I'm an old RP partner of the GM's and we co-GMed a couple of games years ago. :)

I haven't roleplayed much on RPOL in quite some time (I'm just in one game that's inactive) but I thought I'd drop in and have a read for now.

It's like one of those murder mysteries, when the detective finds out that all of the suspects actually knew each other from long ago.

I forgot I had to do that. I keep assuming these things run themselves!

I've got enough players for now; I don't want to be overwhelmed. For the new, just watch Tremor's thread to get a feel for things.

Right now I'm getting accustomed to the skills system, so I'll likely ask for more rolls than strictly needed. If you make a throw when you post your original action then I will take that into account in my response.

Hi all am up to date on the only game thread so far.

I need my name fixed, now it is listing my background. Will be using the name Chance.

I will be playing a non standard class, with th DM's permission. Think of me as a fighter/ rogue hybred. Am new to this setting buy very familiar with the game system.

Am open to having a back connection to anyone, I have travelled with a troupe of what most would consider gypsies. For the last two years have been on my own working my way here doing whatever odd jobs and cons I could work to my advantage. Am a very skilled smuggler.

OK, so I did not roll 2 rolls, which I will do in the future, misread above, however, a 3 still falls in line with losing a little bit of coin.

Tremor just did something in his post that I want to hold up as a great example of how to handle unknowns in play.

He doesn't know if he can find/follow/stop Capshaw from running out into the night. He doesn't even know the DC, so what does he do?

He rolled appropriately and gave me two sets of prose; one if he succeeds, and one if he failed.

I can edit his post to reveal the relevant actions. Cool.

Hope to keep you laughing then, am a very charismatic socially skilled character. Can fight but only with simple weapons. S o will be a lover type of character fighting when I have too. Once I level up some will multi class in either a martial one or rogue.

Going to have fun trying this class out. Should be fun in a bar, playing dice for drinks. Rolling a coin or two over my fingers etc making them dance. All the while telling a story and with my free hand emptying their purse or replacing real coins with slugs. Lots of cons and quick talking trouble, this guy will be capable of.

Okay we've had our first two GM-LOLs and so I'm announcing a new policy, metagaming be damned: Make the GM laugh, giggle, snerk, snort, or gasp and your character gets an immediate Inspiration awarded (if you already have Inspiration, then gain a Hero point)

Jack:
"Release the mutton! "

Tremor Enkau Valevine:
If this meant going into the sewer, hard soled boots might help, a blistering pox of blackened sorcerous Khyber leeches upon the thing that would make plunging his soft boots into...

< cascade of images of bowel movements from Giants to Gnolls >

Inspirations awarded: Jack and Tremor Add 'Inspiration' near your Hero Points section of the character sheet. Use Inspiration as a Hero point, or trade it to another character.

Thanks it wasn't planned but something I have made myself with jerky instead of Tack.

Shaved and cut the jerky into pieces put it in boiling water to create a broth and added whatever was at hand.

If it was intentional would of said something like Making hard Tack soup, as he cuts up an old leather saddle. Dropping it into the boiling water to soften up, the dried horse sweat is a bonus to offer up a unique spice for these lousy wharf rats who have tried to kidnap me.

Some 'meta' info about the game

I wish I could take all the credit...

But this campaign is the fusion of two resources: the D&D 3.5 Stormreach book for Eberron, and the Razor Coast module. Putting them together is weirdly easy, and there seems to be a nice synergy in the settings.

Theme Music
This is my pick for theme music for Tremor's thread Becalmed in Stormreach;
right click to open in another tab, then click play, then read the adventure.

Most of the time we can link to youtube for themesongs , but sometimes the song is not available on you tube.

But if you host it on Drive then we can link to that.

A word on craft:

I may not answer your posts immediately. What I do is try to think about what is going on, what is coming up, and try to find something interesting to happen next.

For example, I did not know who it was that had fallen overboard until yesterday.

I also require input from the players as we progress, which is why most of the time I will have your character asked to make a decision at the end of my posts.

Also as a heads up I'll be wrapping the individual intros and having the group meet.

Whether you split the party after that is up to you.

Do we need a thread for tracking HP Hero points and Inspiration?

Also, I feel entitled to ask players to sometimes come up with a story and tell it in character. Do you think that's fair? I just want to know if there's a level of expectation that could put off players.

Same here. I keep track of Hero points and Inspiration on the character sheet.

Also, I'm okay with the request for character storytelling. I mean, there are so many ways a person could go about that, from being lousy at telling (which could be humorous and fun) to being bard-like at the task. Which is to say that expecting (or requesting) a story isn't necessarily the same as expecting a brilliant storyteller. ;)

It's all in good fun.

