Gren

Gren heads grabs something that resembles food from the kitchen table, and munching contentedly, ambles out the door and heads to his day job: the bookstore.
When he arrives he is greeted with the same singsong phrase he's heard every day for two years.
"Helloooooo Greeeeeeeeeeeen..."
"Good morning Ms. Tilwatter."
The owner and proprietor is a pleasant woman with thick horn rimmed glasses that is so short she could almost be mistaken for a halfling.
Absent minded but sweet, she has been a good friend of Gren's for a long time.
"Where do you want me to start?"

Gren spent his day shelving books and chatting amicably with Tilwatter. He kept pondering his money problems, and what he could have done differently on his first "adventuring" job, other than sink in the muck and walk home smelling of shat.
He hoped he'd hear from Kerrick soon. He was sharp and had his head on straight, as Gren's parents continually reminded him.
At the end of the day, he received his paycheck for the last two weeks, $150. If he could come up with another $60 in the next few days, he could go get his puppy!
He visited the puppy again, bringing it a little chunk of ham that he snuck in, and played with him for as long as Adelia would let him. He gave her $50 to hold the puppy for another few days.

Kerrick, meanwhile, had just gotten back home from a trip to the next town. His mother needed a few things to fix up his dad's mining gear which the town of Ashford didn't have. He put away his coat, made himself a bite to eat, and sat down in front of the fireplace in one of his armchairs.
"It's so nice to come home after a trip," he said. "I wonder what Gren is up to?" He decided to swing by his friends house after he ate and took a bath. Road travel had left him hungry and a little dingy. Once the meal and food was done, he grabbed his coat once more and headed to Gren's.

Gren walked back home and saw Kerrick walking down the street in the same direction.
"Kerrick! Hey Kerrick!"
He ran to catch up to his friend.
"Hey man. How you been? Your grandad's looking for you. I'm getting a puppy! Where've you been? Wanna help with a job?"
Gren has a huge smile on his face as he bombards his friend with questions.

Kerrick smiles as he reaches his friend, laughing to himself at all the questions he is asking. He didn't mind helping his friend, and was curious about the canine.
"I went to pick up some things for mom in the next town, which took a few days. I got grandad's letter and planned on finding him after I found you. What's this about a job and a dog? Tell me the details and I'll gladly help you out."

"Well here's the thing. The dog and the job are actually unrelated. Well sort of. I need to do the job to get money for the puppy.
"I tried doing the job and got stuck in a swamp. I got saved by children! It was really humiliating! I was thinking maybe we put our heads together, we can do the job. Which doesn't sound complicated... It's finding laundry, but it was the only job for adventuring... and you know how long we've been talking about going on an adventure...
"Anyway, come on in and have a drink. We'll talk it over."
Gren opens his door for his friend and waves him inside.

"Oh Gren, I'm sorry I wasn't there to help," says Kerrick as he follows his friend inside. "Was that the one posted on the board on the front of the post office? I'm definitely down to help you, but I am unequipped for any kind of adventure. Let me talk to my grandad and see what he wants, grab a few things from the general store, and then we can head out. What say you to getting back together tomorrow morning sometime and we can both pick up a few things at the general store? I owe you, I'm sure, so I'll pay for you." Kerrick sits down and accepts the drink his friend gives him, thankfully. Kerrick has a slight addiction to drink and typically carries a flask on him, but he forgot to fill it up when he was at home earlier.

"That sounds like a great idea! Thank you Kerrick... I really want this puppy, wait till you see him! He's so cute!"
Gren and Kerrick have a few more drinks and chat about this and that for a while.
They agree to meet at the store in the morning and make plans from there.
Gren goes to sleep, thinking about his runty little puppy.

Before it got too late, Kerrick left Gren's house and headed to his grandfather's house near the graveyard. He was very fond of his grandfather, and often would visit him at the graveyard. It never bothered him, as most men in his family were grave diggers of some sort. His father was the only one who chose a different profession of mining. Kerrick had read on the quest board about the labor of love his grandfather posted and wondered if it would be about that. He wouldn't mind the job of gravedigger, but he also kept thinking about the quest board and his friend Gren. Adventuring was exciting, and definitely something he wanted to do while he was still young. And who knows, maybe it would provide money for him to live off of as well. He soon reached the house and knocked on the door.

A sturdy old dwarf with long white hair and a beard answers the door.
"Lad! Good to see you boy. Come in."
He turns and walks back inside to put the teapot on.
He turns back to Kerrick and produces his flask to waggle in front of him.
"Care for a wee nip? It's the new batch, nearly killed Gren I reckon. You've checked on the boy, right?" He says, then chuckles through his mustache.

