Warmaster:
The consensus seems to be that you want to settle into the Forstlager and consider your options, right?
The consensus is to "run off and play Avatar with the natives"*, this idea is not very high on Kapitan Konnikov's list of "yes we should do this" for a fairly large number of reasons, most of which he hasn't really shared yet, just a few of the more obvious ones.
But Konnikov is only in charge of the Russian troops, and is actually flexible at that (being that Malkin is a PC and Zholdin is technically outside his chain of command), so if they want to run off and meet the natives with the Brit and American OSI troops, the Player is fine with that (Konnikov will feel put upon in the most Russian manner possible).
Since if the OSI leaders decide to go play footsie with the natives, Konnikov would want some trustworthy eyes among them, which means Zholdin (to represent the Party) and someone competent (Malkin and a spotter) to protect him and get him back to the Forest Fort when it all (inevitably) goes wrong. Probably a few extra to act as go betweens (like two fireteams).
This of course implies that natives are close, and not a "four day drive one way".
* No snark implied, just humor. Pretty sure I'm the only PC advocating a "slow approach" to meet and greet with the natives, not necessarily the Player, as a Player I can recognize the direction the game's winds are blowing (kinda, maybe)...

But it also seems that you're not sure what you could (or should) do.
I was giving Max time to respond directly Konnikov's objections, or just do his own thing. Major Lewis has his command (as does Captain Jackson), Konnikov is not going to shoot them for "disobeying orders" (besides that would be Zholdin's job, :P ).
I was also giving Zholdin time to give some input from the "Party's perspective", being Politruk that's pretty much his thing, and depending on how spicy he feels,
he can override Konnikov. Historically this wasn't always the greatest move for a Commisar, it really depends on the Commisar and the officer they are "pulling rank on' and for what reason.
I was actually going suggest we split up temporarily if Max gave pushback to setting up in the Fort (or ask the GM if they were okay with another split up, it's more work on them after all - if not Konnikov can sigh a deep Soviet sigh and move along with the consensus).

I'll write something up to get you back on track, but please let me know if I should address anything specific, ie, what sort of information are you missing?
All the information we don't have. Yes please. ;)
Like where's Kemmel, and what is the best way to get him and go home, that would make this so much simpler... :P
But seriously, Malkin asked a very important question that I'm not sure our two natives allies can answer easily:
"How far would we have to go for an audience?"
