Gaming the Draconic Prophecy
Doriah d'Hevian:
Gaming the [Draconic] prophecy sounds mysterious. What do you mean by that then?

So I was thinking about the prophesy, and how it seems to be just... really weird stuff.

Like the Illuminati, or adding up the numerical values of letters to get a mysterious sum that is used to predict something else.

It's arbitrary-seeming, and also other-worldly like the Zodiac or astrology.

It seems kind of meta to Eberron; magnets moving things from behind a screen that is the world.

And I was also thinking about how I like to slip in little tidbits of popular culture, and knowledge and little details about things that I like.

And I was wondering if the players noticed them.

I was wondering if the players noticed them all*.

And so, those two thoughts bumped into each other...

Proposal:
You know...

All this talk about draconic prophesy has gotten me thinking.

I'd like to try out a mini game. Along with the regular role play, I'd like to have a scavenger hunt (of sorts) to simulate the Draconic Prophesy.

The Prophesy is a meta-representation of the game world. The real world is meta to the game.

Some of my posts have details or allusions, photos, quotes, etc. from the real world. Just as alien to the game world as the Prophesy. The one could be thought of as an analog of the other.

If you find, and recognize these meta-elements, we can say that's like coming to an understanding of the Prophesy.

Each post with meta-elements counts as one discovery. List the post along with your observations, and if it's correct it will get added to the discoveries.

When the players reach 100 discoveries, a reward will be revealed.

 I'll give you this one:

Suppose I was a player, and I read this post:
quote:
Becalmed in Stormreach: # 84:  link to a message in this game

Ser Papathanassiou is talking, and being flowery, and then he says 'tubular bell' out of nowhere*. So what's the deal with Tubular Bells? We look and see it is a song by Vangelis. Who is Vangelis? He is a musician and his full name is Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou. And we look at the picture of Ser Papathanassiou, and said 'hmm'. That is Vangelis!

*suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconsciousness.

But, you already knew all of that, right?

(And then we spend the rest of the afternoon listening to the soundtrack of Blade Runner, and thinking about replicants, and the similarities and differences between them and warforged....)

Posting such ruminations in this thread  along with a link as above will score that post.
Also any post I make with modern lyrics, callbacks to characters in movies, just... whatever. I'll evaluate and include the accumulating list. And when you get to (arbitrary here) 100 then I will make some benefits available to the whole party.

Although there may be more than one such metagame element in the post, the post is scored when the first note of the post is made.
And so while someone else might notice that Rodrigo Guillermo bears a passing resemblance to Jon Anderson of "Yes" who recorded with Vangelis, they cannot score that post again.

It's not a competition per se, the party is awarded the benefit, and a player that did the heavy lifting gets bragging rights.

Also please note that I am not going to score anything from a player post; I do not want these threads to devolve into a Monty Python sketch!

*Along with wondering if the players notice my tidbits, I thought about if they put any of their own in... and that looking for them I've missed some connections!

GM EDIT: Instead of quoting the post, do this:

Heart of Darkness #22: link to a message in this game
So would the Tulita culture being inspired by Hawaiian/Polynesian culture count?

It clicked when I read kahuna after that I pronounced hau'li correctly and bust out laughing.

GM evaluation: You are correct, the culture and societal issues are adapted from Hawaiian/Polynesian culture; while this is not a strong representation of a discovery, it is certainly a discovery.

Note: while the influences are present in many other posts, they cannot be 'tagged in', as this discovery has been made.

Calvus' logic --Live Long and Prosper-- a nod to Spock?
GM: a logical assumption.

Re: Gaming the Draconic Prophecy

Well I already mentioned this to the DM in a PM awhile ago and got inspiration for it, But Rand having the portrait of Sean Bean obviously does not bode well for this particular NPC. His portrait first appears in message 15 in the "Borne on Dragon's Breath" Thread.

GM: Oh so you admit that you are double-dipping? Fine, as this falls under the `Foreign Actors category, I grant it to you.

'Sean Bean Dies at the End'.

