Yeah, the Codpiece is a fine establishment. No one has died from their food...  yet.

The other player is in the middle of her solo play as of right now. I'm still chipping away at this and that.

What do you need as far as getting into play?

You get a basic kit when you make your character including light leather armor, DR:2, a low quality weapon of your choosing, a small backpack with a simple First Aid Kit and a light stick.

You have an additional  $1000 to spend on top of that.

For map making, there's this:

it's very cool! and can make full continent maps or tactical HEX maps.

This is better for full world maps though:

Take whatever is listed with a grain of salt. A lot of times all I want to do is get "placeholders" for things, and then go back and edit stuff here and there as the mood strikes.

I want to have something for players to use that know even less about the system than I do. So yes, ST -> SW -> Whatever the actual table says.

I'm flexible. Explain to me what Ritual Path and Realm magic is, or direct me to the reference material, and we'll go from there.

I'm just figuring out the standard system now, so if there are other systems my players want to use, understand that it will take some time for me to learn.

Magics

References are in:

GURPS Magic: Thaumatology
GURPS Ritual Path Magic
GURPS: Monster Hunters 1 - Champions.

Realm Magic is also in Thaumatology.

They're basically  syntactic magical styles that allow for more flexibility than 1 skill per spell.

In games I've run I delineate 'types' ofmagic by using different systems.

For example, if you compare to DnD.

Wizard (academic learning of magery) uses the standard magic system
Sorceror (exerting willpower to manipulate reality) uses Realm Magic

Ritual path magic is used by a form of caster that is more akin to something you might see out of ANime/Manga - and is based on use of one's core essence/spirit/or whatever to create effects.

Each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Access to Google Drive Folder

If I could have one of my players go to the Notice thread "GURPS Lite Download" to test the link and report back to me that things are working correctly, I would appreciate it.

As of the timestamp on this post there should be two PDFs, the GURPS Basics, Characters, and Campaigns in a public Google Drive folder.

I will be adding every GURPS book I've purchased so far and I ask everyone, kindly, once, not to be assholes and just use the references in the spirit that I've intended. If we were all sitting around a table, I would have these books sitting around for anyone to thumb through and use.

Keep that in mind.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I hope you have a great day and are out spending time with the people you love.

As a "gift" to my players, add 20 CP and $500 to your character sheets, available for use immediately.

Have fun!

Arlend: I'm almost done with the map of the new city I'm setting up for you to start in. In a few days, you should be set to go. In the meantime, the name of the city is Raito. As with my other players, you begin with a small dwelling of your own consisting of a main room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, all furnished and ready to go.

Start out in your solo thread telling us how you would like that to look.

You can also fill in the gaps with stuff like the names of your "posse" and a little about them.

Normal places exist in Raito as there would be in any other city...  stables, inns, blacksmith shop, gem engineers guild, explorers guild, ship docks, airship docks, trading posts...  etc, etc. Don't let the lack of a map stop you from jumping in and getting stuff done.

I do have a question about the situation. I appreciate that this might be for Arlend to figure out but it's always worth asking as there may be some implicit knowlege that I, the player, do no tknow.

Assuming that Arlend drops a few people off into jail, what's stopping the slavers from just going to go get him out, beating up the local forces and making him be released?

Some ideas might be that "while they're okay kind working 'around' the authorities, any direct conflict with them might result in some terrible results that would deter it?

Maybe Arlend would have to stop that also.

Actually I had conventional powder-charged cartridge firearms in mind, but firearms using gems would be extremely interesting...

Let's say gemguns don't exist yet, but maybe an enterprising individual could convince an extremely talented gem craftsman (which are hard to find because the art is still in it's infancy) and an extremely talented gunsmith to work together to make such a thing...? I'll leave it at that.

Moving some threads

In the interest of making things in our game a little more compact, and finding things to outfit your characters easier, I will be moving the following threads into the 'General Store' thread:

Vehicles
Mounts
Animal Companions
Weapons
Armor

Since everyone has access (that I know of) to the Google Drive folder containing the books, I'm not going to bother posting stats for every single weapon or piece of armor and the like. If there is equipment you want, look it up in the books and shoot me a quick message so I can see if it fits in the world. Most equipment can be found starting on page 264 of GURPS Characters.

I tried to play it well. Even a vaguely stupid fighter might think twice about taking on 4 sailors in an unarmed brawl. So, play to his strengths!

No worries, i understand. Occasionally i'm impatient.

But appreciated! I try to play characters in realistic ways, even if dramatic or whatever and not just black and white ways of getting through problems.

It was his first gambit, sow some fear and discord amongst them. Put fear into them about stealin g kids.

Then play to their fears, maybe sabotage some things, cause 'sickness' in their crew until they're caking themselves. Then let all the crew see their captain and mate die and see what they think of that.

I'm glad everyone is okay! I've been lucky enough not to be in any accidents yet...  *knuckles head*   knock on wood.

I want everyone to understand that I will never badger anyone about posting in this game. These things have a tendency to fizzle out on their own if they aren't going anywhere. While I hope this game doesn't, I'm okay accepting the reality if it does. If a few months go by, and I don't get posts from a player... well, odds are, I'll wait a few more months, and your character will just be there in limbo. Long-story-short, yeah, I'll wonder where you are, but I won't ever be upset if you stop posting.

