Old Play from PBW

Ashford, in play, 001
on Mon 22 Jan 2018 @ 3:41 AM (PBW Time)    [edit]   [delete]
Characters: Gren

Gren has lived in Ashford his whole life. Growing up in a small town, he knows everyone, and has for the most part, has stayed on the good side of the law. A little trouble in his youth, being drunk and rowdy, as young halflings will. Nothing serious.

Now, he has his own little house, next to his parent's, and works in the local bookstore.

Lately he's been feeling restless and decides to check out the quest board and sees the job to find some old ladies laundry.

"Effing seriously...?" He mutters to himself as he reads the ridiculous quest scrawled on the yellowed parchment. "Screw it." He rips the page down and stuffs it in is pocket.

Gren walks east out of town past the General Store, know it was a bit of a hike to reach Bogs Corner, a dog-leg in the road, routing it around a huge swamp.

Number 45, residence to Mr. Gelman and Mrs. Tilly Marsh, was a tidy little dwelling where the halflings had taken advantage of the rich, loamy soil surrounding the swamp and had, over the years, cultivated a very impressive garden.

The smell of blossoming lilacs bordering the garden mixes with the low scent of rotting vegetation coming from the bubbling water nearby.

Frogs and insects create a monotonous sound that's surprisingly soothing.

A few red faced little halfling children play in the well tended yard surrounding the sides of the mud and waddle home. Various furs hang from stretching frames, where Mr. Marsh is busy scraping them clean.

"Hello!" Gren greets the older man.

"Howdy. 'Spect yer here bout that stupid post the wife put up yesterday. She's in through thar." He pointed to the front door of the little home with a stubby brown finger and went back to scraping the hide.

"Thanks."

Gren poked his head through the door and found Mrs. Marsh stirring a large pot of stew at a well made hearth.

"Ma'am?"

"Well hello! Come in, come in."

She turned back to the large cast-iron pot and continued stirring.

"Are you here about the job?"

"Yes I am, providing it's a serious job. It sounds a little..."

"Petty?"

"Well to be frank, yes. Who would steal your laundry?"

"Someone that needed it worse than me, I expect. What I need you to do is find them, get my laundry back, and bring the culprit to me."

"Oooookay. Is there anything else you can tell me?"

"Yep. There's a trail leading into the swamp, plain as day. There's been more than just clothes missing. A little food here and there, a few pelts from time to time. Things like that."

"Ah." Said Gren, suddenly more interested. "How long has this been happening?"

"Oh, I'd say about a month. Whoever is doing it though, must be a sneaky little bugger. There's almost always someone here..."

"Hmmm... I'll see what I can do."

Gren walked to the back of the little house saying hi to the children and began searching the tidy lawn for the trail Mrs. Marsh had mentioned.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the sense roll I made indicates I failed to find anything of interest. Gren's perception (Per) is 10, and I rolled a 14. In GURPS you are trying to roll under the target stat. So I failed that pretty hard, meaning Gren found nothing.

I'll have to go back and see if Mrs. Marsh is willing to show me exactly where the trail begins so Gren can continue.

Gren walks back into the house and sheepishly asks Mrs. Marsh for assistance.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't find the trail you were talking about, could you show me?"

"Oh dear." She looks at Gren all cock-eyed and ponders just telling him to bugger off.

"I suppose... Are you sure you're up for this?"

"Oh. Ummm... Yes, yes of course I am. Of course." He replies like a complete tool.

The halfling woman led Gren back outside and behind the house exactly where he had been looking two minutes before.

"This here." She points down to an obvious trail between two hedges that led out into the swamp.

"Ooooh. Right, thanks."

Gren bulls through the hedge and stomps off into the marsh and promptly sinks up to his armpits in the muddy bottom of the bog.

"Balls."

He hears giggling behind him and thrashes around until he sees three little faces peeking through the hedge at him. The Marsh children.

"Hey there... you uhhh... mind getting me a rope or something?"

A few minutes later he was once again in the lawn he'd started out at, covered from head to toe in rank muck.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to get some help to complete this job. I seem to have... run amok."

Boo... hiss...

Gren slogged off to wash up. He would grab a pint and swing by Kerrick's house and see what he was up to.

