Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

GM LoonyLadle:
Bad Design Decisions
Skills Required: some way of building defenses quickly.
Some fool thought it would be a good idea to dispose of the radioactive slag from the foundry by building it into the town walls. Worse, the wall is still incomplete in many places, leaving the town vulnerable. If the Pitt is to have any hope of surviving long term its defenses will need to be redone from scratch.

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

Terranovae:
Teranovae will meet with Gyarados Skullfucker and inquire into "The Pitt's" defenses.  She will volunteer to coordinate with her Security Thugs to survey the incomplete defensive wall.  Teranovae will only volunteer to help asking to be allowed to fix the problem but will want to coordinate with Gyarados' people and especially her engineers to first plan out where the wall is needed and what features would be nice to have installed in the walls {crenellations atop the wall, gun emplacements for artillery pieces, logistic installation for communications, internal fortified hallways for easy of troop movement and concealment}.  All these things Teranovae can provide with coordination with Gyarados' people.

Once a plan is designed and readied Teranovae will have those citizens living near the wall to be temporarily removed ~ promising their homes/abodes will be restored for their return once the construction is done which will not take very long.

At the wall Teranovae will first use her 'At One with the Green' to assess the history of how the wall was made and find the radioactive slag in its construction... she will first shape these materials out of the wall and reshaped them safely into 10 pound ingots for potential refurbished use.  Any irradiated environs she will clean up with her 'Heal the Earth' power to disperse and neutralize the hazardous radiation and any and all pollution.

"Heal the EARTH": Transform 10 (Alternate; Chemical, Divine, Earth, Elemental, Ground, Life Force, Natural, Stone; Affects: Broad > 1 Thing – Pollutants to Natural Raw Materials, Transforms 800lbs, DC20, 30cu ft, DC20; Affects Objects-Only [-0/Rk], Shapeable Area [+1rk/Rk], Distracting [-1rk/Rk], Source: Must be in Contact with Ground [-1rk/lvl])

The 'construction site', "cleaned up"...then the Earth goddess gets to work...

She will raise new stone out of the very ruins of the city, out of the concreate streets itself ~ shaping the stone to the design plan raising sloped, anti artillery angled wall of 20'ft height providing overlapping crossing fields of fire from the walls low but certainly an obstacle that cannot be ignored and angled to take concentrated punishing bombardment and not break!

"Geosphere Creation": Create 9 (Earth, Elemental, Gravity, Ground, Magnetic, Natural, Stone; Range 225/450/900’ft; Volume: 500 cft., DC 19; Innate [1rk], Movable [+1rk/Lvl], Stationary [1rk]; Permanent [+0rk/Lvl], Side Effect: on failure - Causes Minor Earthquakes [-1rk/Lvl])

"Control Geosphere": Move Object 10 (Alternate; Earth, Elemental, Gravity, Ground, Magnetic, Natural, Stone; Range 250/500/1,000’ft; 25 tons, DC 25; Damaging [+1rk/Lvl]; Source: Must have Earth/Stone/Crystal/Metal [-1rk/Lvl], Side Effect: on failure - Causes Minor Earthquakes [-1rk/Lvl])

She will alternate between creating as needed and shaping to form the walls of solid defense.  This process will NOT be fast but it will be FAR Faster than any mundane mortal construction teams as the very stone and metal flow to the Earth goddesses will.  The area is suffused with the green radiance of her active wonder power... gravity, stone and metal being the very servants of her will!

As to her promise she does indeed replace any civilian housing removed or destroyed in her construction with well shaped abodes with solid walls and spaces for the eventual installation of conveniences of air, power and water... waste removal to portions of a sewer system that will be her next project for 'The Pitt' community when time presents itself.

There is NO WAY the power of a wonder will not be obvious to ALL the citizens of 'The Pitt', as their city is wrapped in fortress level fortified wall of clean imposing stone and metal!

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

I would like two skill checks! If you don't have the skills you need, maybe another of the party can use their time slot to assist you? The DCs are 10 so if you take a routine result you cannot fail unless you have an Intellect penalty, but every additional degree of success will result in better wall performance during Mother's seige!

First, an Expertise check with a skill representing knowledge of the tactical necessities of a wall. Military, Tactics, or especially more focused skills like Seige Warfare will be useful here.

Second, an Expertise check for the quality of the wall itself. Expertise in Architecture is the obvious go-to here but stuff like Demolitions could also be relevant!