Just do me one solid: if the game sucks and that's why you're leaving, let me know. I don't want to prolong anyone else's suffering because I have this grand picture of my game being fucking spectacular, you know what I mean?

On a different note... if this game does become something my players all enjoy and we get to telling some awesome stories, do I have provisional permission to make small corrections in everyone's writing?

I was sent into this world with the unfortunate birth-defect of being a god damn grammar nazi...  I really like to write. When things are a bit cocked-up, it honestly drives me up the fucking wall.

I am by no means willing to completely rewrite anyone's work, but if I could tweak things here and there when I see them, it would help my psychosis grow into new and more disturbing heights.

Having said that, anyone that points out a mistake in my writing, will get 3 CP for each instance. That could add up...  or could it..?    >:)

Weigh in. Let me know how you feel about it. Shit, you never know... this may be a book someday. Don't make me proofread every god damned post from every god damned thread...

(Note the note below suckahs!)

It was gonna go pretty harsh - hence why he sent away the young'ns. But ultimately the only reason it didn't happen is because "charitable" he let the blade go down with the man so he didn't bleed out before getting some treatment from the guards.

It's kinda silly for the ghost of the land to ask one of the children for a knife...

Going strong too! Haha, these CPs are coming thick and fast, I should probably start spending them soon. I'm saving up for now - because I kinda like that I have to think laterally to get over some problems. Jumping into a crowd of hardened sailors (something something mum joke) is more of a frightening experience when you're not a weaponmaster with 25 in skill, and wielding a legendary sword of cutting, infused with the spirit of the god of war.

I mean.... Obviously being a weapon master with level 25 skill wielding magical artefacts is also very awesome, just in a different way.

But it's nice to have so many options available - and I like seeing how stories pan out to see where the points will go. More IQ? More social stuff, more gun-toting madness?!

Comes down to fun

I'm glad to hear you're having fun, that is in fact why we play. I am not personally a big fan of being pigeon-holed into specific roles either, which is why I try not to subject my players to that. That and it makes me have to think around problems too.

Instances of Teaching-the-GM

Everyone should already be aware of me being a very inexperienced GM by now.

A recent post in one of my players posts has reminded me of how much I am counting on you guys to teach me the mechanics of GURPS.

In each instance that I request information from my players on specifics of their characters attributes, advantages, disadvantages, skills, etc, I feel you guys should be rewarded.

I don't know why this hasn't occurred to me yet, but I do owe you. Discuss it with us here, or with me in private messages, for retroactive CPs that you should already have.

What I would like to be decided here publicly is how many CPs to award per 'Teaching-the-GM'.

2?

4?

Depends?

Give me some feedback...

I've used blender for years :D
it's 'so' fantastic.

So, regarding the reward of CPs. I think the biggest thing we get out of it, is getting everyone excited and interested in the game and mechanics which, in turn, keeps the games alive. Games going dead is a common problem, and sometimes you drop into a story that a GM is running or are bound by some things that mean you can't realise your character to its full potential, whether progression is too slow or it wont fit in the setting. The freedom we have is pretty awesome.

I'm really easy on the points - but i've read most of the books page to page, so can probably rack up a monkey-ton of points in almost every post.

GURPS is as granular or abstract as you want it to be. But it's fun, and this game is fun. So just award em as you see fit.

Jaloo- this bipedal race of humanoids stand head and shoulders above humans, most commonly having a burly build. Their overwhelming strength of limb is outdone only by their uncommon wisdom and knack for woodscraft.

Covered in long shaggy fur unless trimmed, these people are comfortable in even the most frigid climates. Adorning their head are swept back antlers made of a semi-flexible cuticle. Tribal pride dictates they mold the antlers into specific shapes.

Strong and agile for their size, they enjoy wrestling above all other sport.

Spoils of War

Here's my take on how I want this to work. I'm sure there will be unforeseen problems at some point... possibly... But I'm going with it.

The laws of the land aren't all steeped in the legal bullshit that we are plagued with in these days. Word-benders and money-fuckers take a backseat to common-sense and reason in my world.

Example Number One:

- You kill an asshole. All of said asshole's belongings have to go somewhere, right? Well, the person that did this public service has first rights to this, with a small caveat of giving a small 'donation' to the local police force. You're bribing the police...

They would take the property and auction it off at some point anyway... like they do now. Only in this scenario, we are cutting out the middle man. The person that puts their life on the line basically gets dibs.

Example Number Two:

- You kill a well-liked and decent member of society. All of said person's belongings have to go somewhere. Well, the person that whacked this decent individual has first rights to the property, with a small caveat that the police are going to know you're full of shit, and the friends/family of this decent person will be gunning for you. Shit will sort itself out.

It's a very black and white way to do things, but I'm not a complicated man. Maybe with the help of my players, we can come up with a more in-depth and 'realistic' way of running this, but for now... an asshole is an asshole, and a decent person is gonna have people coming for you.

As always...

Gimme some feedback!

P.S.  Gunslinger thing? No fuckin' idea. I'll learn as we go...    hahaha!

