The Falconer’s Spire towered over the city. It shadowed Neva Borne like a stern father, watching. The whispers were relentless, and fortunately were urging Neva to keep moving away from that shadow. The city was huge, and broken, and weird. The whispers increased to a disorienting cacophony at the first huge stone head they encountered. It was twenty feet tall, and the features were cracked away, until there were only two eyes in the gargantuan statue. Above the muddy cobbles, chunks of floating buildings were used as anchors for the rope nets and tied planks that made up the overhead pathways through the city. There was no qualm against blocking an alley if it was convenient to go over. Beggars pled, mostly drow, hoping for some few coins. It looked like most of them were angling for their next drink.

The city guard were an unsubtle bunch, clomping noisily along their established routes. Neva was untroubled.

The docks gave way to shabby stores and high walls which again shadowed the changeling. Through the gate in the walls, Neva found a path to the shore. At the edge of the city, with plantations stretching out on the left, and the storm wracked city on the right, and the waves in front, Neva heard the whispers and despaired. The whispers bade Neva to step out into the water, and tread out to her doom.

The sea lapped the rocks before her, out, across the shallows Neva could see the sharp 'Teeth of Shargon', jagged rocky islets which posed all manor of hazard to sailing ships. Beyond that, the storm clouds that carried the next bout of rain grew closer and darker.

Past the breakers Neva saw a lone barge painfully rowing against the tide.

Neva was happy to be on solid ground once more. Traveling by sea had been a wonder only for a brief few days before boredom set in and it was hard for even a changeling not to stand out. That left her only Thax'll'sys'vyrdra for company and that old grouch's thoughts kept coming unbidden day and night. Conversing with it was hard, its thoughts fractured and alien. Despite her finally understanding the voice at last, much of what it said was strange or unintelligible to her. It was impatient, yearning for release and even though it understood that Neva was moving closer by the day its impatience gave form to thoughts urging her on.

Stormreach had been quaint. A modest little place, the decrepit state familiar to her own home, as were the overhead pathways. The open sky was not though and the sun often made her squint. Still its vibe was quite familiar and Neva quickly felt the social currents as only a changeling could. Every face told a story and together she felt the undercurrent of the place. The floating houses hardly drew her attention, so used was she to the floating spires of Sharn. In many ways Stormreach made her think someone had made a small scale model of her home and that was a funny thought. She would smirk all the more if Thax'll'sys'vyrdra wasn't incessantly urging her on with every step. She felt drawn in a direction of its choosing. Could it lead her straight to it, she wondered?

The tugging thoughts in her mind took her through alleys and docks to end up on the shores once more. The sea blocked her path and she wondered what Thax'll'sys'vyrdra wanted of her. Then she noticed the barge. Was there something on it the dragon desired?

What is it Thax? Something on that ship? I thought you wanted me to get deep into the mainland to find you.

Sometimes the whispers seemed clear; right now they were unhelpful and annoying, like the sounds that came through a speakerstone when no-one from House Sivis was there to operate them properly. The view was scenic, the dark grey-blues of the approaching storm; the oranges and reds streaming between the dark purple shadows of the Teeth. Something was out in the bay besides the barge. sending plumes of water high into the air. The barge was attempting to flee it.

There was nothing to be done at this distance, than to watch.

Slowly the something closed on the barge, then there was a 'crack'; it sounded like a pistol-shot, but it was the sound of the boat's hull being shattered into flinders. Neva could see the pale flukes moving and then there was only the slowly sinking wreck of the barge.

The whispers seemed to pause, then resumed with an intensity. The barge was gone, the thing that had wrecked it, gone as well. But something was moving out in the water.

Struggling.

Neva stood watching powerless for a few moments. She might be a rogue, but she wasn't heartless. She was just utterly unable to do something about their predicament, try as she might thinking of a solution. She couldn't swim, she had no ship, and even if she did, she couldn't sail it anyhow. finally she figured that the only thing she could do was go and get help. The folk of Stormreach weren't the most generous bunch, but maybe they might be willing enough to help out their fellow man. With that thought in mind she rushed back to the city, to the docks and the boats moored there, shouting at the sailors and whatever officer she could see that a barge had sunk and that there were people in the water, pointing in the direction of the wreck.

The docks were a portrait in disregard. The only fisherman who appeared to hear Neva, scurried away even faster as a result. The rest ducked their heads into their work, and muttered even louder about the day's woes. The Guardsmen pair reacted, but not in any way that was helpful; one laughed, while the other glared at the interruption. He turned back to the dockman he was extorting from.