Wouldn't be the first time his sturdy friend helped him out. Gren hoped he would be amenable to going with him to the swamp to solve this mystery.

On his way back through town he stopped to drool over the new gem bikes. He could imagine himself whizzing over the roads and fields in search of adventure...

A broom came down on his muddy head and encouraged him away from the store.

"Git! Git you dirty lil bastard!"

It was the proprietors wife from the General Store. It was only then he realized he had left dirty handprints on the large front window.

Gren got home, stripped and began washing his clothes. He thought back on the day with irritation.

"Sweet Gods I suck at adventuring..." He muttered to himself, emptying and refilling the wash basin for the fifth time.

He got done cleaning up and decided to have a snack, a shot of whiskey and take a nap. Maybe the crazy old gravedigger would know where Kerrick was.

Gren woke up and found his clothes had dried from earlier. It was early evening and he decided he would go and talk to Grisham.

The old dwarf was just finishing weeding around a large headstone towards the front of the cemetery, muttering to himself as Gren walked up.

"Hey pops. What's cookin'?"

"Gren." He answered in his deep gravelly voice. "What kind of mischief are you up to this night?"

"Looking for your grandson actually."

"Haven't seen the lad." Grisham grunts as he straightens up, reaches into his coat, takes a long pull off a flask and hands it to Gren. "Saw him three days ago. Came to help me bury someone."

Gren takes a sip and sinks to knees, sputtering and wheezing.

"Sweet Gods old man. What is this shit?"

"Mmmm. Some of my own brew. Good yeah?"

"Wow... Well, if you see him, let him know I'm looking for him? I took a job and I need his help with it."

"Aye. Night then, I have some things to be about. Take care."

The dwarf shuffles off sipping and chuckling to himself.

Gren totters off, not quite believing he's this blasted from one sip of the old dwarf's moonshine.

He decides to head off to bed, making it there after much tripping and giggling.

He crashes into bed with all his clothes on and is out until morning.

Gren rolls out of bed, hits the floor and groans.

"Fak." He croaks.

Realizing he already dressed, he makes his way out the door and stumbles to the Crusty Codpiece.

"Spicy tomato juice, and some eggs please." He says to the ogrish barmaid, trying not to make eye contact.

"Coming right up." Accompanies a wave of fetid breath.

"Sweet gods..."

He feels better after eating and sees the advertisement in the paper about the puppies for sale and decided to go have a look.

Before heading out to Bogs Corner he stops back at his little house and washes up, feeling even better.

By this time he's feeling back to normal. When he sees the pups he falls in love with a little male, obviously the runt of the litter.

on Thu 25 Jan 2018 @ 6:56 AM (PBW Time)    [edit]   [delete]
OOC: What I want to do here is roll an influence roll against Gren's charisma to see if he can convince her to sell him the runt puppy for less than what she's asking.

The asking cost for the male pups is $275. Gren has no money whatsoever, so he's going to lowball her in a major way and see if she'll take $175.

The next few posts will be me noodling though this mechanic. If anyone knows what they're doing, feel free to give me some pointers, if not... I'll figure it out. Slowly.

on Thu 25 Jan 2018 @ 7:10 AM (PBW Time)    [edit]   [delete]
Ok, I make a mistake, it's not an Influence Roll I need to make, that's for something different.

What I do need to do is make a Reaction Roll. The GM rolls 3d and the higher the roll, the better the reaction the NPC has to the player.

So let's see how it goes.

Gren (Admin) posted... Reaction Roll, Adelia - Gren
on Thu 25 Jan 2018 @ 7:20 AM (PBW Time)    [edit]   [delete]
Here we go...

I rolled an 8...

Gren has the Charisma Advantage, in which if he were an actual player's character, I would award a +1 bonus to the roll making it a 9...

Also, if the player wanted to argue something like "I also have Animal Handling (dogs), and this puppy loves me..."

I would again make a 3d reaction roll for the puppy, and if it was over say... 10, I would award another +1 bonus.

But Gren rolled an 8, so he gets an 8.

So on page 560 of GURPS Campaigns, there is a table stating that a roll of 8 results in "Poor Reaction". In commercial transactions, the merchant offers 75% of asking price. $275 * 0.75 = $206.

So he's actually pretty happy with this. He needs to come up with $206.