Other Business

I'm not sure if I have mentioned it before, but this game actually started out as my wife and I playing GURPS.

She has been playing for 2+ years as Kerrick, but not on RPOL. I am not sure about the all the RPOL policies, or whatever. And I don't care. It's a very simple google search of 'play by post rpgs', and there will be one near the top that has the initials PBW.

I'm telling you this because I don't want anyone to thing she is getting any special treatment over the rest of my players. She's been playing a long time and still has worse stats than you other two.

You're welcome to search around and decide for yourself. On top of that, there is a thread somewhere that has the backlog inside it from RPOL.

Also, I play Gren. He's Kerrick's sidekick. He has had 50 CP and a runt puppy to his name. Anything my other players gain, he gets 1/10 of the lowest gainer. And I will keep him rigidly within those limits. If he dies, he dies.

The next order of business is making your solo threads available for everyone to read.

I want to do this for the information in each players solo to be available to the players. I feel this will foster the discussion between my players as to the state of the world and what is going on.

This doesn't fall under Character information, but Player information. This may answer some questions to other players that want to read backlogs before they get too huge that it just gets overwhelming. But I trust to my players they will not meta-game.

So I would like everyone to weight in. Can I move your Solo Thread so everyone else can read it, or not?

Do not get me wrong, if you do not wish you solo thread to be public, just say so, and only the players that want to share threads will be able to do so.

Thank you,

Firearms

Have any of us sat down and had a heart-to-heart about firearms yet?

Arlend: I know you have some pistols. What I don't remember is what we discussed about calibers. I am of the opinion that at my level of GMing (over 9000...) having a shit-ton of different calibers will just be added complexity.

My proposal is that when you find "ammo", it can be used with any "firearm". There's just one universal ammo...

If everyone is okay with that, the next thing we have to decide is what the damage of these firearms are going to be.

If you direct your attention to page 278 in the Characters book, there are forty-ish different calibers and configurations for firearms.

So...  damage? Weight in.

I am willing (for now) to drop firearms into three broad categories:

- pistols
- rifles
- shotguns

(gem guns we will get into later)

Here's my suggestion:

pistols: (Revolver) 2d-1 pi
rifles: (Lever-Action Carbine) 5d pi
shotguns: (Pump Shotgun) 1d+1 pi

If you feel these numbers will affect your gameplay, or even if it doesn't, please weigh in so I can get this tacked down and get everyone on the same page.

Danke-danke!

I think just pull the stats out of high tech for the cowboy-era stuff. I'd say that modifiers might exist for different races/tech.

like heavy pistol +1/+2 damage for Dwarven made ones because they use some other kind of thing.

Or wahtever.

The high ech stuff should just fit pretty nicely.

always good to have long term goals though.

Also, are geodes and other gem stuff in any way aligned to specific things? Like do some have similar but distinct properties? For example, a Gem powering some kind of fire-based engine/process might have a stronger affinity for that type of thing, whereas a geode that helps cool things down could be better.

I.e. do they get bonuses for particular things?

I figure that this might also be a way they couple with magic (since leylines are also mentioned).

Gems

The gems do not have any particular affinities. They are simply a small, compact source of energy. How they are applied determines the effect they will have on the environment.

A gem engine is simply an electric engine that runs off a gem by harvesting the movement of electrons created by an artificial sink in a circuit.

As of right now, electrical energy has been the only way of harvesting energy from a gem by non-magical means. To create heat from a gem, one must only harvest the current and run it through resistors.

Personally I know Kerrick is nice and secure with his beginning storyline, and this new guy would have a LOT of catching up to you. Maybe you could speed him through a little, but he wouldnt have as much detail in his background story. If I were a player wanting to jump in at this point, I would maybe have my background story line up close to where we are? But then he wouldnt get the feel of the game...

If you feel up to having another player, that is your decision. But don't forget the game had stalled for a decent month.

I guess that puts it pretty damn high.

I like that the solo thing allows us to really explore things we want to do, i like the generous giving of CPs (that allows us to evolve into what we want to be) (2 years for a campaign that gives 10cps is a pain in the ass).

The rate isn't 'super' fast, but it's not really slow either. A faster rate would put the game rank higher, but i'm not complaining.

I've got most of the DF books, but not the new kind of 'box set' they brought out recently.

I think there's just more value in buying the DF series of books rather than the box set proper, as they changed some things to make it a little more 'easy entry'.

However, I dont know precsiely what they did change, and from all accounts it seems pretty awesome. (I just like having complexity to play about with)

I know a few of you have backstories you're thinking about, but maybe some haven't considered it... I don't know.

Goshi

go-SHI:

Racial Background-

The tiwatu are a strange race of beings that travel the world without bounds or care for other races. The times of tiwatu births are synchronized with litters of goshi. The tiwatu young and goshi kits are raised together culminating in a very deep bond where one or the other picks a rider or mount. It's not clear which.

Goshi are not available as mounts to any other race than tiwatu. If by chance a goshi is found on its own, it should not be approached for any reason by any race that is not tiwatu. This means death for you or it.

Description-

Goshi are long, bipedal, flightless birds with short, wide feathers allowing them to move in the weird area between terrestrial and aerial movement. Every feature, from their long thin skulls to their razor sharp talons exude movement capability.