Neo meanwhile takes matters entirely on their own. Invoking one of the biggest displays of their power so far, transforming Terra's framework to their standard, a glossy black wall of hyperdurable carbon. Neo fits a small panel of lead between to protect from the mechanical senses of mother's forces

OOC: Neo will just take 10 for 20's on the expertise rolls

Neo will communicate with Tera mostly, letting her deal with most of the public and social communication.

Neo also begins considering a Project. something special for the defences

The Earth goddess nods appreciatively and replies, "...if it 'breaks'.. {snort}, You will have to repair it... it is far too processed for my powers to replicate or repair its full durability.  It would be like smearing concrete in the broken seam of composite resin plastic wall for me to do it... 'fixed' but not really restoring its cross-sectional pristine durability and integrity."

Pointing she directed their attention to the wall interior hollow structures for troop and logistical movement and infrastructure, "..I made the walls of layered Quartzite and Granite.  In 1 ton interlocking blocks designed to resist earthquakes.  The seams are precise with no mortar... you will need a monoedged blade to fit between the blocks. It is very heavy and should resist impacts and disperse energy quite efficiently."

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

The two wonders working together do and improve upon in the span of an hour what Mayor Skullfucker's men took months to accomplish. The soldiers watch in awe as their patrol route is suddenly lined in practical yet elegant fortifications that could provide more than ample cover against most any attack from below. Every two hundred feet a covered guard tower provides protection from the elements. In places Neo suggests simply tearing down the old wall in order to move it to a more strategically advantageous position, and also give the town within some more room to grow.

Three degrees of success on both the design and construction checks. The Pitt is now the proud owner of a strong, fortified wall with no obvious vulnerabilities or weak points.

The section of the wall near the smelting plant and the ravine seems to have been a dumping ground for mining rubble and waste slag. Either out of malice or stupidity, the radioactive impurities of the reforged steels were simply dumped in with the rest of the rocks and have become a growing health hazard for those who work near it regularly. Teranovae settles this oversight fairly swiftly, giving the workers a good talking-down before turning her Wondrous healing powers to the stone itself.

In doing so however, she awakens something that had been slumbering and growing within unknown to the city at large. A thirty-foot-long string of boulders rouses itself and rips free from the remnants of the old wall, five metal shards glowing blue-green with Cerenkov radiation serving as perverse eyes. Now that it is awake, the two Wonders can feel the darkness of its unclean presence pressing against their souls.

It's not Kaiju-class; not even close. But it is a Horror, and it is pissed off!

The Slagix attacks! Its initiative modifier is +2.

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

Teranovae regards the coalescing Horror of mana and stone as it rises casting its shadow over the Emerald Goddess.  Her body is suffused with an emerald aura of light as her gravitic force field reflexively manifests.

There is no fear in the Earth Goddesses tone ~ she is Fearless, "Ah.  As I suspected with this close proximity to a randomly erupting manapool."

She smiled sadly, "Hello Darkness .. my old friend, your form is different every time but I feel the same essence animates you ~ fear, pain, naked hatred for the unfairness of it all.  You wish to ..Talk again do you?  Let's... Converse!"

Teranovae regarded that Neo was reacting slowly but her cube of deconstruction was familiar enough.  Tera nodded at her deciding best that Teamwork be used to vanquish this foe. She times her actions to work in conjunction with Neo's for maximum effect but went on the evasive to maximize her speed and agility to dodge its attacks...

Rising upon her stone surfboard of gleaming Hematite when Neo attacked she also did moving away from the city walls also attempting to draw the horror away from the city proper to avoid Pitt citizens being injured in the coming battle.

She could feel its hunger for the life force of the living insatiable desire for the mana bonded to the Wonder Flesh of both her and Neo. Hungry to devour even their minds into its tempest of emotions and pain that spawned it...

Calling to the horror, "I SEE YOU UNQUIET THING ~ I AM TERANOVAE DAUGHTER OF GAEA, COME SLAGIX... ITS TIME YOU RETURNED TO DARKNESS!!!"

Speaking to her commlink which she knows most of the rest of the Team can hear, <"Neo, the horror has a core that its essence is ...knotted around if we destroy that that should dissipate it.  I do not know if you have senses that can detect the core but an attempt to do so would be appreciated. Remember, its a Horror so the normal laws of matter/energy do not always apply... we must draw it away from the city... be defensive at first to probe its defenses its large so it may be easier to hit.  But its attacks may be poisonous as it is a thing of pollution of soul and environment ~ beware its radiation!">

Taking flight meaning to stay out of it physical melee range as she draws it after her timing her attack to hit when Neo strikes unleashing a barrage of crystal earthen shards to attempt to break up its physical body.  The attack is more meant to keep its attention than anything serious attempt to destroy it... Teranovae seeks to draw it outside the city first before unleashing full power geo-gravitic assault.  She wants to see how vulnerable it is to Neo's deconstruction cube as her mind races to develop an attack strategy to exploit any weaknesses the duo might discover.