A rowboat clunked next to Neva's foot, the bit of rope tying it to the dock.

Well, that was quite disappointing but far, far from unexpected. She knew these sorts of people. Either their own misery was too deep to care for a stranger or they simply chose not to because they would not become better off because of it.

She supposed that was it then. She looked at the rowboat tempting her, but what could she do?  Steal a rowboat? Go out there on the open sea? All she'd accomplish was drown herself.

But she had been drawn to it. To that barge. The ancient power of Thax'll'sys'vyrdra pointed out its plight for whatever reason it might have. She had to try something. She had to be smart, not stupid or impulsive. She needed a captain of one of the smaller ships, a fisherman's boat or something. Quickly she looked around for a candidate..

The whispers grew in intensity and volume. There did not appear to be any 'captains' about. Fishermen charged with cleaning up, or gutting the fish were scattered about, but as Neva approached them they found someplace else to be.

The angry guard, having finished his business, was approaching Neva, followed by the other.

Well, with both Thax and surly guards urging her on, who was Neva to resist lending this unwatched rowboat? She quickly undid the mooring and stepped in with more wobbling then she might have liked but quickly sat down, grabbed an oar and pushed off from the dock to stay out of the guard' reach. Then she began rowing, or what passed for rowing from a Undercity girl who had never seen more water then in a bathtub before she got on a boat to Stormreach. She hoped she could get out to the shipwreck. More importantly, she hoped she could make it back to shore..

The boat would have been easier to row if it would only keep still. It seemed that each time Neva moved right the boat moved left. Neva got it untied, and away from dock before the guards even reached the end of the pier. Neva learned not to move too quickly when she almost lost an oar. Two oars seemed better, and she controlled herself until they were safely in her hands and the water.

Then it was just a matter of moving the oars, forward, back, one arm, the next. The next. The next.

Behind her Neva saw the guards had gone to one of the fishermen for another shakedown.

Neva had seen the barge sink. But someone was swimming towards the rowboat. The progress was painfully slow.

The guards had climbed aboard another rowboat. The one with the oars faced away from her. The other, angry-looking one, sat in the rear of the boat. It looked like the one rowing was gaining on Neva.

Ahead, Neva could make out two figures in the water, laboriously paddling as well, toward her boat.

The two swimmers made their way slowly to the rowboat, as Neva continued to bring it laboriously closer to them. She reversed her seat, to full harder on the oars, and found it easier to watch the guards recede, than the swimmers to approach.

The delirious man continued to sing unhelpfully as the changeling and the githyanki pushed and pulled him aboard the dinghy. He lay in an uncomfortable-looking position on the boards at the bottom of the boat, crooning.

His hair was braided and decorated with beads, and his long ears were pierced with numerous rings. She switched places with the Githyanki with all the grace of a of a drunk bear on a tightrope as the boat uncomfortably rocked this way and that in the waves before she could flop down on the opposite seat. It was true, very few changelings went about undisguised, many adopting a mask or several among those who were not of their kind. Not Neva though, she wore her own face as a badge of pride. Most of the time, that is.

"Can't say I've seen many of your kind either, while we're on the subject. Where are you from?"
Neva did not look disturbed. As someone who can take on any appearance she is probably the last to judge someone for looking weird. Perhaps this fellow was a native of this continent? Neva knew almost nothing about the people of Xen'drik. This fellow might just make a useful local guide. He sure owed her a favor..

If you truly have seen githyanki, then I must insist that you tell me where. But I think you have not.... I have not for over five years." Definitely an odd fellow, Neva decided. He certainly didn't seem familiar to her even if she was to him somehow. But he's from the Etherial? Sounds odd, not a place she knew. Perhaps it was a magic place, that would explain why his kind didn't show up much.
"I can't say I have seen any of your kind. At least I think not. I'm from Sharn, biggest city around, and you see all sorts of odd stuff there."

As the boat beached and Arath took up his wounded companion she looked around. She had no experience sleeping out in the open so her first thought was getting back to civilization.
"Let's head to Stormreach. Your friend there probably can use a bed and perhaps someone who knows how to fix him up."

The githyanki gazed hard at Neva as she spoke. "I believe you have not seen my kind before." and he relaxed. "I have not seen Sharn. Stormreach has seemed... beyond me. I thought to study the materiel where it was smoother, but I have only learned that no matter how great a distance one falls, there is always further one can go. You shall be my guide in the city of storms, and I shall be... What shall I be? Would you have a fist, or a sword? I think you already have the eye. Take us to a place of fixing, and then we will see what rules can be discovered."