He hurries back to town to scrape up some money.

He opens his piggy bank and finds $21.

Gren heads grabs something that resembles food from the kitchen table, and munching contentedly, ambles out the door and heads to his day job: the bookstore.

When he arrives he is greeted with the same singsong phrase he's heard every day for two years.

"Helloooooo Greeeeeeeeeeeen..."

"Good morning Ms. Tilwatter."

The owner and proprietor is a pleasant woman with thick horn rimmed glasses that is so short she could almost be mistaken for a halfling.

Absent minded but sweet, she has been a good friend of Gren's for a long time.

"Where do you want me to start?"

Gren spent his day shelving books and chatting amicably with Tilwatter. He kept pondering his money problems, and what he could have done differently on his first "adventuring" job, other than sink in the muck and walk home smelling of shat.

He hoped he'd hear from Kerrick soon. He was sharp and had his head on straight, as Gren's parents continually reminded him.

At the end of the day, he received his paycheck for the last two weeks, $150. If he could come up with another $60 in the next few days, he could go get his puppy!

He visited the puppy again, bringing it a little chunk of ham that he snuck in, and played with him for as long as Adelia would let him. He gave her $50 to hold the puppy for another few days.

Kerrick, meanwhile, had just gotten back home from a trip to the next town. His mother needed a few things to fix up his dad's mining gear which the town of Ashford didn't have. He put away his coat, made himself a bite to eat, and sat down in front of the fireplace in one of his armchairs.
"It's so nice to come home after a trip," he said. "I wonder what Gren is up to?" He decided to swing by his friends house after he ate and took a bath. Road travel had left him hungry and a little dingy. Once the meal and food was done, he grabbed his coat once more and headed to Gren's.

"I tried doing the job and got stuck in a swamp. I got saved by children! It was really humiliating! I was thinking maybe we put our heads together, we can do the job. Which doesn't sound complicated... It's finding laundry, but it was the only job for adventuring... and you know how long we've been talking about going on an adventure...

"Anyway, come on in and have a drink. We'll talk it over."

I'm definitely down to help you, but I am unequipped for any kind of adventure. Let me talk to my grandad and see what he wants, grab a few things from the general store, and then we can head out. What say you to getting back together tomorrow morning sometime and we can both pick up a few things at the general store? I owe you, I'm sure, so I'll pay for you." Before it got too late, Kerrick left Gren's house and headed to his grandfather's house near the graveyard. He was very fond of his grandfather, and often would visit him at the graveyard. It never bothered him, as most men in his family were grave diggers of some sort. His father was the only one who chose a different profession of mining. Kerrick had read on the quest board about the labor of love his grandfather posted and wondered if it would be about that. He wouldn't mind the job of gravedigger, but he also kept thinking about the quest board and his friend Gren. Adventuring was exciting, and definitely something he wanted to do while he was still young. And who knows, maybe it would provide money for him to live off of as well. He soon reached the house and knocked on the door.

Grisham sat down in the chair across from Gren and sighed.

"I'm getting up in age lad. I need someone to take over for me here, and the job is a little more involved than cutting the grass in the graveyard and planting new stiffs.

"From time-to-time it takes a little more effort to uh... keep this place quiet. Restless spirits can be quite mischievous.

"It sounds alarming, and to most people it is, because having walking skeletons roaming around isn't something folks want to deal with."

He cocks a bushy eyebrow at Kerrick, looking him in the eye.

"You're a smart lad. You've probably heard the rumors..."

He raises his hand, snaps his fingers and heavy-boned dwarven skeleton walks in through the back door.

NARRATOR: Painted on the bones are small runes that you cannot read. Faint blue lights can be seen glowing in the eyesockets of the skull. The skeleton comes and stands beside Grisham, waiting motionlessly.

GRISHAM: "There's a lot I can teach you Kerrick, but most of it will be things people are not comfortable with. People don't like thinking about death. They don't like dealing with people that take care business in this regard. People will talk about you, just like they talk about me now. It can be a lonely life, that's why your father chose not to take up the family business.