Rumor has it both races were designed by the Sky People as a perfect union between mind and body. This has yet to be substantiated.

What a trysn is to a goshi, an elephant is to a sparrow.

Don't try.

Well,

I'd just make it as a monster,

Get  a dinosaur template, apply the 'machine' template (from one of the books).
I'd just build it based on a dragon or dinosaur or something, give it DR and injury tolerance applicable to metal.

It would be pretty similar, apart from harder since steam would probalby mean it 'does' have vitals, like water pumps and valves etc.

I think the main difference it'd have is probably just some form of 'terror' effect and damage reduction.

The alternative is to build it as a vehicle, which I think a lot of people do for things like Gundam  mechs, etc.

There are probably some 'meta traits' that could apply to a robot too that might not be in effect for normal animals.

Like 'indomitable' because it doesnt feel fear or anything.

Interest Check

First, thank you for the info on the magical robot skeleton, I appreciate it. When she decides what to name it, I'll make a character sheet and post it somewhere so everyone can see.

Then, maybe another one for WindRunner and WidowMaker? Would that make things easier for us, or do you want to add a section in your character sheets?

The actual 'Interest Check':

Anyone want another set of threads to write your story down?

I'll start one for Gren later to give everyone a better idea of what I'm talking about.

I know you, Arlend, have a Journal... and if this is what you were thinking to use that for or if that is just a place to write down ideas and work on character development, I'll leave it alone. Well, I'll leave it alone either way, but if you want another one for this kind of thing, I'll make you one.

It would be cool if this story turned into something cool and we could peddle it somehow to make some side cash? Dunno...  just a thought.

I'll be honest with you right now, I wasn't expecting as many cool things to happen in this game as already have. You never know...  I don't know how much you guys read but the self-published drivel that is hitting the Amazon market right now is borderline vomit-inducing.

Once in a while you find some gems, don't get me wrong, but it's mostly crap.

Let me know.

I got the journal, that's there to just explore ideas - Once i have a kind of 'progression' of Arlend's character , i'll be filling that in a little bit more, and being able to write those reflective posts in it - or relate it back to the main story.

quote:

I wouldn't or won't do anything like this - it's  your baby, you should cash out from it it if anyone. I 'think' in places like Roll20 there are games that require a 'subscription' of sorts to play, but usually i think that's just to just justify the minimum standard and effort that GM has to go into. Not sure though as i've never joined any o fthose games.

A lot of it is shit tbh, agreed. But actually if you were going to write something up, and drop it in amazon markets I think it could make some cash, maybe not make you a billionaire like Rowling, from a 'hobby' - but with time and directed development maybe that's something you're into? Small wins are still wins.

A live session does sound fun... but I got thinking the other day... I have a while to think about what I'm going to say to my players when we play-by-post. In a live session, I have no idea how well I'd do having to come up with answers right on the spot.

But fuck it... if we can swing it, we'll try it sometime. I'm not going to get any better unless I practice, right?

New real-time rendering engine. New features for the grease pencil that makes it more like a painting program. Sculpting is better.

The interface is fuckin CLEAN.

REgarding realworld animals. I think the ST value of a lot of the animals is 'way way off'.

For example

a Gorilla's strength is said to be 14. Absolutely not true IRL - but it's hard to really govern when you just up and down every single animal.

In reality a gorilla is probably strong and tough enough that a human has 0 chance of fighting it. Even the strongest men on the planet have basically 0 chance.

However, I think it's mostly worth while putting the numbes down as a 'guide' and then kind of hand-wave stuff that isn't directly afflicting to the character (i.e. damage) that an animal can do?

I always tell my wife, if I wasn't such a fuck-up and coward as a young man, I would have been in the military.

I get off hearing about the real-life examples too. A 90 lb woman lifting a car off her grand-daughter. People from different countries suddenly speaking the same language when trapped on a mountainside during a life-threatening storm. Strange things that happen to the most mundane of individuals in times of extreme stress. It's fascinating.

I fully believe there are vast landscapes of untapped potential in the human that we only get to see tiny glimpses of.

But that's just my $0.02.

I worked with the army (technically in the army) when i was younger and realised that my "romantic wish to be a military trained individual" was all just bullshit tbh.

It's nice to be able to say it, it's nice to say "I've been tested and tempered in fire" should you have seen combat but ultimately. I really really cannot stand being told what to do.

PLus, we're all cowards, some just hide it better, I think.

Your other points are all great, at heart i'm a technical person (I work in cybersecurity) and have been hard into science for a long time too. I love that stuff too, but i also like knowing how it can happen and manifest.

Just a personal example. I used to live in Croatia - and prior to living there (and dating my gal) I'd never experienced the language before (except for the fact that there are some commonalities between Croatian/Slacic and Russian, which i do speak pretty badly). While my gal and her parents/friends were talking, I could follow most of the conversation just by picking up on a few words here and there. I knew some verbs, and some nouns and a couple of conjugations and from that I could at least 'follow' what was being said to some degree - even if i didn't have the nuance.

It made me realise that the idea that "alot of the conversation" is through non-dialogue stuff, gestures, context, etc.