Actions:
Initiative: 17 {Ready Action - 'Trigger: When Neo attacks to use Teamwork Advantage'}
Move Action:  Flight out over wall to draw Horror after her and Neo - away from city
Geo-Gravitic 'Surfboard': Flight 6 (Alternate; Ballistic, Bludgeoning, Cutting, Divine, Gravity, Kinetic, Morphic, Projectile, Stone, Water; Speed: 120 miles/hour, 1800 feet/round; Platform [-1rk])

Standard Action: Team Attack w/ Teamwork {+5} w/Evasion & Defensive Attack {-5} [+5 Defense, +2 Dodge AoE] - Crystal/Earthen Shards: Damage 10 (Alternate; Earth, Elemental, Magnetic, Natural, Piercing, Projectile, Stone; Range 250/500/1,00’ft, DC 25; Increased Range: ranged [+1rk/Lvl], Multiattack  [+1rk/Lvl]; Side Effect: on failure - Causes Minor Earthquakes [-1rk/Lvl])
10:35, Today: Terranovae rolled 11 using 1d20+10.  RC: Geo-Grav Array [+10], Crystal Earthen Shard-Team Attack w/Teamwork [+5], Defensive attack [-5] {+10}. {Nat 1} [FAIL]
Defense:  25

Teranovae tries to time the attack and her timing is not off... but the Horror is faster than she anticipated and the blast of shards goes wide and is more then she has wished for as the Very walls and street quake as portions of the section of the newly made city wall tear free and spray ineffectively at the horror and this side of the city quakes in the Earth Goddess' frustration unleashed. Good thing she was leaving the city proper and that she'd had the insight to form the wall of earthquake resistance blocks or the damage might not have been so localized.

OOC: If I had my Hero point I'd spend it to negate this but I spent ito to make the wall great... had no idea there would be a combat involved Ah well!

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

The aura of menace the Horror projects is not so much an emotional one but an existential dread. Merely observing it is like a hammer blow to the resolve, and even one as fearless as the goddess can feel it. It does not deter her -- in fact, it may even spur her on in defiance -- but the slick unnatural oily sensation crawling over her mind is all too real nonetheless.

The creature of rock and slag regards Teranovae. Its face, if such a thing could be called that, was unreadable; but she got the impression it was... assessing her? Sure enough, when she attacks the horror bobs to the side with far more speed than a natural creature of its size ought to be able to muster. The crystalline shards crash to the dusty earth behind it, kicking up huge dark brown plumes of disturbed dirt.

Underneath her, for about a quarter of a mile in all directions, Teranovae sees a wave of inky purple energy cover the earth. Rocks, pebbles, loose objects, and one of the mayor's men who had been supervising the renovations of the wall are all pulled thirty feet into the air. That's right, it's a horror; it sees Teranovae's powers as they truly are, and how to defeat them. With but a modicum of effort it has covered the earth in an antigravity field, trying to prevent the goddess from returning back to terra firma and cut her off from her power source!

Still unmoving from its position and recognizing the futility of trying to hit the soaring goddess, the slag creature rights itself and fixes Teranovae in the glint of its radioactive eyes. Whatever spiritual malady it was projecting before was nothing in comparison to the horrible psychic assault being focused on her mind now. KILL EVERYONE, her subconscious mind roars at her. MAKE THEM BLEED. THE BLOOD OF SINNERS WILL FERTILIZE THE EARTH. IT IS THE ONLY WAY. KILL. MURDER. DESTROY THEM ALL.

Slagix move action: Ground Denial! Massive burst Move Object. Anyone on the ground must oppose or be lifted thirty feet into the air and be Hindered while within the area of effect.
- 14:13, Today: GM LoonyLadle, for the NPC Slagix, rolled 27 using 1d20+9.  Antigravity Field.

Slagix standard action: Soul Scourge! Perception affliction, will DC 19. One degree of failure: dazed + impaired. Two degrees: compelled + defenseless.

Neo strikes the creature, breaking down its rocky hide into something less resiliant. Underneath the seemingly dull stone is a spongy metal amalgamate that glows with blue-green light. Radiation counters in the immediate vicinity immediately become mildly agitated, startling citizens already concerned about the noise.

14:22, Today: GM LoonyLadle, for the NPC Slagix, rolled 19 using 1d20+8.  Fortitude vs. Neo.

