Lee gave Bonney a quiet nod of thanks, also showing that he agreed with his request to not suggest he was on Murphy's side. He looked over at the sawmill expectantly, waiting to see what would come to pass and whether Roberts would emerge.

"Thanks. You won't regret it."

When Roberts finally emerged and asked to see proof of a Ranger, Lee stepped aside.

"That'd be me, Mr. Roberts." He showed his palms to be empty, and pointed to his star, tilting it so that it caught the light.

Roberts takes a couple of steps forward, the movement making it apparent that his left shoulder sits noticeably lower than his right. He studies Lee’s badge intently.  Shaking his head, he says, ”If you’re askin’ about what I know of Murphy, you’ve already found out enough to get yourself in plenty of trouble.”

He looks northward, in the direction of the mountains. ”I’ve been tryin’ for a while to get people to listen. Instead, I’ve just convinced ‘em I’m crazy. All but Renata Montano. I’ve wanted to go back up there. To Capitan Pass. To put a stop to it. Maybe earn a little redemption. But I try to do it alone, she’ll tear me to pieces. Just like she did with those Murphy brought.”

He returns his attention to Lee. ”If you ain’t tryin’ to fool me, if you really want to know what Murphy is, how he got that way, I’ll tell you. But once you know...The House...they ain’t never gonna stop huntin’ you.”

Kansas Kate broke her silence.  Though Roberts was still of the highest interest to her, McCarty suddenly held her full focus.

Her nostrils flared.  She smelled treachery.  Or at least trouble.

"Ranger.  Not one more word sir.  Not until he answers me.  Where betwixt th' devil 'n th' deep blue sea is Tom O'Folliard?"

She stared at him, a thousand yard stare.  The stare of a dead woman.

Because either somebody was hiding something, or somebody was a dumbass, or hey, why not both?

Bonney blinks in mild surprise at the question. ”Well, I’d reckon he’s back at the Tunstall Ranch where we left him. With Mrs. McSween and her hands.”

“He was all anxious about comin’ along. But Charlie called it right. Most of the county figures Tom for dead. We didn’t want the wrong set of eyes catchin’ sight of him.”

She looked at them, still suspicious.  "All right.  That'll do."

She didn't like it.  It wasn't consistent with what O'Folliard had said, at all, but she had no evidence of what she suspected.

But if she was right, wouldn't they just deny having seen him at all?  It'd be easier.

Jacinta relaxed a fraction when the hidden Regulators gave up their position to join the others, but she didn't break cover.  Instead, she kept an eye out for any other trouble.  Buckshot had emerged with a couple of native friends, but she'd seen at least four or five sets of Indian footprints on the way in.  Were they still inside or lurking elsewhere, waiting to cause trouble?

Lee listened to Roberts, paused for Kate to get verification of whatever the hell she was after, and only then responded.

"As far as all that goes, the House hasn't scared me off yet. I know a few others here that ain't scared as well. And I know a few here have seen some crazy things in the recent days so can probably keep an open mind. If you would come over and share it with us, we can all set about seeing how to solve it."

He beckoned over to anyone who hadn't joined him yet.

At Kate's outburst, Dr. Wayland gave her a curious look....then turned that same curious look on the answerers.  He muttered quietly to himself, "...sensible Billy...  sense into... in two?"  Whatever his thought, he didn't seem to be more concerned....or less concerned.  At Lee's signal, he did slide his pistol back away to its hidden holster.  He now drew out a small package and unwrapped a thin, flat, black stick of something.  He pushed it into his mouth and began to chew as he rode up to join the gathering at the mill.  The package of Black Jack chewing gum was offered to Cooper and Kate, noting, "Ah find it is quite good for the nehves."

12:07, Today: Dave Rudabaugh rolled 9,5 using 1d8+2,1d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 7,3.  Notice.

From his spot behind the abandoned Assay Office, the black clad Regulator turns his head, briefly fixing his gaze on Castillo and Bauer in their hiding spot. Giving the pair a slow nod, he returns his attention to the discussions in front of the sawmill.