I could believe the mountainside thing.

So,

one of the problems I always had as a GM was 'how to make the journey interesting without just 'throwing fights at people'.

Like, walking through nature, and seeing mountains anfd valleys and forests, or sailing ships on the sea reeally does evoke feelings that seem to rarely even be done justice in RPGS. I love the idea of ARlend having his own ship, and own crew, and just doing those 'smaller things' to make life great and fun and interesting. It doesn't always have to be fighting and smashing and Powering up, etc.

But it's a struggle for me (when i've GM'd) to capture that. How do you guys manage, or do it?

Well, to be honest, I haven't done any journeys with you guys yet, but just so happens...

Two of you are starting on one, and probably the third will be soon.

So thanks for the extra pressure, buddy...

XD

I guess I'm just going to give it a go, then we can discuss it as it's going on, at the end and see what worked and what didn't for you guys.

I have a few ideas, and I've done some research.

As a visual person, I would really prefer a nice map (hurry the fuck up mr. mapmaker...) to track where you're at and where you want to go.

Until I have some workable maps...  we'll wing it.

Aye I think.maps are a good solution to it.

I even think little rolls for things here and there. Maybe a line breaks and can cut to that a bit ( may be works better in real time )

I appreciate that Arlend. I've missed playing but I've been busy as hell with a few of my own projects. Not that that's an excuse to keep you guys in the dark for a month, but it is what it is.

Things are calmer now and I'm ready to get back at it. Quite honestly I'm amazed anyone is still watching the game. We may have lost the other two, and I'm not sure what my wife's plans are with WoW 8.3 patch and Shadowlands coming up, but if even one person is still wanting to play I won't trash the game.

What I'm after is everyone can read everyone else's solo threads, but can't post in them...

Long story short, if something is screwed up with your Player Groups, you're welcome.

Let me know and I'll fix it...

Everyone should have access to any Threads in Group 0.
Kerrick is 1, 2, A, B.
Arlend is 3, 4, C, D
Alfonzo is 5, 6, E, F
Seeungher is 7, 8, G, H

Which reminds me... Seeungher. Everyone else has agreed that they would allow other players to read their solo threads. Are you okay with that or would you prefer to have yours set to Private?

Well here's the thing...

I don't want to stifle your creative juices, however...

If you post with three things I need to address, and I only get to one of them, we run the risk of me forgetting about the other two things. Between my memory sucking, and you going off again with your flowery prose (heh, I'm kidding, I dig it), those other points may be left behind.

I also have to split my time between four of you now and I don't want anyone feeling like they are getting short-changed. More than they already have been by my frequent and prolonged absences...

So... maybe?

Either that or you'll have to wait a bit longer for me to respond...

Just a Heads Up

A few of you may have noticed a comment from me that goes a little something like this:

PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS POST UNTIL THIS MESSAGE IS GONE. I AM NOT DONE YET!

I jump from platform to platform playing this game (when I'm playing this game...). I'll go from my phone, to my computer at work, to my Kindle, to my computer at home... It's easier for me just to put up a half-done post and then subsequently come back to work on it as time allows.

If, however, I post an incomplete response, then someone answers back quickly (lookin' at you Arlend) then sometimes information, questions, answers, etc get lost in the shuffle and do not get addressed.

That's all that is about in case anyone is curious.

Interested in Opinions and Ideas...  Cursed!

Well, I'm sure everyone here is now aware that another poor soul has been duped into playing this game with us.

This exceptionally unfortunate individual has elected to take the Cursed Disadvantage.

As I read the rules and regs, this basically gives me carte blanche to make his character's life hell.

With the exception of a bit of toilet humor (my favorite kind of humor) nothing truly serious has been done.

Okay, so I guess here's the question:

What would you guys do with this situation?

It seems that having this Disadvantage carries some serious feedback... let me know your opinions if you have any.

I have an idea instead of physically doing things to this character, he could have mental problems instead..?

I don't know...

And it's interesting that in order to get rid of the Curse, not only do you have to come up with the points, but physically (or somehow) hunt down the reason for your Curse and defeat, fix, kill, purify, it.

Could make for an interesting story.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is it worth having an 'aspect' to the cursedness? Like giving it a flavour allows it to manifest all in a similar way rather than randomly?

Cursed could be something like "always wrong place at wrong time"

That is a good thought.

I feel to get the most out of the Disadvantage, is should actually relate to something in the characters story.

I've asked the player to enlighten me on what he is expecting out of it and will obviously take that into account... but will also attempt to give it enough of my own flavor for events to still be surprising for him.

It's kind of a tough one. And a Disadvantage I didn't picture any player taking, but now that I've thought about it a little I can imagine some interesting options.

I always played it the opposite to luck...the dam gets to reroll any successful dice roll once per day. Exposed to a disease? Double check that resistance...fail either, and you are crook as a dog! Crucial reaction roll? Same again. This will result in a very unlucky history. Perhaps it is a genetic thing, or a spirit the family, or person, pissed off. Maybe their good is not popular here. I would let the player come up with the reason, and then you come up with the way to make it right, if even possible!