The way was clear, along the beach and then to docks. As they moved they drew closer to the cliffs that overlooked the city, and the Emperor who perched at the top. Arath, having said his piece, kept silent as the statue above them. Ahead a splooshjng and splashing came from a tangle of mammoth pipes. Half of them were dumping into the water the contents of the bowels of the city. Arath spat disgustedly as the smell reached them, and then reached into their nostrils. Neva felt as though even here at this distance, that the smell could possibly embed itself in her clothes and even her skin. Perhaps it was reasonable to never want to get near a city such as Stormreach.

Re: 1: Still Waters Run Deep
Neva had to turn over Arath's words a few times in her head, but she figured the odd bugger was saying he owed her and was content to let her be in charge just now. That was fine. In the city she was probably better grounded anyhow. Why, even the smell of sewage reminded her of home. The undercity of Sharn was quite renowned for its rich bouquet of flavors of whatever was thrown down from above and then left to rot. Still, sewage being sewage, this was a new low. Thankfully there was an ocean nearby to wash should it become required. But first things came first, finding an inn and whatever passed for a alley surgeon around here. As long as they both existed, which there was a fair chance they did, then Neva was confident she could find them, strange city or not. She cheerfully piped up with a confident voice laden with undercity dialect.

"Doncha worry, I'll get us settled soon enough. We can figure out the rest from there. You'll see."

Arath, for all his oddness, did seem like a useful fellow. He could handle himself, Neva could judge that by looking at a man. One didn't become captain without some smarts and skills and if the stories were true, the seas were no safe place. He was also very, very outlandish. Was this what Thax wanted her to find? Its voice was silent ever since she resolved to go help. Did that old slithering thing see an opportunity here? Tasted the threads of fate that would put Arath on her path? If so, she had to give it to her constant companion. Arath and maybe his friend could make the beginnings of a band of people she could use to fulfill her goals. Maybe.

But that was for later. Stormreach awaited.

Captain Arath
Arath trudged on awhile, actively looking about; every 'sploosh' a sudden focus for his attention, though he bore a man over his shoulders. He looked around. He scanned the sky, shielding his eyes from the light of the Sword. "This place is accursed. One cannot see the stars!" It was true; the light of the Sword drowned the faint light of the stars, the moons... the clouds did the same for the rest of the sky. It looked as though the universe had closed it's eyes on the world.
Then his eyes lit on the Falconer's Spire, and Neva recognized on Arath's alien face a familiar look; a look of pure desire. "With such a ship I could leave this place."

The airship, docked so far up and yet not so far behind Neva as she wanted. The whispers began again, tentative, as yet saying nothing, a prelude perhaps--

"Do you hear that?" Arath broke in, and at first Neva though the Captain meant that he heard Thax'll'sys'vyrdra. But no, there was another sound in the splashing of offal. A clicking and chittering....

"There...." the gith turned and looked at a mound of discharge they had just passed. It's surface shifted in the Sword-light; moved... broke apart in a multitude of shapes. "Giant centipedes...." Arath said, as they moved towards the trio, whispering 'tsk-tsk-tsk' like a master to a recalcitrant child.

Stars had been a peculiar oddity when Neva had first seen them aboard the ship that bore her to Stormreach. In the undercity of Sharn one did not get to see them, nor did they appear on the upper spires, with light and smog blurring them out. That one could acutely miss them was strange, like much about Arath. Then again, Neva did feel slightly exposed without a ceiling overhead.

She felt a whole lot more exposed with deadly critters coming for them. Oh, but Neva hated bugs. Especially the many-legged variety. She had no wish to confront the things.
"Hurry."

With a whisper her sword left its sheath, a sword of dull metal that did not reflect any light. She took the shield from her back as well. As Arath struggled with the wounded man she backpedaled with him. Under her breath she spoke in a language she did not understand yet came instinctively to her; the language of dragons, who shape magic by their wills. Shadows gathered to her and covered her, trickling from her like smoke.

Neva draws her pact blade and shield and casts Armor of Agathys, gaining 10 temporary hp and damaging anything that reduces these THP for 10 cold damage.

Arath was already in motion, though encumbered with the unconscious man. "Do not fall, Neva Borne, I cannot carry two. That way leads up, and away from the filth" his footsteps splashed off towards a staircase ahead.