Teranovae was frustrated that she missed the opportunity to capitalize on Neo's efforts when she noticed the Horror was not moving from it's location to follow them out of town.  Which meant they would have to end this fight FAST!

Then Slagix created a large gravity wave of null gravity making gaining contact with the ground in its area ... problematical.

That was new...
Did the Horrors have a semi-collective consciousness?  Did they "remember" her as the Earth Goddess who gained strength from contact with the life infusing Earth at her feet?

She spotted the Pitt City workman caught up in the null gravity field and angled her flying stone surf-board around to go snatch him from the dangerous environment without hesitation... when her mind was assaulted by a directed psychic attack!

"...UhnnAh~ "

21:46, Today: Terranovae rolled 26 using 1d20+8.  Teranovae - Will Resistance  [+8]. – 26

The Alien thoughts hammered into her consciousness painfully calling up visions of her elemental fury unleashed ~ UNCHAINED and the world trembled in her fury and wrath personified!

Teranovae visibly reeled, but she forced such thoughts from her mind ~ "NO!!"

"Mankind is under MY protection!"

She pushed her powers to their limit to multi-task ~ the extra effort tiring as she pushed her limits and swooped in the scoop the Pitt Worker onto her surf-board putting his arm around her slender waist, "{gasp} Hold on." ~ as she flew back out of Slagix's reach.

"So darkness-Slagix you want to play with gravity?"

Teranovae raised her hands perched atop her flying surfboard and bringing her hands up to aim at the segmented mana and stone horror, she unleashes her Singularity Lance into its head - the light in the area dimmed turning distinctly dark green hue for a split second and a thunderous BOOM resounds as beam of darkish emerald pure gravity emits from the Earth goddess' hands to smite the Horror...

"RETURN TO DARKNESS!"

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

For a creature made seemingly out of stone it is perhaps not as resilient to attack as Tetanovae suspected -- or, more likely, she is just that powerful! Her dark energy gravity lance attack tears chunks from the creature, which recoils away from the force of the blow. It doesn't vocalize any sign of pain; maybe it can't, maybe it doesn't even know what pain is, maybe the pain of existence is so great that being blasted by a goddess' worth of power doesn't even register. Regardless, it is clearly damaged by her efforts!

The creature fires a beam of blue light from one of its bulbous body sections, trying to strike down the goddess. The attack just barely misses her, the heat of the radioactive ray making the hair on her skin stand on end.

Neo's own attack strikes the unsuspecting creature, dealing massive damage. While they had previously been beneath the horror's notice, they definitely have its attention now!

Teranovae moves, move-by scoops up the worker, then comes to a hover and lances the slagix. The monster is bruised and dazed!

The slagix is unable to use its move action to maintain the antigravity field due to being dazed. It uses its standard action to attack Teranovae with a Rad Ray, and misses.

Neo blasts the slagix and does massive damage, brusing and staggering the beast.

In reply to GM LoonyLadle (msg # 15):

Teranovae is a little winded with her frantic efforts to save the civilian and keep the pressure upon the Horror Slagix... but brief as the exchanges have been the longer the Horror continues existence the bigger a threat to the innocent citizens it becomes, especially since they cannot draw it from the city!

She must keep her distance ...no matter how much she would desire to directly engage the monster corp-a-corp to focus its attention upon her taking ALL the personal risk away from the fragile lives around her and bash it personally into scattered fragments! She glances over her shoulder at the Pitt worker holding tightly to her back face buried into her shoulder... hand tightening around her ...trembling.

She sighed mentally... 'Hope this works.. Neo is really hurting it.. so.. just focus on destroying its body...'

Still keeping mobile the Emerald Goddess flew about circling Slagix and unleashing a spray of hardened crystal shards at the animated Horror... positioning herself to make her line of fire away form the civilians fleeing...

Dozens of shards crash against the horror's rocky hide. The creature rapidly rotates and cycles out overstressed pieces of its body, taking every hit with a degree of finesse and luck one often doesn't see from the oversized abominations. It almost seems to leer at her as she collects herself after the attack; do you fear me now?

Still, it is quite badly injured and still reeling from Neo's attack. With a deafening rumble the monster burrows, tail-first, into the earth and disappears from sight! Horrors do not retreat, so this must somehow be a prelude to something else...

Three degrees of success on multiattack, and the slagix gets a natural 20 and just barely succeeds its toughness check! Oof!

The slagix burrows underground with its standard action!

Given this, I understand if Neo wants to change their action.