I'll keep posting pictures until everyone is happy with their models...  after that, for those that want I can print them out a copy and mail it if you would like to provide me a temporary P.O. box... or something. I'm not sure how that works, but there must be a way.

The software is extremely easy.

I don't know much about resin printing yet, but there are many free, open slicers for FDM printers.

Resin = uses lasers and liquid
FDM = lays down molten plastic layer by layer

You design or download an STL file, load it into the slicer, that converts it into G-code. Save that to a n SD card or some other portable storage. Stuff it into the printer and hit the go button...  all that is the easy part.

If you want to look around at models you can download, go here:

www.thingiverse.com

The slicer I use most often (free and open-source) is Cura.

At this point it's a matter of tinkering.

There are a lot of different variables that will go into getting a nice print.

Layer heights. Speeds. Temperatures. Materials.

It's fun as hell.

I could go on and on, but I don't want to bore anyone too badly.

If you have more questions, ask away...  I love it.

Almost any CAD software these days have options to export as a 3d model.

These programs will differ in complexity greatly.

A very simple and intuitive one to use is SketchUp.

A few hours of playing around with Sketchup, and you'll be well on your way to modeling fairly complex shapes. Also there is a metric ass-ton of tutorials on YouTube. Also, after some sign-up bullshit, it can be used in a browser.

The next step up in complexity is AutoDesk Fusion 360. The learning curve on this one is probably about 10 hours to start modeling interesting stuff. This will be used mostly for engineering-type designs. The way it's set up and works lends itself well to component style drawing. Last I knew... it was also free after some sign-up bullshit.

And then theres Blender... ah Blender. Sweet, sweet Blender. Blender has all the ease of use of your typical all-analog cross-starsystem generation ship. It's got gadgets. Gizmos. Doohickeys and thing-a-mabobs. Need a whatchamacallit? Under tons of menus and windows... if it exists...  Blender's got it. You can 3d model. You can rig for animation. You can animate. You can paint. You can draw. You can animate in 2d and then set a dubstep bagpipe soundtrack behind it. Learning curve you ask? Approximately 40,000 years. Best part: Blender is free, and it always will be... godamn I love Blender...

Rolls and Stuff...

I may have addressed this before, but I'm lazy, and I don't feel like reading back through the OOC Chat to find out.

I will make a note of it somewhere I can access quickly this time...

What is everyone's preference when it comes to rolls?

We have a situation where a Body Language and Detect Lies roll was in order. I wasn't sure whether I should do the rolls in this instance, or let the player.

A few excellent points were brought to my attention (thanks Alfonzo) about the situation. I don't want to roll when a player doesn't want to use those skills in any particular situation, but I also don't want the reverse... having you sit there being like "Where's my info bitch?" if you're thinking it should be something that's automatically done.

So I guess what I'm asking from you guys is to be precise on when you want rolls, and if you want me to do them, or you.

Like Alfonzo stated, metagaming becomes the issue if the players do some of the rolls. If you don't feel you're a victim of metagaming, feel free to do the rolls yourself. Have me do them in secret if you are... etc etc.

Tell me your thoughts and preferences.

Thank you!

Rolls and Stuff...

I think in a lot of cases you can just make judgement calls.

Like perception rolls and stuff can be rolled by you, or you can ask people to roll for u etc.
Usually, I think in situations that make the game flow better it's just better for people to make a judgement call on it.

For example, if character is walking down the  street and thee's an ambush, rather than just "OOC: make a perception roll" you can just make one on their behalf. Similarly, if a character tries to shoot somebody, they can make Tohit/damage rolls just in case they're needed etc - just to keep flow going.

Like things such as detect lies, could be rolled in secret by the GM without the player knowing and then the result affects. It's better to say do it that way for 'everybody the GM chooses' because he knows when. The detect lies skill would arguably just be something the charcter does with people, so it's one of those situations where you're like "deect rolls on every conversation"

But, you know me. I will make my own version of a dragon if you guys really want a few derping around.

Re: 2000 Posts...

Yea, I really do like 'grit'. Being one of those ginslingery mageball weidling monsters is all fun for the 'cinematic effect'. But being in a brawl there the fight ebbs and sways, and people on both sides get injured, and it's a real gritty fight... they're so much fun. Plus there's definitely something to be said for 10 people kicking the hell out of 3 people. It's brutal, and savage, but ultimately kinda realistic.

I think it's one of the reasons I 'really' love Close combat (and hand to hand combat mostly) in GURPS, because there's a more visceral connection to someone punching you in the face for 2hp of damage, and you having to describe ur jaw being cracked, or eyesocket broken.

More than "the elf swords master, turns and spins on the spot causing glints of steel to appear before everybody falls into 17 pieces in an explosion of blood". While it's cool and fun it's not.

"7 young people take turns stamping somenone's face into a bloody and very muddy mess".

Hey everyone.

Again, I dropped the ball. We've had some IRL difficulties this summer, and unlike most of the rest of the world, we've been busier than ever with our jobs.

If anyone is interested, I am going to once again, attempt to pick up the scraps and plod along.

I do not blame anyone if you are no longer playing or have dropped the game. I can't imagine how annoying this is for you.

If there is no interest, I have no problem letting the game fizzle out or handing the keys over to someone else.