Frankly the attenpt is all I require. This is a game, Not a dissertation.

That said a good try will bring good things.

Oh, and we may be having a new player soon.

Telling a story in character? I think it could be fair; especially if it doesn't have to be long. Does it have to be interactive? like Rping telling a story while we're at a tavern or something? Or do we just straight up write a story in a thread for others to read?

Not long; see #33 link to a message in this game
Uldrik Mroranon:

You could totally to that, or sing them a ballad, or something.
Uldrik Mroranon:
Or do we just straight up write a story in a thread for others to read?
It's meant as an opportunity to express yourself, and/or your character. 'Red' Reddington emphasizes the point he makes with story, or you can add background.

Chance stopped posting after he was asked for a story. Honestly any yarn would have done. But you can't make people do what they don't want to.

So, with regard to that:
If at any time any of you have an issue with the storyline, the characters, or the direction the adventure takes, then please let me know. By and large you are all the ones calling the shots of the plot, but sometimes we can go somewhere that we didn't want to.

Also, this came up:
The GM:
quote:
The GM, Re: 0: Character Generation:
You can use a Hero Point to add a d6 after a d20 roll, as a bonus. You can also spend a Hero Point to get advantage before a d20 roll.
So this "advantage" ^above^ is the same as the "Advantage" below?
GM, 0: D&D 5e Rules notes, questions, clarifications:
Advantage: Roll two d20 and take the highest.
A: yes. Whenever I write Advantage I mean the game mechanic: roll 2 d20 and take the highest. (Even if I write advantage uncapped and without italics)
quote:
And when you gave this option:
The GM, Re: 1: A bone to pick:
You must also decide if:
  • Falken Helps you, giving you Advantage in your roll.
That meant that I could have rolled 2d20 and taken the highest roll?
Instead of spending a Hero Point to add a d6, which, in retrospect, looks like I traded a dozen doughnuts for one. But, I'm learning. :)
A: You had a lot of choices.
In thinking about how to explain this I have found that while clear in my mind; it's complicated to explain.
You can gain Advantage in this situation in several ways:
  • Someone Helps you
  • You spend a Hero point before the roll (you have a set number and earn them as we play)
  • You use your Inspiration before the roll (that's the GM award)

If both you and Falken roll separately and both beat the serpent's roll then you get two successes
If Falken Helps you you get Advantage. If you succeed with Advantage that counts as one success.
If Falken Helped, then If Olaus beats your roll then Olaus gets a success.
otherwise If Olaus beats both your rolls then Olaus gets a success.

If you had Inspiration (I have awarded a few) then we should say you used that instead of a Hero Point. The difference between Inspiration and Hero Points is that you can gift Inspiration to another character, instead of only using it yourself.
quote:
The GM, Re: 1: A bone to pick:
Get three successes before the serpent does. You have one success.
So, I need two more successes before the serpent achieves three?
What constitutes a success? Whoever rolls the highest? As in, my TN would be whatever is higher than Olaus' roll. ...Which, I won't know until after you've rolled for the serpent.

For a contest like this the person who rolls the highest is the winner. The winner gets to change the situation. If the roll is a tie, then no-one won, and no-one gets to change the situation.
For example, If a snake grabbed you, then your contest would presumably be to break free. You can only do that by beating the snake's roll, and not by tying it.

So for this pursuit you have to beat the serpent's roll, three times. And you have done so once.

If you chose to go through the teeth then I would have set a static DC to roll against.

As it is, go ahead and make your roll at the end of your post, indicating if Falken Helped or not.
In my response I'll roll for Falken if he did not Help and I'll roll Olaus and narrate what happened.

Lastly, can I have your permission to pu this into a public thread to illustrate these? It might help someone else too.

After I posted 'Nothing At All' I was exhausted, and so I didn't think about the 'Dr. Girlfriend' effect that contrasting a male voice with the female singer.

Internally, I remap the songs' voice to someone like Diana Krall.

I found a cover, but kept the original for completeness' sake.

Re: OOC discussions, commentary, and suggestions
On another topic,

Speculation has arisen that I am not only me, but that I am someone else as well. While I appreciate the compliment, I am not in possession of sufficient creativity to accomplish this.

I am The GM, and all of my posts have that name. I reserve the right to also post as The Shark occasionally, or any of the other NPCs, in OOC, because they, too, can get out of character.

The players listed in the cast are real people, with real imaginations, and they are universes beyond my own. Respect is deserved to each.

That is not to say I do not go meta from time to time. You will find (I hope) the cultural references that I sprinkle to inform the 'feel' of the game. You will not object (I hope) to the media links I place in media res of our adventure. Description, Metaphor, Simile, and Allusion are my tools, and they all depend on what you and I together, know.