In reply to GM LoonyLadle (msg # 18):

Teranovae sees Neo move to cover Slagix should it return but she does not hesitate to attack it now... Not allowing it to flee underground she streatchs out her will and a ripping growling sound fills the air as the spot on which Slagix burrowed down opens up again as a gaping 30'ft wide animated earth stone and steel chasm 500'ft deep lined with jagged rocky, metal and crystaline Teeth the size of building doors and with a roars of fury begins to chew on Slagix from the bottom of the 500'ft deep Earthen Gullet and maw of jagged teeth!

CHAAaaaTOOOOORRRRRRRAAAAAhhhhhhHHH!!!  'Crunch~CRUNCH! Crunch~CRUNCH! Crunch~CRUNCH! Crunch~CRUNCH!'

She starts the HIDEOUS Earthen Maw Animated by the Earth Goddess' FURY, then moves up and away on her stone surfboard to set the pitt worker down safely far away from the fight but leaving Neo to deal with the results should Slagix pull itself free from the crushing grinding earthen gullet of doom!

Turning to her passenger, "High Time we get you to safety this is getting serious...!"

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

Teranovae's attack forces the injured Slagix to surface in order to escape from the terror mouth. The creature has some fresh new injuries from the maw... but, worryingly, some of its prior injuries seem to have healed! The horror roars to the sky in fury before being startled out of its fearsome display by Neo's readied attack!

23:46, Today: GM LoonyLadle, for the NPC Slagix, rolled 16 using 1d20+12-3.  Toughness vs Teranovae.
23:48, Today: GM LoonyLadle, for the NPC Slagix, rolled 8 using 1d20+6.  Dodge vs Teranova.

The Slagix recovers one bruise from Regeneration, then surfaces. It doesn't have an action available to attack.

Neo's readied Cooldown fires off, then he gets another action. Finish it off, murder hologram cube girl!

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

Neo Launches their readied cooldown, and quickly follows up with another before the Slagix can do anything. Pinning each projectile down Slagix and letting their dismantling power spread out and consume the Horror

Today: Neo rolled 11 using 1d20+10.  Readied Cooldown!
Today: Neo rolled 27 using 1d20+10.  I'll do it AGAIN.

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

Neo's dismantling attack finishes off the Horror. The false creature roars to the sky once more in impotent fury even as its body is disintegrated, the magical matter composing its form dissolving into clouds of inky indigo-black darkness that gradually disperses back into the aether from whence it came. Its glowing eyes glare furiously at... not Neo, the one who destroyed it, but the Earth goddess. It stares sightlessly until even those vestigial traces disincorporate.

A handful of Pitt citizens watching safely from a distance cautiously emerge from behind cover. When nothing terrible happens to them they rouse a cheer for the girls' victory, directive their positive energy to the last remnants of the slagix' baleful influence and blowing it away like dust before a mighty breeze, leaving only the battle damage to the environment at evidence that it ever existed at all.

Side quest completed. Pitt morale +1! You may continue to roleplay for a bit if you like.

Teranovae reacts focusing on Slagix's eyes she creates two pure sapphire gems around the point of Slagix own blazing incandescent eyes in an attempt to capture some of its essence in hopes to later ease the troubled mana spirit's pain in death.  She pours her divine power into the creation trying to hold.. the unholdable.. like water or sand the mana of the dying Horror slips through her fingers.  For mana to have form... it Must be anchored with life... and Slagix has had its link to its life force dissolved by it forms destruction.

Soon there is nothing left of Slagix but fading mist... on the wind...

Still Teranovae cradles the two dead sapphire gems to her breast... but there is no light in them.  They are just lifeless stone and a deep sorrow comes over her...

She is pulled from her melancholy by the cheers of the citizenry.  She looks up and smiles for them waving.  She slips the Sapphires away and descends upon her gleaming hematite surfboard to see to the injured and wounded healing all who will let her.

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

Neo sees the horror dissolving and taking what little horror matter that they had collected already, dissipates it into the air in a show of victory.

She then does a bit of offhand clean-up of any radioactive particles nearby before returning to the wall.

Side Quests 1.1: Bad Design Decisions

Before departing Teranovae will collect the radioactive elements she extracted from the ruinous 'wall' she had deconstructed in the creation of the new wall.  Deciding the radioactive materials were best left for Neo's analysis at a more opportune time she gathered to hazardous materials and flew them to the Nano-Clinic with the attached hanger for Neo's mobile HQ to leave the materials there encased in a create mineral cocoon of 1 foot of pure lead.

Satisfied the extracted wall radioactive materials were secure she sought out Legacy X... it never occurred to her to scour the remains of Slagix for any radioactive reside... fortunately Neo thought of that...