I'll just post this here.  If anyone is interested - i wouldn't want to take anyone away from other games, so only if people have time and a desire to help a budding GM out.

I've got a few nice ideas planned, and hopefully will open it up to be more strategic like the game we had before Alfonso - only this time i'll ease in more gently and not overwhelm myself.

Hi folks,

A couple of thoughts I'l like to put out there:

I've found that in pretty much all GURPS games I've played, ignoring one-shots, the disadvantages see more usage than advvantages. Is that a general thing? Or just me?

I've never played GURPS where firearms (and gunpowder) are used. So, at TL4, doees this make armour mostly irrelevant?

Thanks!

Racial Templates

Now that most everyone has well established characters, I figured now would be the perfect time to work on the Racial Templates.

I always get confused...

Say I'm working on the Base Attributes, and we start out with a ST of 10. I want to make a halfling, so I'm going to knock that down to 7.

Does it look like:

ST: 7 [-30]

or does it look like:

ST: 7 [30]

???

Are we adding the points you're 'gaining' by lowering ST to the pool of points you have to work with, or is it subtracting the points from the stat you're working on...

???

I have to standardize it so I don't look through all the templates and wonder what in the hell I've done and why everything is cocked up.

I want to say it's ST: 7 [-30], but I honestly don't know.

I figured you guys would know what the real answer is. Thank you!

__________

EDIT:

Never mind... I get it.

It sucks that you're in lockdown.

My wife and I, along with my side of the family have been very lucky throughout this thing.

We live rurally, so no one is telling us shit about any kind of lockdown. She's a nurse and I work in aerospace, so we've been classified as 'essential workers' as well.

Really our life hasn't changed all that much and we feel bad for those it's impacted. I can't wait until this is all over.

Game Progress...

Hey guys, I just wanted to stop in and say there is some more info in the "All About Gems" thread. Check that out if you're interested. I have some concern about what I may have told people and how I imagine things working now.

If you have questions, concerns or are otherwise as confused as I am on a daily basis, drop me a line and we'll figure it out.

In other news, I am trying out some new mapping software called Dungeon Fog. Seems a pretty robust tool from what I've seen so far. So maps may be getting an update to where it makes more sense to everyone. Hopefully.

I still haven't found that one end-all tool that will allow me a one-stop-shop for everything from a world map to laying out dungeons, but it is what it is.

The next minutes in this one man meeting is in regards to where our game is going. I don't really have a leg to stand on because of my exemplary attendance record, but I'd still like to ask...

Is everyone not entertained?!

Where do you guys see yourselves going and am I giving you the right paths to get there? What am I fucking up and what am I doing right?

Are there things I'm missing that is bothering you?

Weigh in and give me some feedback as to how I can make things better if you're not happy with what you have.

Thanks!

Read the new section on gems. TY.

I don't know about Dungeon Fog; it will be interesting to see the results. I've always used the ancient Dungeonographer & related SW.

I'll send you a PM on my game thread.

Maps and Stuff...

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing good.

I wanted to touch base with you guys on everything and make sure everyone is content.

I've been playing with the new mapping software and I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I need a better way to 'hook' the maps together, like a numbering system. Seeungher, your latest map has that on it, so hopefully that will make sense.

And hallways... It's kind of hard for me to represent hallways, maybe I just haven't found the sweet spot yet, but hopefully I can improve on that as well. For right now it appears like there's a wall at any entrance/exit from the room being mapped, even if there shouldn't be. I'm not sure what to do about that yet... the way Dungeon Fog works is you have to have an entire outline of the room you are mapping, then it paints in the wall and floor for you. But in order to do that you have to have a closed shape, hence the walls where there really aren't any... if that makes any sense.

Lets see... what else...

Movement through an area.

The more precise you are with telling me what you want to do, the less liberties I have to take with your characters.

Anytime I am moving your character through an area because I get a statement like "I look at the next room." you are free to be like "Yeah, I didn't go that far... I'm still back here." is perfectly fine. It's hard to coordinate that stuff during play-by-post. I think that's why I get so antsy about the maps. Giving you guys a modicum of spatial awareness is important to me.

Anyway, any ideas on how I can improve that, or anything else, lemme have 'em.

Thanks!

Yeah I was hoping to be able to at least do combat in a more interactive way. And even if we don't use it here, I want to learn it because my wife runs a Quest game for a small group of our friends who haven't played TTRPGs, and she wants to make maps as well.

Supposedly there is a way to have your tokens, the enemy tokens, Fog of War, spell effects, etc etc. and I think it would be a lot of fun. I'm a map/mini junkie... so even if it doesn't work for us, it is still something I want to get running properly.

Heh heh... fire...

Okay guys, I need a little guidance here...

How much damage does normal fire do?

Like if you were to ignite a pile of cloth... not a living thing, just items.

1d6-1?

So I went to GURPS Campaigns, to pg. 433. There is a little table that lists Flammability Levels. So lets say the fungus is 'Flammable'.

Flammable (e.g., dry wood, kindling, oil): 3 points.

Also listed in the same box as the Flammability Table is the line:

quote:
Once a material starts burning, it may ignite adjacent materials.
Make separate rolls for it based on the fire’s damage (1d-1 per second
for an ordinary fire).