Kerrick looked at his grandfather. Then he looked at the skeleton. Then he looked at his grandfather again. Then he looked at the skeleton again.
"Are you controlling that thing?! That is so cool!" Kerrick stood up and walked to the skeleton, inspecting the time mark's along the bone. "Hell, I would love to learn about this, grandad," he said a little more seriously as he sat back down, "but I'm not sure I want to settle into gravedigging just yet. Like I said, Gren wants to get this puppy and needs my help to get the money. There's money to be made in helping people and Gren and I have always have talked of adventuring. We want to see places and travel and help people along the way. Don't get me wrong, I definitely want to settle down into the job later on, but I want to quench my adventuring thirst, first. I'm sorry if I'm disappointing you, grandpa, but I am interested in learning what you have to teach me, if you want to that is."

"Kind of. Kind of, boy. He's in his summoned state right now. The skeleton is just a convenient vessel for animus. The marks are preservation runes. They make the bones stronger and do not allow degradation. This is a great thing to know."

Grisham pulls out a small pendant and shows it to Kerrick. On it is etched a rune that matches the rune on the forehead of the skeleton. He mutters a word, "finis", and the skeleton falls to dust, disappearing.

"I understand lad. I didn't say you had to take over tomorrow, just understand that I have a lot I can teach you.

"Take some time to think about it. I'm not going to croak for a while yet. Go out in the world. Experience and learn new things.

"We can get together when you have time, I'll teach you a few things, you can go back to adventuring.

"There will be a few places you'll need to go for me anyway, and they'll be challenges unto themselves.

His grandfather obviously had some secrets, and those skills may even prove handy if he needed to protect someone. And it wouldn't be a bad thing to go into the gravedigging business, which he already knew a lot about... though maybe not as much as he thought.

OOC: forgot to post the cost of all Kerrick got, and he will buy what Gren wants as well.

Adventurer kit - $25
First aid kid - $12
Pistol crossbow - $14
Hand axe - $14
Water pump - $25
Water filters - $10
Dehydrated rations - 14 for $21
Gren's sling shot - $6
Puppy food - $10 (?)

And what good are projectile weapons without ammo? I'm going to totally make this up.

Crossbow bolts - 25 for $25
Slingshot pellets - 30 for $15

Total spending: $167, $333 leftover.

Sorry if the ammo costs aren't right, I tried tonmske them more expensive than they seemed, but I could totally be wrong. Feel free to adjust for the future, I guess.

GREN: "See this pouch? I'm going to gather stones as I go for ammo. I'm more worried about the puppy."

Gren proudly displays the little leather bag attached to his belt.

"Let's go talk to Mrs. Marsh and I'll show you where I almost drowned in six feet of muck."

Narrator: Kerrick realizes he can cock the little crossbows easily, however in order to do it, he must put one down and use both hands.

* In use, you can fire each crossbow accurately with each hand. However to cock and load another bolt requires holding each weapon in both hands. Have a clever place to put the crossbow you're not cocking! If you move while you're charging a weapon, the other one will be left on the ground and is unavailable until you use an action (OR MORE!) to go back and get it!

** You can fire both crossbows during the same turn, if and only if you are firing both at the same target (unless otherwise specified).

*** You are responsible for deciding how complicated you want to make this, for example:

- you may roll to hit for the left crossbow, then roll damage for the left crossbow. Then roll to hit for the right, and roll damage for the right.

- OR you may roll to hit for both, and damage for both.

Please talk to me about the particulars on this so I know what you're doing. This could make for badass cinematics, but it has to be clear to both of us exactly what's going on.

Ooc: Kerrick has only one crossbow. He has a habdaxe, with a loop/holster (belt loop) that he slips it into when he is using both hands to load up the crossbow. And with the axe being one handed, he has no need to find a holster for the crossbow. Maybe in the future he might get another one handed melee weapon, but for now the single hand axe will work.

Excellent.

Your Per(ception) stat is a 12. So you want to roll 3d to 12 or under to succed.

Please roll 3d. If you have any tracking or survival advantages or skills, add +1 (meaning that makes your Per 12 + 1 = 13, making it an easier stat to roll UNDER).

Perception roll for finding the trail through the swamp.

I rolled an 11 for you Kerrick, under your Per+1 by two.

You immediately see where you and Gren need to go. The trail winds through thick tufts of grass indicating whoever made it knew right where to step to keep from getting wet, let alone sinking into the mud at the bottom.