Kerrick chuckles and says, "I just came from there actually. He's fine, probably sleeping. He has his heart set on getting a dog, and I've promised to help him earn the money." Kerrick takes a swig from the flask and slightly shudders. "Nice blend, grandpa, I can really taste the juniper. Now, what did you want to talk about?" Kerrick takes a seat on his grandfather's couch.

Grisham sat down in the chair across from Gren and sighed.
"I'm getting up in age lad. I need someone to take over for me here, and the job is a little more involved than cutting the grass in the graveyard and planting new stiffs.
"From time-to-time it takes a little more effort to uh... keep this place quiet. Restless spirits can be quite mischievous.
"It sounds alarming, and to most people it is, because having walking skeletons roaming around isn't something folks want to deal with."
He cocks a bushy eyebrow at Kerrick, looking him in the eye.
"You're a smart lad. You've probably heard the rumors..."
He raises his hand, snaps his fingers and heavy-boned dwarven skeleton walks in through the back door.
NARRATOR: Painted on the bones are small runes that you cannot read. Faint blue lights can be seen glowing in the eyesockets of the skull. The skeleton comes and stands beside Grisham, waiting motionlessly.
GRISHAM: "There's a lot I can teach you Kerrick, but most of it will be things people are not comfortable with. People don't like thinking about death. They don't like dealing with people that take care business in this regard. People will talk about you, just like they talk about me now. It can be a lonely life, that's why your father chose not to take up the family business.
"Think over what I'm saying carefully."

Kerrick looked at his grandfather. Then he looked at the skeleton. Then he looked at his grandfather again. Then he looked at the skeleton again.
"Are you controlling that thing?! That is so cool!" Kerrick stood up and walked to the skeleton, inspecting the time mark's along the bone. "Hell, I would love to learn about this, grandad," he said a little more seriously as he sat back down, "but I'm not sure I want to settle into gravedigging just yet. Like I said, Gren wants to get this puppy and needs my help to get the money. There's money to be made in helping people and Gren and I have always have talked of adventuring. We want to see places and travel and help people along the way. Don't get me wrong, I definitely want to settle down into the job later on, but I want to quench my adventuring thirst, first. I'm sorry if I'm disappointing you, grandpa, but I am interested in learning what you have to teach me, if you want to that is."

"Kind of. Kind of, boy. He's in his summoned state right now. The skeleton is just a convenient vessel for animus. The marks are preservation runes. They make the bones stronger and do not allow degradation. This is a great thing to know."
Grisham pulls out a small pendant and shows it to Kerrick. On it is etched a rune that matches the rune on the forehead of the skeleton. He mutters a word, "finis", and the skeleton falls to dust, disappearing.
"I understand lad. I didn't say you had to take over tomorrow, just understand that I have a lot I can teach you.
"Take some time to think about it. I'm not going to croak for a while yet. Go out in the world. Experience and learn new things.
"We can get together when you have time, I'll teach you a few things, you can go back to adventuring.
"There will be a few places you'll need to go for me anyway, and they'll be challenges unto themselves.
"You've never disappointed me boy, and you're not now. You're a good lad.
"Have some tea."

Kerrick sat with his grandfather and drank his tea for a while, talking about nothing in particular. Grisham was right, he should take some time to think on the offer. His grandfather obviously had some secrets, and those skills may even prove handy if he needed to protect someone. And it wouldn't be a bad thing to go into the gravedigging business, which he already knew a lot about... though maybe not as much as he thought.
After a while, Kerrick said goodbye and made his way to his house. He filled up his flask and promptly headed to bed.

Gren walked up, jumps out of bed and washes his face and hands. After getting dressed he walks out to the kitchen, and has a shot of honey-whiskey while he makes coffee.
He checks that he has everything in his backpack and heads to the general store.

Kerrick wakes up the next day, takes a quick bath, grabs a bite to eat and his trusty, full flask, and heads to the general store. After all the odd jobs he does over the years, he was able to save up around $500 after he bought his house and furnishings. And alcohol.
Kerrick meets Gren at the store and takes a look at the wares. He decides to buy a starter adventuring kit, a first aid kit, a pistol crossbow and a hand axe.

Gren looks around for a little while, buys himself a slingshot and some puppy food.
He looks at Kerrick and says:
"That's all I need for now."
Gren puts the food in his pack and keeps his slingshot in his hand. He can't wait to get back outside and start playing with it.