But to reiterate what I said privately: I started this game to run a personal adventure for a friend; now it is for a few friends more, but it's still for you.

The player's input is critical for my inspiration, without you guys, I get stuck. So, barring a psychotic break, I rely on all of you to post for yourselves.

If you see something...

quote:
[ Private to GM: is there something I'm missing about black vs. grey skinned sharks? You've made a point about the shark's color 3 times, but I'm unfamiliar with anything related to that from Eberron lore?]

Say something.

And, preferably in character.

It's ok to not know stuff about Eberron (I think Tremor exceeds my knowledge, but I consider myself pretty expert) I know you don't know it all. So do most of the characters in Eberron. As in the real world there's a bunch of things we do not know. And here on the edge, in Stormreach, there's even more. I'm combining two source materials, Stormreach and Razor Coast. Local knowledge is held by locals. So: ask around. If you think theres a mystery, then roll the dice and tell me the skill you are attempting. Ask NPCs. If they don't know they will at least guide you in a  direction. Or not, but the interaction will not go unnoticed.

So: you noticed that the sharks color was mentioned, eh? Do they correlate? If not, is there a reason one report is off?

Take Inspiration for asking the question. But you still need to find an answer.

I've opened Heart of Darkness to our last three PCs.

I had to rewrite it a few times, so feel free to add questions in OOC to elaborate on what is going on. I may have left some things out inadvertently (I know I left some things out on purpose).

Also this is the Devourer: http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/The_Devourer
One of the dark six, and probably one of the more commonly sacrificed to  in this area.
See also Traveler http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/The_Traveler

Of course that's just how mainland Khorvaire sees them, maybe here they are considered good deities.

So that new players know I have a rule about awarding Inspiration which acts like an extra Hero Die that you could use, or give away whenever you make me laugh out loud.

To show that I am capricious as well as benevolent, I am also going to award Inspiration when I am struck dumb with awe.

Inspiration for Tremor's discourse on death.

It may take me a while to come up with what is going on inside Tap, so that I can then have him say... very little.

It's an unsolved mystery to me how to handle missing players, but we are not moving fast enough to warrant any worry about what to do with a 'quiet time.'

I wanted to say that when it comes to knowlege that you have you can always ask if the character knows something. you all have backgrounds and skills that give broad strokes, but putting a detail into your origin story or in one of my questions can sometimes be as effective as putting it on the character sheet.

Btw, (for anyone interacting with Doriah in the story), you should know I'm going to be travelling (me, not my character). I've got to fly out to Australia in a little over a week and it's basically going to take me 2-3 days to get where I'm going, including the night's stopover along the way. I'm going to be my mother's carer as she's going in for surgery the day after I arrive, so between traveling, jetlag, and the surgery, there may be a gap in my posting.

So for my free magic item I picked a ring of jumping. If I stack it with my Step of the Wind Ki ability it'll multiply my jump distance by 6. I meant to ask but didn't think it'd be relative this soon. I just wanted to make sure multiplying the bonus is kosher with the DM before suggesting it in character.

I would say yes, with the following provisos : Enhanced jumping does not actually enhance your movement, just the distance you are allowed to 'jump'. Your str is 10 and that means 60' and that is less than your dash move, so I will accept that.

Also I think by fiat this should be a spring-like component Harvester wears on his ankles. Just for my own comfort.

So, I get to have advantage on a roll against you? Hmm....

I have still not gotten through the Wayfinder's guide to Eberron, but I wanted to throw this out:

Do you have any regrets?

Your character, I mean. If you have not put a regret into your character background or character sheet, think of one now.

Every good character has one; every good GM needs one.

While he noticed before, as he entered, Tremor took the pause to look again at the stones beneath his feet, and find the tracings or the shimmering iron in between the mason rock of the floor. There was design there, and while it was not difficult to guess the whole design, the odd segment of iron that did show, the Halfling was sure the metal was Flametouched Iron.

I gave you a rug. There might be more! :D Set dressing (describing a scene) has always been difficult for me. I can see what's there in my imagination, lots of things ...but putting it into words that don't sound like a grocery list, is another thing. As a GM, I often have to work at it (research and rewrites, galore). As a PC, I truly appreciate having the scene set for me. It's like recess!

Re: Aaaand we are off!
Regarding the Borne on Dragon's Breath thread:
The GM:
If you start at post #1 it is the ship's journey. All of the PCs that were aboard have dropped the game, so don't spend too much attention to them.

It's just for your information. The Stormship Balinor's Breath is the craft that brought you to Stormreach, and without a doubt you arrive safely. This is an opportunity to bond with two other PC and develop your own character.