Narrator: When you approach the Marsh's back yard, you walk in on this scene:

Mrs. Marsh is scolding one of her little halfling children for either eating dirt or stuffing dirt down their sister's trousers. You can't quite tell which. The accent is real.

The father is hunched over a workbench using a hand plane taking tiny shavings off what looks like a beautifully constructed little door with the classical Z-brace design.

When they see you, everyone falls silent and even the arguments of the children quiet.

"Why Kerrick! Gren! It's so nice to see you!" Mrs. Marsh exclaims as she bustles up to you.

After you explain to her what you found and give her Tishi's bracelet, she looks down at it for a long time and finally nods her head.

"I'll give you $100 if you take me to him tomorrow."

The husband hears this and shoots to his feet walking over to you three.

"Milly! Hold on!"

He walks up to her and whispers in her ear for a solid minute. They walk out of earshot where you can plainly see them heatedly discussing something under their breath.

When that little drama is done, the husband is plainly unhappy with the outcome, but doesn't appear angry, just resigned.

She comes back to you and apologizes.

"I'm sorry about that boys, but what do you say? Escort me to this young stirsi tomorrow and along with the $20 I already owe you, I'll pay you another $100."

Kerrick thinks about Mrs. Marsh's proposal. He COULD take her back, but he knows that Tishi is already planning on coming to see Mrs. Marsh in the future. And besides, he really wants to meet back up with his grandfather. But the extra $100 would be nice...

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Marsh, but I at least have to decline. My grandfather and I have business to attend to, and I know that Tishi is planning on coming to see you in person when his leg heals. However, I only speak for myself. If Gren wants the extra money, he could escort you if he wants. As for me, if you could wait a bit it would save you the money when he is all healed up."

Kerrick looks to his friend, knowing he desperately wants a new puppy...

Gren is foaming at the mouth for that $100, but he knows if he tries escorting Mrs. Marsh to Tishi, and something serious happens, he doesn't have what it takes to protect her.

After he tells her this, she laughs and pats him on the shoulder.

"Don't worry about that son. I can take care of myself, and you. I just need you to show me where he is."

Gren thinks this over and looks to Kerrick.

"I guess I'll take her then. I know you have other stuff to do, this will give me the money I need for... you know, stuff. Sound like a plan?"

Long before you reach the Bogwooly, you spot it, seeing a suspicious looking, lumpy patch of moss.

You know what this creature is, and what kind of danger it represents (See: Bogwooly, under 'Bestiary')

It is right next to your trail about fifteen yards away. Moving directly past it will make it attack, to go around you'll have to get wet and dirty.

You attack hits. Now roll Dmg per your Dmg stat on crossbow.

(Normally at this point the creature you're attacking would make a Dodge roll. This creature is very slow and you're attacking with advantage, meaning the creature gets no dodge roll.)

To roll your damage, roll 1d+2.

We will take that number and subtract the DR (Defense Rating of the Bogwooly) from your damage. Let's call the Bogwooly's DR a 2.

It is only this moment that Gren realizes he has not picked up even one single rock to use as ammo for his slingshot.

He throws himself to his knees and begins to search furiously through the tall grass and reeds in search of anything he can use.

This takes Gren's turn. I'm going to roll against his DX to determine if he finds anything at all, and even if he does it will have to be seeds or the like, which will cause a major penalty to damage.

He rolls an 11, not finding anything.

Off in the tall reeds, only about five yards off the trail stands what looks to you like a little man made out of grass. It's very hard to see even with your excellent roll, but that's only because it blends in so well.

Concentrating harder though, that's exactly what it is. A figure about a foot tall, made out of intricately woven together grasses and other plant material.

Little blue rocks in place of eyes stare back at you. Now that it has seen you looking at it, it moves very slightly with the waving of the grass, trying to blend in further.

It does not work and you are still observing it. What would you like to do?

He waits to see what the grass man will do next.

The little Grass Twist cocks his head, still swaying slightly, but then stops and takes a few little hops forward, just out of reach of Kerrick.

He stays there for a moment, then looking past Kerrick, tosses a hard little seed, nailing Gren right in the middle of the forehead.

After doing this he looks back at Kerrick, and if you didn't know any better, would swear he looked like he was laughing.

