1001 - Character Sheets Are User Editable

Character Sheets are now editable by their participants.  It is intended that the character sheet serve as a sort of resume' for the participant, listing any areas of subject matter expertise or preference the participant may have.

More than that, though, each participant is given a number when first joining.  Posting by number is kind of dry, though, so participants should please update their sheets with the handle they want to use when posting or replying here.

My handle here is, of course, The Traveller.  When I am posting as moderator for any of the boards, my post will be in this color, symbolic of Traveller red.

UPDATE - 01 Jul 2018:  I keep forgetting that not everyone uses as dark a theme as I do.  My apologies - in the default theme, in particular, large volumes of Red Text can be rough to get through.  I'm going to use a red greeting similar to:

Greetings from The Traveller,

when I speak as moderator, leaving the rest of the text in the default color for your theme.

1003 - Jump Table

Topic 0001 - Jump Table has been added to help everyone find stuff more easily.

Given the nature of RPoL, which does not fix topics in any order or provide subtopics, this is the best method I've come up with for bring order from chaos.

1005 - AFK

I have been away from the forum for a while working on a project that is nearing its testing phase.  I should have mentioned this sooner, and apologize for not doing so.  I should wrap up preliminary tests this Saturday, and be back in the saddle by Sunday sometime.

I'm back, sort of...

Thursday morning about 0200 Central, my mother fell and fractured a hip joint.  I've been at the hospital all day today while she was in surgery.  She came through the procedure well enough, but it took a lot out of her, and recovery looks to be a long road yet.  I may be in and out for a while, but I will be around.

Beowulf, in my absences, any decisions you may need to make to keep things going will be met with my full faith and confidence in you.

I will keep everyone posted.

1005 - I'm Back (well, sort of...)

This is likely to turn into something of a rant.  Don't worry, I'm not upset with anyone here...

Today, I went and visited my mom in her new surroundings at Driftwood Nursing Center.  She's awake, alert, and is eating and drinking.  She appears to be recovering from her surgery slowly.  But let me back up a bit.

While in the hospice unit at the hospital, the doctors attending to her care were swearing up and down she was a goner.  Mom has Parkinson's Disease, and she was aspirating food and liquids, and had contracted pneumonia and pseudomonas in both lungs.  They said her Parkinson's had entered a "terminal phase" where she would continue to aspirate, and start to lose control of more bodily functions as her nervous system continued to shut down.  Hospice Care (comfort care) at a Skilled Nursing Facility was, in their considered professional opinions, the best option.

So... either they are right, and I should disbelieve what I'm seeing at the nursing facility as just a temporary reprieve, or she's going to recover.  Maybe it's best to take this one day at a time for now.

Right now, on this day, it looks like I may have made some wrong decisions because of too much "doom and gloom" from doctors who had little or no stake in continuing to care for an ancient Parkinson's sufferer on Medicare and Medicaid.  Only time will tell.

I'm back in the saddle here, folks, because I've done all I can do for my mother for the time being.  It makes me glad to see her seeming to improve, but I'm about to go crazy wondering whether or not what I've done to her life with these decisions was the right thing.

I'm beginning to be roundly disgusted with hospitals, doctors, and their specialist ilk who seem to see the rest of humanity as walking piggy banks.

The nurses caring for my mother, on the other hand, are angels on earth, and are taking very good care of her and seeing to her comfort.  It may just be that she needed more peaceful surroundings in which to rest to be able to recover...

Anyhoo, a cautionary tale lies here for all of you whose parents are still alive:  learn something now about how the medical community deals with elderly patients for the protection of your beloved parents, and for your own sake, as you will likely travel down that same road eventually.

I'm glad I have time, for the time being, to resume my duties here and elsewhere on RPoL.  I miss you folks something fierce.

1005 - I'm Out Again...

An Update to The Traveller (msg # 7):

As of this morning, my mother was moved from hospice care to the emergency room, just as I am moving downrange to help my son, who has helped so much with her care for the last few years, move into his new apartment.

I am likely to be away from the keyboard for at least the next few days, into the weekend, if not longer.

I am deeply sorry to all who are participating here, but I must see to the living and the dying in my immediate family.  I will rmail everyone and post here and in my other games as this most recent of developments continues to unfold.

If you have family you haven't seen in a while, I implore you, use the time you have to be with them if you can, or just call and let them know you love them.  We can never express enough love, one for another, in this life.

1005 - UPDATE on Mom

In reply to The Traveller (msg # 8):

Folks, my mom is returning to her previous berth at the nursing center.  Her condition is stable for the time being, but not especially good.  I won't get into specifics, but we are taking it day-by-day, minute-by-minute for the foreseeable future.  There's nothing else for it.

Meanwhile, over the last week, I was able to get my son moved into an apartment very close to ours.  It is a thrill for me to be able to have a larger part in his life after so long.

quote:
So... today we have good news, und we have bad news.
Die erste Hälfte wird nicht verstehen,
Was ich jetzt eben gesagt habe,
Und die zweite Hälfte weiss noch immer nicht,
Was ein Earschplittenloudenboomer ist.

Yeah... I'm listening to Steppenwolf while I work.  I hope to be getting back to an actual presence here sometime very soon.

1005 - UPDATE - I'm Back

Yeah...

I think I may have mom's affairs in a somewhat manageable state now, and her health is better, but still doesn't seem to have long-term prospects for recovery to a quality of life that would permit her leaving the nursing facility.  Minute by minute, day by day...

I'm going to try to be a more active presence here and in my other games as circumstances permit.  Pray continue as I come and go.

1005 - Stormy Weather

Tropical Storm Gordon threatens to strengthen to hurricane force by its arrival in our area sometime tomorrow evening.

As a member of my workplace's Hurricane Rideout Crew, I expect to be AFK for a while if the weather truly turns south.  Since RPoL is blocked from work, this means I may be dark for several days.

Please carry on in my absence, and I will send up a flare when things reach a semblance of normalcy.

1005 - Apologies

I can see I've been away for far too long, and a lot has happened in my life about which I won't bore you all.  Things do look to be going somewhat slowly here, so let me apologize.

What I'm apologizing for is starting and running a Traveller game without announcing it here.

It all started when I answered an ad in Wanted - GMs for a Referee to run a game for someone just getting started with The Traveller Book.  As we batted around the parameters of the game, discussion moved to a topic in Game Proposals, Input, and Advice.

Before I knew it (only a couple of days), I had eight players, some with two characters in creation, and was busily putting together the infrastructure and some basic game ideas for adventures set just after the Fourth Frontier War.

This thing took on a vibrant life of its own, and proved to me that Travellers' Aid Society was a good idea, after all.

So... be warned, prospective Referees:  if you build it, or even hint about building it in GPIA, they will join, and maybe more quickly than you ever dreamed possible.  The desire to play Traveller is still very much alive and well here at RPoL!

The game:  A March Spinward.  I haven't even bothered with a game ad because this thingy filled up so quickly.

Moral:  Get out there and get you some, Refs!  There are plenty folks here just waiting for adventure in the far future.

1006 - Moving On

Folks, I've been away for quite a while, and that looks like it will have to continue.  This group already has a co-GM (to whom I can pass the reins if he's still willing).  I'm sorry, but this must be - it is, as they say, what it is.

Aw, hell, I'm not good at this!  It's been eatin' at me for a while now, and it's time to move on.  I'll be back in about two and a half years, by which time I'll be retired.  Let's leave it at that, shall we?

Beowulf, I'm sorry to ask, but please recruit a new Co-GM and keep things going here if you can.  I'll be around to do what must be done to manage the transfers needed, but after that I must move on.
