to the back trails. Any of Murphy’s people figure out we’ve got him, we’ll be in for hell. We’ll start out south. Circle through the basin then cut back north to Lincoln. Let’s get going.”

Scroggins and Chavez y Chavez load the still unconscious Dolan onto the latter’s horse. Bowdre mounts his horse, waving to River in thanks. Urging their mounts to a gallop, the Regulators ride out of Blazer’s Mill, headed for the desert country.

Re: VA - The Regulators

10:31, Today: Marshal, on behalf of Jacinta Castillo, rolled 3,5 using 1d8+2,1d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 1,3.  Notice.

Looking in the direction of the trail the posse followed to reach Blazer’s Mill, Castillo sees a hint of dust rising on the horizon, the tell tale sign of approaching riders. They are still a good distance away, but the amount of dirt being displaced by their horses tells the scout that they are traveling fast.

The letter that Lee confiscated from Dolan is unsigned, but written in a neat hand that speaks of a formal education. It reads:

”It is imperative that the bounty hunter not be allowed to speak with the Texas Ranger, or his allies. For that matter, he cannot be given the chance to blurt our what he knows to Bonney and his miscreants. If the Regulators hesitate to kill Roberts, or are unsuccessful in doing away with him, you and Evans must see to it.

“If appearances become a concern, effect an arrest and bring him to Lincoln. Raines and Contreras stand ready to handle things. They can make it look like an escape.”

“The problem of Roberts has been left to linger for far too long. In the wrong hands, the knowledge he possesses could upend all of the work we have done in the valley. He must be dealt with. Do not fail.”

Re: VA - The Regulators

Wayland listened quietly as the plans were negotiated.  Having offered his piece, he felt it was really mostly up to the Ranger anyhow.  That shiny badge does lend a good bit of weight to many things.  He did take a moment to pull a small brass case from within his jacket.  The case snapped open and he withdrew a card.  The card was offered to the blacksmith, "Do send any inquiries about restoration assistance to me and Ah will do what Ah can."  The case was deftly put away again and this time his hand returned from his coat with a handful of small candies.  These were eaten, one by one, as he turned to regard the approaching dust and listen to the proceedings.

Re: VA - The Regulators

"I'm in your debt on that account, Mr. Bonney. Before you leave, I found this on Dolan's person." He showed the letter he had retrieved, and to anyone else who would want to see it.

"I don't know who wrote this - maybe Murphy himself. But it's clear that the House doesn't want us to know what Mr. Roberts knows, and that they hoped the Regulators would do their dirty work for them. I'm glad to see that this we were able to prevent that. Thank you for keeping a cool head, Mr. Bonney. I don't wanna hold y'all up. I'll come by the ranch later."

After the Regulators left, he looked at Roberts and then the others.

"Well, I'm headed off with Mr. Roberts, and I hope some of the rest of you are as well. I won't force anyone to it, but I think we'd be better off together - I can provide you some legal cover and we've proven a few times over that we're a rather effective team. Besides, his hideout could give us a chance to regroup and recuperate."

Re: VA - The Regulators

Kansas Kate wondered both what was up with the queer fish antics of Cooper, and why they weren't just shooting Dolan, but leaving him alive did allow for certain tactical options.  And she could just kill him later.

Besides, she'd gotten her bloodlust slaked for the moment.

She didn't respond verbally, but her eyes and their thousand yard stare were fixed on Roberts.

She... had to know.  She had to know.  Even though it didn't matter any more.

"We rode out here to hear Mr. Roberts out, didn't we? I just figure we might wanna see this through, and that even if folks had changed their mind after the shootout, that dealing with the Lincoln law after this whole situation here might not be the best option. That said, if you're keen to being deputized, Coop, I can make that happen."

"Oh, as far as all that goes...By my authority as a Texas Ranger, I hereby pronounce y'all deputized in the matter of helping me escort this witness through hostile territory. You may now kiss the bride," he said.

"Now, let's get our horses and get outta here before we wind up in our second shootout. I know I could use a breather." With that, he headed over to where they had their horses, hoping that at least a few would follow.

"Who's kissin' what bride?" Jacinta asked with a sideways grin.  "I'm comin' along, too.  If we're goin', we better get.  They're ridin' hard on the trail and makin' good time.  Be here shortly.  We best be gone before then, else we're gonna be delayed even more."

Like Bauer, she whistled shrilly in the direction of the forest and was rewarded by an echoing whinny from her horse.  Breathing a sigh of relief that her mare hadn't gotten caught in the blast, she greeted the mustang with the enthusiasm one might reserve for an old friend.  After ensuring the horse had no wounds, she mounted up, resting her rifle on her thigh as she waited for the others.

Re: VA - The Regulators

Oddly enough, this was actually not the first time Kansas Kate had been deputized, though it was the first time a Texas Ranger officiated.  In certain territories, lawmen with more cleverness than ethics were keen on using wandering gunslingers to clean up local trash.  The trash either being criminals they couldn't bother to deal with themselves, or people who had funny ideas like "competence" and "due process" and "rule of law".

"Yeah, ah need to fetch what horse ah borried from that smart Injun feller."  It was probably important she get that particular horse.

Re: VA - The Regulators

Roberts and his Apache companions wait for those accompanying Lee to gather their horses and belongings. Above, the storm clouds that had swirled above Blazer’s Mill slowly disperse, scattering to reveal a muted blue sky. Once all that are with Lee are readied, Roberts leads the way northward, cutting across the open country in the direction of the looming gray peaks of the Capitan Mountains. The pace is quick, with only the sounds of hoof beats and the mournful wind accompanying the riders on their journey.