He runs past Kerrick onto the trail and moves down it a ways, looking back like he's waiting for you two to follow.

The Grass Twist leads you both (let me know if you want to stop, or do any checks) down the path, and seems to point out certain areas that if you had not saw them, may have led to you stepping into a waterhole or other various difficulties. It's obvious he's trying to help.

At one point he stops, freezes and doesn't move for almost five minutes before finally moving along.

With the Grass Twist's help Kerrick (and by the act of some miracle, Gren) makes it to a dry little clearing where a makeshift treehouse has been built. It sits about seven feet from the ground in a mangrove-like tree, and it takes a minute for you to realize what you're looking at. It's someone or something's home.

A little fire pit, racks for stretching hides, hand made clay bowls hold water, rude decorations hang from branches. There is a very tribal feel to the whole scene.

"I Tishi. Stirsi. On walkabout."

He nimbly makes his way down out of the tree and amazingly enough you see that one of his legs is done up in a makeshift cast. Somehow he's broken his leg. (Please refer to the Stilsi race in 'Playable Races List', his portrait doesn't look anything like he does.)

The little guy has a Mohawk that is dyed orange, one piercing in both ears and is wearing a hodge-podge of different furs, bangles, necklaces and bracelets made out of teeth, claws, bits of clam shells and other unidentifiable bits.

He makes an odd noise with his mouth and the little Grass Twist appears, climbs up Tishi and stands on his outstretched hand.

Tishi holds his other hand up to the Grass Twist and it bows, making the blue eye stones fall into his hand. With that he carefully folds up the little Grass man and puts him in his belt pouch with the blue stones.

He looks at Gren and grins.

"Leg hurt. Had to... use Hurstibimmelik (you're unsure of this word but you are fairly certain it's his native tongue, referring to the Grass Twist). Old juju. Tribe juju."

He smiles at Kerrick, looking first from your crossbow to your axe.

"I took things I needed. Hurstibimmelik couldn't get. No have choice."

After Kerrick and Gren make their plans, Gren heads home to clean up, stopping by to see the puppy on his way down Bogs Corner.

He seems to be even more excited since the last time. A little blur of soft fur, clumsy legs and eager tongue, Gren has to absolutely drag himself away to head to town.

He cleans himself up and does his laundry, determined if nothing else, to stay clean the next day. Nervous about going solo back to Tishi's camp, he has a hard time getting to sleep, but after a cup of tea and a shot of whiskey, finally does.

OOC: I'm going to try something for myself with concern to adventuring solo with Gren.

Seeing how I'm the GM, there won't be a lot of surprises in store for me if I keep doing what I'm doing now (making shit up as I go) so I'm going to try implementing some kind of randomizing encounter system. Nothing too extreme, but I do want to fight a few things to and from my destination.

So I have one "swamp enemy" already, the Bogwooly. I'll come up with a few more, let's call it two more. Then assign them numbers between 3-18. If I had three creatures all together, that gives me a spread of 6 chances, 5 chances and 5 chances of rolling any given creature.

Thusly:

3- BW
4- GL
5- SP
6- BW
7- GL
8- SP
9- BW
10- GL
11- SP
12- BW
13- GL
14- SP
15- BW
16- GL
17- SP
18- BW

BW = BogWooly
GL = Giant Leech
SP = SPider

This is just an experiment to see how all this goes and to make it a little less...

Me: you fight a Bogwooly
Me: ok, I roll to hit: 12
Me: you hit, roll damage
Me: ok, rolling damage, I did 2 damage
Me: nice, your character is mad strong
Me: shut your face
Me: another Bogwooly comes

Etc etc

Watching Kerrick calmly take down the Bogwooly and then gain the trust of the funky furball had been impressive.

In order to be of any help to him in any adventures, he would have to get stronger. He'd been a wastrel most of his life, but no more.

She sat in her back yard running a whetstone along the edge of an interesting looking short-bladed weapon.

Scaled to a halfling frame, the blade resembled a wide bowie knife, with a short and very fine chain attached to the pommel. At the end of the three foot chain was a heavy steel ball the size of a walnut.

Along with this unorthodox weapon, she is wearing an interesting mix of leather and chitin-plated armor.

