Chapter 1- Buckley Avenged

In reply to tdrost (msg # 34):

Surveying the damage down the street, the unpleasant yet familiar odors reaches my nostrils. Turning to Jorg, "Sounds good. I'm going to cross the street and try to come at it from the other side."

Making my way toward the back door, I head to the right, go up one block, turn back toward the street, where the HMMV is burning, keeping my pistol low by my side, peering around corners before moving past gaps in buildings.

I get to the street and look both ways, looking for anything suspicious before attempting to cross.

[OOC - do I see anything of importance?]

Chapter 1- Buckley Avenged

Several soldiers from the bar, seemingly able to differentiate themselves from the actions for the pipe hitters, take up positions to cover you as you move out. As the three of you approach the burning wreck, no clue presents itself as to why a number would blow up. As you come closer you tense up as bullets start flying. These were expected, as the last rounds of the machine gun cook off, but it is still unnerving. The sounds of the fire and a few loud shouts from the civillians that are rapidly clearing the area are all that you hear at first.a rasping noise is coming from behind some nearby snow draped shrubbery. A groan or two escapes from the area, it is then you notice the slow rise and fall of the involuntary movements of someone who is in great pain.

Ooc: Your approach as you came up gave you no indication that there was anyone waiting to start shooting at you.

In reply to Jess (msg # 38):

[OOC - Your wish is my command]

Moving toward the street, I instinctively notice the jerky involuntary movements of the recently wounded. I move to assist the injured, waving to a captain with an M4 nearby, "You there, wall decoration, help me get this soldier into a little cover before the next round cooks off and kills him. That would rob me of a chance to show my expertise."

After the soldier has a little solid cover, perform first aid on him.

[OOC - is there any sort of fire brigade response yet? ]

I see Jorg beginning first aid on the victim. "How bad is he, doc? "

Keeping my distance from the wreck, I try to see if there is any visible impact from a rocket or if this appears to be from a bomb.

Chapter 1- Buckley Avenged

Jorg, as you approach you see lying in the snow a man in his 40s. He is not in military uniform, but is wearing a plate carrier. It is the only thing that kept him alive. It appears the explosion ejected him from the Humvee. From what you can see, in addition to the numerous cuts and burns all over his body, there is a large chunk of shrapnel sticking out of his side, and from the sound of his breathing, it has probably cut open his lung. Blood is pooring from the wound. He is conscious, but unable to speak. When he sees you, he reaches under his vest and pulls out a small plastic bag and thrusts it at you. After you grab it, he grabs you and gives you a desperate look right in the eye, coughs, spattering blood on you, then a huge sucking noise of his breath. He dies right after.

In the background you can hear a large vehicle coming down from the base. After a minute you see a large military fire fighting truck moving towards the scene.

In reply to Jess (msg # 41):

Angrily stuff the blood covered bag in my cargo pocket. "Arrrr, somebody is going to be filling body bags. I did not sign up for this crap".

I pull out my firearm and remove the safety before turning to look at the new guy. "He's dead Jim like some others soon will be".

Calling out to Victor, "Hey MC, you see anything yet?"

In reply to Jess (msg # 44):

"Nothing but a burning pile right now. Maybe after the fire's out we can figure out what happened."

I start scooping up large handfuls of snow, trying to at least slow down the fire and hopefully cool off any remaining ammo to keep it from cooking off.

Chapter 1- Buckley Avenged

The vehicle fire is very intense. Oily smoke is pouring off of the vehicle and the heat from the fire radiates outward, making it not only more difficult to breath but also hard to approach. It is difficult to tell where the damage came from, as it is difficult to approach.  The only thing that you are sure of is that you don't see any obvious blast signs on the ground.A skilled specialist may be needed to guess at where the damage came from.

The fire truck will be there in a few minutes.

Chapter 1- Buckley Avenged

The man is not dressed as a soldier, and what is weird is that he is not carrying any ID either. The only things that stand out about him is his plate carrier and the small package he handed Jorg.

The fire is calming a bit. Your stomachs lurch a little when you realize the driver and another soldier were still in the vehicle. They both have been burnt beyond recognition. Whatever blew this vehicle up was heavy duty, and very fast acting. It seems like the man who was thrown from the vehicle was a boon, as now you have clues to what has happened.

Chapter 1- Buckley Avenged

Rabinowicz walks around the area, clearly interested in what happened to the Humvee. He was likely to be called in to inspect anyway due to the surfeit of qualified Combat Engineers and frankly, he was interested in the explosion as well. He might have to wait till a bucket brigade showed up though, they weren't likely to spend the fuel on a firetruck for something that was likely going to burn itself out.

Chapter 1- Buckley Avenged

As you are scanning the area the fire truck shows up. The vehicle, a battered M977, has seen better days. There is also a an old Dodge pickup following. Several soldiers hop out of the back when it pulls to a stop. A few minutes and they have hustled the three of you away from the blaze as they tend to the fire. You did not notice amidst  the commotion another vehicle pull up. A new model civilian car. Three men in big coats get out, leaving the driver inside. Two go over to the dead civilian, the other, a tall stocky black man with a carefully groomed mustache comes towards the three of you."The men over there said you were the first on the scene. Can you tell me what happened? More importantly, did the dead man over there have anything on him?"

In reply to Jess (msg # 54):

"HMMWV blew up, cause unknown. All crew and passengers dead on the scene. I do not believe I am required to give information to unidentified civilians. The information I just gave you is strictly confidential and because I am feeling nice. Now, if you will excuse me, me and the rest have a had a long day." I growl at the civilian, probably a spook, as my hand comes to rest upon my hips, above my holster.

Chapter 1- Buckley Avenged

Calmly as possible Stanley looks at the civilians and smiles, not entirely pleasantly. "Look before you roll up here thinking about dropping orders around, I would suggest you identify yourselves. This is a military base, military personnel, military equipment, and a military matter. Unless you happen to have the one thing in common between all those things, I suggest you skedaddle. Sir." It was quite obvious that while he was being polite, but barring some identification, that politeness would not continue much further.

"Didn't really see anything, other than what you see here. Hummer blew up, we came out of the fine establishment across the street," gesturing toward the bar, "Doc found that guy,"pointing at the ejection victim, "dead or near dead when we arrived, and I was trying to at least slow down the fire."

"Now, if you fine 'gentlemen' don't mind, I'm going to go have another drink before heading back to our quarters." I start to walk back to the bar.

Chapter 1- Buckley Avenged

A sly grin appears on his face, and then he chuckles. "Ah! I am glad to see that there is some professionals left in the field.! Gives me hope! This will make things interesting! He chuckles again and waives back at the men he came in with. Finish up gentlemen, I think we are done here! He looks back at the three of you and says Enjoy your evening fellas. I am sure I will have my answers from you soon! With that, he turns and heads back over to the other men, who seem to be working on putting the dead man in a body bag, obviously with the intention to put the body in the trunk of the car.

The firefighters seem to have the blaze under control, and the other soldiers there have cordoned off the street.

Turning to the group, I lower my voice, "We need to make ourselves scarce. I do not trust that rat-fink. Let's head back to the barracks with the safeties off, shall we?"