Giliwan d'Cannith:
So are we posting as on the ship making our way to Stormreach, or having just arrived, or what?

The first post in Even Death May Die is a 'meanwhile at an undisclosed location' giving one account of the events that set you on your journey. It's related by Harkonnner to 'Lenore' so ... may be unreliable? Your character was there, so you will know the truth. How bravely did Kraal fight, after all? I've left most of the details to you guys.

The second post situates you on the ship, under the deck, hiding from the crew and surviving the voyage. You have not yet arrived.

So this is a chance to introspect a bit: your life has just turned upside down- a beloved friend is dead. Maybe you think she's dead, maybe you caught a glimpse of her leaving Sharn on an airship with Harkonner... up to you.

Rage against Kraal? Speculate on how to recover the Soul Engine? Recall details about your time at Morgrave? All up to you.

I didn't watch it until last year when we bought 1-7 on disc and binged the whole thing. If all of the episodes were being made available at once, I'd grab a 1 month sub to HBO and knock it all out, but as it stands I'll probably wait for this season to be released as well, then buy it and consume it in similar fashion.

Okay, there ya go.

Also, If Giliwan can come back (in short order, as we're coming up on a month with no activity) then he can resume with a recovery in the Enclave. Otherwise... Sivis poisons can be tricky...

And when Hujger resumes posting he will pick up at the Leaky Dinghy (or the Runaground Inn, as preferred).

Welcome Lorelei !

What in the name of Holy Siberys is that character description?

It reads as one part The Great Bard, one part George RR Martin and one part Ursula K. Le Guin.

It is a shot across the bow to all existing character that something wicked this way comes.

I'll just be over there, trying to stay out of the area of effect.

I'm on your side, I swear! You all had unique stuff instead of the usual "Bob is this tall with this hair color and really likes honey in his tea," and trying to make a good impression turned into... Well, that. Those comparisons are pretty amazing compliments, so thank you for that, Tremor. ^_^

I really need to work on mine....

Anyhow, welcome in. I think we have two more hard on your heels, so make yourself at home while I figure out what the heck is going on.

I suspect a thread with your name on it will open up within a week.

You're a pirate, right? I have something for pirates... Left it here somewhere....

I should have a post up tomorrow. I just want to wait until I'm not fading from tiredness so I can do it justice.

Maybe some of us could create character connections where our characters have met before.

It is not always necessary to do justice, however.

I would prefer to see a response within a week. I'll kick after a month, and your PC could suffer a terrible fate. Sad, but true.

If you are stuck, ask a nearby npc. I'll recognise the attempt, and try to see you clear. Ask questions of any npc for ideas. Ask them in private message.

Or if your character is truly confounded, and you want to explore that feeling, do an internal dialog.

I love internal dialog! I very rarely get to see the inside of another person's character.

Just nudge the plot forward, lay pipe for future revelations, or just wing it, knowing that that's how many of my posts are as well!

No pressure (some pressure), post, and have fun!

Oh wow I completely did not expect to choose the enemy myself haha. I wonder if letting the dice roller choose for me is about to screw me over xD

As for doing posts justice, I, for one, wing it for the majority of the time. It's a lot easier to write when you have a fleshed out character and even if you post then read back and are not quite satisfied, there's always the option of editing the post, provided nobody's replied yet. Watching a story develop is just so much fun ^^

You can ask here in ooc, or give me a PM.

As a friend says: 'We must not let "the perfect" become the enemy of "the good".'

Something something good, bad, ugly.

Sorry, all. Real life has been...all too real. I fear any motivation I had for this game is gone (not due to the game or GM or anything), so I will bow out and let those who can and want to participate play instead. My apologies, and thank you for allowing me to play for the time I did.

When I was younger, I had a badge, or pin with an illustration of a character sheet that was burning. It said something like

"Sadistic G.M."

And I'd wear it to conventions when I had a scheduled event.

But more than the character, if you drop off, I want to remind you that the NPCs are really the ones to suffer. When Jack dropped, that meant that Falcon Drango went back to prison, and is once again scheduled for execution. Think of the children!

GM EDIT: It was Sadistic G.M. not 'cruel' How could I forget that?

So that is some; I'll have more soon.

Doriah's got combat brewing so I do not want her slighted, but it requires more logic than I currently have to wage battle. I'll build that post up in a day or two.

I wanted to say I do like Wulfric's posts. I wish there was something I could do... Oh wait! there is! Inspiration is granted for consistent vengeful thoughts.

(I cannot wait 'til he gets to the Lodge.)

Speaking of the 'storm terrible', we have Hurricane (now Storm) Lorenzo making landfall here tomorrow most likely.