This look about right?

I don't know how this is usually done, so say you have a damage roll at 1d-1, and roll a 1. That resulting damage is not zero, correct?

It is still 1 point of damage?

A roll of 2 would still be 1 point of damage. Roll of 3 would be 2 points, and so on?

Labor Day Weekend

In reply to GM (msg # 575):

Here's what someone who's been playing and GMing GURPS for 35 or so years said:

Question:
If already successfully cast, is it correct that a fire from Create Fire will magically burn for 1 minute and will then need Maintenance Cost (1FP) per minute thereafter?

Yes.  It requires no fuel source (other than Mana), but it is "normal" fire (I know, that's missing from the spell text) in that it isn't counted as "magical" for things that require 'magic' for special effects.  Like many things in GURPS, some stuff is left for interpretation or "having prior knowledge of the system".

quote:
What damage does the spell do? Is it 1d6-1 burn per second?

It does burn damage, 1d-3 for being partially in the flames, or 1d-1 for being fully in the fire.

To make it "hotter/more damaging" see the spell Fast Fire in GURPS Magic (though I don;t know Gwythaint has allowed that spell).

I
Although if cast inside a contained area an let burn long enough, it wold count as 'contained' and likely do more damage (the radiated heat from the walls of the container).  See your local GM for specifics.

AS per DFRPG Exploits pg 68
Ordinary Fire: A bonfire, Create Fire spell, patch of blazing alchemist’s fire, or other hazard described simply as “a fire.”
It inflicts 1d-3 burning damage per turn spent partly in the flames (dashing through some hexes that are on fire, some that aren’t), or 1d-1 per turn spent entirely in fire. This is large area injury (p. 53).

Question:
Can SHape Fire be cast on a fire (made from Create Fire)so as to be able to move it?

Explicitly yes, as per Shape Fire, DFRPG Spells pg 31.

Map Symbolism...

I've had another kink in the works.

This time concerning maps. Oh wait...  concerning maps again.

I have a limited amount of features I can add with the newest map software I'm pretending to use these days.

If a feature on your map gives you any concern, please ask me to clarify.

The problem goes thusly:

An icon I used as a gnarly-looking-alien-nest-from-your-nightmares, has a cluster of three circles representing the location of such a gnarly-etc-etc. Not the quantity of said gnarly things.

There are three 'eggs' in this map icon. There is only one actual problem to deal with in that area, not three.

I really, really hope that makes sense to everyone without adding inadvertent spoilers, or being to obtuse as to make things just... stupid.

Hey guys!

Hell, what a few weeks...

I was laid up sick last week in the middle of trying to get my CDL classes done.

A few points of housekeeping:

One of our players would like to start out with a new character. Does anyone else feel they got a little too powerful too quickly?

Or have any other points of interest they could share so I can do a better job as our GM?

Along those lines, there will (at some point) be a wiki for this game/world using World Anvil. Give that a Google if you've not heard of it. It's basically a worldbuilding tool that helps degenerates like myself keep track of all their shit.

As per normal operating procedure, I have no fucking clue how to do all this shit yet, so here is a link to the World Anvil wiki for any brave souls that want to try it out and report back what they see:

http://www.worldanvil.com/hero...ess/Ubwh-kGhc-X7ApKT

Let's start there and see what happens...

Let's have a chat.

Hi everyone, Mr. MIA here.

I hope everyone is doing well. I have been fine, I'm sorry for worrying any of you. I hope you have been doing great - happy and healthy.

I'm not sure what to do here.

I'm at a crossroads. I don't want to keep ghosting you guys and then coming back at my convenience. But I am also in love with this world that we've made and I selfishly want to keep it under my purview.

I'm not sure why I am the way I am, I just am. Will this happen again. Yeah, probably will.

Do I have too many hobbies and too few horsepower upstairs? Yeah, definitely. But that's still really no excuse.

I'm busy. So what? So is everyone.

So I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone have a good solution? Would someone be willing to take over the game if I keep doing this?

Like I've said a thousand times:

I'm sorry for the delay.

In reply to GM (msg # 637):

Personally I have a few games and am happy to keep going the way we are. But may have times I am called away as well. That is just me though.

We couldn't copy your style and that's a very special thing. When you're ready to play again I'll be here.

Thanks for saying hello again! Glad you're ok!

Shock

Found in B419

quote:
SHOCK
Whenever you suffer injury, reduce your DX and IQ by the number of HP you lost – to a maximum penalty of -4, regardless of your injuries – on your next turn only. This effect, called “shock,” is temporary; your attributes return to normal on the turn after that.

This is what you were asking about in my thread?

Maps and Stuff, V.1.0.01.020.0100.001.0.01

So I've found my mapping software for our world and regional maps... apparently it's Inkarnate. What a great program.

So I dumped an early version of the world map in the 'Maps' thread. I'll be going through and adding more detail to that as time allows.

Also, my wife and I are in the process of buying a new house, and we are going to remodel some of our existing house so we can rent that out. There will be projects and my post rate will be variable... but I am going to do my best to not ghost.

Thank you all again for your patience with me.

I think the games tanked which is a shame of course but more importantly I hope the GM is ok.
