1.  For this game, the GM will handle all rolls (NPC and PC) for the sake of expediency.  Posting will be 2-3 times a week, but I favor quality over quantity with a few longer, more thought out posts than having tons of one-liners.

2.  I'm looking for 4-5 PCs with a variety of backgrounds.  Because I'm handling all the technical aspects, I'm looking for players who are more interested in the story and drama.

3.  Before getting into crunchy bits, write a little pitch about what kind of character you want.  Just a few lines to summarize what might make him unique.  You may wish to look at the list of Advantages and Disadvantages to get an idea.  If you have an idea for your own Advantage/Disadvantage, I'm open to discussion.

4.  In-game, the PCs will all be from Bastogne.  This works for plot and helps give them some cohesion.  That being said, they character's don't always have to get along or agree about everything.  For a modern analogy, the characters are coworkers - knights under Duke Thierry of Bastogne - but don't have to be personal friends.

5.  Knights can focus in a variety of areas: being an amazing warrior, a military leader, a religious leader, a land-owning economic powerhouse, a political leader, a romantic or even a scholar.  Most knights fit more than one.  I would like a variety of characters.

6.  In the interest of full disclosure, I have a deck of index cards with treasures on them that I draw from for rewards.  Some of these are simply money (1d2£, 1d3£ or 1d4£), some are leftover items from the additional belongings table or various valuables, some are items to give benefits to skills, and some are side-quest items.

As for house rules, each character must choose one Advantage and one Disadvantage:

Advantages:
  • Optimates - Even among nobles, your family is famed. Your family is part of the House of Ardennes and you are a cousin of Duke Thierry.  And as the House of Ardennes is an offshoot of the House of Arnulfings (i.e. the royal House of the Carolingians), it is possible to trace your relation to King Pepin and Prince Charlemagne.
    Game Effects – Gain 1,000 Glory. Gain a +5 bonus to social rolls when interacting with other nobles.
  • Castellan - Instead of a simple manor, you inherited a minor castle. In addition to its enhanced defensive capability, it is easier to raise armies. However, in times of war it may be a target as well.
    Game Effects – You own a small motte and bailey style castle with DV of 5/3. When paying the upkeep for troops, you get 1£ for free each year due to already having housing.
  • Iron Ore - Your manor estate includes a small iron mine. In addition to providing additional income, it may be a strategic resource or provide for future economic opportunities.
    Game Effects – You gain an additional 2£ income each year the mine is in operation. This will likely generate events during the Winter Phase.
  • Paragon of Virtue - Where others may struggle living up to the tenets of religion, your character excels. Devotion and obedience come naturally, and you often put moral choices before practical ones.
    Game Effects – Gain +2 to each of your Religious Traits and +2 to Piety.
  • Scholar - While many nobles can read, you exult in it. Though many consider reading for pleasure a waste of time, it has made you very knowledgeable about most any topic.
    Game Effects – You gain a +5 to any knowledge-based skill check. You also inherit several books.
  • Master of Arms - The ebb and flow of combat comes naturally to you, and you are most comfortable with a weapon in your hand. Your enemies tremble at the sight of you, and your allies spirits rise.
    Game Effects – You gain an additional 10 points to distribute between Combat skills, though you may not increase any skill above 15 in this way.
  • Silver Tongued - You are naturally a gifted speaker, able to skillfully enthrall your listeners. Your melodious voice may lead some to think you are using some kind of beguiling magic, but most people simply enjoy listening to you.
    Game Effect – Gain +5 on Orate, Singing, Flirting and Intrigue skill rolls.
  • Gifted Physique - Barrel-chested, big-boned and muscular all describe you. To most people, you appear as almost gigantic in proportion.
    Game Effect – Gain +2 to Strength and Size
  • Warband - You have a group of warriors personally loyal to you. It may be a raiding party, a small standing army, or a personal warband. Like other permanent armies, this will slowly reinforce and replace losses (assuming they aren't totally wiped out).
    Game Effect – You have a personal army of 25 KV.  (Note: this KV may be subject to change for balance issues)



Disadvantages:

  • Mercenary Knight - Though you are descended from noblemen, your family does not own any land. The French term “bas chavalier” means “household knight”, meaning a knight who depends on someone else for income. It may be possible to set up a permanent arrangement with a lord, but many view mercenary knights as lower than landed knights.
    Game Effects – You have no manor or land at the start. This means you have no income and must make your way with only the clothes on your back and your starting equipment.
  • Illiterate - While the majority of peasants cannot read, most noblemen at least have a working knowledge of letters and words. No matter how hard you try, these symbols elude you. This can lead to frustration or downright depression.
    Game Effects – Your Reading skill is permanently 0. Gain the Passion “Hate: Writing 10”
  • Bastard - You were conceived out of wedlock. While your father still had enough influence to keep you in the knightly class, you are constantly looked upon with derision by other nobles.
    Game Effects – You get a -5 penalty to any social check involving noblemen.
  • Evil Eye - For some reason, bad luck seems to follow you. Perhaps you are cursed, or merely are the gods' plaything. Some people may avoid you.
    Game Effects – Once per session, the GM may make you reroll a roll. Also, you suffer general bad luck.
  • Infirm - Your character suffers some kind of permanent, untreatable ailment. His health continually declines over the years at a much faster rate than most characters and his life expectancy is greatly reduced.
    Game Effects – During the Winter Phase, you begin making aging rolls at age 25 instead of 30.
  • Lowborn - Although now you are the lord of a fief, it wasn't always that way. You were born as a commoner, but through hard work, luck and opportunism, you have risen through the ranks and now are counted among the landed nobility – if only on the lowest step.
    Game Effects – You get -5 to the following skills: Falconry, Heraldry, Read, Stewardship, Tourney.  You get +5 to the following skills: Folklore, Bows.
  • Cardinal Sin - Your character may be devout and by-and-large an adherent to his religion.  But when it comes to a certain sin, he simply cannot help himself.  The character may or may not be aware of this flaw, and may or may not be self-conscious about it.
    Game Effects - Choose one religion trait, lower it by 5.


These advantages and disadvantages are not exclusive.  If you have another idea, feel free to pitch it to me!

Edit:  The players start as squires in 768 AD.  Advantages and disadvantages that refer to a manor won't take place until they are knighted (pretty soon!)

Sample Knight C – An all-around knight, he is a nobleman's noble.  He has a good variety of skills and good relations with others, particularly other nobles, both above and below his station.  He does have a well-defined sense of Justice, developed mostly through observing courtly proceedings.  He is an expert at Recognizing other nobles based simply on a description, and has taken a great interest in the new art of Heraldry.  He spends more time in the court than on the battlegrounds, and although he has some experience with many different weapons, he does not excel at any of them.

Sample Knight D – Although still a noble, he was raised in a relatively impoverished circumstance.  As a result, he is very physically tough.  Being accustomed to an almost subsistence living, he is very Generous in helping others.  Because of his self-reliance, he has a very strong sense of personal Honor.  He also is very loyal to his Family.  He is a gifted horseman, and when given the opportunity, he is a surprisingly good falconer.  In battle he is an expert with either sword or club.
