Issue 01.2 - The Nanotech Clinic

The party spends 3 hours exploring the city, setting up base camp, and traveling. 69 hours remain. It is now early afternoon.

The heroes arrive at the location specified in Old Peter's map. The wasteland around the Pit consists of mostly-flat badlands of fine, dusty soil mixed with pulverized bedrock, slag, and fine glass particles created by the immense heat of the orbital weapon strike during the war. In places a few stubborn, scraggly plants grow in cracks between sun-baked plates of clay that protect their roots from the acid rain. Although most of the city is buried under meters of debris, in places the outline of rooves form unnaturally-shaped hills and the blasted steel skeletons of once-modern office towers break the surface.

You stand between two such towers, one of which lies partially collapsed into the side of another, casting a dark triangular shadow over the area. The wind whistles through the ruined structures above, causing the stressed and twisted metal to creak and groan ominously, and the rusty stench of stagnant water and metal assaults your nostrils. A handful of girders and other debris stick out of the dirt like the beard hairs of some horrible titan, having impaled themselves in the surface over the last few decades. Some large boulders are scattered about as well, shielded from the blowing dust by the metal hulks around them. In places you can even see the ancient air conditioning units that occupy the rooves of buried apartment buildings.

A dozen or so cyber-rats scurry about the ground in the relative shelter, chittering and squeaking, and presumably more reside in the buildings above. A pre-war nuisance, they were once lab rats augmented with self-replicating prosthetics, notably including a growth stimulator that causes the largest specimens to grow the size of coyotes. Now they are everywhere on Earth, readily eating undefended food, scrap metal, and most animals smaller than themselves. It is hard not to notice the way they stare at and size you up with their large, glowing red eye prosthetic.

This is the place, but there is no obvious sign of the clinic.