A hint of movement draws Castillo’s attention northward, to the narrow road that brought her and the others to Blazer’s Mill. There, she spies a fading haze of trail dust, marking the very recent passage, perhaps only minutes ago, of horses, animals she cannot readily spot. Left of the pathway, near a thick collection of spruce and a wide boulder, she catches the wink of something metallic, briefly reflecting the glare of the sun.

Bauer’s attention, in the meantime, is fixed on the sawmill’s second floor windows. ”Those other Apache warriors...if I was the sort to make a bet, I’d wager they’re on the upper floor of the mill, ready to let loose at the first sign of trouble.”

Roberts steps off of the sawmill’s porch, his eyes still narrowed in suspicion, his movements cautious. Nodding to the restaurant, he says, ”We might step in there. Talk over all I’ve seen. All I’ve learned.”

“But...how do I know that at the end of it, you’re not gonna try tie me up and drag me back to Lincoln to hang?”

At Lee's signal, Albert holstered his pistol as well, then dismounted Brandy and tied her near the Ranger's horse. He shrugged at the offered gum and took a piece. He wasn't a big fan of chewing gum, but he also wasn't allergic to it or anything.

As Albert approached, he nodded at the gathered Regulators. "Good day, fellas. Nice ta see y'all again."

In reply to Andrew Roberts (msg # 49):

"Oh he won't."  Kansas Kate reassured him.  It was... odd.  It was very odd.  Normally anything Kate of Kansas uttered was an obscenity, a lamentation on the futility of reality, a warning, a promise to kill somebody... but this was simple reassurance.  That was a new one.

She was visibly on edge.  The rodent in the wheel that was Kansas Kate's brain was turning over and over, there was something about this situation that was wrong, and she didn't know what, and that bothered the hell out of her.

She just stared at the gum like it was a dead lizard.

"I wager you're probably right," Jacinta agreed quietly.  Catching the slight nod from the Regulator behind the office, she couldn't help but smirk.  Another sort of movement caught her attention, however, and she frowned as she turned her attention back to the trail.  "Looks like company," she muttered to Bauer.  "Keep an eye on the others."

Giving up her position, Jacinta moved into the open to get a better look.  Setting her fingers to her lips, she whistled shrilly to get Bryan's attention and gestured toward the trail.  Her rifle was already at her shoulder as she began to advance to investigate, trying to keep to the treeline in case whoever was spying started shooting.

An instant after Castillo gives out her sharp whistle, those gathered near the sawmill hear the whine of an object slicing through the air, followed a heartbeat later by the booming report of a rifle. The scout sees the smoke rise from the shot, in the same spot where she spied the glint of metal.

To Roberts’ right, the young Apache warrior’s head explodes, the contents of his skull blasted onto the wall behind him, the impact leaving only his lower jaw intact. He drops onto the sawmill’s porch, blood drenching the sun bleached planks.

Roberts snarls in fury, his rifle going to his shoulder. Above him, storm clouds curl into existence, filling a sky that was, moments ago, an expanse of unbroken blue.

”Bonney, you treacherous bastard!” As he spits out the words, figures appear in the windows of the sawmill’s upper floor, more warriors aligned with the bounty hunter, bows at the ready.

Bonney’s eyes widen in shock, but at the threat, he teaches for his pistols, blue fire crackling from the right hand weapon.

Seeing their leader move to draw, the rest of the Regulators on the street follow suit.

Rather than pull the trigger of his rifle, Roberts reaches up and grips his obsidian amulet in his free hands, hissing a short phrase through clenched teeth, As he finishes speaking, his body begins to violently twist, appearing to grotesquely pull into itself as Roberts grows pale in color. In an instant, he is unrecognizable as anything human, and in another moment more, he has assumed a new shape entirely, that of a great cat, a cougar, golden fur spreading across its long, powerful form.

The mountain lion lets out a roar and leaps from the porch of the sawmill, closing the space between itself and Billy the Kid in the blink of an eye.