Later that night he finally collapsed of exhaustion. The stars swirled overhead and voices from the past came and called at him from the shadows in the swamp.

He finally fell into a feverish sleep that left him cold and clammy in the wan morning sun.

Tishi stoked the fire and sat shivering until the cold was driven from his bones and cried. It wasn't his fault he was born this way. All the old tales were just that, old tales... weren't they?

After a miserable breakfast he groomed the debris out of his hair and tested his leg. It was sore, but usable.

He thought about his two visitors from the day before as he did so. It was taboo for the stilsi to involve themselves with other races, but he'd been born a taboo, hadn't he?

"Oh well. They seem to be good people and not the evil monsters I was always taught. I will see with open eyes."

When he was done stretching, he decided his leg felt good enough to hunt, and so he did.

Later he relaxed by his fire with a Bogwooly tail and wild potatoes grilling beside it, sending out a mouth watering aroma. He felt better than he had in days.

Unfolding his Grass Twist he began the song of animus. He would do a little exploring today while his food cooked.

He knows now where the two are headed and grins. He would see if he could arrange a little surprise for Dumdum.

Old Play from PBW

Kerrick and Grisham
on Fri 2 Feb 2018 @ 2:40 AM (PBW Time)    [edit]   [delete]
Take up the story here when you're ready Kerrick.

Kerrick arrives at his grandfather's house not long after leaving the Marsh residence. "Hello," he calls out to his grandfather, in case he is outside at the graveyard. "Grandfather, are you here?"

"Laddie!" Booms from behind the house after you call out.

"I'm out back, boy!"

The town graveyard is directly in back of the old dwarf's cottage.

Back there you find him "planting a stiff" as he lovingly puts it. While he is respectful of the dead, he knows all too well that we all get a turn, why be so serious about the whole matter?

There is a neatly dug hole and body wrapped in a linen sheet lying next to it.

Kerrick walks around to the back of the house. He spies his grandfather and greets him with a firm handshake and a hug. "Good to see you again, Grandfather. I've just gotten back from helping Mrs. Marsh with Gren, and while we were at it, I've gotten to think more about what you asked. I've decided I would like you to teach me about the business."

"I knew you would laddie! I knew you would. But like I say," he gets out his flask and takes a healthy pull, "ye didna have to hurry back. I may be an old bone handler, but I have a few years left in me. But, I'm glad to hear it, and if you're sure, I've got a little job for us, you can get some first hand experience and see what it's really all about." He winks at Kerrick and offers the flask.

"If I'm not mistaken, there'll be something worthwhile in it for ye too. Whaddya say?"

Kerrick thinks about it one last time... already knowing his answer. "Yes, Grandfather, I am ready to learn what I can about being a bone handler. Now is as good of a time as any, I say.

"Oh, there is just one thing though." Kerrick sets down his belongings and rifles through his bag. He pulls out the Bogwooly tail. "I know Ma has a good recipe, but I figured we could make something with this for dinner here. Want me to start on this and you get whatever you need to get to teach me?"

Grisham literally falls to the ground in a fit of pure hilarity.

"Oh... Oh laddie! I always knew you were a good kid, but seriously?!" He coughs a little and takes a swig from his flask.

"Your innocence is beautiful. Look, us in the trade are known as Conjurers, not bone handlers, that was a little tongue-in-cheek. We bring animus from the Empty Plane and shape it to control our constructs. It's an unhappy fact that bones are the easiest to control."

"Anyway, that's a few lessons down the road. Yes, get that Bogwooly cooking, it sounds fucking fantastic!"

He heaves himself off the ground and dusts off, still chuckling.

"I have everything I need to get this party started, but a good meal before we leave is never a bad idea."

OOC: Kerrick - If you have any cooking skills, or you want to role play though what you are making with the Bogwooly tail, we can make individual rolls for the meal you are putting together, which will then be tallied up and a buff given for your next story.

Give me some ideas.

Other players reading this: give me your input on how we can make things like cooking skills, or other skills not normally used to make the game more interesting.