The bulk of the centipede mass were still a distance away, but those few closest to Neva were coming within reach.

The closest centipede made an attempt to nip at Neva, bodily launching itself from the slime in an attempt to fasten its fangs into her skin.

If you use an attack action and move then 1-4 additional centipedes will come within reach.
Arath's move speed means that 1-3 centipedes will come within reach of him every turn.

Neva slew the centipedes closes to her while matching the githyanki's speed over the squelching ground. No more were they picking their steps with care, and the resulting muck splatters would make any clothes washer despair. But as the alternative was to be fodder for vermin... Two of the vermin attempted to get at Arath, the slower pace of the laden captain making him two juicy targets and more appealing to the swarm. Neva killed one of these.

The remaining centipedes flung themselves at the two; one attacked Arath, but missed, Neva kicked one away, but one landed on her magically armored shoulder and sunk it's fangs into the armor. It froze solid and dropped away, but not before delivering a nasty bite.

"EEEEGH!" Neva exclaimed as the filthy creature bit her. She was shivering all over from the creature's filthy skittering touch. Thankfully her spell had killed it off immediately, but it would soon be overwhelmed. A dark thought was forming in her mind, but for now she desperately tried to hold on to the plan. She cut the critter chasing Arath in two and turned back to cleave apart the next centipede to reach her, but the mass would not be dissuaded yet..

Giant Centipedes
One more centipede approached Neva, three more centipedes approached Arath.
The swarm was learning. Neva slew the two that were within reach, but missed the three that skirted around her reach and went after Arath and Scratch.

No centipede was currently within reach of Neva, but four were near Arath. The vermin leapt. One fastened onto the meat of his left calf, eliciting a cry of pain, but he shook it off and kept running.
OOC: Centipedes hp id 4, AC 13, Bite: +4 1d4+2 & poison (Con save 11 or 3d6)

Captain Arath
"This reminds me ov a joke..." Arath gasped out. "Two men are surprised by an umber hulk. One takes off running as fast as he can. Ahhh!" the centipedes scrambled towards them. "You can't outrun an umber hulk! Ha!  Ehhh. And the other one says 'I don't need to; I just have to run faster than you!' Almost there, arschloch, that stings!"

The stairs were 40 feet away.

Neva said nothing. That joke was very close to a dark thought she just was having. But they were so very close now. All she needed to do is let Arath make those last few steps. her sword flashed out at the centipedes going for him. She still had her spell. So close now...

Giant Centipedes
Three more centipedes approached Neva, one more centipede approached Arath.
The three centipedes harried Neva and her hex blade slashed and there were only two, but five were near Arath now. The centipedes skittered, hissing.

OOC: Centipedes hp id 4, AC 13, Bite: +4 1d4+2 & poison (Con save 11 or 3d6)

Captain Arath
His yelps were incoherent now: "Scheiße, scheiße, scheiße!" The centipedes harried the gith right up to the pool of light that surrounded to bottom of the stairway. Then one launched itself like an arrow and struck him in the small of his back . He howled in pain and stumbled forward, Mr. Scratch falling into the sand and muck in front of Arath. Neva slashed the creature, but its head was buried into Arath's flesh until she kicked it free. The poison squirted harmlessly into the sand.

They were at the stairs, The lights around the walkway were not bright, but they were brighter than the centipedes preferred, and the mass turned away.

He sat up slowly, spitting sand. "I ... need ... a drink"

Re: 1: Still Waters Run Deep
"You and me both." Neva breathed while looking at the departing mass. So many legs and how they skittered...
"That was... disgusting. I might be sick."

With distaste she looked at her sword, dirtied as it was and quickly wiped it before sheathing it. Neva looked at mr. Scratch with a heaving sigh.
"That feller doesn't know half how lucky he is. You good to go? I want to get into that bloody cesspit of a city."

Captain Arath
"Ja? Well, don't be sick on me." He rose to his feet, and made a half-hearted attempt at brushing off the filth that covered him before abandoning that altogether. "Cesspit, indeed, we go where we belong." He picked up the still snoring Scratch, put him over his shoulders again and then began the ascent. At the top of the stairway the dock stretched out before them, quiet now save for two large craft docking at the far end. They passed warehouses and ships at anchor, and then, about half-way along the docks Neva spied a tavern sign: 'The Leaky Dinghy.' "Any port in a storm." agreed Arath, when she gestured. "I dislike the name, though."