A character named Akamai had me raising an eyebrow.

Msg #22

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akamai_Technologies

*Wonders if there's some technically-inspired element of prophecy at work*

A stormship flies through the 'clouds'?

Edit: Sorry, no connection there. The prophesy here is false.

Way to think outside the box, though!

Re: Gaming the Draconic Prophecy
Akamai also has a gaming division where they deliver infrastructure to publishers. One of the games they play a part in providing infrastructure for is Fortnite.

But already debunked as false before we see a big cube dropping from the sky. ^^

GM Edit:
Hmmm. Well, let me consider this. It is possible there was some subconscious connection. I'll meditate on it.

Commander Gregory Bonedeuce. …tricks with cards or coin.
Doubtful, but, it made me think of this (different spelling): https://www.discogs.com/Danny-...Lady/release/1687341
*wonders if Gregory has red hair*

GM EDIT: Sorry, no dice. Sometimes there is something in a name, sometimes not.

Is Rand Thorn a reference to Rand al'Thor?
GM EDIT: No, sorry. LotR, not WoT, because capricious fate.

Re: Gaming the Draconic Prophecy
One does not simply make a Lord of the Rings reference, especially when the actor who said those lines image is used for the NPC that makes the reference... Oh wait you totally can and did. Rand's reply to Neva, message 35 in the "Three Sheets to the Wind" thread.

GM: Guilty, as charged. We begin to see a pattern. Another film Sean doesn't survive.

Elminster. Chosen, The Sage of Shadowdale, The Great Oversorcerer and Doombringer of Mystra.
GM Edit: Yes. Kind of a common name, nowadays.

Edit: and Montgomery might be a reference to Bernard Montgomery, the British WW2 field marshal.
Nope. But I'm glad you are studying history!

Re: Gaming the Draconic Prophecy
As far as tidbits of popular culture go, 'even death may die' is a reference to:

"That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die."

It's from H.P. Lovecraft and said to have been a quote from the Necronomicon.

Pointing it out might've been unnecessary but *shrugs*. :)

GM ANSWER: Yes! Nothing is unnecessary, Everything is valid. Points must be Scored.

Now can you say why I chose that phrase?

Re: Gaming the Draconic Prophecy
If we're going with literary references in thread titles...

"the embers that still burn" refers to a lament written by Henry Longfellow in 1875 after the death of three of his close friends. The first page of that thread refers to Zalen Trafalgar's regret at... something?... the Silver Flame did to stop the spread of lycanthropy? Perhaps he laments the loss of life of loved ones as Longfellow did?

"The Heart of Darkness" is a Joseph Conrad novel about a boat trip up an African river to an ivory camp where the company manager has abandoned civilization for barbarism.

Gotta admit, Romantic poetry qualified as "popular culture" raises my eyebrow a bit. :-)

Re: Gaming the Draconic Prophecy
You're not far wrong.

I started this game with the Stormreach book, and the Razorcoast book and a patient friend. Now I have several patient friends, and a new and clear plot arc which is ... quite large.

It involves several dreams that I've had, and some quite old (like during my first stint at University old) which have informed my plot.

I have a hold on Saggan Necrooman: who he is and what he does. That's new for me. I dreamed him twenty years ago, and now I know what he is, what he looks like, and why he holds both promise and tragedy.

I know what secret lurks beneath Stormreach (beyond the sewers and the Roachlord)

I have stories now that carry Stormreach: The Razor Coast far past the confines of the Night of the Shark and the Dawn of the Kraken. If you choose to follow with me we shall explore all the details (those that survive, I should say).

This is one year; year one, since I said 'Here, I have an Idea', and that call was answered.

Some folks celebrate a rebirth, some celebrate a new freedom; I celebrate the creation of a new story.

Some have come, and gone. It's not easy dealing with me. I have ... foibles, and weaknesses. I'm not entirely professional. But I do now that when the muse is with me this is some of the best fun I can have.

Thank you, all, for helping me. To have fun, and make a story.

It sounds cool, and it may be relevant.