Roll 3, 6 sided di(c)e 1 times. Add 0 to the result. Drop the lowest 0 di(c)e.
 1 + 4 + 5 = 10
Total = 10

on Mon 5 Feb 2018 @ 4:30 PM (PBW Time)    [edit]   [delete]
Kerrick makes his way to his grandfather's kitchen where he begins preparing Bogwooly tail chowder and biscuits. A thick, creamy soup of tail pieces, bacon, and potatoes that go well with hearty biscuits to help scoop it up easier than with a single spoon. Soon the kitchen begins to smell like his mother's and he knows he has made the recipe correctly.

OOC: I'm guessing cooking could be seen as a survivalist trait, so I'm going to roll for that. All of my survivalist skills are based off of Perception-1, making my goal to be under a 14, which I succeeded with my roll of 10. Woo!

We are going to let this one go, due to a good and logical argument, but the actual skill used in cooking... is the skill called cooking.

However, this is what we'll do:

Add a temporary 2 FP to your characters' sheet and a +1 to your attack success rolls for the next 8 hours (in-game time, in other words your excursion with Grisham).

Also add 1 CP to your character sheet for explaining what you are cooking and how you'd eat it. Nicely done.

Grisham sits in the living room and ties more fetishes onto his staff. The little trinkets appear to be of no particular pattern or material.

He pauses from time to time to inhale deeply, enjoying the savory smell coming from the kitchen and take a nip from his flask.

"Sweet Gods that smells good, boy!"

You both enjoy the hearty meal, which turns out exactly like you wanted it.

Grisham unrolls a map on the table while you're eating and points to the dotted path leading off into the woods just east of town.

"This is where we are heading. There's an old, old set of stairs here, leading down into a crypt. My great-grandfather left me this map and told me one day, there might be call to go down there.

"Well there's been stirrings in the ether, and the secret to keeping the masses calm is quietly taking care of the problems, before they become problems, you follow me Laddie?"

OOC: Refer to the 'Maps' thread to see where you're going if it will help your immersion. If you're ready to go:

You both walk out of town, through the steady rain, in the direction of Bogs Corner, but veer right off the road. A path no wider than a game trail meanders to a rather spooky sight.

Cut into the ground is a perfectly rectangular opening with even stairs heading down into the darkness.

Kerrick: When you're ready, take it from here.

Right now it's about 7:00pm, rainy and balmy.

Kerrick, you'll be heading out in the weather and the dark for this excursion.

Kerrick eyes the dark, damp staircase with some trepidation. "Hmmm, gonna need some light," he says while he removes his adventuring sac and rumages through it. "No light here, but I do have a flint and tinder. Wouldn't stay lit very long, but if you have something we could light, I've got the flame."

OOC:

Correction: you have the Night Vision Advantage.

Your eyes adapt to darkness quickly. Each level of this ability (max of 9 levels) allows you to ignore -1 in combat or vision penalties due to darkness providing there is at least some light.

So... you don't have a light of any kind and it's raining which will make firebuilding and torch making difficult.

Since I failed to include any light making devices of any kind in the General Store, you Kerrick, and all new starting characters will be given a free light stick.

This light stick requires no flames, or fuel. It is a variant of a gem engine, but instead of creating power, it has been constructed to create heat and light, but very little of both.

As it stands now, you must hold it in one hand, but there is a built-in loop where a lanyard could be secured.

Kerrick's House, PBW

Kerrick has a small house, made of stone and wood. A deep red door opens into a long hall with a staircase running up against the right side.

To the left the main room. A fireplace roars against the side wall, shedding light throughout the room. A large navy couch sits aside the front wall, facing a small coffee table atop a green woven rug. Two brown armchairs sit aside each other on the other side of the coffee table, but not against the wall. This is because a large bookshelf lines the back wall of the room, except for a door against the inner wall. This leads to a small washroom.

To the right in the hall is a combination dining room and kitchen. Nothing special, just the necessities for the kitchen at the back and a sturdy table for eating towards the front. There is also a door leading outside against the side of the room.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, one larger than the other, and a large washroom. The washroom has a large soaker tub with a linen closet, toilet, and sink. The master bedroom has a large bed, chest at the foot of the bed, and a wardrobe. The second bedroom is less furnished, presumably for visitors, or his friend Gren, when he has had too much to drink. One last room upstairs is a study with a desk and even more bookshelves. Maps of graveyard plots litter the desk.

All in all a comfy spot, perfect for a bachelor.
