Rules and expectations

Taking part

If you wish to take part in this game, you should have an interest in playing a Matoran character, have the free time to do at least a couple of posts a week, and be willing to do a bit of creative writing. Individual posts in the game don't need to be very long, but a couple of sentences and a meaningful action is generally expected.

General rules

Show respect to your fellow players and to the game master.

The characters are all supposed to be working together. Don't cause petty and needless fights.

Try to keep the tone somewhat similar to other BIONICLE story media. That is: Only minimal swearing (preferably none), no sexually explicit content, characters have 85% mechanical bodies and don't bleed. This game is marked as "Mature" due to the general potential for fantasy violence and intrigue, but make sure to act mature and keep it clean.

Don't draw in crossover content or real-world things that don't fit the Matoran Universe setting.

Keep in-character (IC) and out-of-character (OOC) speak separated. The game topics should have IC content with OOC used only for comments and clarifications regarding dice rolls, rules, and actions taken. Other posts may be posted in a separate discussion topic.

Please write in third person past tense.
Example: "He walked up to the building" instead of "I walk up to the building".

Please apply some spell checking and proper formatting to your posts so they are nice and easy to read for everyone.

Please use quotation marks for speech, and italics for thoughts. You may use color to indicate dialogue and thoughts, but don't go overboard with hard-to-read colors.
Speech: "I am talking," he said.
Thoughts: I don't want to do this, she thought.

Don't post too quickly. If you've taken an action, give other players a chance to respond as well before rushing off to do new stuff. The pace of this game is expected to be a few posts a week, so it's a somewhat slow burner.

Don't post too slowly either. Obviously, we can't wait around for weeks just for one post. A healthy balance is best.

Don't take control over other people's characters or non-player characters.

When acting IC: Don't assume that your action automatically succeeds ("god-modding") unless it's a basic one. For example, picking up an item is fine, and moving around freely when there's no risk involved is fine. Attempting to jump across a wide chasm or striking a Rahi in melee combat, on the other hand, would require a roll of the dice.

If you can tell that an action is risky or has an uncertain outcome, you may roll on your own before posting, as the result is saved publicly. You may narrate your post up until the roll, but keep the outcome ambiguous until the game master and/or other characters have a chance to respond. If you do make a roll, describe what it's for and make sure to act on it.

In order to save time, I trust my players with judging which skills apply to a situation, and then making their own dice rolls for certain actions. If you're uncertain, just leave it open-ended and let the game master call for a roll if needed.
